Mario Kart 8 Rockets To Number One In UK Fans’ Top 10 Wii U Games

Nintendo UK asked fans last month to choose their favourite Wii U title in order to be in with a chance of winning £50 eShop credit. As many as 2,000 fans cast their votes via Twitter over the course of May, with notable mentions going to Ubisoft titles Rayman Legends and ZombiU, as well as indie game Affordable Space Adventures. All votes have been counted and verified by Nintendo UK and, as they say, there can only be one winner. Perhaps it was the Luigi death stare that toppled this game to victory, or maybe it was the more logical fly-off-the-track 200cc mode, but Mario Kart 8 claimed the gold trophy as the UK’s most loved Wii U game so far.

Though Super Smash Bros. for Wii U came a close second, and Zelda titles such as Hyrule Warriors and Wind Waker HD placed in third and fourth, respectively, it just wasn’t enough to knock Mario Kart 8 from its high-speed victory run. You can view the top 10 games in full, here, or alternatively in the numbered list below. Did you get involved in the voting process? Let us know in the comment section below.

  1. Mario Kart 8

  5. Super Mario 3D World

      1. Nintendo dont put voice chat in most if their games because they are more for little kids not teens and adults more a pussy company talking away basic fun….but they do make good games.

  1. This is great news! Mario kart 8 is what got me hooked to the wii U in the first place! :D (my boyfriend’s wiiU). But now with Splatoon, I could no longer resist buying my own wiiU. Now if only nintendo releases an animal crossing wiiU game, and that would be amazing!

    1. If the Wii U is a kiddy console then I am a proud kiddy. Ashame people actually avoid fun from the fear of being “kiddy”. Ironically when you get old you will wish you were still a kiddy…

Only kiddie game I see is Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8 are “kid friendly” but they aren’t “for” kids. The rest are hardcore games.

    3. Maybe because none of them are educational, and fully serve their purpose of being fun video games that can appeal to any age?

      Dunno, makes sense to me.

      Nice troll though.

As soon as the Wii U version came out I never touched my 3DS version again. I never even downloaded Mewtwo for the 3DS version of the game, because I didn’t care enough to do it.

Wii U has better online, in my opinion and it looks SO much nicer and has better stages. The 3DS version’s stages are terrible, in my opinion.

        1. Smash Run, better than that weak ass Mario Party mode. 3DS has more exclusive stages and you can play it ANYWHERE. Plus, the online seems to work better than Wii U and its graphics is as good as Wii U since it’s the same game engine but with neat 3D. Lastly, that OP Little Mac isn’t as broken or much of an issue to fight on 3DS.

How is the 3DS stages terrible? They aren’t as intrusive as Wii U with so many distractions going on.

          1. pink0crystal0midbus

-Smash Run can’t be played online… = useless, because I ONLY play online.

-I don’t play video games outside my house, so it doesn’t matter if I can take it “anywhere.”

-The Wii U’s online definitely works better, because the Wii U’s internet capabilities are stronger technically.

-The Wii Us graphics are DEFINITELY better and this is not debatable, because the Wii U can output at a better resolution. Smash Bros for Wii U outputs at 920x1080p (which is better than Mario Kart 8 actually) while the 3DS is stuck at 400x240p (or 800x240p in 3D). Plus, I hate using 3D as it annoys my eyes, so I wouldn’t play the game in 3D anyway. I have never played a 3DS game in 3D…

-Little Mac is the same character in BOTH games and that goes for ALL characters. It is impossible for him to be easier to beat in the 3DS version vs the Wii U version. He is equally as beatable in both versions.

            – I play For Glory Mode pretty much exclusively, so I don’t play on the Wii U’s stages while they have “intrusive elements.” However, regardless, the stages are MUCH prettier to look at and there is a greater variety of stages from different franchises in the game compared to the 3DS version. I hate the 3DS Smash Bros stages, because they are boring as hell and too many of them are pre-existing stages (Corneria, Jungle Japes, Distant Planet, etc.) I dislike the Balloon Fight Stage, the Find Me Stage, The Golden Plains Stage, Gerudo Valley, Living Room, Magicant, Spirit Train and the Tomodachi Life stage because they are either too bland or have stupid layouts or have a stupid mechanic that I don’t like. For example, the Find Mii Stage is bland as hell and looks awful, the Spirit Train stage has no room and the layout is not suitible for fighting, Magicant has that stupid Bird fighter which is annoying and Gerudo Valley has the bridge drop in the center which is annoying.

–Overall, the Wii U version is far superior. Most everyone agrees, including me, including other gamers and including official reviewers.–

        2. It’s hard to play the 3ds version when you could play the Wii U version instead. It’s almost like an iPad app, which would you rather play the lite version, or the full version?

      2. Same. Those of us who prefer. 3DS smash totslly get it. I’m pretty sure the smash community is dplit on this topic, bug yeah, love the game modes, 3D and portability. (any room of the house, on the couch, in bed, at the gym)

          1. YES…very true. Splatoon is huge because…what else are WiiU owners going to buy?

I have so many amazing 3DS games to play.

