Sakurai Explains Why They Teamed Up With Bandai Namco For Super Smash Bros

Super Smash Bros producer Masahiro Sakurai has explained exactly why they decided to team up with Bandai Namco for the latest iteration of the Super Smash Bros franchise on the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U. Sakurai says that the decision with who to team up with was easy as Bandai Namco has plenty of experience making large-scale fighting games.

ND: These games were produced together with Bandai Namco Games, how did this happen to be?

MS: When we created Kid Icarus 3DS we assembled people from several places, but we experienced problems and had some regrets with that. I had to do interviews and other HR-duties, which amounts to a lot of time and work. Obviously, everyone has different levels of experience and different ways of working, so bringing everything together was difficult. To solve this problem we thought it would be better to have one single company work for us, so we choose to work with Bandai Namco Games who produce Tekken and other games. When thinking about a Japanese company that can make a large-scale fighting-game, there was only this one company. It would be quite difficult for other companies I think.

ND: Are you content with how the actual production went?

MS: I learned how to hold it in and not go to the toilet. It was quite far away from my seat (laughs).

ND: Please don’t do that! You actually had some health-concerns, right? We heard you couldn’t move your right hand anymore.

MS: Even now a tendonitis or something like that hasn’t healed yet, I for example use my left hand to move a trackball. Smash Brothers is always a extremely hard development-process. Thinking about it now, I was quite lucky not getting sick in the past. I took care of myself a little better this time and it kind of worked out.

Thanks, Sam

  1. I’m a bit disappointed with MyNintendoNews.com. How many stories can you make with one single interview. Now with Sakurai’s interview, the other day with NOA’s Fils-Aimé… One interview, 3 stories ! Is this a strategy to get higher Google ratings or more clicks ?

    1. Lol what do you want the headline to be? “Bowser Jr Was On The Brink Of Being Cut From Super Smash Bros, Sakurai Talks About The Inclusion Of Greninja In Super Smash Bros, and Sakurai Explains Why They Teamed Up With Bandai Namco For Super Smash Bros”?

  2. Now i know why capcom did not want to do the RE game for Wii U, they are made nintendo choose to give the money to bandai namco and not to them.

  3. It was a good choice. Also, it paved the way for Pac-Man to join the battle. He is an EXCELLENT addition. Love him.

  4. and even with his health he pulled it off, not his health cuz if he did pull of his health problems then the game would have launched sooner. anyways im glad they chose bandai-namco but why pac-man? aside from him being iconic, they could have chosen someone from the tales of series, female to lessen the sausage fest, or from tekken, again female and for the same reasons. not that i hate pac-man but still, whats done is done. hope he feels better and i noticed that sakurai look younger as he gets older, hard to believe is is in the mid 40’s, he looks like he is in his early 30’s.
