Nintendo Is Still Against Releasing A New Iteration Of An Exisiting Series Every Year

A lot of video game franchises these days are currently annual such as Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime says that the company is still against this tradition. For instance Fils-Aime says with something like Mario Kart there will only be one entry for the Wii U and the next game would be on future hardware. Reggie also hopes that the video games we are playing today on our Wii U console’s will be cherished into the future.

The company won’t overuse its old games, though, Fils-Aime said. Nintendo won’t follow in the same steps of games like Call of Duty, releasing a new iteration every year, he said. “We put out one Mario Kart per platform per generation.”

That strategy has led many Nintendo fans to hold on to their decades-old game consoles to replay their favorites. What’s unclear is whether the Wii U will be as equally loved decades from now.

“We certainly hope so,” Fils-Aime said. “And in the end it’s going to be placed on our ability to have these unique compelling experiences that stand up to time.”

    1. Exactly (although their little run with Pokemon begs to differ). Releasing a game from the same franchise every year kills it. It’s good that they don’t do it.

That’s what happened to games that started out great, like Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty. Those were good games to start out with and they did have gaps between releases. But then the publishers got greedy. The year after year deal really destroyed the creative process. The series are stagnant and tiresome. There’s nothing fresh, original, or exciting about them anymore.

      1. Wasn’t frequent releases what kissed the Guitar Hero franchise, but on a much bigger scale of releases, as in like 6 or 7 in asingle year…

    2. Shots fired(in a friendly way,) at companies like E.A with a yearly Fifa game and Activition with a yearly Call of Duty game. I like this take time to perfect the game mentality of Nintendo. Keep doing what your doing Nintendo…

      1. I think Fifa can maybe get a pass, but I think thay should make fifa a downloadable title that gets updated yearly and have it so that you pay like 10$/20$ for a year of play….of course I’m talking from buissnes POV not a gamer’s POV

    1. Yes, and Game Freaks has just perfectly shown that it is not bound to Nintendo in any kind, by skipping their platforms for their new game…

    2. Pokemon has been almost entirely annual in Europe and NA since the very first entry of the series, with Ruby/Sapphire, Diamond/Pearl and Platinum being the only exceptions (each of them came out 2 years after their predecessors). In Europe, Gold/Silver and Crystal even came out in the same year, with only 7 months inbetween.

        1. Doesn’t change the fact of the series being annual.
The person I originally replied to said it was annual only since 2009, and I made a small correction to that statement; whether or not the game is developed by Nintendo wasn’t relevant to what I said. :)

  1. I honestly think Reggie is right about the Wii U being loved decades from now. I think the games the Wii U has are amazing and that they’ll become instant classics later in the future. This is seriously something I can’t say about the PS4 or Xbox One’s library of games.

    1. You really couldn’t say that about the Wii U’s first year either. It takes time for each console to pick up. Never expect amazing experiences within the first 3 years, but treasure the ones you do get.

      1. Yes, but Nintendo totally abandoned it’s own hardware. They addmitted being ill preparred for HD programming, and took a huge misstep as they entered the HD era. Late and unprepared really hurt the WiiU.

  2. The Wii U will certainly be fondly remembered by me in the future. I love it. MK8 is the best MK. Mario 3D World is probably the best 3D Mario Kart game. Pikmin 3 is the best Pikmin. Bayonetta 2 is beyond belief. I could go on. For me it’s catalogue has already trumped the Wii. I’m loving gaming on WiiU almost as much as the GC days.

      1. Yup, Wii U is basically a GameCube 2 more than a Wii 2 that Nintendo relentlessly tries to show us. It will be a niche console with low sales but will be loved by their few owners. I love my Wii U, btw :)

  3. “The company won’t overuse its old games, though”, Fils-Aime said. He went on to say: “For instance, take a look at F-Zero, Star Fox, Golden Sun, Sin and Punishment, and Metroid. We keep these franchises fresh and stored in our HQs in Tokyo and Kyoto, and utilize them every decade or so.”