    1. Well, it’s being supported till the next Mario kart game comes out with Updates and DLC, so it’s no shocker it’s still being played.

    1. pink0crystal0midbus

I think it’s because they were doing this poll before Splatoon was released. If they did it after Splatoon’s release, it would be much higher.

    2. But at least Hyrule Warriors launched with enough content and had a lot more for its buck. Splatoon is released half complete and still releasing missing content, just like what that con Destiny pulled.

      1. pink0crystal0midbus

Except all the content that comes out for Splatoon is FREE. It is to keep the game’s appeal going. If all the content is released at once, then people will rush through it in a couple days to a week and be done with the game. Release it periodically and people will come back for more.

Splatoon gets weekly updates and will continue to get them for a while. I think it is a genius strategy. Makes the game evolve indefinitely. A strategy that works today might not work next week with the new content added.

          1. pink0crystal0midbus

It is going to remain full priced even up through when they are releasing the content anyway…

          2. I actually agree. Splatoon was light on the content side. I think Nintendo just wanted it out before summer officially starts, so they were not quite finished with the game…

But honestly, half of Splatoon is still more fun than most games out right now. And that’s all that matters in the end, whether or not you had fun.

Xenoblade Chronicles is enough reason to own a Wii U. Games like Splatoon and all the other amazing 1st party titles are just icing on the cake, in my honest opinion….

            1. Xenoblade X IS NOT ENOUGH REASON TO OWN A WI U….it may be a good game but classic i highly doubt……If nintendo would port the Wii Vc games to Wii u eshop to play on gamepad then Wi u would be worth owning….

            2. Yeah. I wouldn’t count a short three minute match would be “totally fun”. Do you have any idea how fast 3 minute passes? You’ll feel like you just played for 2 minutes. It’s that embarrassingly short. And there’s absolutely no fucking excuse for Nintendo rushing out a half ass game at full price when third parties do it on a regular basis and people lose their shit about it when it comes to them. No. Nintendo suddenly gets a pass because “they’re more fun”? Fuck that shit. I expect to have a $60 worth game out of the gate, not an incomplete ghost town of content that should cost $40, maybe $50.

        1. There is a difference between staggering content and functionality. MH, Layton, Hyrule Warriors all stagger content, Splatoon, the WiiU, MK8, the 3DS, all came out half baked and incomplete.

  2. The Wii U has the best exclusive games of any current system. The replay value of Nintendo’s exclusives are unmatched. I can play MK8, Smash, and Splatoon non-stop. Splatoon is my latest addiction. I may have to go to Nintendo rehab. ;) Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze should be on that list. The music alone should have DKCTF on the list.

    1. The music was the only good thing about Tropical Freeze.

Everything else including the level design was one giant mess. No wonder it wasn’t a huge seller. Perhaps next time Retro Studios shouldn’t focus on cheap difficulty.

        1. All the Donkey kong country games sucked….want a hard game thats fun Try Gouls n ghost for Sega genesis or Snes now thats a classic

            1. No the last good Metroid game was Super Metroid Super Nes The Wii controller sucked and metroid wasnt meant to be 3d it is better 2d i promise u son

              1. If you think Metroid’s better in 2D, then shouldn’t Metroid Zero Mission be your last good Metroid Game???

            2. pink0crystal0midbus

I liked the Metroid Prime Trilogy AND Metroid Other M. I would argue that all four of those games are great games.

      1. My God, will you just shut up about Voice Chat. You’re just as bad as the SuperPS4 guy……-_-

  3. splatoon only just came out IDIOTS

AMAZING GYRO AIM IN SPLATOON ON PRO PAD BY TAPING A WII REMOTE TO IT FOR REAL

  4. Hyrule Warriors at #3 makes me cringe a little bit… Same with W101 being on there, but not Tropical Freeze? Heh.

Sorry, but those two games are trash. I keep meaning to make a vid review about just how trashy W101 is. I love Platinum, but… that game… so many annoying flaws.

    1. pink0crystal0midbus

I have never played DKCTF. The Donkey Kong games have never appealed to me really. I’ll play it eventually just because it’s a “good game,” but it’s not really my thing. I prefer Mario platformers.

  5. Wow, they put Hyrule Warriors above 3D World.

I am pleasantly surprised. Good that they realize what a good game it is.

  6. Mario cart always sucked since the Snes there up 2 part 8 wow u idiots will buy anything with Mario in it lol.

    1. I agree MK wasn’t great after the SNES version but MK8 is superb. It’s just so much fun, but only the online mode.

But please, just because the Mario franchise is used to death it doesn’t mean that any Mario isn’t worth buying.

  7. Pingback: Mario Kart 8 è il gioco Wii U preferito dai giocatori inglesi | VG247.it

  8. This list isn’t really surprising outside of some of the ordering. There are only so many games out for the Wii U anyway.

  9. i don’t have a twitter account and I won’t have one, cause in twitter there are a lot of twats. I would have vote for mario kart 8 cause I have not yet play Bayonetta and wonderfull 101.
