Konami Says Mobile Is The Future Of Gaming And Will Be Konami’s Main Platform

There’s been a lot of talk about Konami lately especially regarding P.T and the Metal Gear Solid series. Konami’s new CEO Hayakawa has explained to Japanese publication Nikkei Trendy Net that he believes that mobile is the future of gaming and that is where they are going to put their resources from now on. This may be disheartening to some, but it seems to be the direction they are heading.

“Our main platform will be mobiles. Following the pay-as-you-play model of games like Power pro and Winning Eleven with additional content, our games must move from selling things like “items” to selling things like “features.”

“We saw with these games that even people who buy physical games are motivated to buy extra content. The success of Power pro especially has motivated us to actively push more of our popular series onto mobile than ever before.”

“Gaming has spread to a number of platforms, but at the end of the day, the platform that is always closest to us, is mobile. Mobile is where the future of gaming lies.”

“We hope that our overseas games such as MGSV and Winning Eleven continue to do well, but we are always thinking about how to push our franchises onto mobile there too.”

“With multiplatform games, there’s really no point in dividing the market into categories anymore. Mobiles will take on the new role of linking the general public to the gaming world.”

Thanks, Nintendo Impact Gaming!

    1. ill laugh once nintendo relewses their own mobile games. konami sells slots machines as well, so they might not die just yet.

  1. I’ll miss the rhythmn games their lazy asses never localized. I guess pachinko machines and lazy mobile games are more profitable.

    1. Probably anyone who was looking forward to Metal Gear Solid V. Now all that’s left of that game is Ground Zeroes, which is like an hour long if you don’t know what you’re doing.

      1. Phantom Pain is still happening (for now at least), but it probably is the last console game Konami will ever make. If MGS5 was cancelled, there will be literal riots outside of Konami HQ.

        1. Honestly the only reason they are finishing it, its because they’ve already spend so much money on it.

      2. It’s a fucking 5 minute long demo that sadly conned it’s own fanbase. That DEMO is a grand scheme of gaming sense EA and CoD/DLCs. Every fool who wasted $30 on that shit needs to be bitch slapped with Ground Zeroes game case until it breaks Big Boss into crying.

  2. I doubt they’re gonna die out just because of a transition to mobile. They might even do better…

… still pretty damn depressing anyway though…

    1. Look at Capcom….they spent all the profits from MH4 (Not MH4U) on a new studio that would only make mobile games, and what happened? Over a year later now, and no profit has been made from that lol. It blew up in their face. Consoles is what made Konami last this whole time, now to throw it all away to go to a FAD cause Smartphone gaming won’t last say 10 more years. Konami will die. It’s just a matter of how fast will it happen.

  3. I don’t think that mobile will be the new form of gaming for most people. The screens are to small and where are the joysticks:)

    1. Define “most people”.

The mobile market is huge in Japan, which is why I presume Konami made that conclusion in the first place. Konami’s a Japanese game company.

      1. Yea, but they also sell a lot of consoles. Same with America and the UK so going only mobile might mean losing some money.

      2. “Most people” play games on phones anyway. You don’t have to be a dedicated gamer to pay for a microtransaction or something, just an ordinary smartphone owner with some time to kill. If you’re targeting dedicated gamers, yeah, the console and PC market is probably the choice to go for, but if you’re targeting people in general, the mobile market is waaaaaaay larger.

    2. Not only that, fucking freemium with ripoff microtransactions everywhere you look. Sooner or later, it’ll bound to annoy and piss people off to a point of actually making it illegal which it should be happening now.

    1. No. It’s the STUPID people behind it that’s ruining everything by making it okay to waste money on fucking deliberate gameplay padding schemes that only lasts mere seconds to minutes per $5-200 pop.

    1. Also, Bonk, Adventure Island, Star Solider, Lost in Shadow, Faxanudu (if Nintendo doesn’t own it), Military Madness, Milon’s Secret Castle, etc

  4. A sad day for gamers…but great news for Nintendo fans too! It’s been confirmed that there’ll be “one more round” of the Testfire on Saturday 23rd May at 3pm Pacific / 6pm Easterm / 11pm UK / midnight CET for one hour :D

  5. I’m a 50yr old gamer who started gaming 12 years ago on ps2. I absolutely hate mobile games although I think I fit a major demographic for them. I also think there are lots like me. I’m busy during my normal day. When I relax I am NOT playing no mobile.

  6. Welp, in the words of Alpha Omega Sin… FUCK KONAMI!!! FUCK THEM FUCK THEM FUCK THEM!!!!
    Seriously though.. fuck them.
I mean, Nintendo jumped into Smart phones, BUT they are still staying true to dedicated games platforms.
    Why can’t Konami?
    Greed i guess.

        1. I think it could happen and oh my god, Konami will fucking regret it if they do just to hop on Mobile’s ripoff dick. lol I can’t wait to see the shitstorm they’re gonna stir up.

