Nintendo President Agrees There Are Too Many Cut-Scenes In Video Games Nowadays

Most of the video games we play these days are littered with lengthy cut scenes as a way to progress with the story. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata says that there are simply too many in video games nowadays and that Shigeru Miyamoto would agree with him on this statement. Iwata said that Miyamoto is one of the few developers that isn’t reliant on producing cut-scenes and he wonders what could have been done instead with the time, money and resources.

Iwata: So [modern games] are backed by this huge amount of effort and technology, but it feels like very few people remember them [story moments] or players skip over things within the game.

Kawakami: It certainly feels like there’s too many cut-scenes these days.

Iwata: Of course, you can use them effectively; I’m not trying to dismiss them completely, but I can’t help but wonder what could have been instead done with the energy [time, money, resources] that went into them. Miyamoto has never used many cut-scenes, in his games, but recently I think he has begun to think the same way, too.

          1. Well, that could situationally be a fair argument, but some of us would like to see engaging interactive storytelling experiences that transcend the weightlessness of the name “game”. I can’t tell you how often I reel at the misfortune that an entire artistic medium is burdened with a name that causes many to dismiss it as frivolous.

            1. Storytelling is great in Video Games, but making it “right”. When you make a Video game, you have to have a balance between Gameplay and story….My vote goes for more gameplay than Story. I waste $40-$60 for ONE game, so I can play it and been entertained for a while. Not saying Storytelling is bullshit, but that developers need to realize that making video games with phenomenal graphics and storytelling does not mean is a video game.

            1. Truth. Bet you didn’t either :P

When there is a site like Twitch, I can see for myself how long a game can take a person. Cutscenes included. Or if it works better for the case, sure. I’ll playthrough it one day but lack of funds says that will be awhile.

    1. Yes exactly! I enjoy cutscenes as well, especially for a game that has such a well written story. For me it always feels like I’ve accomplished a part of the game with each cutscene I get to in a game.

      1. ^ This! Though, playing Saints Row IV for the first time ever, I couldn’t get over the fact that 20 minutes, out of the first 30, was cinematic stuff… I JUST WANT TO PLAY THE FUCKING GAME

      1. As someone who is against this popular distaste for cutscenes, and someone who loves the MGS series, I really don’t understand this statement about MGS4’s cutscenes. Are you sure about that? I played and finished MGS2, 3, and 4 (currently working on Peace Walker) for the first time about a month ago as part of a series marathon to catch up with MGSV. MGS3’s gameplay ideas completely rocketed through the cap on my already high expectations, but the characters really drove the experience like no others. Snake’s reason (SPOILERS) for defecting from the US was really believable, as a highlight. They were all very believable characters, and you could tell Kojima loved writing them when he did. By contrast, when I got to MGS4, I had stepped abruptly off a cliff and fallen into a chasm of B movie dialogue (the ending seemed to defy that frame, though). Am I missing something? Don’t you see a difference between the two games? Can you elaborate on why you liked MGS4 so much? I’d really like to know, as I want very badly to like this game where it seems like Kojima actually hated writing it himself.

    1. Those games have both amazing cutscenes and amazing gameplay……….something iwata san will never approve of for his games

  1. Wow these state of minds are just wrong. Take for example, Star fox Assault, the cutscenes were really emotional toward the end, without them I wouldn’t feel as motivated to take down the Aparoid Queen. If anything, Nintendo games need more cutscenes. Hyrule Warriors has been the most exciting Zelda game story wise for me thanks to the cutscenes. Its okay if you don’t want them to talk, but at least make the reading be exciting. I mean how many times have we skipped a bunch of text talk from a Nintendo Game, compared to skipping cutscenes, how about that Iwata and Miyamoto? The more Miyamoto talks, the more crappy Star Fox sounds for me honestly.

    1. You completely misunderstand what he’s saying. He does not say that all cutscenes should be removed. But rather that nowadays, some games just rely on cutscenes and forget much more important components like gameplay, originality, etc. Hello Assassassin’s Creed or Beyond Two Souls.

        1. AC is basically repeating the same shit between two cutscenes, without any gameplay improvement from the first game. Even their trailers are not gameplay anymore, but rather short movies that have nothing to do with the game expect the overall background.

  2. Nintendo is My Blood Reborn

    I disagree.
Cutscenes help immerse people into the story, if done right.
But some games don’t need cutscenes, Smash and most racing games don’t because there is no story that needs cinematic to convey a message.

    1. I agree that cutscenes help the story of a game but some games go way overboard with them to the point there is more cutscenes than gameplay
Examples of this the FF XIII trilogy and Metal gear solid 4
Especially MGS4 as big fan of the Metal gear series MGS4 felt a drag at some times especially towards the end but… I understand why that is, since kojima wanted wrap up the story

      1. i personally can enjoy having a game with maybe 60 percent cutscene 40 percent gameplay as long as the gameplay is friggin amazing

    2. sherlockwillfightbilbo

I would disagree only about Smash. Smash U felt incredibly lacking compared to Brawl due to the lack of an Adventure Mode. I guess even reposting Melee’s would feel better, but I was hoping for cutscenes. The only reason Sakurai didn’t do it was because he didn’t have enough time.

