Super Smash Bros Director Sakurai Calls DLC These Days A Scam

Some DLC is well worth your money like the Mario Kart 8 downloadable content and some simply is not. Super Smash Bros creator Masahiro Sakurai isn’t happy about the current downloadable content that we are peddled as he says developers are actually providing us with an unfinished product at launch. Sakurai feels that the product delivered to us at launch should be 100% complete and shouldn’t require us giving additional cash post launch.

These days, the “DLC scam” has become quite the epidemic, charging customers extra money to complete what was essentially an unfinished product. I completely understand how aggravated players must feel. After all, a game should be 100% at the time of release, and I would be livid if it were split up and sold in pieces.

Why, then, do you think so many titles provide premium DLC on or shortly following a game’s release? It’s because that’s the easiest way to make money.

After all, if you wait too long after a game’s release to distribute additional content, players will already move on to the next title. Even long tail titles–that is, ones that perform consistently well over an extended period of time–make more money the earlier they come out.

Moreover, we decided to release other characters as well because part of the fun of Smash is the anticipation: “Which character will join the fray next!?” If we keep distributing content, we can maintain that excitement, and I think that’s a really great thing.

Thanks, anon

    1. 3rd party needs to be more like Nintendo or valve, look at cgo so many new maps all for free, in tf2 the only thing that cost money is some hat. new luigi u game is essentially a different game so the price was acceptable. 4 maps for 15 is not fair, at best, it should be $5

      1. I still choose to buy the passes in CS:GO even though the maps accompanying them are technically free. Mine as well support the people making the maps while getting more money back from skins received from missions than I actually payed for the pass xD…

      2. CSGO Does DLC right, all the content is actually free the only thing that isn’t free is additional stuff that CAN make you money over time (Good Luck though).

      3. Yes, except you get 4 maps, 3 new racers, and 3 new bikes/carts to use. That’s well worth the 15$ price.

    2. Well looking at the HALVE $60 Destiny with Paywall and Annually spammed COD 10.5 with the same rehashed design and map packs for another $60 EACH, he’s not wrong or stupid. You people are and have been doped for YEARS.

    3. Nope, basically this proves that nintendo fans are so hipocrytes.
I agree lucas arrived late and he should be a dlc but 4€ or 5€ (for one version or two respectively) is NOT a good price… And mewtwo was announce just before the game released which is a pain in the ass.
The only dlc i will still supporting is mk8’s dlc because they are cheap, they give us a lot of content and they get announce much later in the game life.
Sorry im not a native english speaker so i might have express myself incorrectly.

      1. Hypocrite this, fighting games usually charge 5€ for additional fighter.
And most of those games do not have +30 fighters to initially choose from.
Check out DoA 5 for some real retarded DLC deals.
Though making and balancing these fighters requires a lot more work, than just slapping couple of CoD maps in a bundle and selling it for 15€.

      2. Okay, dude, read this article and tell me if you still think what you said is reasonable: http://kotaku.com/5986592/it-will-blow-your-mind-to-see-how-much-it-costs-to-add-one-new-character-to-a-fighting-game

First thing, developers aren’t going to work on post game DLC for free, and Mewtwo was announced when that DLC was still in development a while after the 3DS release. Some got it for free registering both the Wii U and 3DS games (which shouldn’t bother anyone as both are great games). Unless you wanted the game be delayed longer until 2015 in Q1 or Q2, I don’t believe they did anything wrong.

  1. 100% on point as expected of the lord of the internet trolls Sakurai. DLC on 99% of games these days is a scam and as of today you even have to pay for MODS for games like Skyrim. Mods are now cheaply made paid DLC. SMFH

    1. Correction on that statement, you pay for mods that are ON STEAM (there are still free mods, but still). All of those mods are on Nexus or some other site 100% free, so yeah… kinda weird if ya ask me

  2. He’s absolutely right. DLC used to be implemented into games that were already 100 percent complete. Now, as Sakurai said, it’s nothing but a scam. Developers can charge consumers $60.00 for a half-baked game, turn around a month later, and then charge another $10-20 on content that should have been there since launch.
Nintendo screws up on a lot of things, and they are a little behind the times *cough* Splatoon *cough* but it’s a breath of fresh air seeing them release DLC for games that are already fully completed. Just like the good ol’ days.

    1. No, Splatoon was clearly planned. They could have out the extra content in the game, but they like the concept of easy money. All this damage controlling is making Nintendo happy though =)

              1. Yeah… so what if it’ll have DLC?
It’s not like they’re going to give us an unfinished game (voice chat doesn’t count). DLC development will mot likely start after the release of the game (just like smash and Mario Kart)

                    1. Spoiler Alert! Metroid Prime U will not be coming out as the next Metroid will be for the NX! The Wii U isn’t getting a Metroid game as the console is really being deserted for greater pastures.