  7. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

    >>>Please follow these imbeciles the rest of you, and then the empire will once again reclaim all lost territories and when we do, we will never share it ever again>>>

  8. RIP Konami, god help us and hope they are greedy enough they feel the urge to sell their IPs to truly video game developer studios that can take a good care of them all.

  9. “mobile is the future of gaming” <–This statement seems very Japan-centric, where home consoles aren't as important. I suppose when you take that into consideration, then you recall that the Vita still hasn't taken off, and that the 3DS faces stiff competition from tablets and smartphones. Still, it seems like a bizarre statement to me, a North American gamer.

Konami was one of the greats, and was there right from the beginning. Fuck, I don't want to live in a world without Castlevania <– My favorite franchise of all time.

  10. The casual audience isn’t to be forever. They never cared about games in the first place. Abandon your real audience and you’ll have nothing in the end. We’ll go else where.

  11. Konami has been saying it for a decade now. It why most of the former Hudson soft members left (they are now ND cube) and IGA left.

  12. Goodbye Konami, it was fun while it lasted. Goodluck on your mobile endeavor, just don’t expect us to support you in this or when you finally realize you’ve dug your own grave and come crawling back to consoles.

I guess the consoles you preferred to support rather than Nintendo wasn’t quite as profitable, was it?

    1. And that last part, those 3rd rate partying idiots think they’re gonna live for long by cutting Nintendo out of the picture and phase with two dying platforms..actually one but the other’s company “Sony” is bleeding it’s bank dry. XD Oh the irony of their misguidance, greed and stupidity.

    2. It’s like they don’t learn, Monolith and Platinum went through the same crap, luckily they realized the error of their ways before it was too late and turned to Nintendo.

  13. Literally Cancer.

Pandering to the lowest common denominator rather than thinking about appealing to real gamers with forward-thinking ideas and concepts.

No more MGS. End of an era.

  14. Wow they fell into that trap, thinking mobile gaming is the future. Its really not since mobile games are really just time wasters rather than fully-flegded games. Lets hope Nintendo doesnt fall for this trap since they are gonna start with mobile games too.

    1. While I agree that mobile will never replace dedicated consoles and computers, we have to understand that the market for the later is indeed reducing fast, and with games becoming increasingly expensive to make the industry as it is today is headed for demise, not because of mobile, but because of its own standards.
The largest force driving this problem is the development philosophy of PC, Sony and Microsoft, the fact that they keep focusing on hardware power is the main reason for the accelerated increase of development costs, and Nintendo is stuck in between pleasing a public that has come to expect this and trying to increase the longevity of the industry by creating affordable products.
Think about it, Nintendo consoles rarely doubled in power from the previous generation, Wii U is by far the biggest generational leap from Nintendo, and I’m not sure they would have done it had they not seen themselves pressured to do it to compete with the other companies, since the 7th generation Nintendo has known that if they just keep mindlessly increasing the power of their consoles the day will come when development is no longer sustainable; lower development costs means lesser risks when investing in development, less apprehension from third party developers and better prices for consumers, which creates install bases on both sides of the field without risking bankrupting anyone of them, because they all depend on each other.
This is the reason why I’m really hoping NX does two things:
1-Not come out before late 2017/early 2018, when the technology it uses becomes even slightly more affordable.
      And,
2-Be on par with XB1 and PS4 or even slightly less powerful.
If they work NX like this Nintendo will be better poised to survive the 9th generation than any other company.

  15. I understand that you see the future of gaming on mobiles, Konami. But do you know what you won’t see? You won’t see one more penny from me. – Every real gamer.

  16. First Sega and now Konami. What a shame to see these veterans and once big dogs of the gaming industry abandon the dedicated market for the casual market. My sentiments is the same as many others here, I hate what the casual market is doing to the gaming industry as a whole. Maybe just maybe Konami will sell the Bomberman IP and if we are really lucky sell it to no one other than Nintendo (but highly doubt it since they have had that shitty mobile game of his out in Japan for a while now.)

    1. Well, SEGA didn’t really have a choice, they made some really big mistakes in the last few years, retiring games like Bayonetta while banking on games like Sonic Boom.
Konami is more or less in a Capcom situation in which they take the leap because they’re no longer relevant.

  17. Not a penny from me.

News flash Konami, mobile is not the future of gaming. In fact, its a whole seperate market.

They need to be honest with their fans and tell them they are leaving the gaming market for the smart phone app market.

    1. R.I.P is intended for console/pc market. Of course Konami will get profit from mobile market considering that mobile market is huge thing in Japan. Anyway, they focus more on mobile gaming in future and for me, it’s a back-stab for me as a fan. Well, goodbye Konami. Unfortunately, mobile gaming is not for me.

  18. “mobile gaming is the future”
I’m going back to masturbating for entertainment then. Beats trying to play sucky games on an even sucky-er touch screen and pathetic battery life. At least there’s a happy ending lol!
Cue all the mobile finacial fanboy comments…..as if it matters!!!

  19. I won’t be supporting Konami, but they’re not wrong about where gaming is heading – mobile is already a huge market is Japan, and it’s growing in other markets too. That’s not to say that there won’t be console gaming of any kind in the future, but mobile gaming is certainly gaining ground.

