Is The Shortage Of GameCube Adapters Due To PDP Being Annoyed With Nintendo?

One of the readers has written in to say that he’s had a good talk with one of the managers at EB Games in Canada and has discussed with him why the GameCube adapters are so hard to come by. The manager said that it’s because PDP, the producers of the GameCube-styled Wired Fight Pad, are annoyed with Nintendo for advertising the adapter as the only way to play with a Gamecube controller, despite the fightpad being an officially licensed product. This is only a rumour and it could come down to the fact that Nintendo failed to anticipate the demand. Either way, it’s extremely interesting.

          1. How does the hori feel compared to a 1st party? My friend said the pdp felt cheap, which I expected but the hori look much better.

      1. My friend tried one and says it’s too light and the joystick was too loose or something like that. Still curious about the hori brand ones though, which look a little closer to the original.

  1. What? This doesn’t make any sense. The thing PDP makes isn’t wired, it plugs into the Wii Remote so it is wireless. People who want a true wired experience for minimal input delay aren’t interested in it. And why the heck would Nintendo even care about PDP anyway? Official GameCube controller vs a GameCube-style controller that plugs into the Wiimote… Two different things.

    1. what u talking about, this plugs into the gamecube adapter. the horki one is the one that plusvinto the wii remote

      1. Both the Hori one, and the PDP one are technically Classic Controllers. they plug into the Wiimote, not the gamecube port.

    2. The adapter allows for old GameCube controllers to be reused on the Wii U (its how you can have up to 8 players) the adapter is what their talking about, not the new Wii remote connected controller 🎮

  2. That doesn’t make a lick of sense if PDP doesn’t make the adapter. How would one company affect the manufacturing of something someone else makes?

    1. It’s actually not to bad. I bought one because my wife hates the Wii Mote controller scheme and we don’t have any working Gamecube paddles. It’s a pretty good quality controller with my only complaint is that it’s weird having the Wii mote sticking out of it. It has the same look and feel as a Gamecube controller and it’s defiantly better than paying $80 for the adapter.

      1. Adapter price at retail is not $80. I got two, both pre ordered. I’m honestly staggered by the amount of people who didn’t realize this whole shortage would happen. It’s currently only compatible with one game, of course it would be in short supply lol.

        1. He’s probably talking total. 20 for adapter 60 for two gamecube controllers plus any tax, or shipping if its online.

        2. Sorry, I meant $80 for the adapter on Ebay/Amazon. Most people didn’t preorder it and with the shortage they are selling for a pretty penny.

    2. My friend says the pdp one feels cheap, and is returning it to get a regular first party. Not sure about the hori, but I wouldn’t go pdp.

      1. @LordZedd The hori feel good in hand, but personally having played the original GC controller for so long nothing can beat it but owning so many 3rd party controllers I have to say the hori is by far the best one. Only con the shoulder triggers will get some getting use to since its not press sensitive like the GC which im use to which ive quickly was adjusted to after a few smash matches..

        1. I love my clickety shoulder buttons on the original, I may eventually get an hori one but for now I have plenty of new first party ones I got for smash lol.

          1. Yeah same here I totally love it too but my GC controllers, wavebird and pros are being used by my brothers and cousins so I had no choice but to use the Hori..lol

                  1. Niceee! Yeah for some reason I cant play as good with Luigi on the 3ds like I do wiiu, luigi is actually my 1st main in brawl and im trying to main him in wiiu (current main bowser) any cool luigi comboc tips?

                    1. Unfortunately I don’t main him, so I couldn’t truly give much advice, my brother probably could. He’s good at hitting the Up B sweet spot, I haven’t really used him in multiplayer on the U version. I noticed his jumps are different than in brawl and he slides a bit, seems like he changes a lot from game to game where as Mario stays rather similar and easy to remember. Luigi’s forward aerial attack, the quick chops, are awesome I know though. He tears through master hands and master core with it cause you can get like 3 or 4 good chops in from jumping before landing. Other than that I can’t really say much lol. I do like how they gave him the Ice balls as a custom move, but since Mario is one of my mains I feel left out lol. The fast fireball and big fireball Mario customs are trash in my opinion lol.

    1. Excuse but Smash Bros. players are morons for buying it? You’ll be a bigger moron for buying another fucking Madden, Call of Duty, Watchdogs over GTA5 and even Destiny after exposed for being a video game scam artist.

      1. Yes they are morrons for not playing smash yet because they can’t play with a dated controller from 2001.

I wont even let anyone bring a adapter over to my house to play smash. Pros and wiimote & nunchucks only.

