Kotaku Names Their Twelve Best Video Games Of 2014

Popular online publication Kotaku has listed the twelve video games this year that they feel are the cream of the crop. The choices may surprise some as there’s some lesser known titles on the list including Rusty’s Real Deal Baseball and Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc. Strangely they’ve forgotten to include the magnificent Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and Mario Kart 8, but thankfully both versions of Super Smash Bros made the cut. Here’s their games of 2014 in alphabetical order (these aren’t ranked).

  • Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc
  • Destiny
  • Divinity: Original Sin
  • Dragon Age Inquisition
  • Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft
  • Kentucky Route Zero Act III
  • The Last of Us: Left Behind
  • Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor
  • Rusty’s Real Deal Baseball
  • Super Smash Bros 3DS and Wii U
  • Threes!
  • Wolfenstein: The New Order

  1. aggh! that picture… Ahhghh! that list! XD lol seriously though are we sure this isn’t a poor attempt at putting 2014 games in alphabetical order?

      1. I got Need for Speed: Most Wanted as a gift over a year ago and it ran beautifully on the wii u. Virtually almost no frame rate drops were visible and the visuals were stunning; none of the game made me stop and wonder why it was half-assed.

Just goes to show how if EA (and other developers) actually maximized the wii u’s capabilities then it probably wouldn’t have such a shit rep.

Also, I find it a bigger dick slap to the face when devs make an ass wii u port than no game at all when using the “not enough install base” excuse, since they’re basically neglecting a platform which the cattle masses will see and automatically assume that the console is garbage and not worth investing in just because of that one game.

        1. And why you think I hate 3rd parties right now? Aside from BSing about Wii U’s hardware and install base, they also take advantage of the other two consoles filled with graphic drooling morons with half assed games, shittons of BS “remaster” ports because they got nothing else to offer and 2014 probably has the top record of the most broken games at launch; Halo, DriverClub, The Crew, Assassin’s Creed, COD: Advanced Warfare which had 3 fucking years of development and still no change but ended up with connection and framerate problems. Mean while on Nintendo’s side, the ONLY broken game they have is Sonic Boom but everyone except stupid ass delusional Sonic fanboys knew the game was gonna suck from its first reveal but looking at underrated gems like Bayonetta 2 which everyone got pointlessly butthurt because “Oh Nintendo is buying exclusives rights too and oh its not coming to PS/Xbox. I hate them” when truth is nobody else BUT Nintendo wanted to fund the sequel according to Platinum. But when Microsoft buys out Minecraft and Tomb Raider, I guess its not much of an issue anymore because those games best fit for all sides. See how 2014 proved the stupidity of the gaming community and market is?

          1. Shadow Of Mordor
            Far Cry 4
            DA Inquisition
            Dark Souls 2
            Danganronpa 2 Goodbye Despair
South Park The Stick of Truth
            Diablo III
            Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
            Wolfenstein The New Order
            Disgaea 4
Atelier Escha & Logy Alchemists of the Dusk Sky
            Sunset Overdrive
            Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc
World of Warcraft Warlords of Draenor

            1. While the other side gets fucked with incomplete overrated garbage and they happen to like it. Those same morons buying and excusing those sorry ass pitiful games are the Stockholm Syndrome of gaming. I rather have no crappy third party than having the same one who constantly disppointed stupid consumers with half assed efforts. Gaming as you know it is completely fucked with lazy, greedy and stupid ass people all around.

                    1. For which half of them I don’t know of and could potentially be as boring like when I bought Darksiders 2 and found out how fucking repetitive it is and one of them happens to be an Infamous ripoff so I wouldn’t count on that one. And what’s sad is that he failed to mention GTA5, the only best third party game I can think of. FarCry 4..you know I don’t give a fuck about Ubisoft anymore right?

                      1. 1: You could easily look them up. 2: How would you know? You’ve never played it.
                        3: GTA V is not from 2014.
                        4: Your loss.

      1. Unfortunately, it wasnt a game nobody expects nor wanted from Retro to begin with which is why it may have done poorly plus being delayed into a boring time of 2014. Hopefully now that 3D Metroid is needed, Retro will get back into the driverseat and make another kickass game that everybody wants.

        1. DKC:TF is a great game, but was released last in a long list of platformers. I’m glad Rainbow Curse isn’t that much of a platformer as with the Yoshi game, Wii U is leaning a tad too heavily on those. Platformers are great fun, but variety is the spice of life. This year is looking great in that regard.

            1. Every few years?

              In 2014 we had
              Shovel Knight
              Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition
              Rogue Legacy
              Murasaki Baby
Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris
              Skylanders Trap Team
              Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
              Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee – New ‘n’ Tasty
              Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
              Valiant Hearts: The Great War
              Dustforce
              LittleBigPlanet 3
              Kirby: Triple Deluxe
              Yoshi’s New Island

              1. Adfing to what you said:

And that’s not including about 80% of the Wii U 3DS indies on the eShop, they are all Platformers and about 70% of them are just trash.

      1. Mario Kart 8 is overrated. It wasn’t that good. In my opinion, it doesn’t deserve so many awards. (OPINION) *Holds up shield*

        1. The only issue I have with Mario Kart 8 is the coin item. Other than that, it’s fine. It’s my favorite Wii U game. And it’s much better than 7 imo.

        1. Yep that 10/10 for Galaxy 2 from Gamespot sure is bias
That 9.8 Editor’s Choice award from IGN sure is ignorant
That “yes” verdict from Kotaku for MK8, Smash, Pikmin 3, W101, BAYONETTA 2, sure is a joke
That Bravely Default Best Handheld Exclsuive from gameinformer sure shows their lack of caring

    1. DK Tropical Freeze is not one of the best games of 2014. That’s probably why it is not on any best of 2014 list.

    2. Darn, every list Kotaku has made top 10 this year it only has 1 Nintendo game, MK8 is for sure the best on that list, this list is a sham.

    3. IDK half of this fucking list while Destiny, $60 half-game DLC scam, making the cut is just purely stupid of them and Bayonetta 2 and even MK8 not making the list only proves this is BS.

    4. Bust my shit out laughing when I saw Destiny on this list and not Bayonetta 2.

To each their own, but look at what they do to their credibility when their taste in games go against the majority (I gots both games btw :L)

        1. Your absolutely right, apologies don’t really know why I fucked up with that context ^_^’

I guess what I meant to say is how it’s curious to see why a vg news site’s taste in games greatly differ from the non-casual gaming public. It’s just so polarizing, it almost seems like they created this list for the sake of being different from other gaming websites.