      1. No, he did not. I’m sorry you did not get my irony. :(

I made that joke because it is frustrating how Nintendo is not smart enough to revive beloved franchises such as those I mentioned.

        1. I have faith that we’ll get an F-Zero. We all want it so damn bad after all. It would be hard to believe that Nindendo hasn’t taken notice.

          1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

F-Zero might be getting the Metroid treatment where it skips an entire console. xD So far, so good.

    1. “This year I made a bet with the Janitor over at the HQ to see how long we could keep F-Zero out of site lol. He’s gonna be paying up for the next 20 before he knows it!”

      1. LOL :)

F-Zero is a lost cause. Miyamoto more or less has said that there is not a strong reason to prepare another intallment since they cannot bring any novelty to the series. Seems that Nintendo does not care about F-Zero anymore.

        1. That old coot Miyamoto does not want to make a new F-Zero simply because not! He believes Pikmin, a failed franchise from de GCN era, has more future than a new F-Zero game that fans are asking for since the Wii era.

          Miyamoto is ruining Nintendo.

        2. I wonder if a lot of people downloading the SNES version of F-Zero from the eShop would make Nintendo take seriously the possibility of developing a new installment in the series.

  4. Came here to say Pokémon but everyone else already said it. For awhile I thought New Super Mario Bros would become one though. Glad it didn’t!

    1. NSMB is a once-per-console type of thing, but release schedule for the 3DS installment and the WiiU installment and the Luigi DLC made it seem like a yearly release, lol.

  5. My Wind Waker Is Bigger (I.A.B.A.B)

You can only release some games annually. Games like Pokemon are starting to wear out, because it’s being fucking released to much. Games like Zelda need a release maybe every two or three years. Now a game like splatoon and F-Zero could possibly get away with being released annually.

    1. Nope, Zelda doesnt need 2 to 3 years of difference, you wanna decrease the time? Ok, you would get worse quality games. Unless you are counting non main console Zelda games.

      1. My Wind Waker Is Bigger (I.A.B.A.B)

The handheld Zelda titles. The console Zelda needs more than 2 to 3 years of development.

    1. Level-5 is an indie studio (by technicality, though they are a pretty big studio) that self publishes their own games in Japan but gets help from Nintendo for overseas distribution. None of their games are considered Nintendo IPs nor are they obligated to develop exclusively for Nintendo (they work with PlayStation often), similarly to GameFreak.

  6. I seen some article talking about how nintendo rehashes or something from IGN I think. I bet he doesn’t talk like that about his precious Assassins creed or call of booty.

    1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Sadly, people still have the gall to call Nintendo games rehashes but completely ignore the fact there are more rehashes from 3rd parties than Nintendo.

    1. It’s still a Nintendo exclusive. Let Ratchet and Clank be a yearly franchise and people would still say it’s Sony milking even though it’s made by Insomniac

      1. Except Pokemon doesn’t really release each year, generations often take 2-3 years to develop, and anything in between are visibly marketed as either remakes or expansions, not recolors masquerading as all new games.

  7. Hey guys and girls! Would love for you all to check out my own Nintendo music karaoke video for you all to sing along and share of course! :D It’s a bit of a laugh so don’t take it too serious of course! :D

  8. i love the wiiu it’s one of my favorite nintendo consoles if they release some more turned based rpgs from square Enix and otjer companies and games I loves so much on the wii like chocobos dungeon and donkapon kingdom I can see it surpassing the wii and maybe the gamecube the wiiu in my opinion is almost exactly like the gamecube but getting better I hope Disney adds some good starwars games like unleashed and rogue squadron it will be even better than the gc and wii we got wind waker hd it’s almost like the return of the GC!

  9. A big Pokemon game for the home console would be nice though, Pokken would be a good start, then you have Stadium/Colosseum and Snap games too, but a real, big open world, open region Pokemon game would be just too incredible.

    1. They pretty much explained why something like that would never work out on home consoles, and why they only have spin-off titles.
I actually feel the main Pokemon titles are fine as is being handheld exclusive.
Definitely don’t want that Double Smash Bros. fiasco which could have easily been avoided.

