Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker Almost Starred Link

Nintendo director Shinya Hiratake has revealed that Link from The Legend of Zelda was going to be the star of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Before Captain Toad made his debut in Super Mario 3D World, Hiratake wanted to create a game consisting of diorama-like levels where jumping wasn’t allowed. Since characters in the Mario universe are typically known for their jumping skills, a small team of designers developed a tech demo in which Link was the main protagonist and presented it to the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto.

“We must have done too good of a job with our demo,” said Hiratake, “because during our presentation, Mr. Miyamoto asked us how we were planning on bringing these dioramas into production. He thought we were pitching him an actual physical product design.”

“We like to think that Mr. Miyamoto finally realized the vision we had for a diorama those many years ago.”

    1. Honestly in my eyes, Captain Toad is really just the REAL Toad, the one that’s been around since the original games and was in the cartoons. So according to my logic, he was introduced in the 80s, and they just gave him Captain status to separate him from all the generic Toads and Toadettes.

      1. As much as I don’t like Waluigi, its become that I LIKE not liking him lol. And there’s no way there are gonna kill him off. But it’s always fun to see him get no respect in Smash due to Sakurai’s trolling

          1. yea he is lol I’ve always been against him, I don’t know why I’ve softened up to him…I’ll say bowser jr actually tops him though in pointlessness. I hate him with a passion. how dare they try and replace Koopa Kids with that generic mini bowser clone. Sooo glad they brought the Kids back and put them in Kart and Smash as alts (you’ll NEVER see me as regular bowser jr if you play me lol).

            1. Oh Bowser Jr.? I fucking HATE him. First replacing the 7 Koopalings as Bowser’s only child who looks like Baby Bowser in the present but his character is absolutely barren. Nobody fucking cares about Jr. Why do you think Nintendo decided to bring back the Koopalings and make them more noticable after 18 years since Super Mario World?

              1. yup lol his only use ever out of him is the fact that his alts are the Koopa Kids. and honestly they could have probably used their wands as an attack if he wasn’t the main costume. Or Lemmy’s Balls could have been used. I still love using them though, wish their forward smash had more range, but it’s pretty powerful so I like it. Do you happen to know if their forward smash is an instant shield break? I ask since in the Trailer video for them it shows bowser jr do the drill smash to mario’s shield and break it, but I haven’t tried it out myself.

                1. Haha I’ve been using Lemmy a lot myself. I will try to rotate between them all on the U version, but Lemmy has been on my default. Ordered a shirt with the bunch, pretty sweet except it also has jr. on it lol.

  1. I am so glad this is a Captain Toad game and not a Link one. I guess as a Zelda spinoff it wouldn’t be well received “Fanboys ranting about not being a real Zelda game – lol” besides I like the bright colours from the Mario series.

I just hope that we get Puyo Puyo tetris localized by sega, it would be awesome as W le are really lacking puzzle games “not counting indies, they are good thou”.

    1. Especially since Sega kinda played a bomb with Sonic Boom, which Sonic may need to rest a bit while they focus on bringing other Sega characters front and center. Too bad, I had hopes for this sonic

    1. If you are referencing Captain Toad, it’s not a party game, it’s a 1-2 player puzzle game. I’d much rather have that than wii fit or wii sports or wii party. I take it you didn’t enjoy the levels they had in Mario 3D World?

      1. I said 1st party games or first party games.
And no. Wasn’t a fan of them in 3d world. It was a relief breaker though after playing some hard levels in 3d world buuuuuuuttttttttt just found it pointless all together.

        1. true, are you not into puzzle games period or just not this type? I wouldn’t call myself a huge puzzle gamer either lol but this one seems fun to me. Not like Mario Kart or Smash fun, but chill relaxing fun that hopefully will be challenging for me puzzle-wise.

            1. True, as I said it’s not usually what I go for but they essentially gave me a demo with the 3D world levels and got me lol.

  2. If this was meant to be Zelda game they should have used Tingle! It makes a lot more sense since he’s a treasure guy. This was a missed opportunity for Tingle to have his own game. btw guys I was the one who sent this info to mynintendonews! It’s just alba is huge ass and he didn’t even credit me… Now you know why I like silvershadowfly more…

        1. yea definitely would make more sense lol. I’ve honestly lessened my tingle hate since originally playing wind waker. I swear I remember him being far more annoying in the game, but after I played the HD remake I didn’t mind him so much.

          1. Same. It’s the fact they cut back the need of that monopoly running motherfucker in Wind Waker HD that we’re not as annoyed by him. lol But he still pisses me off when I look back at the original game every now & then.

              1. No problem. Originally, we had to go back & forth between translating Triforce charts & gathering rupees. And we had to do this with all 8 Triforce pieces. I swear I spent more time gathering rupees than doing the actual fucking Triforce quest! I hate fetch quests like that. If there was more to do between each chart, it wouldn’t have been so bad in the original game.

  4. I’m glad they went with using Captain Toad for this instead of Link. If it did go with Link, I would have gladly gotten the game since I love the idea of using Link in different gameplay styles from the usual Zelda fare. Exactly why I love Hyrule Warriors, despite it’s flaws with Legend/Free Mode. Next up, I want to play Link in a crossover game similar to God of War… minus the blood, gore, & nudity. I want to play a truly badass Link that’s obliterating enemies with the ability to manually make him jump & do attacks other than sword attacks. Sure I can do that stuff with Link in Super Smash Bros but it’s just not the same thing as what I really want to do.