  3. Oh my god people. They’re not saying cut scenes are bad and that you shouldn’t use them. They’re saying there’s just TOO many in most games these days. To which I would have to agree. A cutscene now and then is a nice way to help progress the story but then you have games where it feels like they need to show a cutscene every time possible. Like a lot of JRPGs for example.

    1. MGS has too many cutscenes
      TLOU has too many cutscenes
Bioshock Infinite has too many cutscenes
Xenoblade Chronicles has too many cutscenes
Even Bayonetta 2 has too many cutscenes

YET THEY ARE ALL AMAZING FUCKING GAMES. Iwata is ignorant to the current world

      1. “MGS has too many cutscenes”
But they are good and ineresting even if Kojima rubs the massage in your face at the end of the game (MGS2 anyone?)
        “TLOU has too many cutscenes”
But they help to develop the story and even so there is story devolping in game during the gameplay
“Bioshock Infinite has too many cutscenes”
But they are in game besides is an FPS (Also implying Bioshock it’s a good game with a good story which is not)
“Xenoblade Chronicles has too many cutscenes”
But they tell a good story
“Even Bayonetta 2 has too many cutscenes”
They are either short full of comedy or fast paste action oriented
Cutscenes can help a game story but way many cutscenes can make the game feel like a drag like the most recently Final Fantasy games especially the lighting trilogy which many fans myself included regard as the worst of the FF series

      2. “Of course, you can use them effectively; I’m not trying to dismiss them completely”

Did you even read? You’re ignorant.

        1. Yes i read but that wasn’t my point idiot what i’m trying to says is that alot of game know how to use them while others not Also you Most have some bad taste at story telling in gaming if you use Bioshock infinite as an example of story telling in gaming

  4. Actually I like cut scenes. It dress attention to a game and make you feel part of the movie when playing. It keeps people interested in watching people play. Like RE4 as an example.

  5. If actions = words it’s really no wonder why Nintendo’s so outdated and refuses to accept third parties……………douchebag president…..

  6. And I bet all those Nintendo fanboys are going to glorify this and carve it into their walls, beside their nude pics of Reggie and Iwata and chant this to the Holy Nintendo Bible of Covering Iwata’s Butt

  7. There are too many unskippable or unpausable cutscenes. When I play a game and am watching a cutscene essential to tell me what to do next or something, it’s always “Come here now!”, or “Feed the dog now!”, or whatever else. So immersion destroying to live with your parents.

      1. Not always, some times its because you have to pass the game at least once, or watch the cut scene at least once. They them unskippable because of the information within them. Which I don’t mind, what ticks me off are the cutscenes that can’t be skipped and you force to watch like in SMT IV, every time you die you are taken to that stupid ass cut scene and its unskipable. That is fucking annoying.

  8. Did anybody actually read the whole interview. He said they can be used well and he is not dismissing them entirely. I completely agree. Cut scenes are in games too much now. I want to play a game not watch a movie. Many of the metal gear solid games are the worst contenders of this. Especially 4. But some cut sense in strategic places can help drive the story. What I don’t like are action cut scenes. I would rather just play those segments instead of watching the character do it for me.

  9. i’m a gamer and i want VIDEOGAMES and games can deliver something that movie can’t do

    @Movie fanatics story lovers

GAMING is way more different than MOVIE STORY

if you love Movies quit gaming Simple

HALF LIFE a game from 1998 it give you a character , you live the life of that character and step by step you write the story (like the REAL WORLD)

with a game higly focused on story don’t you give that experience do you understand?

we have Cinemas go there if you want story drivin , Simple don’t waste your life on games

leave videogames to nerds like me

        1. COUGH LITTLEBIGPLANET RATCHET AND CLANK CRASH BANDICOOT SLY COOPER JAK AND DAXTER JOURNEY COUGH

I especially hate the retards who stay ignorant to facts when it can be looked up in seconds

        2. for this gen i own a PS4 , and to be honest i buy a Game console to play GAMES and not Cinematic Experience , how i can call you Gamer when most of Modern Gamers love Movies more than Games ?? seriously Iwata is Right a Game should be a game and a Movie should be a Movie
most of so called gamers are saying Movies are better than Games ,just look how they react with TheLastofUs and now Untill Dawn , and they attack David Scott Jeffe for making a GAME (Drawn to Death) you “Gamers” don’t know what a game is

          1. Did you even read the interview? Clearly Iwata PRAISED cutscenes, just not too many of them like Heavy Rain you idiot. You just hypocritically agreed with him ROFLMAO

    1. It seems this gamer forgot the first word in VIDEO games -_- if people were more like you the industry would be at a standstill with stories like Doom… Yes it was a great game but the story was the stupidest thing to ever be put in a video game.

