Konami Issues Apology And Explains ‘Mobile First’ Future

Everyone was rather taken aback at the recent actions by Konami during which the company parted ways with Hideo Kojima and left the PT project in limbo. The company also said that they were now focussing their efforts on the mobile space. Konami has come out and has explained that their recent actions have “prompted a great deal of anxiety, for which we apologise.” They then issued a statement to try and make things a little clearer for gamers regarding their future plans. Here’s what the company had to say to The Nikkei.

“Our aim is to continue to build up a comprehensive portfolio of console, arcade, and card game titles for each IP while also making the best possible use of the mobile devices that accompany our customers in their daily life, thus expanding the limits of entertainment and appealing to more and more customers,” Hayakawa said. Indeed, Konami is focusing on mobile, and it’s because the publisher is focusing on its own soil first and foremost.

“Until now, in addition to game development duties, our creators were handling a wide range of responsibilities including managerial roles,” Hayakawa said. This became incredibly complicated, and didn’t work with Konami’s apparent unification of teams, so “we have changed our approach to instead have managerial staff thoroughly focus on strategy and how their individual skills can be best applied, with that strategy then being executed together with the creative staff.”

The strength of Konami as a company, Hayakwa said, is in its “power to create groundbreaking IPs, and our power to refine them into progressively better products.” This “has been the driving force behind our business. However, whereas platforms to date were very limited, we now need to split our approaches between console, arcade, card, and mobile games to best suit the needs of the customer.”

Konami’s statement concluded, “Konami will continue to embrace the challenge of creating entertainment content via different platforms; across not only mobile platforms, but for home consoles, arcade units, and cards, to meet the changing needs of the times. Your support for our current endeavours, and your spurring us on to greater heights, are as always deeply appreciated.”

  1. Bullshit… Still doesn’t explain why P. T. was cancelled and why the hell they cant continue it!

  2. “Our aim is to continue to build up a comprehensive portfolio of console, arcade, and card game titles for each IP”
Yet you still canned Silent Hills. And IGA and their Castlevania titles. And that 3DS Contra game that probably didn’t even leave pre-production.
Seriously, what’s Konami worth nowadays? Once they release MGSV, they’re dead to me.

  3. All I’m hearing is “You’re all fucking faggots! Hope you like Silent Hill Kart for Android and iOS!”

      1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

        >>>And yet I bet he still buys their garbage, just like many of the N-Dub Nation that constantly bashes the Xbots and specially the Sonyans and then still buy their crap, hypocrites>>>

  4. I like how every Playstation and Xbox fanboy is quick to jump on how great third party games are when they aren’t on Nintendo consoles but the second they jump on mobiles suddenly the group on NeoGAF talk about how bad their games have been and how they deserve to fail.

MGS5 beta sold at full price edition was terrible and you all know it. You are just throwing BS around because it didn’t come to Wii U.

    1. What? Nobody is “throwing BS” around. People are simply upset at the decision Konami is making.

      1. When people on websites are saying “OMG the Wii U fanboys be in denial about MGS5 because it is the greatest game ever” just because it isn’t on Wii U, they are throwing BS.

        1. Literally none said that in this comment section, which leads me to believe that you’re talking about those ‘groups on NeoGAF’ you mentioned previously.
If that’s the case, why are you parroting your console-war speech in here?

          1. I have called out NeoGAF on numerous occasions. Why can’t I call them out directly? For some reason….. I can’t join their website. Must be difficult to understand amirite?

Seriously though there have been people on this place posting the same stuff in previous articles. EA related, CoD related etc. I think I have a right to say that it isn’t universally accepted third party games are the second coming and not everybody likes them. More and more these days I find third party games gimped because of greedy business practices.

If you can get me on NeoGAF I would appreciate your help. I want to call those trolls out. For you, you haven’t been posting here long if you think the same fanboys don’t occupy here. Here and Wii U Daily get it to. Just not on the level of trolling GAF.

See the people impersonating Sony and Microsoft usernames on previous posts to see they do occupy here to.

            1. “Why can’t I call them out directly?”
              Key word: directly

“there have been people on this place posting the same stuff in previous articles”
Post your reply to them ‘directly’ in those other articles, then.

“you haven’t been posting here long if you think the same fanboys don’t occupy here”
That’s not the matter at hand. The matter at hand is that you’re not better than them, and you’re not helping.

    2. It’s about Konami, like others including Capcom, has gone beyond fucked up on abolishing their fanbases and actual working business models for Fool’s Money from the fucking mobile market that every sane person hates. Those who happen to like it are the same fuckers who never tried a real video game or platform before and using a cellphone as an excuse to know what gaming is by spending hundreds of dollars on pointless and uselessly window dressed gimmicks like morons.