              2. im pretty damn sure the DLC wont be over priced. it will be just as fair as it is with smash and mario kart 8. DLC is not bad. the devs who abuse it are.

                1. 4€ (3,99€) is not a good deal for a single character… In marvel vs capcom you could have 3 for 5€ do your maths…
Dont be so hipocrytes they did the mk8 dlc absolutely right, we support them because it was amazing! Ot provided us a lot of content for a fair price but with smash bros they have go to the easy way out overprice dlcs…

              3. AS long as they offer a complete product on launch, I don´t see a problem with future DLCs for Splatoon, they´re doing the same they did with Mario Kart 8 and Smash: two complete products at launch that got some new content later but can be perfectly enjoyed withou them.

      1. Planned DLC doesn’t bother me so long as the game that comes out at launch feels like a complete game, and for splatoon’s case I guess that would means have a satisfying amount of content in terms of maps/weapons/gear/modes. If they have enough of those to make the game feel fresh and fun for a few months until the DLC is done and rolls around then that’s good.

Already prepared DLC on the other hand is quite underhanded. And splatoon already has that in the form of amiibo’s really. needing to pay extra money to buy figurines to unlock content in the game is so lame.

        1. Yes, but then that logic can be applied to almost any video game title. Even Destiny. The game still feel complete from a consumer’s stand point as you will still be investing quite a lot of time on it.

          1. I actually haven’t played Destiny, and I know little about it or it’s DLC, so I don’t think I can fully understand or appreciate the point your trying to make, is there another example you can think of?

            1. Well, that was the big one. I haven’t played many games that had controversial DLC packages so I can’t really think of any others at the moment. I think people were mad about GTA at one point, but I don’t know the specifics. That’s why I’m saying that the DLC problem is not as big as it may appear on the surface and all of the companies are more or less equal.

              1. I think a lot of it depends, like you said for splatoon that the developers plans to support it after launch. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. But it depends on what they mean by this, right? If they have these maps done already, or they are close enough to being done that they can be put in before launch, then I agree that they should not be DLC, but if it’s that at this point in time they just have a few concepts for maps at this point and they need much more time to actually develop them, or they don’t have any real ideas yet but they are just planning on keeping the team together to work on stuff after launch then I think that isn’t so bad. Of course, this depends on price too.

Also, I know I said earlier that the amount of content is important, but that doesn’t go for every game, there isn’t one sole factor that makes for DLC being acceptable or not. A lot of it depends on context of the game and development for the game, since we have limited information on the latter, I tend to evaluate it using information from the former, that’s all.

            2. I have destiny, and let me tell you that I liked it but it does seem like an unfinished game since it’s too short, level gap is 20 or 21 (forgot which one) and if you wanna get to lvl 31 you need to buy the dlc…
Story mode is too short… I am lvl 30 Titan and like to play it now and then, but it gets boring after you get everything in there…
Don’t get me wrong I am waiting for the House of Wolves to get on it yet again, but I just wished the game already had those DLCs integrated and free…

  3. Are skins for Mii fighters considered value for money I wonder? People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

    1. Are those skins not only overpriced but also content meant to be there since launch that was stripped to sell it separately?
      No.
People who can’t understand value differences shouldn’t try to use glass house references.

      1. Who is to know what is original content? Unless someone is a part of the programming team, then who is to know what could be stripped out for DLC down the track? Does one just take the word of a company that there are no bits of game being withheld? DLC is an insidious blight by nature in the games industry, but also apparently the future. Drip feeding for MK8 and SSB is a given but should it be? Why not produce a game in its entirety, and then move on to another project, thus freeing up valuable human resources. You may find that more than three titles would get released for the WiiU in a calendar year that way as well. Or maybe not.

  4. Pingback: Super Smash Bros Creator Masahiro Sakurai says DLC done These days is a Scam | PLAYERESSENCE

    1. It’s hypocritical that he released a finished product and then continued making more content after the full game was released while insulting companies like Bungie for removing content from Destiny and releasing it as $30 DLC? Please, do explain.

      1. Yes, it’s hypocritical because a lot of features in Smash should have been in the game. The title had a very underwhelming amount of stages in it. Now, we’re going to be getting more DLC characters and likely stages even though Sakurai easily could have added them to the main game. Destiny is just as bad, but Sakurai is completely in the wrong as well. He’s just trying to make himself and Nintendo look better than the other companies by saying this. Little does he know that he’s only fooling himself..and Nintendo fans.

