We’ve found out today that the creative lead of the original Saints Row for the Xbox 360 was working with Nintendo to produce a game for the Wii U. However, the game was cancelled one day before production started. It’s unclear why the game was cancelled, but it sounds as though Nintendo wasn’t happy with it.

Nintendo SHOULD have allowed this to be released on the Wii U because even though the Saints Row series has had mixed opinions DOESN’T mean that this game wouldn’t have attracted a lot of attention.
From the sounds of things it might have actually been a Saints Row Wii U EXCLUSIVE… Why would you not want that?… That would have made people’s interest in the system grow even more and could actually help the Wii U catch up with the Xbox One and PS4…
Personally, I would have loved to see what game this guy was going to develop because though I’m more into the first three games rather than 4 or Gat out of Hell, doesn’t mean I didn’t find them fun the play, just didn’t like how they changed the story from serious street drama to over the top comedy.

Nintendo is like WWE in wrestling. WWE/Nintendo caters to the kid fanbase. Yeah they have adult fans who want stuff different and for them to go into a different direction but WWE/Nintendo doesn’t listen and is still in a steady slope in terms of money. Sure WWE is still on top of the whole wrestling brand but views won’t increase to the way it was in the past same way Nintendo won’t get the same sucess they have had in the past.

In fairness, the Saints Row games have not been that reliable in terms of quality but that’s not to say that they have been terrible either. I personally don’t think that the cancelled project would’ve sold well anyway because Saints Row isn’t as popular as some would want to think. Nintendo has invested in adult themed exclusives with titles like ZombiU, Bayonetta 2, Ironfall: Invasion and the upcoming Devil’s Third so I wouldn’t say that Nintendo is only catering to children, that’s just the general perception of Nintendo because of majority of their games have cartoony art styles
Nintendo also invested in Conker’s Bad Fur Day (not really mature), Eternal Darkness, & several Fatal Frame games.
But yeah, I wish there were more mature titles on Wii U. But who’s making the MadWorlds, Killer7s, Tenchus, House of the Deads, Prince of Persias, Beyond Good & Evils (T-rated, but mature), & real Survival Horror anymore? Even RPGs like Shin Megami Tensei are mostly handheld nowadays, most RPGs are, which compounds the issue about Wii U’s comparatively poor sales. & how many pure or cinematic games are there compared to interactive movies & the ever increasing trend? That’s not Nintendo or really gaming.
Alas, there are no more heroes. Perhaps if Wii U could generate better sales, & paying customers proved there was a market for more games like ZombiU, Bayonetta, & Devil’s Third, publishers might invest in releasing mature games on Wii U. But even if they had better marketing, a lot would depend on flashy hype rather than actual content. Still, I’m disappointed Nintendo neglected to get the ball rolling by neglecting Shadow of the Eternals & refusing a global, simultaneous (or more agressive) release for the Ninty exclusive Fatal Frame games. @ least the PS2/Xbox port of Fatal Frame II on Wii could’ve been a good test of the waters. But GCN’s RE boom & games like Killer7 & MGS: TTS (talk about “either sh** or get off the pot”), only carried over to Wii. Consoles that were easy to develop for & alleviated the pressures & pitfalls of chasing hardcore audiovisuals were largely ignored by 3rd parties who’re too power-drunk & chasing their own tails to do anything substantial, especially if it’s not for MicroSony. Such a shame that a SEGA console, even 3rd party support, is no longer an option; they were the bridge between Nintendo & pre-7th gen Sony, devving & getting plenty of mature games. C’est la vie.

Coming from a lead designer of Saints Row 1 when the series was actually good? That’s a mistake Nintendo is gonna pay for soon and no, IDC about Zelda being their only open world game. I just love to see people discuss issues without knowing all the facts. The game could have been in a terrible state. Resources for the game could have been used up. Just because a little bit of information is told, people jump to conclusions. Also, reason cancelled could have been mutal.
Doubtful. If a game is cancelled the day before production, it’s not going to be because of the developers. And if it was because it was unfinished or glitchy, more that likely it would have just been delayed. I doubt it was from a lack of resources too because Nintendo is notorious for carrying third party titles to the finish line. That narrows it down to Nintendo themsleves cancelling the game after they witnessed the final product. More than likely a giant purple dildo. There is really no other explanation.