  5. After mgs 5 konami is dead to me. Looking forward to the kojima kickstarter game next year. You know this is coming.

  6. Anxiety? Lol I don’t give a fuck how your business does, I’m no investor. I’m just pissed off that the only thing they seemed to be doing right got cancelled, and that they erase all traces of their legend Kojima.

    1. Gotta love how often ‘apologies’ are really ‘we are sorry for causing your misunderstanding or emotional insecurities’ rather than ‘we are sorry for acting really damn stupid.’

  7. Fuck you Konami. I hope your mobile ambitions fail and I hope your fitness clubs falter. Bull-fucking-shit mobile is the future. You really think that you can create a sophisticated game like Metal Gear, or something as atmospheric as Silent Hill, or something with as tight of controls as Castlevania ON PHONES??!!

Oh but let’s not forget PT for a second… you know, one of the best games of 2014. Giantbomb gave it best horror game of 2014 over Alien Isolation by the way and that’s really saying something! You could have just as easily removed the trailer from the ending and charged $5 for it!!

Nevermind the fact that you guys own all of Hudson as well. Will we ever see another Bomberman, Bonk, or Adventure Island either… probably fucking not.

It’s amazing on how within just a few months, you guys can become worse than both Capcom and Square-Enix combined. The only way we can ever see another proper Silent Hill, Castlevania, MGS, Contra, Bomberman, Bonk, or Adventure Island is to boycott your mobile sales, and I hope everyone out there who gives a damn about any of those franchises does.

    /rant

    1. On a side note I want to plead with you guys to NOT BOYCOTT Metal Gear Solid 5. Let’s really show Konami how well a console game can sell. Hopefully one day they’ll change their mind!

      1. No. Please boycott because the priced demo was the final straw as it conned only the few idiots who deserves to have their brains removed and scrubbed to realize what a fucked up stunt that was.

        1. I agree that Ground Zeroes was a fucked up idea but I’d put the blame on the people who actually bought it. I wasn’t going to pay that much and I didn’t, I have it for free now due to Playstation plus.

If we want Konami to make more console games, why should we boycott their biggest release this year? It would just further their perception that console games don’t make enough money!

      2. No the sales won’t change their minds. Konami s leaving the game market is inevitable. Mobile phone is easy out for them. And kojima doesn’t need good sale for this game as he’s been constant for years.

  8. Hard to believe this is the same company that brought us castlevania and metal gear solid. The hell is wrong with them. SEGA and Konami need to get their heads out of their bungholes and get back to the way they used to be. But honestly, we all know both of those companies are screwed unless somebody buys them.

  9. I will say I did enjoy Castlevania 64 very much so. Also, the MGS: The Twin Snakes was fun. : )

    1. It’s not $30. It’s $20. Anyways, it’s actually free next month on PS+ so yay for me. Lol.

      1. Actually, it was $40 at the start but stood at $30 for a while. For a mere fucking demo that lasts for a maximum of 3-5 minutes of you blaze through it, Konami royally fucked its own fanbase too. Is every goddamn major gaming corporation turning so fucking greedy and stupid nowadays, even Nintendo? X(

          1. Going mobile? Check. Ruining online experiences in any given way? Check. Making one dumbass business decisions after another from lack of Wii U ads to not releasing new standard 3DS in America and cutting voice chat from Splatoon? Double Check.

            1. comparing konami’s business decisions to nintendos is just idiotic , for one nintendo is still focusing on gaming console just with a bit of mobile while konami is just ditching everything for mobile , also nintendos online isn’t bad its fine people just exaggerate about it , the only decision i hate from nintendo right now is their youtube policy

        1. Ok, I came back to this comment after playing a bit of it to tell you that you cannot blaze through it at all unless you absolutely know what you’re doing or have played it before. With Ground Zeroes being my first actual Metal Gear Solid game, when I first started playing it, I was completely overwhelmed. They put you on one level, but it is a huge level. I’m trying to figure out a way to infiltrate the camp but I don’t quite have a plan yet. The AI in the game is extremely intelligent. When I try to hide, they seem to walk directly where I am and there isn’t much space I could hide since other guards are shining spotlights across the map. I can’t take the offensive route either because I did that and they called reinforcements to the point where I had no choice but to go back in hiding. I’ll figure it out eventually, but so far, it is quite an awesome experience. XD

  10. Ridley 4 Smash DLC!

Konami couldn’t take the heat they were getting so are backtracking hard with their earlier stance about mobile being the future. *lol* Sadly, the damage has already been done. Your company is going to have to kiss a ton of ass if you want to get back into the good graces of the majority of gamers. That includes bringing Kojima & del Toro back to make Silent Hills, you fucking stupid monkeys! Time to stop flinging shit at each other in the Konami HQ!

  11. It was clear the first time Konami. Didn’t realize the backlash would prompt them to “back track” and adjust their business plan. I guess they realized that the gamers they just pissed off could eventually ignore their “mobile venture” and eventually kill Konami.
