Eidos-Montréal, the award-winning Square Enix studio behind Deus Ex: Human Revolution and THIEF, today announces the ‘Dawn Engine’, their new, state of the art game engine that will be the cornerstone to the development of the Deus Ex Universe projects at the studio.

The Dawn Engine, based on a heavily modified version of IO Interactive’s Glacier 2 engine, features new technology that allows for improved rendering capabilities, real-time physics, and advanced artificial intelligence programming, among other things. An official screenshot from the Dawn Engine can be found above.

“The technology behind any game is a key component in ensuring that gamers are able to develop both an emotional and visceral connection to what they are experiencing within the game world,” said David Anfossi, Studio Head at Eidos-Montréal. “We’ve worked tirelessly over the last few years developing this engine, building upon and improving both the visual and immersive artistry in our games. We truly believe that our engine will help us to strengthen both the gameplay and storytelling experiences we strive to create.”

    1. You’re joking, right?

Of course this won’t be on Wii U.

I love the Wii U but I don’t think it’s strong enough to have those graphics. Hell, I think the XBox One and PS4 would have a problem running these graphics

        1. This Engine will run on PS4 and Xbox One, not that underpowered Wiik U. PS4 supports Unreal Engine 4, Phanta Rei and many more next gen engines. The Wii U is last gen

  1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

I sincerely want this engine and a new Deus Ex from you Eidos, I loved Deus Ex Human Revolution…

        1. False…? What games has square enix put to the wii u and what games EA and activision put to the wii u and compare idiots.

          1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Unlike them, the Squares put out Deus Ex which was a game that was worth the resources and minor glitches if any unlike the other 2 gimped, delayed and glitched garbage…

  2. why post it. there is no way this will be on WiiU. Seriously. If it could be, where are all those UE4-looking games on Wiiu? They are not, because it is too weak to run them. People will keep on believing this console will make a jump just like they kept believing with the Wii back in 2006-2009.

      1. I like how optimization is the new buzz word for secret sauce on platforms that are simply not capable of supporting the engine by presentable means.

        1. I like how these new engines are so godlike, even more powerful than IBM’s supercomputer Watson, whose DNA is part of Wii U. Of course, that’s a different element I s’pose & dependant on how much of that DNA was included. Too bad games couldn’t work well in past gens, or work well on a true console between PS360 & PSX4-1.

But I especially like how, ” technology behind any game is a key component in ensuring that gamers are able to develop both an emotional and visceral connection to what they are experiencing within the game world,” sounds so much like the emotion engine Nintendo used in Wind Waker on GameCube. & wow, Eternal Darkness exhibited character interactions rather well, & the details in Samus’s visor… Or how the Wiimote & Gamepad can offer a tangible connection to the digital world…

But I guess it takes 2 gens before raw specs can make that leap to engage the gamer on an “emotional and visceral” level. Too bad photorealism is the only style that can evoke such a response.

I like how graphics have now become that “secret sauce” to making gameplay so special it’s becoming a thing of the past.

    1. Cool story dick head now you and that Aeolus asshole go back to your worthless pony sites and see if Sony can give you bastards a worthwhile exclusive on that exclusiveless ass PS4 lol

    2. If it’s weak, explain why Bethseda and EA lies were exposed of “Wii U is weak” excuse when they said incompatible engines like Frostbite and Unreal 4 was tested and deemed working?

It’s because they’re fucking lazy and lying opportunists and when I say lying, I mean that they’re still making 360/PS3 games which sports the same architecture as Wii U anyway so porting shouldn’t be much of a problem. They just wanna feed you BS to make you go to the money milking so they can fuck you over with false advertised games, the ones that showed off fake, flashy graphics that’ll be watered down anyway? (Watchdogs/Destiny/CoD)

      1. Ps4 games are more hardware intensive, it could easily run any wiiu game at 1080p 60fps while there’s no way the wiiu could run games like killzone SF or infamous SS

        1. “…while there’s no way the wiiu could run games like killzone SF or infamous SS [*except the most important part: gameplay, which might benifit from the Wiimote &/or Gamepad].

          1. This is a POWER conversation, not a gameplay one.

So if graphical glitches are everywhere in a game, framerate is complete shit, and draw distance is equally bad, it doesn’t matter because gameplay?

            1. “This is a POWER conversation, not a gameplay one.”

Wait. So power re the engine is not tied to gameplay? It’s all about high-level (for a budget, x86 PC) graphics? Of course that affects framerate & draw-distance, but does this engine have a throttle? What’s its base graphical output?

& what was all that “develop both an emotional and visceral connection to what they are experiencing within the game world,” all about? Surely that connection goes beyond graphics, even æsthetics. Wouldn’t the way in which theb layer manipulated the world environment & the storytelling be more visceral & emotional than lighting & increased pologons?