        1. Uh, no. The main game had TONS of stages. More than enough to qualify for its price tag.
Furthermore, NONE OF IT was content that was supposed to have been in the main game.
Unlike Destiny, it wasn’t stripped out to sell later.
Don’t use the term hypocrite until you know when to use it.

          1. Are you kidding? Brawl had about as many if not more and that game had to use up a lot of time on Subspace. This game should have had much more stages and I was really disappointed when we got the final roster. The game seriously underwhelmed me and no, it didn’t qualify based on the 60 dollars. 10 more stages and I’d be satisfied. The content should have been in game. They had been planning Mewtwo to be in it from the start. Let’s face it..it was just a cash grab.

            1. No.
The amount of stages was more than enough, especially since many were structured with 8 player Smash in mind.
The roster, as well, was bigger than past titles, and Mewtwo wasn’t something “we should have had at the start”.
The game had far more content that increased its replayability than the last one and that was before they allowed stage sharing and opened up the fighter polls, not to mention the much improved online mode.
The amount of work put into this game was thrice the amount of Brawl, and it was well worth its price tag.
It was not a cash grab.
Only those too cheap to appreciate the effort put into this game would compare it to Destiny’s DLC.

              1. Honestly, I’d say that more work was put into Brawl. Sakurai was too distracted with the 3DS version, which hurt the Wii U one. Think of all the time put into Brawl’s story mode. The Wii U version should have been much bigger than it was and yes, Mewtwo was planned from the start. There is no way that he was not going to be playbale here, but Nintendo wanted the cash grab.

                  1. Because he was highly recommended and just barely did not make it into Brawl. There was no way that Nintendo would get away with not adding him this time and Sakurai knew it.

                    1. Mewtwo was not added in Brawl because e was not a priority. Same thing happened here.
Tes, you could say he was chosen for DLC… so what? The game was finished and that’s a fact. Mewtwo is just a bonus.

                          1. I would. I’m confident that they already did quite a bit of work on him. They did announce him before the game even came out and ripping him from Melee was likely very easy. They essentially just had to trade over his old attacks and modify the design a little. There’s no way that it would legitimately take 6 months and the employees were likely just taking a break. Sakurai was also injured, which likely made him take more breaks than usual as well.

                                1. I meant, purely design wise. His attacks are the same, but the model looks completely different than Melee’s. He’s taller and much more accurate than “Chibi Mewtwo” as fans called him from Melee. It was still pretty easy for Nintendo to develop him.

                                    1. I played it the other day and still play it a lot as it is the best Smash game from a gameplay standpoint. The design is totally different and not because of the change in graphics. It was simply changed.

                                2. How is Mewtwo is a cash grab anyway when everyone begged for his comeback? He was replaced probably because of why that same dumbass fans got Meta Knight terribly nerfed in Smash 4; They don’t know WTF they’re talking about.

                                  1. I’m still confident that Mewtwo was planned from the start, but they decided to just make him DLC early in development. There’s just no way that they would pass on him for two games in a row.

                            1. Mewtwo took like 5 months to release. Stages don’t determine a games value then mkx should be less by that logic. The conent that smash 4 has is worth 60$ I’ve spent 100+ hours on the game

                                1. Then you played more then your money’s worth. The content they added for the wii u version of smash is greater then the 3ds version. Sakurai worked bloody day, and night to get this done I’m sure the 3ds version is holding it back, but what we got still is great. They are even asking the fans of what new characther they want to see in smash The over cast is good( and one of my personally favs)

                                  1. Right, but I would have put that much time into it anyway! For Glory has guaranteed that I shall play this game until the servers go down as I meet up with my Brother and Cousin every night to play a few rounds. Even if there were only three characters, I would keep on going. It still doesn’t discount the DLC issue. I mean, Ryu, and Roy have now been confirmed. Who’s next? I am glad that Nintendo is adding more characters and not all of them are cashgrabs. The costumes and Mewtwo however, I would count.

                                    1. The costume are fine being less then a dollar, plus it took serveal months to get them in the game as well. While I like MKX, it has really dumb ways to get costumes like having to play the mobile version ( which i don’t know if its free) to unlock them on console. Mewtwo may have been plan at some point, but who really knows these things, i have issue with it because he wasn’t day one, he was about 5 months later

                                  1. More characters and stages are the big ones, but if not, we could use more Pokemon and Assist Trophies. A lot of the Pokemon aren’t particularly useful in this game so more powerful ones would be good.