      1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Sadly, that’s just Game Freak refusing to take a risk with an established franchise. After all, it took them nearly 10 years to upgrade from sprites to 3D models. Maybe if they would slow down with a third game in a Pokemon generation & a remake coming out between new generations of Pokemon, then maybe they can make a Pokemon game like that work on a home console. In fact, the Pokemon series could do with a 5-10 year rest while they spend that time working on a massive home console game. It doesn’t even have to be a new generation of Pokemon but on a home console (if they are not keen on moving a main Pokemon game to a Nintendo home console since they want it to be mainly a handheld series) as they can take an additional 2-3 years to make a new generation of Pokemon games for the handhelds to be released alongside the home console Pokemon game. I, for one, would be thankful for such a break from the franchise as I nearly stopped playing Pokemon during it’s 5th generation. In fact, at this point, I only play Pokemon to collect the ones I don’t have, finish the story, & then wait for the next game. Barely, if ever, do I play the Pokemon game again. And since I have every Pokemon up to this point that I can catch in the games themselves, I really don’t feel like continuing with the games of Pokemon I do have. (Not into the competitive scene of Pokemon.)

    1. 1.-Pokemon is a second party property, as Nintendo only owns a third of the rights to it.
2.-Pokemon is not managed in iterations but rather in generations, and each generation usually takes around three years to develop, even if each tends to consist of a main game, a sequel and a remake.

      1. 1. There is no such thing as a second party game. In reality, the resulting game is first party (since it is funded by the platform holder who usually owns the resulting IP or in this case a large part of it), but the term helps to distinguish independent studios from those directly owned by the platform holder

        2. The doesn’t change the fact that they are main series games. Remake or not

  10. And this is what separates Nintendo from the other companies. It’s not just about money to them. Of course, they need money, so they want to sell you things and they do things to get money. But, in the end, to Nintendo, it’s about the games. That’s why I respect them. They’re one of the very few honest major game companies left in the world.

  11. Completely agree, but we do still get games from each franchise every year. I know the Super Mario franchise has like 4 games a year at the least. Pokemon is also pretty much annual, and you can tell as Pokemin quality has declined quite a bit. Nonetheless I prefer things this way. I don’t want 2 MK per system or even 2 LoZs, but at the same time that doesn’t give Nintendo the excuse for game droughts. They need more third parties, revival of old IPs, as well as new IPs like Splatoon. I know for sure there are at least 10 Nintendo-owned IPs that haven’t received a new game in a while.

    1. You must be drunk or never played Pokemon X/Y, it is sooo good, so many new adds and graphics overall way nicer. The fact you can train your Pokemon with other ways and make it more powerful not only by doing battles and such, is something new and gives the series a new life.

      1. I’m too young to drink, and I have played every gen of pokemon since Red and Blue with an exception of Yellow. Quality can mean a variety of things. Yes X/Y and 0RAS have awesome features, but it’s also missing things. It may be because Pokemon has been released so much that it’s losing it’s charm. I will still buy every Pokemon game that comes out, but I’ll be surprised if it makes me feel like gens 1-4 did. This is my opinion in no way do you have to agree with it, because every gamer is different.

          1. Maybe it’s like the COD syndrome? . But like I said every game has their pros and cons, there may be a missing element, but it may make it up in another area. Gen 4 was my absolute favorite despite the bad pokemon everyone said it included, contests, underground digging, hidden secrets, challenging (although not as much as the gens before), replayable trainers, etc.. Gen 5 comes along and takes out all of my favorite elements, but things such as triple and rotation battles make up for it although not as much. Basically every gen comes with it’s pros and cons, but it’s mostly a single element of a new installment that will be the buy factor for me, especially since I use the same team for practically every game. As far as the games losing their charm I believe it has to do with the games becoming easier, completing the Pokedex is just about impossible without hacks or outrageous trades, and that the pokemon are becoming unoriginal. Lamps, keys, perfume sprits, cupcakes, etc, not to mention you can count on your standard bug, bird, and annoying fish pokemon in each game. Don’t get me wrong I love Pokemon and Nintendo, and it’s the little elements they add in and a handful of cute pokemon that’ll make me buy each new game, but Pokemon is nothing new.