I don’t hate on Nintendo, but I do think they should not be so censored at times. Over half of their user base are adults, but they still cater towards the younger audience 99% of the time. The truth is we don’t know what this game is, or how bad or good it was so there’s not enough argument to say if it should’ve been released or not, for all we know it could’ve been a bugged mess, or it could’ve been nintendo having a stick up their ass about the content in the game like the binding of isaac, or hell they could’ve had problems with production or something. we don’t know, I personally enjoy the saints row games so it’s a bit disapointing to see a game the lead creator was workin on get cancelled especially for the wii U which needs all the help it can get. but as said i’m not passing judgement.

For the most part, I agree, chris: any medium is an escape. Even if it’s a reflection of who you might be, what matters is how you act in the real-world.
But, I do believe children (& some adults) are impressionable. The ratings system should be enforced, & parents should understand the content of a game/movie/etc., & should know their child. Sadly, the price of freedom is sometimes pretty high. However I think there are lines that shouldn’t be crossed, ones that can be dangerous. While I’m not a fan of GTA or Saint’s Row, I respect those fans who just wanna play devil’s advocate &/or goof around in a fantasy w/ out the real-world consequences. When I was well-under 17, my parents bought me M-rated games, let me watch R-rated movies, & let me listen to explicit lyrics, understanding enough of the content beforehand. I was also pretty honest about what I wanted. I think my moral compass still points in the right direction.
Also, it could be argued that M-rated games (or whatever) are preventative. I’d rather the brutality that occurred, say, in Roman coliseums be virtual than actual. We all have a dark side, & I’m glad we can vent that w/ out actually succumbing. Hopefully, we even learn why certain behaviors are to be avoided in tje real world.

Honestly, we don’t know what happened with this game, so I think it’s ridiculous to say either way, it could’ve been a broken mess. Shame it was’nt released though.
And about the platfrom thing, honestly I think it’s just bias and a bit of nintendo stupidity, them first few months were crucial and they did horribly and the third partys did horribly too backing out after one bad or even mediocore sales for a game(even good in zombiu’s case but…ubisoft).
Ninty have an unfair upwards battle because producers only want to create games that are going to be safe due to high production costs, the wii U is like going into the deep end of the pool for them, so we get them dippin their toes in with crappy ports and the like to see if they’ll sell and then them runnin off when they obviously don’t sell, then you have producers who make ridiculous claims which unintentionally damage the console such as re revelations 2 not running on it…despite running on the 360 and ps3.
If nintendo want to win them back then I think the only good way is to beat them at their own game, get a few companys get them to make “mature” high quality games, sort out their fuckin advertising and people will come back, it’s a shame as well because anyone who actually owns a wii U can tell you it’s a bloody amazing console and is probbly better value then the other two atm.
And honestly it has nothing to do with the power of the console, maybe in 3-4 years but if ninty can make pikmin look as amazing as it does and half the shit we are seeing on the other consoles can be ported to 360 and ps3, there’s no excuse from a technical standpoint.
There is an excuse from the technical standpoint. People buy more powerful consoles for graphics in the first place and why would 3rd parties make games for the Wii U when it doesn’t have the numbers of the last gen systems, nor the power of the current gen? Of course it does have to do with power? How can they make a game look as good as it could’ve on the 10 times more powerful machines? There is no way. You can say optimization, but really, that doesn’t do wonders. It’s like saying that the X360 will in 5-6 years be able to produce graphics like the X1.
But the thing is, people are already complaining about the price(ridiculously)
and really there is not as much of a difference as last gen, last gen it was a fuckin big problem due to HD and disk sizes, there was no way to fit some of those games onto the wii especially considering the lack of buttons as well which led to ridiculous waggling when it was unneccesary.
As I said maybe in 3-4 years it could be a problem but so far we are a year or two into the new consoles and graphically the wii U has not been left in the dust nor have the last consoles tbh, not to mention there’s not been as big of a jump at all this gen, alot of the best lookin games still compare to the last of us on ps3 and honestly the best lookin one i’ve seen so far has either been alien isolation or pikmin ironically so saying 10 times more powerful is a massive overstatement, they are more powerful yes but not enough to make a huge difference.
Oh and I do understand why they don’t release on the console, I find it insulting when they make excuses rather then the truth(which the excuses hurt the console more then just saying they don’t believe it will sell), it’s the exact same reason we have’nt seen that much risk in terms of games, zombiu was a great starting point for a franchise but because it did’nt sell big(and it sold well considering the console and how small the survival horror genre was then), ubi scrapped it.