                                      1. At this point, Nintendo could never get away with cutting a Nintendo character who has been around for so long…it simply wouldn’t be worth it!

                                        1. Ice Climbers? I miss them but it’s not a huge issue. Adding Wii Fit, Dark Pit recolor that already exists as Pit’s color, Dr. CLONE and Lucina are a huge waste of time to develop. Among the time it took to add those fuckers, Ice Climbers, Mewtwo and (should have been added) Dark Samus would’ve been officially added and save Mewtwo for later hype.

                                    1. You’re forgetting that there is more stages, all the omega forms are made separately, and they all have unique platform mechanics and boxes, it’s the omega forms that took time out for more stages

                                2. Suspect was met with mixed criticism which is why it wasn’t done again. Smash 4 is basically like Melee with some of Brawl’s similarities. We played story-less Smash games before and it never bothered anyone.

Now to roster, we have some new and old characters that shouldn’t be there *cough* WII FIT…*cough* LITTLE MAC! But I’ve seen worse.

Stages, 3DS may have more and maybe better exclusives but it’s because it’s the first Smash Bros. on a portable outing so it needed some exclusives. Same for Wii U which up its own anti with 8-players, new single-player modes, 1080p and all of that. Having to work on two simultaneous projects is a lot of work so yeah, Wii U is warrant enough for $60 while 3DS is $40 because both as a whole are addicting to play and fun to not put down for years to come.

Tell me something; are you still seriously enjoying that POS COD: Ghosts or or that broken BF4?

                                  1. Those two titles couldn’t even snag me in on opening day! I defend COD a lot, but I still dislike the series and don’t care for BF either. I just can’t get myself to buy either one!

                                    1. “I defend COD a lot” Then you’re an idiot when it comes to defending Ghosts and AW which drew the lines of balanced and fun gameplay that COD4 accomplished and MW2 started to demolish.

                                      1. No, then I am a consumer who believes in fair play. I love EA thanks to Madden so I feel bad for its rivals like Activision once in a while. Competition is good for the market and there’s nothing wrong with a little fun gameplay.

                                        1. EA? Yup. You’re an idiot and most of all, a hypocrite calling out Sakurai for the same shit you approve and waste money from E-fucking-A; the worst gaming company in history . :| Stop talking to me now.

                                          1. I don’t buy their DLC…I just love their games. Also, I’m calling out Sakurai because he brought it up. I don’t support DLC, but I still buy it sometimes. I got Mewtwo for free though. Still, I’ll let the convo end. Feel free to reply if you want to have the last word =)

                                            1. Well, you’re not gonna like EA after hearing about Battlefront 3 getting severely stripped. No space battles, no third person mode, no Old/New Republic thing and many more. So many fans are so pissed right now.

                                              1. You’re assuming that this will happen right because I have not heard any of that. Everyone is really hyped for the game as far as I know.

                                                    1. It’s exactly why the fans, almost every last one, are super pissed about hearing what this sorry ass excuse for Battlefront 3 has to strip out from the last game which was EPICALLY FUN to play.

                                            1. Villager wasn’t added becuase he was too peaceful, most people could not see someone like him being playable until 4

                                              1. Well, and cap falcon? Is he a fighter on the first place? The game intent is not to have only fighters chatacters and yes to nintendo and others company characters getting together on a fighting game.

                                              1. Exactly, Sakurai just loves misdirection so he’s constantly saying things to make fans lower their guard even if he doesn’t necessarily mean them.

                                                1. And did it fool me? Not exactly. Nintendo fans are not that stupid. They see all of the BS happening from third parties and if Nintendo tries something similar or outrageous, they’ll speak out.

                                                  1. Actually, it fooled a bunch of Nintendo fans. I’m glad that you saw through it, but you should have seen the rage on Smashboards and Gamefaqs when Sakurai said those mean things about the Villager way back when. His deceit is usually very convincing.

                                                    1. nintendo is actually fooling a lot of nintendo fans, I mean look at the reactions dreager1 is getting lol…its crazy.

obviously sakurai is a hypocrite, anyone saying otherwise..smh -.-

                                        2. “I don’t understand the difference between removing content during a game’s development to sell later and selling a complete game then making additional paid content later”

                                            1. You need to quit using the word hypocrite until you understand that you are the very thing you call others out for.

                                                1. The fact that you don’t even see your own hypocrisy is astounding.
Let me spell it out for you: you’ve got no right to tell others to go read up, as if they didn’t understand your previous posts, when you clearly haven’t read enough of the article, or understood it well enough, to realize the difference between what Sakurai is doing, and what others are doing.