        1. Yes, let’s use a crappy control scheme, not to mention having the wireless delay. You sound like quite the party pooper. You mad cuz you couldn’t get one?

        2. That dated controller is far better than the pro controller which was dated on release. It is trash compared the the gamecube. Nintendo went cheap as hell on them so please with that shit about getting over a dated controller. I’m not playing with trash cause they released trash when I have a much better controller suited for the game where every single button and joystick feels like it was put in place for that game specifically. Pro doesn’t even have analog triggers or pressure sensitive triggers, and a much weaker rumble. They make a cheaper controller and charge more for it, and people who suck at smash like you who aren’t good enough to know the difference a controller actually makes in the game call people morons for not buying trash? Who’s the real moron? The ones eating nintendo’s dick and buying whatever cheap trash they put out, or the long time fans who know quality when they see it and play it? Get out with that nonsense, so tired of poor people who can’t afford the cube controller and adapters so they sit with the pro their moms got them cause they can’t afford to buy their own shit and call others morons for being able to afford the extra controllers, or people who just simply aren’t good enough to know how much difference a controller makes putting in their ill-informed snarky opinions on this topic. And wow you actually use a wiimote or nunchuck? Haha that’s hilarious. I would never allow someone to have to use such horrible control schemes for smash. The wiimote doesn’t even have enough buttons! What is this, sega genesis?

        3. And before you say some dumb ass thing like “Oh if you’re good enough you should be able to play good with any controller” just know that yes, that may be true, but you will still notice and play better depending on what you have. I pity someone playing with a wiimote against a gamecube controller player. Just cause you are good enough to play with anything doesn’t mean you should settle for cheap controller options with expensive price tags.

  3. I’ve been looking all over for the gamecube adapter. I feel Nintendo annoyed PDP because its only initial use is for Smash Bros and not any other games like what Nintendo told to PDP about its use. Nowadays Classic Controllers are the only thing that can be used for WIi’s virtual console if ported to Wii U. Would love if Nintendo would expand upon the adapter for virtual console and other games!

    1. sherlockwillfightbilbo

Wii Mode is just so awful. I had to buy Classic Controllers to play my Virtual Console games. Wii Mode also freezes my Wii U when I do certain things. I have to actually unplug the power cord; holding the power button on the console does nothing.

Having the GamePad show the screen is great, but having the GamePad function as a GC/CC is so obvious. Furthermore, the fact that the Wii/Wii U recognize Wiimote, Wiimote+Nunchuk, GC, CC, GamePad, AND UPro controllers as individual controllers is ridiculous and creates all these complications.

  4. How are they annoyed over something as stupid as Nintendo saying Smash 4 only works with GC which is beyond untrue since there are several control types as explained from their Smash Bros. Nintendo Direct last month?

It’s just them being pissy over nothing but having to work harder to meet the high demand for the controllers. Well, they agreed to produce them and now they have to do it so it’s their job and problem to resolve.

  5. Is PDP working with Nintendo on the manufacturing of the GCN Controller Adapters? Otherwise, it doesn’t make any sense!

  6. I own the Mario and Yoshi controllers. They are not to bad for those who miss the feel of a Gamecube controller and just want the nostalgia. Honestly I prefer the 3DS or the Wii U pro controller, but my wife loves them and so do her little brothers.

  7. First off, the fight pad still isn’t a Gamecube controller, smash bros recognizes it as a classic controller, so Nintendo isn’t wrong to say the adapter is the only way to play with a Gamecube controller.
Secondly, I have the fight pad, it feels cheap and bulky compared to a real Nintendo product, I still use it as there are no adaptors in my city and it works fine, but just don’t buy it expecting it to be identical to an actual Gamecube controller

  8. No, the thing is that Nintendo had an employee who rebelled against them and made plans to stop the production of the adapters. I think he’s either from NoA or NoE. Now, Nintendo isn’t sure who exactly it is, but I think they’re close to finding out who it was, and he’s get fired.

  10. JTZ from tribe of Judah

Too bad the media want report the sales of the adapters because it sold well. Yet reported low selling bayonetta 2 right away. Smash been out for 2 weeks and no sales results of how it did its first full week yet. If it had low sales they would have reported it.

  11. JTZ from tribe of Judah

Also why won’t the media report how or if Wii U hardware sales increased or not because of Smash yet? We saw Bayonetta not doing much to hardware sales in a week.