      1. VIDEO ????
do you know VIDEO games doesn’t mean Cinematic right ?
VIDEO is a sense of Output and a Games(in this case a Gaming Console) is a Input (instead of playing with a Toy which can’t be animated, you play with a Virtual Toy on your Screen)

p.s sorry for my English , but i hope you get my point

    2. Exactly. & you don’t need to spend upwards of $60 on each movie or TV show, even CGI-only ones. To me, interactive movies are a scam & devs need to make up their minds about which medium to work in. But, focusing on a more static creation as opposed to the variables of gameplay is a lot easier & sadly rakes in a lot more money for them than an actual game or actual movie would.

  10. I agree actually. Cutscenes are just overused in games nowadays. Sure they immerse you into the story and that’s great. But isn’t better to play a game rather than to watch all the cutscenes? MGS, like a lot of people said here, have A LOT of cutscenes and I’m not gonna lie is ok as well since that’s kind of a story driven game. There are also some games that are done right like Uncharted where instead of watching the action happen you experience it. Also RPGs have a lot too but it’s also ok because most of them are story driven games as well. But video games are meant to be played not watched. I think Sonic Colors did it perfectly. There were cutscenes but only at certain times and they weren’t too much or too less

    1. Video games to me are a source of entertainment. Whether you are watching a cut scene or playing the game, if you are entertained then the game is doing it’s job. I love cut scenes and wish Nintendo would use more in thier games. Xenoblade Chronicles will probably be my favorite game of 2015, and the storyline of that game is what will keep me emotionally involved. Nintendo seems like they are becoming too occupied with making too many pick up and play games as opposed to great epic adventures.

DRAGONS LAIR GAMING CAN FUCK OFF REAL GAMING HAS GAMEPLAY

  13. I don’t mind cutscenes when they aren’t too long, but I think that telling story through gameplay is a better way of engaging the player

  14. I’ve known for a long time that when a game is more cutscene than gameplay, that when the controller is idle for more than 3 mins., the devs added filler. This trend seemed to have taken off last gen, when devs were given a lot more power (though the leap still hasn’t been as big as 6th gen). They apparently couldn’t afford to update the graphics AND offer plenty of gameplay, not w/ out either increasing the price of games or cutting the product w/ fillers. [‘Course now, they’ve not only jacked up the price of games, but added cutscenes, also stripped content & offer that content via DLC & microtransactions. EA admits to doing whatever they can get away w/ to make a profit.] Either that, or devs are wannabe filmmakers too afraid to go all in w/ the movie medium. Even Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes in the 6th gen was like ‘either shit or get off the pot’.

Playing Liberation Maiden annoyed the crap outta me; play, watch, play, watch; go, stop, go, stop. My sister says her friend has The Last of Us & it’s the same BS, & he also noticed how the story is hampered by the gameplay & vice versa; they aren’t usually perceptive people rather deeply into that “cool” factor & ‘monkey see, monkey do’. My friends have a PS4. They play Destiny & Shadow of Mordor, but ignore the cutscenes, waiting for the chance when they can actually play. I played those games, too; I had the same issue, plus SoM’s excessive violence (it’s LotR for crying out loud), & Destiny’s overreliance w/ online & multiplayer turned me off. For me, only Eternal Darkness, Killer7, NMH, & MadWorld justified their cutscenes.

But for the vast majority of examples, cutscenes are filler, or over-glorified load screens. It’s fine to have an intro, a good cutscene in the middle, & a blowout @ the end, but c’mon, I wanna game (remember when that word was also a verb?). If devs & pubs are trying to keep their “game” footage off YouTube, then it’s likely they created a movie rather than a game. Unless they’re trying to hide shoddy gameplay, why would watching a game deter someone from experiencing the gameplay? Watching & playing are 2 very different experiences. If I wanted to delve into the story, Metroid Prime & even Resident Evil [pre RE 4] found the right mechanic to convey the finer details & allowed me to decide when my momentum concluded.

  15. I can see his point. I’ve played games where I will just get out of a cutscene walk like 5 feet, and I’m in another one.

  16. he has a point to some extent, but theres so many kind of games nowadays its hard to say theres too many cutscenes, there’s defineitly alot of games that I think could’ve cut down on them for gameplay but then there’s also games like metal gear or uncharted where the cutscenes are as important as the gameplay.

    1. LOL CUT SCENE FANBOYING

Too many cutscenes are very annoying for games that overuse them. But the cutscenes that annoy me the most are fucking CGI cutscenes that look nothing like the graphics of the gameplay. They utterly butcher the game’s immersion. Games like Xenoblade Chronicles do cutscenes right. In fact, I hate CGI cutscenes with a passion… especially in games where we can change our character(s)’s appearance(s).

    1. Eternal Ridley Prime

And those dissing Iwata must really love their interactive movies. I guess they read the title only then went straight to comments to whine. >.<