                                                  1. And….that constitutes hypocrisy in this day and age. Seriously? I’d say that I have read the article well enough and understood what he is saying so….I’m not being hypocritical.

                                                    1. I believe this is more directed towards MKX, as the game has less characters and stages as MK9 and had launch DLC, which is $30 to get everything, and still has less characters and stages as MK9, do you see why he think DLC is a scam, as for smash, mew two might have started development before the games release, but that’s one $5 character, he was pointing out towards companies that take out way more from the games and charge way more

                                        3. sherlockwillfightbilbo

I agree that Smash 4 needed more stages and IMO another story mode. I think they had two big problems though:
                                          1) They split Smash 4 into two versions. This divided the stages up, limited their character limit aka Ice Climbers (although 49 characters is still a LOT), and made developing hell. I think if they just made a Wii U version, Smash 4 would have been significantly better
                                          2) If you look at all the first-party Nintendo games that released between Brawl and Smash 4, not many are original games that are worthy of being in Smash. Before Smash came out a friend and I looked through all the games to figure out who could be in Smash. There were very few new characters to choose from.
I’m not upset about Smash’s DLC because we already got 49 characters, and the developers worked their asses off. If anything, MK8’s character roster is the biggest crime IMO.

                                          1. Yes, the 3DS version was the real reason why Smash 4 was limited. I don’t think it was a terrible idea thanks to the extra money for them, but it was really bad for us consumers. I really think that the Wii U version would be a great deal larger if not for the 3DS one. Who knows, maybe we could have gotten most of the portable stages and Smash Run if not for that.

                                            1. sherlockwillfightbilbo

I’m hoping Smash 5 will look at what worked and what didn’t in every game before it. They spent only 2-2 1/2 years on Smash 4 and made teo versions of it side-by-side. The game was rushed. Everything in it plays well, but there is indeed a lack of interesting modes (Smash Tour sucked, Smash Run had flaws, and no story mode. Sakurai’s reason for no story mode was bullshit as well. He simply did not have the time as Nintendo wanted to get the game out as soon as possible).

                                              1. Agreed, Smash 5 could end up being the definitive Smash game! I just hope that they give him a lot more time on that. To that end, I don’t mind if we don’t get the next Smash game for 6-9 years if it means that the next one will be the ultimate Smashing experience!

                                            2. You might say the 3DS had something to do with it. But hey, at least we got some options and we all did hope for a portable Smash Bros. to happen in the future, I know I did.

                                        4. Well if you are considering on waiting atleast two more years for the “full” game to be release with no additional content for the game that isn’t necessary to have then be my guest. But the DLC that nintendo makes isn’t require to make the game “finish”. Know what the companies are selling because nintendo are doing the DLC right.

                                        5. the content in the game is more than what brawl had already and that game lasted me YEARS. i mean all the music alone in the game is worth more than the game itself (proven). and ur telling me 50 characters is not enough? really? what about the 40 some stages in the wiiu version alone? sakurai and his team puts tons of content in smash game.

                                          1. Brawl did last me until the servers went down so I can agree that it was intense. I didn’t say that 50 characters wasn’t enough. I was satisfied there even if I knew that Mewtwo was already coming out. It is the stages that were very…verrrrrry iffy. There should have certainly been more.

                                        6. You my friend didn’t play SMASH. There are few games that have so much content. I said it already and I will say it again, SMASH could have 50% less content and still be a finished game.

                                      2. First, Smash Bros. wasn’t an incomplete game or a mess like Destiny IS, not was.

There was no intentional content stripping for profit via Smash Bros. compared to Destiny which is the pure opposite of what they advertised and promised from past interviews and trailers. Watch AngryJoe’s video of Destiny to see what that is.

He’s not being a hypocrite because he’s not even doing anything related to what those fuckers at 3rd parties do that none of ya have the brain capacity and balls to complain about.

                                    2. *slow clap* I have to commend you for getting so many people to take your trollbait. Now tell me, how long did you take to prepare these flawed counterarguments and repeat them over and over until they sounded believable to you?

                                  2. I mean, seriously? Sakurai has been on the DLC bandwagon and now he’s saying this. Nintendo has also been doing this in all games. At least now we can’t take petty shots at EA and Microsoft for doing this. All companies have entered this practice. It does make Sakurai look bad for trying to defend himself though.

                                    1. DLC isn’t inherently bad, and Sakurai does not waive his right to criticize the less ethical DLC practices just because he’s offering optional additional content for his game several months after launch. DLC can be a good thing, with the main idea behind it being more stuff getting added to an already-completed game. Day-1 DLC, on-disk DLC, and selling “additional content” for games that feel underweight without it are very deserving of criticism, however.

