Miyamoto Says If Some Amiibo Are Discontinued Nintendo Will Release The Amiibo In Card Form

Amiibo are a hot topic at the moment and are facing severe shortages as Nintendo fans snap them up in their droves. Nintendo has already said that some will eventually be discontinued to make way for new stock in stores. In a recent interview Miyamoto said that if a certain Amiibo figure was discontinued then they can release an Amiibo in card form with the same functionality.

We’re not making promises for certain figures, but the way “amiibo” is designed is that certain games can have “amiibo” specifically for that game. Other games can take advantage of past “amiibo” that developers want to make their game compatible with. In the future, we have the option, if certain “amiibo” figures are no longer available in stores, to release an “amiibo” in card form with the same functionality.

        1. Yeah, well what happens when your preorders are CANCELLED due to no stock? What then smart guy? It’s happened to me twice now. Another one this morning.

      1. And another idea that’s being put forward is to make cheaper, smaller figures. I’m surprised Nintendo doesn’t get it. People are not just buying to play; they are buying to collect.

    1. Uhm okay… then get the figures asap, don’t wait until the card form comes out to decide to get it. You gotta be on that shit if you really want it…

      1. You act like it’s as easy as that. The window of availability was way too small before they sold out. Not everyone can afford to buy all the Amiibos as soon as they become available. We have more important things to spend money on, and the fact that they were released so close to the Holiday season is not helping at all.

        1. I didn’t mean to make it sound easy. In reality you HAVE to be on it if you really want it. What else am I gonna say to you. It’s gonna be on the market long enough for you to get the ones you really want. Again, you can’t wait if you know the one you want is popular.

  1. Card form? Really? I’m willing to bet that the majority of people who are buying these are not getting them for the functionality, but simply as a collectible.

    1. They do have a long history of doing their own thing and not giving a shit about what their fans want.

I guess not caring about their fans is what made their fans stop caring about them.

  2. I would want them more for sm4sh functionality.. But the figurines themselves are pretty great. Card forms would be awesome for those hard to find amiibo, such as WFT.

  3. This is bullshit, anyone else get a email cancelling their Lucario amiibo pre-order this morning? This exclusive shit needs to stop or at least not have limited supply..

  4. I’m all for it. Cards can be bought in packs, and take up less space in stores. And, they’re cheaper to make, and in turn, cheaper to buy.

  5. Doesn’t really seem like a fitting replacement tbh. I know my main interest in Amiibos is having the figures, a card just simply isn’t the same

      1. Ugh, don’t even get me started, so tired of dealing with this amiibo mess. Nobody knows shit, people are opening pre-orders when they aren’t getting enough stock to fill, no one knows when anything is actually getting into stores… It is just ridiculous already.

Many Toys R Us reps are blaming Nintendo because they keep confusing them on the amount of stock and I have to believe them, because I just came from Bestbuy, Target, Walmart last night and they all pretty much said the same things and were just about as clueless as Toys R Us was about any of the new amiibo’s.

  7. I wouldve actually bought cards only from the get go if those were available too.

    Regardless of price.

amiibo figures simply dont look socially acceptable standing around in your home, while cards can be stored pretty much anywhere without any big problem.

    1. Don’t loo socially acceptable standing around in your home?? Why do you care about what other people think of your Amiibo??

    2. Lol socially acceptable, a shame that you care too much about what stupid people think about you. If someone is going to judge you based on figurines in your house, they probably aren’t worth the time to begin with. Very immature.

        1. LOL did you just imply that you are stupid, and that I should not care what you think… You’re right about that… LOL, nice one. You never cease to amaze me with your failed retorts.

That would be great and all if you could make a point about anything without it just turning into you complaining about another product instead or always bringing up completely random topics in your defense. You aren’t capable of debating, you simply rinse and repeat the same boring rhetorical bullshit you always do. You never make any sense, you always contradict yourself, you call me out on things you do yourself all the time, like yesterday night for instance and you are the one always twisting my word. It never ends with you.

Just like when I said around 2006, you tried to act like a smart ass about it saying 2007. I don’t even have to go back to that article to know you didn’t adress the fact I said “around”… You try so hard to make me look stupid but you fail every single freaking time. Did you forget when you told me dates don’t matter and you thought Japan didn’t matter? When you tried to correct me about when the PS1 actually first released. I didn’t lol.

