AMD Designing Chip For A Game Console To Be Introduced In 2016

Devinder Kumar, the CFO of AMD, has announced that the company is working on a chip for a video game console that’s due to be released in 2016. With the Wii U performing below expectation it could well be Nintendo that’s planning to bring out a new games console in 2016, but that does seem a little too soon. Maybe it’s for their Quality of Life platform they’re busy developing?

The design wins are interesting because the funding, the R&D dollars for customizing the parts for the products to our customers is precisely pre-funded by the customer and like I said the workload is started and we are spending the money and the resources and the work to go ahead and design the parts to be introduced sometime in 2016.

We didn’t say at which space it is in. I’m not going to give too much detail. I’ll say that one is x86 and one is ARM, and atleast one will be on gaming, right. But that’s about as much as you going to get out me today, because the customers from the standpoint to be fair to them. It is their product. They launch it. They announce it and then just like the game console or the parts you find out that its AMD’s APU that’s been used in those products.

Thanks, Michelle and Shuhei Yoshida

    1. The main point is where have you all been? I reported this news over a week ago. All the major sites are so slow to pick up on this little bombshell. Regardless of what this turns out to be, Nintendo’s new home console is coming in 2016. Guaranteed fact! Nintendo need and want out of Wii U as soon as possible. It’s a tumour that needs to be lanced so they can start afresh. They’d do it sooner only they’ve games too far into development for Wii U, the backlash would be huge and they still have a backlog of Wii U console stock to clear.

      1. “a backlog of Wii U console stock to clear.”

Uhhh no they don’t. They haven’t had a backlog since December of last year and have only been maintaining a stock since Mario Kart came out.

        1. He can’t guarantee anything. I would bet that it is not a console at all but it is an upgraded Gamepad. However, If it is a new console from Nintendo though, it will be an upgraded WiiU I think.

      2. With wiiU sales picking up, I just don’t see them replacing the wiiU by 2016. There’s no way. It’s been doing pretty well these last couple of months. Who would buy this new console knowing that nintendo will forget about it if it under performs. I buy all nintendo home consoles and handhelds day 1, but if they did something like that I wouldn’t take the risk anymore. That probably goes for everyone else. It’s just a really bad business practice that would hurt them more than help them. They stuck it out with the gamecube, they’re gonna stick it out with the wiiU, I can almost guarantee that.

        1. Yeah I pretty much agree, it they started ditching console too quick, I would think twice about when and if to purchase one.

        2. What if the new Wii u or Wii Ultra is a Wii u with just more power like the new 3ds . It still play Wii u games but few games will be exclusive for it because of the power it can handle. I hope its the fusion that was the early rumor or so called leak or Nintendo new console.

      3. I learned about this a while back also. Seeing this news more and more just tells me that it isn’t bogus like I previously thought.
Their next console will be in the power game more so than the Wii U could ever be, and [possibly] more than the PS4 and XBONE.

    2. Actually Commander there are strong rumors that Nintendo is releasing a home console/handheld hybrid in either 2017 or 2018 so handheld could be a part of the new home console

        1. Whoops………my bad sir. I still think we are in a great position to defend ourselves from the Sony and Microsoft forces in the next generation console war

          1. Of course…

Our militia forces have completly overrun the Sonyan militia forces with the 3DS but our main forces continue to struggle…

Several main factors will give us the advantage next generation, we just have to use the cattle masses better for a big portion of the top secret plan to function as foreseen…

    1. True certainly when you see that the ps4/one processors are the bottleneck.

My i7 920 from 6 years ago still holds up well today. Pc master race.

      1. I think the flip side to that is that AMD processors are way cheaper than Intel. That being said I prefer Intel myself, but I know plenty of people that would rather not spend the extra moola

  1. Well whatever it’s for, it’s not Xbox, they announced a partnership with Nvidia a while back if I recall correctly

  2. it is probaly a 3ds successer. the 3ds currently uses an arm 9 and arm 11 processer. the ds used arm arm 7 and arm 9. if nintendo keeps the trend going this seems to fit. it is also onlly x86. that seems a little low for a home console.

        1. He is actually right about it being a custom chip, they are just trying to find chips that closely relate so they have something to compare it to. Pretty much everything except the graphics processor is custom in someway, even the RAM. It why people are constantly guessing on the specs of 3DS and the Wii U, unless you are using a DevKit and you completely understand it, then its all just speculation of what the specs are.

Either way the source doesn’t even know if its Nintendo or someone else, the new source is just speculating by injecting there own feelings about the Wii U.

          1. Also, they have a mistake on the RAM on the site, if you do a quick search they actually show the RAM as a single chip even on X-rays.

    1. That could be it. Twilight Princess is a good example of them doing this. They released it on Gamecube and then on Wii. Maybe they will do the same with the Wii U Zelda?