    1. This isn’t doing much to stop the cancer that mobile gaming represents, you either die a real gaming company, or live long enough to become a shitty smartphone company.

  20. I'm a Boss Ass Bitch

Wait aren’t these the people who made hyrule warriors or was it just team ninja? If so than hyrule warriors 2 with a proper online battle system is now flushed down the fucking drain.

  21. Dang, Konami. You used to be cool. What happened? Silent Hills got cancelled, Kojima is gone, and now you’ve abandoned your fans for the mobile market? This is just sad.

  22. I think it’s funny that the new CEO of Konami thinks a device with no controller, limited specs, and a 4-5 inch screen is the future of gaming..

    No wonder Kojima quit..

  23. RIP Konami, you might make a lot of money, but you’re dead to every single real gamer, to every fan of longtime series like Castlevania and Metal Gear, you fucked Castlevania up and you set up MGSV to be the last one.

  24. Who would have thought Konami were expert trolls. But seriously, it’s hilarious that they think mobile gaming is the future…….

  25. A disgusting and shameful thing for one of my favorite classic game companies to say. If mobile gaming is the future, that means that I won’t always be a gamer. Which is a scary thought, since I don’t give a crap about anything else in life.

  26. This… is heartbreaking. Konami once was one of my favorite companies back in the SNES days. Their orange swiggly logo and magical chime were once synonymous with quality craftsmanship in gaming. Castlevania, Metal Gear, Silent Hill, Suikoden. How you will be missed! Tears, man… tears.

  27. That’s it folks. Konami is now fucked up and dead to us. All credibility lost when those disgusting words have uttered out: “Mobile is the future of gaming” WRONG. It’s the future for opportunists and cons of gaming to scope out and trick the stupid kinds of consumers for quick and easy money for false sense of fun.

Well fuck you Konami and I do hope you burn pretty fucking quick.

  28. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Congratulations, Konami! You let a greedy corporate douchebag become your CEO! *claps* Enjoy selling your soul for money! Can you do us a favor & take EA with you? Please..?

  29. This company used to be cool, come on! Out of this Sega and Capcom who could be the next to go bankrupt?

  30. Good god, this is probably the reason Silent Hills was canceled. I wish this mobile gaming fad would die already.

  31. Konami making stupid business decisions as usual is no surprise but this time they’ll pay heavily for it. Them venturing into the mobile gaming market at the same time as Nintendo will be the final nail in the coffin of a once great but troubled gaming company

RIP Konami………..you deserve to be dead

  32. I ain’t even mad. It’s actually amazing how one company can fuck up so many times,so badly,in such a short amount of time.
Silent Hills canceled, the demo has been pulled and now this.
It’s been a good run,Konami. Thanks for all the good things that have come from you in the past and may the current you die a fast and well deserved death, just to spare whatever microscopic amount of respect from the fans you have left

  33. All the once great, big Japanese game companies have gone to shit and,if not, they’re very quickly getting there
Where do we go from here?
Cuz, completely contrary to these company’s beliefs, including Nintendo, I sure as hell am not going anywhere near mobile anytime soon(unless its emulation)

  34. What makes me sick is that no matter how many people are angry about this, Konami will probably still make all of the money they expected to make, and end up thinking they were right. Instead of being taught the ultimate lesson that mobile games SUCK!

  35. what worry me the most is the fact they see mobile game and DLC as the only market and adopt a shark mentality (let’s try to find an easy and better way to con people in order to make money). I know a company need to make money, but I question the ethic about making money. I hope the future of gaming will still lie with handle and home consoles. more reason to keep my Wii U console.

  36. Another bad thing is that Hudson Soft (another of my favorite classic game companies) went defunct in 2012, and was then Aquired by Konami Digital Entertainment. A double sword in the back. I’ve wanted more Adventure Island games for YEARS. Just how many more of the best, most awesome game companies of the NES days are going to go bankrupt, or pull a mobile crap move?

  37. Why the fuck is “mobile” only used for shitty phone and tablet games, since when is the 3DS and Vita not a MOBILE platform? I wouldn’t mind if companies would release shitty, watered down, glorified demos with Pay 2 Win mechanics for Joe Blow’s smudged up phone while he is taking a smelly dump, IF they would also release the FULL versions of the game on REAL handhelds. (like seriously Level-5 why the fuck cant you make two versions of Fantasy Life 2 for each platform you twats)

Now my dreams of getting to play Konami vs Capcom some day are truly dead.

    bye bye Frogger
    sayanora Goemon
    adios Sunset Riders
    ciao Sparkster
I will never forget you Vic Viper
    see ya Bill Rizer
    rest in peace Belmont clan
    Semper fi Solid Snake
and you will be missed Bonk, Bomberman, Master Higgens and the rest of the Hudson crew.

May you all fade away with a shred of dignity and escape the fate of being mutilated by glorified paper weights that some fools call “the mobile platform”.