                                      1. I definitely don’t think that DLC is bad. I just don’t like it when everyone tries to say that it is bad, but it’s totally okay when Nintendo does it. Look at Splatoon, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Hyrule Warriors. Like it or not, Nintendo is getting into the DLC business and they don’t plan on leaving anytime soon. There is no difference between them and Microsoft.

                                        1. All of those feature content that was not stripped from their games to sell later, or even on day 1, as DLC.
That’s not something you can say about some games on Sony and Microsoft.
You need to learn the difference.

                                        2. Its of matter of ho they handle dlc, which many people have stated nintendo is using the right way, and they are not the only ones

                                        3. The difference lies in the method and intent of distributing content. Microsoft sold Ryse for full price and also had microtransactions involved, something that should only be used in games that cost absolutely nothing. EA, who you mentioned earlier, ADMITTED to Mass Effect 3’s Day 1 DLC practice and enjoying the fact that a $60 purchase became an $80 purchase for many people right off the bat. And those are simply one example for the both of them.

If you want to try to speak out against certain Nintendo fans who once said “rarr, DLC bad!!!” at every turn and immediately changed their tune when Nintendo started selling DLC, then that’s one thing. However, you cannot accurately state that Nintendo are the same as the likes of Microsoft or EA simply based on the superficial fact that all 3 sell additional content for their games.

Some companies would be content to stick a vacuum hose into your wallet if they could get away with it. Microsoft’s old Xbox One policies signified this before the backlash forced them to change, and EA’s very existence seems to say that these days. Others would like to support their games after launch but realize that the work required to do so doesn’t usually come free. Nintendo better fits into this category, and their DLC strategy shows it with their support for games like Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart, and Hyrule Warriors.

                                    1. Were you dropped a few times as a baby, did you get it from your parents, or are you just a special kind of stupid? Please learn what hypocrite means before you use it. He clearly stated that developers are making you pay for the rest of an unfinished product. How exactly is he doing that? Because honestly i don’t see how Mewtwo or lucas is an essential part of the game

                                      1. Which everyone can agree on. Based on Nintendo’s healthy DLC track record with Wii U, MK8 was the definitive point of example how to do DLC right which was one of its highlights of what MK8 accomplished. Smash Bros. was never intentionally stripped for profit, they decided to split the game for audiences to choose a side or both with more benefits like having Mewtwo for free, use 3DS as another controller, sharing content between games/friends and so forth.

                                    1. He’s talking about games like Destiny and COD who strip and rehashes for profit from idiots you idiot. EA themselves are the biggest cons on the planet for that reason with Activision not too far behind.

                                  3. He’s right… And the next Fire Emblem in particular is a prime example of this. Fucking Nintendo certainly aren’t exempt from this BS.

                                    1. isnt the dlc for the next fire emblem like the other version? like if you bought nohr you could get the hoshido story as dlc? i mean thats not really dlc? cuz u are already getting a full game and then basically just buying another full game. like both versions will release at the same time

                                      1. We don’t know how large each version is, so we can’t determine yet if they’re trying to rip us off and ruin the Fire Emblem name. And even then, you already bought the entire game, but half of it is locked away from you until you pay more for it. It’s total bullshit but I’m buying it anyway since I’m a Fire Emblem fan.

                                        1. FE:If seems more like LoZ Oracles games to me than half a gaming missing. Two different games with two different campaigns with a third story from linking them. I see nothing wrong with that.

                                            1. From what I’ve read there’s two roughly $40 separate ($80 bundle) physical bundle that will have all three paths or a roughly $40 digital game with second path for $16.50 and third for $16.50. According to my math that’s still $73 for the digital version where you “pay more” for the third path… Yeah I still don’t see the issue.

                                              1. Ah my mistake, “two separate physical games” not bundles, lol. But yeah there’s no mention of the third path not being available if you buy two physical copies individually.

                                  4. Sak… your nothing but a liar so just shut the hell up!
He does nothing but the opposite of everything he says… meaning his DLC is a ripoff!
We already paid sixty bucks… the smash DLC should be ten bucks for five characters!
Screw Nintendo, greedy as everyone else!!

                                    1. Bullshit.
None of that content they’re now making was intended for the launch, it’s not the same thing as what Destiny did.

                                        1. WHICH both have different contents to choose from. This Smash Bros. split is more of a deeper and varied version of Pokemon. And no they didn’t make you buy two of the NOT same games for one character. It’s a promotional giveaway IF you decided to buy two DIFFERENT versions of the game, you idiot. It’s not a forced concept.