So nintendo needs to beat them at their own game, there’s less and less exclusives now so they need to have someone make mature titles for them, not crappy rushed ones but some with actual subsistance like gears of war or halo, they’ve already said they are open to buying out companys so they’re already on the right track.
Well, in the end it all is Nintendo’s problem. They are the ones fucking up constantly. Wii U’s gamepad was just made to get them the casual audience. Watch the commercials, they are the best place to see that. They should remove it. It’s obviously not nearly as utilized as it should to be considered a good reason to trade the power and the 3rd party support. That is why people complain about the price. The thing costs around 100$ to produce, yet it’s pretty much a gimmick, save for a couple of games that use it like Nintendo Land. It’s close to PS4’s price, yet it lacks so much in comparison. Remove the gamepad, cut a 100$ from the existing price and the sales will skyrocket, but Nintendo doesn’t want to do shit. Hell, the console lacks so many features and there are so many games that have multiplayer, yet lack online. People see Nintendo as a company for kids for more reasons than just the lack of mature titles. Also companies don’t have feelings nor emotions. They do what they do for money. If Nintendo gave them a good reason to make games for them, they would, but since Wii U is nor here nor there, no one is going to be buying 3rd party games for it. No numbers, no next gen graphics.
i’m gonna have to disagree with you on the gamepad, if you’ve played zombiu you know what that thing is capable off, and it’s a creative idea, if company’s were’nt taking risks like that then the oculus rift would’nt exist, nor would the DS. They don’t need to shove the gamepad into every game to make it worthwhile.
the advertising was them trying to get the wii crowd again most likely, though they went about it horribly, marketing barring e3 and directs, and how they’ve treated their fans recently in the LP’s and the like are massive problems I think they have, and it makes me believe that nintendo is run Half by genius’s and half by mentally handicapped chimpanzees, plus I think nintendo’s stubborness is both a gift and a curse at times.
The main things the console lacks from a ps3 or xbone are things ninty could add into the current console such as party chat and a unified account system and as I said i’ve yet to see any damning evidence that the wii U is as weak as people make out, and nintendo can’t give them a good reason to develop for them because as said it’s too much of a risk. it’s an upwards battle, they don’t need to copy everything so as to lose their identity as a company and lose out on ideas like the gamepad(which I hope sticks around for future consoles) but they do need to stop being so stubborn and atleast copy some of the competitors ideas and try to beat them at their own game.