So easy to go back and point out your hypocritical nature that I’m speaking of. I can’t say around 2006 but you can say stupid shit like this and you’re okay with it. See my point?

PS1 came in 1995 if you actually did your homework right. lol”

It was released in Japan in 1994…. Do your homework…. I do mine.”

          December 3, 1994

Close enough to 1995. It barely had 4 weeks left of 1994. lol And besides, nobody pays attention to Japanese releases. lol”

Yet you want to go around acting like your some open minded guru all the time when you are by far one of the most biased individuals around here.

*Cough* As they say, I think you were just exposed… lol.

    3. No doubt man. Why the hell do you care what other people think about you! Live your life the way you want to live it brother. Life is too short to worry about small things like that. I’m 30 years old and have nearly every Amiibo sitting on my mantle. I’m actually very proud of them to be honest!..lol

  9. All I know is that I’m not too happy with how Nintendo is handling the amiibo’s. One person says they are discontinuing them, the next day Nintendo says they aren’t and will get more stock soon, now here we are again and they’re saying the opposite.

Now this mess with Toys R Us and Toys R Us is blaming Nintendo for shortages on stock. My Lucario was cancelled last night. On top of that, they’ve completely pulled Lucario and many of the other amiibo’s from the Toys R Us website, as in they aren’t even on it anymore.

    1. It’s better for Nintendo as a company that these Amibos retain thier value. If Nintendo just flooded the market place with Amiibos (which they could do) the collectors value would drop, and in turn Nintendo’s stock would also drop. When people are selling rare and hard to find Amiibos for thousands of dollars online, thats proof of a healthy product, and good for business. Now, I admit they should be available to everyone at least for a short while before they sell out, but thats the nature of these type of things.

I got nearly every first wave Amibo out there. However, I cannot find a single second wave Amiibo. It sucks, but I understand why it’s happening.

And most of the non-sense thats happening is the retailers doing, not Nintendo’s..

    1. I think people will still buy the cards for collectors items.lol Nobody really cares to much about the functionality with the exception of Smash Bros.

      1. You’re right about one thing. Other games for Amiibo outside of Smash Bros. 4 is merely for unlocking extra content which is a meat bonus BTW. All Nintendo needs to do is make their own crossover game thats very much like Disney Infinity (not counting Skylanders since its a bigger ripoff and a boring one) but offer a different league of gameplay and open world scale.

  10. Sick of this, too. My son wanted Little Mac for Christmas. Drove all over my town on the day of release trying to find it. Best Buy, Gamestop, Walmart…no luck. WTF? I’m going to write a bitchy letter to Nintendo, not that it will do any good.

  11. Making cards instead of amiibo is an insult. The amiibo are awesome collectibles. Cards are just, well……cards.

  12. If the missing Amiibos come back as cards, I won’t bother. I’m buying these mostly for the figures, certainly not the so-so game functionality they provide. I certainly wasn’t interested in the E-Reader when it came out, making Amiibo into cards would defeat the purpose.

At least I got Little Mac. When am I ever going to find Punch-Out!! Merchandise again. ( Or any merchandise of a character that isn’t present at every single Nintendo Direct for that matter )

  13. At least make amiibi figures until they don’t sell all that much, then start making cards for those who want amiibo functionality for a lower price.

  14. If Nintendo wants to do this and lose money from it, so be it. I’ll just be sitting over here with my Marth, Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Little Mac and Diddy Kong…..watching the whole thing crumble….It might be better if they sold them it set packs….but if it’s individual and any more than 3$ per card, then that’s just stupid.

I’d rather have them start churning out recolours and reposes of them first.

  16. Screw the cards. I’m not paying a penny for them. There is no reason except to create hype for Nintendo to do this. Shame on them for screwing over their fans.

I blame both the stores AND Nintendo. I blame Nintendo for making exclusive amiibo & I blame the stores because some of them are apparently only doing fucking preorders. Gamestop, for instance, was only taking preorders of Pit amiibo. I know this because the guy at Gamestop when I got my Fox amiibo told me so when I asked if they had any Pit amiibo. This fact I discovered makes me extremely happy that I did preorder Shulk when I did. Now I just have to pray they don’t give me the middle finger & cancel my fucking preorder when Shulk is close to fucking release.

    1. Eternal Ridley Prime

I also blame Nintendo for undershipping & actually letting places like Gamestop completely kick people in a painful spot by only taking fucking preorders!