Destiny did a fuckton worse. False advertisement stinks all over that game that it makes EA jealous.

                                                1. And how’s that a “mini game”? Smash Tour is shit, a blatant Mario Party copycat that’s not even fun. Tried it once for 4 minutes, got bored of it and think it’s one of the worst modes even done because it’s not right for a fighting game plus the limitations of not picking any character you want only pisses the players off and you collect far less power ups and stat boosts than Smash Run. Smash Run is fucking awesome and worth playing repeatedly to collect tons of shit.

                                        2. Both games are equally great games and I enjoyed both them greatly. Are you saying that Sakurai can’t give fans a little freebie for being big fans of Smash Bros? Even so, no one is forcing you buy both games. You want Mewtwo? Just buy one game and get it for $4 instead of going through the trouble for buying the other version for $60/$40. Seriously, how in hell’s name are the developers of Smash Bros forcing you to buy anything? They are supporting their game post-launch and have their fans coming back to play their games after the game’s release. Not to mention the Smash Bros’s DLC prices are quite luxurious compared the absurd prices I’ve seen for other games.

                                  5. well…….sakurai is pretty right, the dlc for smash is pretty complete, i love playing as mii duban as a fan of xenoblade, and i dont think he just wanted to go the easy route, given that he destroyed his life making smash 4.
he lacked stages, but i mean……..EVERY FREAKING PERSON LIKES PLAYING FINAL DESTINATION with no items, i hate it, but sakurai understood that and made it better……he is a genius

                                  6. In many ways he’s right. A lot of big publishers have been exploiting DLC as a cash grab scam. Capcom was one of the worst and now they’re paying the price for it (pretty literally).

                                    1. Again he is right in a lot of area. BattleFront has DLC planned and its out coming next year. Batman has maps plan out for harley( still hyped for that). Some content are pretty much preorder bonuses. Like Gorro, Harley, battle front ect. Nintendo has done a few times but nothing to high levels of bs. The only major one i can think of is mario golf, and party 10( but no one talks about that). I know some people bring up amiibos, but most amiibos are really just a little bonus, if they handle the amiibo issue i think less people would have less issues with. I agree with Boogie on his thoughts saying that the DLC is memories, but with the amiibo, i have the memories but I have this physcial object. I think, and i feel many others will that the best example of DLC is Mario, Kart 8, and Hyrule Warriors

                                  7. Is he saying ALL DLC is a scam, or did I miss his point? Honestly, sometimes developers just want to add extra content and they can’t always do that free.

Of course their underlying intentions are always up to question, but you have to give some studios the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes it’s obvious, sometimes not.

                                  8. If you feel that way about DLC, how about making an even greater point, by not including it in your games at all?

                                    1. But don’t forget game development is time/money consuming. Only if you go down the “EA/Activision/Microsoft/Capcom/Mobile” route by trying to squeeze more $ by tricking consumers that there is need for it or falsely advertise a “big” game like Destiny.

                                    2. Ridley, the Angel of Death

If he called DLC as a whole a scam, I’d agree with you. But he’s calling out the DLC that is obvious rip-offs. Like content removed from the game to be sold later as paid DLC.

                                  9. For everyone who is saying Sakurai is criticising something Nintendo does themselves, at least Nintendo makes DLC of things people want in their games. Unlike Third Parties, Nintendo develops DLC after a game has high praise not locked into the final project in an effort to make more money

                                  10. i have yet to see anyone complain about nintendos dlc. why? cuz its fair. tons of content for a good price. and everyone is happy for it. they dont feel scammed or ripped off. i certainly dont.

                                  11. Cough Cough overpriced mii suits cough cough not putting in mewtwo at launch. Sakura is 100% right with this, but it is the fundamentals of how human psychology works.

                                    1. Again, mewtwo wasn’t made before launch, and that’s one character, just look at MKX and you can see how bad other companies are with DLC

                                  12. Well I do agree with him. But for smash bros DLC is needed. It helps keep the game alive longer. Also, EVERYONE wanted DLC for smash bros. I know I did.

                                  13. I used to really oppose dlc, but now I don’t care as much depending on the dlc and what the original game has by itself. If it is overpriced or not worth it I usually ignore it.

                                    1. @Deidara
In some cases, I feel that way too, now. Except, most DLC becomes available after I’ve already gotten sick of the game and moved on. Like with Hyrule Warriors and Mario Kart 8. I don’t see much sense in returning just for a few new tracks, cups and characters.

