Seeing as you are a sony fan I commend you for admitting PS4’s success is partially undeserved (at least the level of success). I’m not against sony or anything, but I don’t think the system is that amazing to sell so much. I’m not gonna be a fanboy and say it has no games, it does have some good ones for sure, but I don’t think any system this gen has really done anything special. And hype is a big part of the sales. Gaming mentalities are just spoiled these days. You gotta get the hyped up game that’s everywhere or you’re not a gamer! And if you don’t get it in the first week, no point in buying cause the games already old!
The Wii proves that software sell a console, and the 3DS proved that too, I don’t see the Vita selling like crazy. The problem with the Wii U is it doesn’t look badass and the name confused the casuals. The PS4 is all about power and the “cool” console that destroyed Xbox One in E3 so all the nerds went for it. But still, it doesn’t have the quality and exclusives the Wii U has, sure the Wii U has no 3rd party, but I rather have another Mario game than a broken AC game.

The problem with Wii U is no advertising, weak hardware, no third party, and no third party support at launch. Say what you want about third parties, but they are incremental to consoles. Besides, there are plenty of third party gems, like Far Cry, Dragon Age
This may be true at the moment, becouse of the hype for the eighth generation consoles is so big. But that hype will die down. And people will purchase the console that has the better games.
Sofware will always drive hardware. People knew the Ps4 would eventually get good games, thats why we bought them. If your two or three years into a consoles life, and there are still no good games, or no good games coming, I can assure you people would stop buying that console.

Honestly I don’t understand the hype behind sales, I mean if something you like is not doing outstandingly well, but doing well enough, then what’s the problem? You should still be able to enjoy your console, your games, and not worry about a dumb sales competition.
It’s obvious the Wii U will never surpass PS4 or even X1 numbers, but that shouldn’t be a problem if the console is selling well enough… well, at least no for me since I’m not an investor or anything like that.
Personally there’s nothing that could make me have a PS4, even for free I would still sell it because I don’t like anything PlayStation. PS4 could sell 50 million units and I still wouldn’t care. I will still be enjoying the good games on my Wii U and in the future X1.
Sales do affect a company’s future decisions. If a game like SMB NES didn’t sell well, do you really think Mario would be the mascot of today’s Nintendo?