    2. Yeah I agree but Intel will charge Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo way too much money for their CPUs even though they are far more efficient than AMD’s

  3. BOTH ARE GARBAGE X86 CPUS ARE HOT-BIG-OLD TECH

GPUS FROM AMD ARE FINE BUT X86 CPUS ARE A AGED JOKE

LIKELY ARM CPU SOC FOR NEW DS THERE ALSO WORKING ON XBONE SLIM

WIIU IS MAKING A FURTUNE XBONE HAS LOST BILLIONS ALREADY

I WOULD LOVE A HYBRID CONSOLE WITH SCALABLE SPECS

  4. Maybe it’s AMD’s own console like how Nvidia made the Nvidia Shield Tablet which can be used as a console (And it’s pretty cool).

  5. It would be a wiiu succesor but they wont screw up they are nintendo for the love of god! They would do the same that they did with gameboy color and new 3ds! They release a new system stronger than the old one both share the same games but they are a few exclusives for the new one… As time passed there would be more new exclusives and less from the old one and then you have it easy peasy
I bet that it would be a stronger wiiu but theyll continue to do the games compatible with the old wiiu so the long time fans that only buy nintemdo because of theyr exclusives would be able to use their old wiiu BUT those who are on the fence of getting a wiiu or not because they love nintendo but also thurd party can get this new system poweful enough to run ps4 and xbone games!! Doing so they will rule the fucking world consolewise

  6. If Nintendo plays their cards right, they could pull ahead with a new console if they make the price just right. Imagine what if they were to make a exclusive deal with GameStop and Walmart, both of which do game trade-ins, and made it where you could get the new console for only $100 or so with trade in of a previous gen console. Especially if it can play Wii and Wii U game, maybe even GameCube Games, I don’t know too many gamers who wouldn’t trade in their newly bought Wii U for a machine like that.

  7. new DS followed by new console or a hybrid handheld console witch tech wise makes sense theres no need to build seperate systems anymore all depends on how nintendo see things or do something disruptive a hybrid could be disruptive two consoles for the price of one

scalable soc high powered docked low powered handheld

    or

a handheld that docks to a dockingstation gpu

imagine a wiiu type box with a slot the handheld docks into the specs of the handheld go from battery mode to full power and bus link to a console gpu inside

the controlers are gamepad wii remote and traditional the system works as a handheld or a full blown console it has solid state storage or both solid and harddrive

the docking console os can be accessed with the handheld wirlessly so u walk into your home take out your handheld from your pocket abd either use it on small screen or on tv and play games access net etc

to unlock full blown mode you slip the handheld into the docking slot games can be of three types

handheld only but playable on tv

handheld and console scalable res and graphics

or console only FULL POWER no handheld version

most games being handheld and console

full backward compatable with wiiu and all controllers

    1. third party support has nothing to do with power LOL INDUSTRY ZOMBI

wiiu can run any game released on ps4 they are shutting out nintendo BECAUSE NINTENDO HAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE MORE POWERFUL this has been the case from the mid 1980s when the american videogame-computing industry crashed and nintendo became the richest and biggest videogaming company

this started the CONSOLE WAR they have shut out every nintendo system ever since

NINTENDO SHUT OUT STILL LED THE INDUSTRY IN QOALITY INNOVATION CONTROLS AND GAMEPLAY every system made more profit than any competetor

gameboy n64 gamecube etc etc etc ALL MADE MORE PROFIT THAN ANY THIRD PARTY AND ANY PLAYSTATION

ITS THIS POWER THE INDUSTRY FEARS NINTENDO ARE THE IPHONE OF GAMING TO EXPLAIN IT IN LAYMENS TERMS

these third partys are all going broke and struggle to even make a penny

NINTENDO WARNED THE INDUSTRY IN 2005 2006 IT WAS GOING TO DISRUPT THE INDUSTRY AS THEY DID IN 1985 WITH NES

the industry SHIT ITS SELF AND CREATED A MASS HATE CAMPAIGN AGAINST NINTENDO

THERE DOOMED THERE GOING THERE SHIT WII WONT SELL ETC ETC ETC KNOWING NINTENDO WOULD DISRUPT THEM

micheal pachter was payed to lie about them and try and fool investors as the industry went into melt down

IWATA CLEARLY STATED AS A WORNING TO THE HATERS WE ARE GOING TO DIS-RUPT THE INDUSTRY AS WE DID IN 1985

DS and Wii then out sold and out profited every console IN HISTORY CONBINED and set the records and nintendo ALREADY THE MOST POWERFUL VIDEOGAME COMPANY BECAME EVER MORE POWERFUL WITH INSANE PROFITS NEVER BEFORE SEEN

as nintendo made more money in one gen THAN ALL VIDEOGAMING PROFITS IN HISTORY COMBINED