            1. So in other words, you’re a sucker for Pokemon. Nintendo saps the money right out of you with every new game!

                1. Pokemon is awesome, but to me, the games are way too similar. Although ORAS was a remake, it was like playing through Pokemon X again. That was the reason I had avoided playing Pokemon games before. They aren’t different enough. And like you said, it’s impossible to complete the Pokedex. And Gamefreak likes to troll people with EVENT Pokemon. Making a certain Pokemon obtainable only for a certain amount of time and then never doing it again until they feel like it.

                  1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

FUCKING EVENT ONLY POKEMON!!! *cries* I just need 3 of gen 4’s event legendaries, 3 of gen 5’s event legendaries, & 1 (technically 2) of gen 6’s event legendaries and the circle will be complete! *says that last part in Darth Vader’s voice*

            2. So you love video games, you’re not old enough to drink, you love Pokemon, Gen 4 of the Pokemon series is your favorite, and you’re a girl. JUST MY TYPE!!! We should go out sometime!

              1. I thought this was a gaming site not a dating site. And I’m a year older btw assuming you were born in 1999. :P

                  1. Not until the end of the year, but I was born in 1998 so he’s probably only a couple months behind. We’re probably in the same grade though due to the weird bday thing American school systems have.

              2. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Because we’re addicted to collecting every single Pokemon there is, whether we like them or not! I dislike Jynx, for instance, but that ugly bitch (lol) is in my Pokemon Bank none the less!

      2. I can’t disagree there, but I blame consumers for the most part. They continually keep buying this crap, so companies annually provide it for them. As long as it keeps selling the way it does, they won’t ever see a reason to stop, or make any big improvements to these games they do release so often.

If people weren’t such followers or just suckers in general, I don’t think this would ever be a tradition.

This is one of those topics that reach much further than the gaming industry unfortunately. Many don’t think for themselves or at all for that matter. So it is easy to see why so many companies take advantage of this.

Easy money, less effort. If the pigs don’t complain about the slop, why change it all that much?

      3. Thank you, Nintendo. I am against it since it affects the quality of a series. One thing that I hate it about Activision is how much they milked the Call of Duty franchise.

      4. I don’t mind if they don’t release a game every year in the same series. But, it does SUCK that there’s only going to be this one Mario Kart for the Wii U. It’s almost as if, I’ve been there, done that already. Nothing else to look forward to until the successor to the Wii U releases. Except Zelda of course. I wish there was at LEAST two of each game in a series on each console. Like how we got 2 Super Mario Galaxies on the Wii, and 2 Zeldas on the N64.

      5. Guys, they’ve been doing the exact same thing with the NSMB series.

        – NSMB for the DS.
        – NSMBW for the Wii.
        – NSMB2 for the 3DS.
        – NSMBU for the Wii U.

      6. Id like to see perhaps a yearly update with DLC for these key titles, four more courses for mario kart 8 each year for example and some added functionality or mode perhaps. After all, lots of these yearly franchise updates are barely that, new level packs .

      7. They could instead keep expanding upon the game by adding new things. For Mario Kart they could keep adding new characters, kart parts and tracks/grand prix. Smash they could work on new characters and stages. They really need to take advantage of DLC, then there’s really not much need for another iteration but it still gives new things.

        1. Especially since they have characters they didn’t use from previous Mario Kart and Smash titles as well as stages from both that could be reused and updated. I know a lot of us fans appreciate those older stages and courses.

      8. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Thanks to DLC, some of these franchises don’t even need to be an annual release as they can just release new stuff to them to prolong their life til the next generation comes out & they release a new game in the franchise. (A damn shame Activision, EA, etc don’t do this. But as Michelle said, as long as the pigs keep eating, why change the way they make the slop?)