Yes it’s nintendo’s problem but i’m just pointing out that building a more powerful console is not gonna cut it, especially at this point in which abandoing the wii U would be corporate suicide.
You can’t tell me that the gamepad was what made Zombie U enjoyable for you and that without it, it would’ve been a much lesser game. Gamepad, a controller that costs that much, needs to be something that is there for everything. Not for maps and inventories. Oh, what an incredible usage of such a thing. DS was a console that was made that way to appeal more to casuals, but to still have that second screen. It’s one console and pretty much all games used it, and 90% of the games couldn’t have existed without it. Oculus rift isn’t even comparable. It’s a VR device, not a controller that raises the price of the console by a lot, yet is not used for almost anything.
Yeah the gamepad added so much more to it, same with rayman which i’m stunned people can play on other consoles without it, the fact that you had to look down at the inventory added to the suspense and caution in zombiu, and the scanner was also awesome in the same way it could’ve been in something like an alien game, both of these were made to enhance the game in a good way, the sniper scope was cool as well but less creative, i’ll admit nintendo themselves could be doing a better job at using the gamepad but they seem to be doing so alot more now with the games that have been announced.
And my point with the vr was that it is another idea that’s creative and trying something different. I think it’s a good thing that nintendo are running around with ideas like this, and unlike the wii there’s enough buttons on the gamepad to make it not a problem if there’s no good reason to use it in a game unlike the wii with all the unneeded waggling even in some nintendo made games.
And lets be serious here do you think that if nintendo was just to make a overpowered console that it’d solve all their problems? there’s alot of brand loyalty involved as well in other companys and they are’nt going to buy mario suddenly for a few more polygons, hell people would probbly deny the consoles power, the wii u was pretty much already labeled as underpowered before it was even released and for all we knew the thing could’ve been on par with the ps4.
The wii U is not as expensive as you make out and they’ve already lowered the price once already and getting rid of the gamepad would just confuse things more then they already are(though I admit they are on the pricey side, and they need to figure out a way to lower the price and allow people to buy more).
I’m not trying to defend all of nintendo’s choices here, they’ve made some incredibly dumb decisions recently especially in marketing, and the wii U had an awful launch(if I did’nt love zombiu so much I damn well would’ve left buyin it longer then I did.) i’m just trying to get across that I think the situation is alot more harder then, underprice the wii U or make a new console altogether as alot of people are saying.
People want games and publishers want proof that it’s safe to build on a console, if they can’t entice the third partys back to help them, they they’re just gonna have to do so themselves, if they were to get a good team together I think they could most certainly pull of a “mature” title that’d look graphically amazing and play amazingly, they’ve already said they are open to aquiring studio’s so I already can see something like this happening hopefully.

Great, I didn’t like that in Zombie U. It was more a gimmick than something that makes the game interesting for me. It was possible without the gamepad. Click L and then you have the option to look around while in inventory. When you let go of it, the character again looks in the inventory. It was possible, you just need a brain to conclude that much. Rayman, Mario Bros U and 3D Land shit could’ve been done with a Wii remote pointing at the TV. Well, the Wii was a fuck up, Gamecube as well, N64 as well. Nintendo always made fuck ups in terms of designing their consoles and then their fanboys wonder why there is no 3rd party support. Getting rid of the gamepad would make things even more difficult? Well, when you are on the bottom, there is only one way to go. Nintendo is fucking up on every compass point and is going to continue so, but look at these fanatics just defending all of that bullshit.

Bayonetta 2 (not Bayonetta 1) is actually fully published by Nintendo, as was Conker. They are also working on Devil’s third as support developer and publisher. Also, there was going to be a Saint’s Row 3DS game before THQ cancelled it because the 3DS was having low sales in its first summer.

Make no mistake, while Bayonetta has a lot of suggestive themes in it, Nintendo isn’t about to let a game like GTA or Saints Row be released on their system. They allow suggestive themes but not sexual assault.

That would have been a good game for the wii u because the wii u lacks open world games. They only have a select few which is Watch Dogs, Amazing spiderman 1 and 2, batman arkham city and origins, and the lego games. That’s about it.
Lego City Undercover is by far my only favorite open world game on Wii U at the moment but I heard that Xenoblade Chronicles X is actually a good open world game.

Stepping away from being a GTA clone benefits the series (Gat Out of Hell was an expansion pack so that’s excluded) Just because it was being done by the creative lead and is an “open world game” doesn’t make it relate to Saints Row. I prefer a compilation of The Third onwards as this is were the story of the series really picks up

At first all i saw was Saints Row and Wii U. Obviously this is because of the sales not sone disagreements with Nintendo or some bullshit like hardware when i play SR the Third and 4 on PS3 and they were fantastic. Too bad Nintendo didn’t demand Namco include unlockable characters (à la Tekken 3), & a more robust single-player experience w/ a real Story Mode. I would’ve also loved to play a new Tekken Force mode. & too bad its a spin-off.
But Namco also messed up Tekken 3D. Meanwhile, Street Fighter IV 3D (even if all characters were already unlocked), & DoA: Dimensions were great.
I wish console Fighters were like they used to be. Online roster-parity & DLC K.O.’d the fun for me. Fighters might not be my top genre, but I did have fun in the past.