SONY WENT INTO MELTDOWN LOOSING BILLIONS APON BILLIONS EVERY PENNY SONY EVER MADE FROM GAMING WAS DESTROYED WIPED OUT AS IF PLAYSTATION NEVER EXISTED

fact 1 ps3 lost many times more money than ps1 and 2 ever made all wipped away in a gen

fact 2 wii and DS made more money than ever before seen in one gen

fact 3 EA games the biggest third party lost BILLIONS LAST GEN and continue to loose millions apon millions

fact 4 xbox devision of ms has never made a profit in its history it has lost 20 billion from xbox original to xbox one today 20 billion in loss

nintendo finds itsself today shut out as tye industry is desperatly trying to SLAY THE DRAGON

but even without third partys NINTENDO IS BACK IN PROFITS OF 100S of millions a 1/4 year and will return to biggest yearly profits in the industry

THIS IS WHATS HAPPENING IF NINTENDO MADE A CONSOLE 100 X MORE POWERFUL THAN ANYTHING ELSE OUT THERE THIRD PARTYS WILL STILL IGNORE IT

      STOP BELEIVING THE INDUSTRY

JESUS THERES BOOKS WRITEN ABOUT THIS TRY READING AND EDUCATING YOUR DUMB ASS SELVES

I MADE 250 THOUSAND POUNDS FROM A 35000 POUND INVESTMENT LAST GEN

      BECAUSE I LISTENED TO IWATA

WE ARE GOING TO DISRUPT THE INDUSTRY I LISTENED TO HIS WORDS WHILST YOU DUMMYS THOUGHT PS3 WAS Dshit

  8. Eeck. It would be sad to see the Wii U go so soon. It really is a fantastic console. It was just not supported by enough people.

We always talk about games being “gems” like Bayonetta 1 and 2, but I think Wii U is a “gem” console for sure.

    1. I think Nintendo will continue to support the Wii U up until 2018 because if their doing a home console/handheld hybrid as the rumors suggest then the console will be a little pricey (expect it to be $399 at the least). So most likely the new console will launch in 2017 but I think Nintendo would want to continue to get as much profit as they can from the Wii U and the upcoming New 3DS

  9. EA GAMES TOOK TO THE STAGE AT E3 SAYING WE ARE SUPPORTING WIIU ALL ARE GAMES ARE COMMING

WHEN WIIU RELEASED THEY THEN SAID WE AINT SUPPORTING IT

WAKE UP THE INDUSTRY IS A JOKE AND FEARS NINTENDO

  10. They will not replace the Wii U in 2016. Late 2017 at the earliest. They will not risk losing consumer faith. I also seriously doubt it’s a handheld as well. So they release the “new” 3ds in 2015 in the west, and then another brand new handheld in 2016? No, I don’t think so.

This is likely Sony related. Ps3 slim, or something along those lines.

  11. ea games told dice to pretend wiiu cannot run battlefield

whilst saying at the same time the engine ran on phones EA are shit scared of nintendo

EA games wouldnt publish crysis 3 on wiiu even tho crytech had it running at 1080p on wiiu WITCH THEY CONFIRMED it was 90% ready to go they said it ran on wiiu at 1080p without second screen support and in two screen mode hit 720p

EA refused to publish it on wiiu THE INDUSTRY STINKS TO HIGH HELL

I BACK WINNERS I BACK NINTENDO

  12. Introduce on 2016, release on 2017… It could be the 3DS successor with Pokemon as a launch title… Instant money maker.

Are those chips low to mention a PSP successor? The Vita’s life to date is closer to 2016 than the 3DS or Wii U…

  13. Pingback: Nintendo New Game Console Coming With AMD Chip

  14. I feel like it’s too early for a successor to either the Wii U or the 3DS for this to get that, especially since the New 3DS hasn’t even come out in NA yet, which doesn’t make sense from a consumer loyalty standpoint to abandon that console a year after it comes out to introduce the next generation handheld. It’s very possible, given the wording of the AMD CFO, that one is a remaster of the Wii U that won’t be next-gen but an enhanced version like the New 3DS to the 3DS (New Wii U anyone? no? …okay.) The other one is probably the quality of life console since he said “at least one” chip will be for a video game console, meaning the other one might not be.

  15. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! NOT THAT APU-SHIT ON NINTENDO AS WELL?!?!?!?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! If the APU is for a handheld it’s going to be pretty awesome, but for a TV-console? Daaaaamnn… 720p 30FPS with low graphics all over the place! At leaste it should be cheap and power-saving…

  16. I really hope it isn’t a new Nintendo home console. As weak as the Wii U is, I bought one, and expect Nintendo to stick to it’s guns and deliver a full generation of content. If that doesn’t happen, Nintendo will have lost the trust of a previously dedicated customer.

  17. Can someone clarify this to me; If they are making a new game console doesn’t necessarely means that they are making games ALONG with the development? Or is it? I mean, If they wanna introduce a new game console soon, as in 2016, it must have games to be sold… Or they just wanna show it in 2016, right?

    1. I’ll agree with you on that. Nintendo will most likely introduce it in 2016 and then have it available for retail in 2017 which would fit in perfectly with Nintendo’s track record of their home console releases (they often release their home consoles 5 or 6 years after their predecessors)