& then there’s “We truly believe that our engine will help us to strengthen both the GAMEPLAY and storytelling experiences we strive to create.” Did he say ‘gameplay’?

Maybe Wii U would have a problem w/ its real-time physics, but I guess that depends on the size of the environment & how many actions transpire @ 1 time. & again, the engine’s base output odlf detail.

If its advanced artificial intelligence programming goes beyond Watson’s capabilities, or however much Wii U received of that, then there’d obviously be an issue there. But just how intelligent is its AI? For that matter, how intelligent is Wii U’s version of Watson?

& I’m unsure of what constitutes “other things.” Those could pose problems for Wii U, too. Sorry, I need more info regarding the ingine & Wii U’s architecture. But if that pic is any indication, then what’s the big deal. Yeah, it’s static, but it ain’t exactly photorealistic or highly detailed. Maybe compared to PS360, but just barely.

              1. *Wouldn’t the way in which THE Player manipulated the world…

*& again, the engine’s base output OF detail IS?

*But just how intelligent is its [THE ENGINE’S] AI?

                *more detail regarding the Engine

Chungo lungo that’s a lot of corrections.

        2. We hear the same old BS before. But again, you dont just make the game and it’ll magically run like butter. It has to be built from the ground up to utilize every inch of hardware possible. Again, you sound like a fanboy without a single clue of how things work. Your tiny mind thinks you know because you look at numbers and visuals but internally, its more complicated than that. Try designing your own game testing both Nintendo/Sony waters first before even thinking about arrogantly speaking out what you don’t know.

      2. TLOU Remastered is 1080p 60 fps
        Wolfenstein is 1080p 60 fps
        Tomb Raider is 1080p 60fps
        Diablo 3 is 1080p 60 fps
Tearaway Unfolded is 1080p 60 fps
        Outlast is 1080p 60 fps
PVZ Garden Warfare is 1080p 60 fps
        Planetside 2 is 1080p 60fps
        Sniper Elite 3 is 1080p 60fps
        MGS V is 1080p 60 fps
Metro Redux is 1080p 60 fps
Murdered: Soul Suspect is 1080p 60 fps
Blacklight Retribution is 1080p 60 fps
COD AW is 1080p 60 fps
COD Ghosts is 1080p 60 fps
        Shadow Warrior is 1080p 60fps
        Skylanders is 1080p 60fps
Project Cars will be 1080p 60fps
BF Hardline will be 1080p 60 fps
Dying Light will be 1080p 60 fps
        Uncharted 4 will be 1080p 60fps

        1. None of those can maintain the 60 fps for more than 5 seconds and the ones that do is cuz the main character is not moving or nothing is happening on the screen(last of us)

  3. The pic looks alright but why does it always have to be so brown and grey? Anyway at my age I’m past caring about graphics engines. That’s not to say I can’t admire a good looking game. I just don’t get excited about “particle effects” and “ULTRA REALISTIC EYELASH PHYSICS” (bit too sarcastic there) to be honest. The new Zelda game looks gorgeous and Mario Kart 8 proves how good a game can look without making it look realistic.

    1. Lol “look at how her eyelashes moves with the wind” games are starting to focus way to much on the small things.

    2. The only reason the pic is in those colours is because it’s clearly an example of what deus ex could look like on the engine…it’s simply the colour scheme used for Human revolution and most likely future deus ex games as well, they’re relatively common cyberpunk colours lol….I’m sure it can run full colour gameplay as well :P

    3. lord ghost : king of the federation

clearly more colors than brown and gery. may be nintendo fans need to go back to doctor mario the eyes and asses checked for butthurtiods

      1. You should go to the doctor because you have been burned several times. also you’ve been exposing your butthurt because right now you’ve been “praising” nintendo, but we know the truth behind that behavior.

          1. Don’t use ‘he’ or any similar terms three times in one sentence, it’s redundant.

It’s not ‘write’, it’s ‘type’, referring to the usage of the keyboard to post one’s thoughts.

            So speak for yourself?

              1. I don’t even know him. And why would I need to share a room with him? If you’re implying that I should sleep with him, then I’m sorry to tell you that I’m straight. He’ll need to find someone else, unfortunately. ;P

    4. Guess who is back? I’m back with vengeance. Syke just playing, I missed this website and my trash talking to the wii u and Nintendo but I’m enjoying my wii u a lot than my ps4 can’t wait to play captain toad tomorrow.

        1. Just like Frostbite 3 and Unreal 4 WHICH both were tested on Wii U behind closed doors and worked but still 3rd parties wanna BS around Wii U because they have stupid ass excuses for issues with Nintendo as a company, not the system

      1. DX:HR was a gem when it came to atmosphere and game’s universe. If this new engine is a success, this should add even more to the already breathtaking DX:HR’s Detroit.