                                  14. This is strange coming from someone who works for a company that abuses DLC. Especially when you have to pay an extra $35+ to unlock all of the content in Splatoon and other games that utilize amiibos in this way.

                                  15. “Sakurai feels that the product delivered to us at launch should be 100% complete and shouldn’t require us giving additional cash post launch”

Talk about putting his foot in his mouth. I’ve always thought that the new Smash Bros. games felt unfinished because of them not having a story mode. I’ve never gotten bored with a Smash Bros. game faster than with these latest entries. In fact, I got bored before unlocking any characters or even playing every mode (in the Wii U version). It just feels like one of those casual games loaded with mini-games. Or a Mario Party with no main Party mode. And how dare Sakurai remove the classic BREAK THE TARGETS mode and replace it with one that’s totally boring! Grrrrrr!!

                                  16. You know what else is a scam? Paying to play online and the Sony/ Mirosoft guys damage control it. But, but, but the online infrastructure costs money. lol you stupid sheep.

                                  17. Paying $40-$60 for a game only to pay $30 for a FREAKING DLC COSTUME+ pack is the legit definition of a scam indeed. The worse part? All of it was released the EXACT SAME DAY AS THE GAME’S RELEASE. It’s not even near reasonably priced.

Sakurai, despite what other persons say, you and Nintendo do DLC right and you’re definitely not being a hypocrite here. Please continue to put even more replayability into Smash Bros.

                                  18. Pingback: Para Masahiro Sakurai, los DLC son un timo, pero los de Smash Bros... [Opinión] | www.nextn.net

                                      1. Yeah, when other companies have DLC, they’re all full of shit. When Nintendo does it, hallelujah! If you’re going to pick and choose which DLC you’re going to shit on, then you can’t generalize every DLC for the companies you dislike.

                                          1. I think I understand it well enough. Releasing extra character DLC to maintain support for a game after release is different than what other developers have done, and is a fine implementation of DLC – but Nintendo isn’t sinless either, and for you to again generalize the “enemy” is again disingenuous and just plain petty and immature.
Nintendo also is fairly new with doing DLC in comparison to other developers, so time will tell whether they are able to maintain the higher quality – although I seem to recall reading about content in Mario Party that’s unlocked only with an Amiibo, too.
Adding extra content later on in the future with DLC is fine, and seems to be what Sakurai is mainly making a point on (although that also depends on the price of that DLC – personally I don’t find the value in paying 8 bucks for some extra characters and tracks in MK8, but again, that’s just me….). Having content already on the disc behind a paywall is a dick move, and again, something Nintendo is not guiltless of having.
We can certainly have a CIVIL discussion about the good implementation of DLC, but whether that happens is entirely up to you and your willingness to adhere to your blind bias.

                                            1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

                                              >>>The day Nintendo starts to do the same thing as the Electron Army does today, you can count on me out of the empire forever>>>

                                  19. Doesn’t Mario Kart 8 currently have content locked on the game that you can only get once you pay for DLC?

                                  20. The title’s misleading: In context, he’s not referring to downloadable content in general, but about developer tendencies to release games in a relatively unfinished state, then release the rest of the game as paid DLC. He’s not against the idea of paid DLC as bonus content.

As an example, Smash Brothers for Wii U/3DS is practically complete, especially since the final roster is almost exactly the same as the initial planned roster (*cough* Ice Climbers *cough*).

Mewtwo wasn’t originally planned for the game, but he decided to have Mewtwo in the game… as paid DLC.

I presume this is the same for Lucas and, if the rumors are true, Fire Emblem’s Roy and Street Fighter’s Ryu.

Another perfect example would be Mario Kart 8. Without the DLC courses and characters, the game can be considered a full-fledge game with the same amount of courses as its predecessors Mario Kart DS, Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 7.

True, the Animal Crossing X Mario Kart DLC did come with the 200cc mode, but that was an update to the base game itself, not a feature that came with the DLC.

                                  21. Ridley, the Angel of Death

The ones calling Sakurai a hypocrite are obviously just mad he called out the very assholes they support, like EA, Ubisoft, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment who own the studio that is making Mortal Kombat X. The bias for Nintendo is there from some of us but the bias against Nintendo is just as strong from those calling Sakurai a hypocrite. Awww. Are you mad Sakurai is calling out your precious scumbag 3rd parties for their shitty DLC practices? Contrary to what you 3rd party white knights like to believe, amiibo don’t count as shitty DLC because you are getting something physical to keep at home that you can actually display & sort of play with. The content the amiibo unlock are what we like to call a bonus.
