We’ve all now got a good look at Star Fox Zero for the Wii U, the brain child of Shigeru Miyamoto in collaboration with Platinum Games. What do you think of the game art style? Because Miyamoto said that the visual style and the gameplay is the main point of the game, and was made of a cartoony nature on purpose. As most games now strive to look super realistic, he thinks they’re all starting to look the same, and presumably wanted Star Fox Zero to stand out that way. Question is, does it stand out for the right reasons or look weaker, as the article suggests?
In a press event Sunday, Miyamoto said that the point of Star Fox Zero is the gameplay and the visual style of the game, which is somewhat cartoony. It was made that way with a purpose. “A lot of games nowadays look so realistic that they all look the same,” Miyamoto said.
The famed designer is right–many casual gamers might have trouble telling the difference between a “Call of Duty” and “Battlefield” game. But Nintendo’s strategy also reflects that the Wii U has far less graphical horsepower than rival home consoles.

That art style is consume less Vram the Handpainted and work very well on wii u. Bud is more work to make. You paint every wall, Blick, mountain, metal, ship with that style. Call of duty or Assassin’s creed there use real texture in the world we live. Bud if you use that depends the pixels of the textures. You consume more ram at the end of the day.

If you won’t I will stand by my point. What Miyamoto is trying to say here is that he feels he should differentiate Star Fox’s artstyle because he views realism as a popular choice by developers. I don’t see a problem in applying realism to games like Star Fox when it is easily able to stand out from the crowd. How many games are there in the industry where you have a fox, bird and rabbit flying planes and shooting stuff up everywhere? Yeah. Miyamoto instead chose an artstyle that, similar to anonymous’s sentiments, doesn’t give me a good vibe. So, to reiterate, I feel that this s innovation simply for the sake of innovation, which as a consequence, didn’t benefit anyone.
And even if the artstyle one chooses is realistic, doesn’t necessarily mean they will look the same. Look at Uncharted versus Deus Ex. Do they look the same to you? Eh, why bother. Talking to a Nintendo fanboy like you is like talking to a wall

I didn’t think it was the “art style” that was disappointing to people. It was (and still is) the bland look of the game and the overall quality of the graphics.
Star Fox for Wii U can be cartoony. No one is arguing against that. But, it should be cartoony AND look like a beautiful game with the highest possible resolution in graphics and environments that looks ALIVE. Plus, the enemies look bland.
The level of detail that people were hoping to see is not there. That’s the problem, not cartoony graphics.

The game is a blatent rush job. They just don’t/didn’t (at the time of announcement) have enough games. I hope that – call me crazy – this game gets delayed and finished properly. Something I wanted for the new starfox is what blizzard did for star craft 2. You do your mission, after that go to your base, upgrade your stuff, interact with characters. A more long campaign would be nice as well.

After Star Fox skipped last gen, the graphics should be better than a Wii game. The fact the 3DS port of Star Fox 64 looks better than Star Fox Zero is kind of sad. And that was just a video without the 3D effect visible. Some, if not all, 3DS games look way better when the 3D effect is turned all the way up.

When W101, Pikmin 3, 3D World were unveiled on youtube people saw the difference. When Uncharted for PS4 was unveiled, people saw the difference. Yet slightly better graphics than Wii is bad. Then use youtube as bad quality to justify the way this game looks?

This is a substantial upgrade from SD to HD for Nintendo and they have done a lot to improve on that and they have done a lot to improve on their IPs they have.

Does mario kart 8 look realistic? No, but it still look fucking fantastic. Star fox looks like an half assed camecube game, the wii u is capable of much more. No the graphics are not the most important thing but it is a testament of how much ambition and love the developers put in their work.

I have fate that they are improving the graphics, they probably used SF64 3d as a basis for this game and started to work with finished stuff to faster development also the fact that SF64 is regarded as best of the series may have contributed to this. Then they started to update it and make new ideas with it.
I don’t mind the art style of the game, it has a cool look. What I mind is that the textures are low res, the models and low poly, and the game lacks the lighting and effects we’ve come to expect of Wii U titles. Nintendo shouldn’t rush this title. If it’s not ready for November, give it a few more months to polish.
That’s why “Xenoblade X” is launching in December and “Yoshi” is launching in the fall, I assume. If “Star Fox” isn’t ready for release, Nintendo will still have a couple of new games on the market.
Im thinking that maybe they have stages filled with countless enemy hordes and thats why they are keeping the graphics kinda low to maintain steady 60fps. Its the same tactic Platinum used with W101, although the character models werent that noticeable since they were so tiny in the screen. F-ZeroX vehicles had low amount of polygons too for the very reason. Im not dev or anything like that so please correct me if im wrong with this stuff.

I’m actually really happy with the way the game looks. If I saw a game where I’m playing as a fox driving a spaceship while talking to a bunny, frog, and a bird that are also flying spaceships while we all try to shoot down a wolf, a pig, and a lizard that are, too, flying spaceships try to pull off a realistic feel, I’d question the developers. This cartoon feel the game has going for it just makes sense.
Honestly, Shigeru, Mario Kart 8 is an example of a cartoony game that fleshes out its world and graphics, Starfox Zero so far doesn’t look as good as that, or Splatoon for that matter, what you need is detail and polish, and artstyle isn’t an excuse.

I dunno if it’s the art style I don’t like, or if it’s the quality. I go to arcades a lot, and this starfox does not look like a Wii U game. It looks & moves exactly like an arcade game. I didn’t like the detail in the footage they showed. Everything just looked like big HD blocks. This is the first time I’ve ever seen a game look like this on a console.

All I heard and read about the gameplay plus Samus “being there” is that it’s a front to window dress this last minute tact on garbage to fool morons like you and have you come to think that the fucking style looks completely off and that Samus was mentioned to be in it but is she playable? Is she a side character or just a cameo? You, again, have no fucking idea about it or Metroid/Samus itself.. This is like Star Fox Adventures + Other M + Aliens: Colonial Marines all over again.
The reason why Mario/Luigi & Paper Mario crossover was a surprise because nobody expected this and that the idea WORKS WELL since both are RPG games and they fit. People are a bunch of cry babies. Starfox Zero looks great to me. Starfox is NOT supposed to be realistic. Never was and never will be. also Miyamoto has stated before he CAN do realistic (Pikmin 3 comes close) but he doesn’t like to do realistic cause then it restricts your creativity.

I wasn’t really impressed with anything about this new Star Fox. It’s one of those games that people will have to play before the true impressions come through. It just looked same ol’, same ol’ to me.
It’s too slow. The game is just too slow with too few enemies. All of you saying they still have time to develop are wrong. They have no time. They cannot develop the game all the way up until December, and then get the game out in stores in December. No way. They will have to have development wrapped up by October, maybe November at the latest… Thats not enough time to fix the problems…
Although I do like how you can fly into the boss fights, but the boss had NO resistance. There was absolutely zero challenge. Enemy design is just so generic, they even reused the same enemies from previous Star Fox games..

BTW, Miyamoto is right, my PS3 came with The Last of Us which just looked like some generic photorealistic game to me so on my way home I stopped at EB to trade it in for credit towards my Pokémon X preorder. Ended up selling my PS3 after I got a good deal on a standalone Blu Ray player since I didn’t find myself playing Project Diva F and nothing else on PS3 caught my attention.
