The next Fire Emblem game will introduce same-sex marriage to Nintendo’s long-running tactical role-playing series. As you may already know, Fire Emblem Fates consists of two versions: Conquest and Birthright. In Conquest, a male main character can marry a male character – and a female main character can marry a female character in Birthright. Fire Emblem Fates launches tomorrow, June 25, in Japan and next year in North America and Europe.
“Fire Emblem Fates comes in two different versions, called the Conquest and Birthright editions,” Nintendo said in a statement. “In the U.S., Conquest and Birthright will both be sold separately, as is already the case in Japan. For those who have purchased either the Conquest or Birthright edition, a third edition will be made available as downloadable content at a later stage. Details on how the three storylines will be made available in other regions will be announced at a later date.
“In the Conquest edition of the game, there is a male character that the game’s player may have his/her male main character marry after they bond in battle. Similarly, the Birthright edition features a female character that a female main character may marry after bonding in battle. Both of the aforementioned characters can be encountered in the third edition of the game.
“We believe that our gameplay experiences should reflect the diversity of the communities in which we operate and, at the same time, we will always design the game specifications of each title by considering a variety of factors, such as the game’s scenario and the nature of the game play. In the end of course, the game should be fun to play. We feel that Fire Emblem Fates is indeed enjoyable to play and we hope fans like the game.”

It means the world to me. The fact that I can relate to it, seeing changes like this made to video games, it gives me hope that one day, same sex marriage will be something no one will bat an eye lid about. Because someday it might be treated as normal. Representation is so powerful. My little nephew is partially deaf and has to wear hearing aids, and when we showed him that Hawkeye from the Marvel universe wore them too, he cracked his nut! I find it fantastic that LBGTQA+ issues are finding their way into mainstream so people can learn about them and understand a bit better. I think this is fantastic!
I see how you feel and why this is important to you. My personal opinion Is that treating such things as same sex marriage as something else, as a small minority of “other” people is what really marginalizes them. In other words, seeing things as “oh, now gays have some recognition/rights” is a discrimination.
That would be the case is homosexuals weren’t discriminated already. The entertainment industry acts as a mirror to our views as a society, and adding representation in a natural, non-tokenish way functions as a big “fuck you” to the people opposed to same-sex relationships. It’s a very important step in the right direction and kind of a political statement by Nintendo/Intelligent Systems, one that I didn’t think they would make.
I can agree that it is kind of a political statement, but I can’t say I didn’t expect this from them, as they have expressed the direction they are willing to take related to such a topic before as shown here

I think so. I’m gay, and I was hoping I’d finally be able to have my avatar character marry a guy. So this is pretty cool, it matters to the people who want their avatars to feel like themselves a little more. Sure there’s only one character to choose from, but it’s a step in the right direction.

Wario also makes a cameo in one episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, with his counter part Waluigi. In the episode where Mario and Luigi go back to plumber school, Wario and Waluigi are also present, but have no speaking parts.
I see, I was just intrigued, because following the story of Wario land 4, wario gets his hands on lots of gold by treasure hunting. Also based on his WarioWare spinnoffs, he seems to have a passion for game development. He must be a multitalented guy, that Wario.

What the hell kind of question are you asking. It answers itself.
When two characters love each ither in the game they form a relationship and power each other up. You won’t get any kids out of the relationship, but you can get a stronger partnership.
Then it’s not “marriage”. Marriage must be open to children by definition (certain restrictions apply for example a woman unable to have children may marry and adopt), as marriage and the family are the fundamental building blocks of society, creating lived and educated children to continue society’s existence. Any bond not open to children can’t be marriage (again certain circumstances apply). SO, for this game to include a gay marriage as an option for players gives an unnatural, confusing message to children who are still growing into who they are meant to be.
Can we agree that these serious topics are not what we need in a Nintendo game?

During the 9 months of conception, we get the certain enzymes & stuff that eventually decides whether we’ll be male or female. Sometimes things go wrong with this process. What? You think being blind or deaf is the only problems people can be born with? No. It doesn’t work that way. If blindness, deafness, short stature, giant stature, OCD, autism, etc can be the result of things going wrong, why should being born with the male body while your mind is still inherently female be the exception? And if you want to bring religion into this, either God can make mistakes, like the very people he modeled after Himself, namely us humans, or God purposely caused these people to be born the way that they are.

Options like this really allow people to play how they want. I’ve always loved this about The Sims games. And it’s optional, it’s not like you HAVE to make your character(s) gay in any of these games.

I wonder if this will make it over to the US though. FE IS rated as a kid’s game, & USA IS primarily a Christian nation (Heck the West itself is primarily lol), & this IS Nintendo we’re talking about. It’s why so much other things get censored. If they usually censor crap like dresses & ages, I find it hard to believe they’re gonna introduce homosexuality into one of their flagship titles for American kids. I can’t see them taking the risk. If this transfers over I’ll be shocked.

This press release also included info that FE Fates would be distributed in two versions here in the U.S. with a third released digitally. I am getting so excited for this game! I see people say oh great just another way to milk the cow like Pokemon does. But I don’t see it that way. I see these games having a much larger scale than what we’ve been given from Fire Emblems before. I see this as more of the Sega Saturns Shining Force 3, where you play each forces side of it and then the third when they come together to face a much greater threat. I’m really hoping this will be similar to that!
What do you know. Nintendo is stepping into the 21st Century. No if only “Star Fox Zero” would… I just can’t help but burn that game’s graphics at every opportunity.

I wish it wasn’t such a limited option, but Nintendo’s on the right side of history here and I’m incredibly happy about it. A small step is better than no step at all, and I absolutely commend Nintendo for being progressive in this manner. In a perfect world this wouldn’t even be a conversation because people wouldn’t use religion to oppose love and bully others, but this is far from a perfect world so conversations like this are necessary.

I’m not against same sex marriage, but stop shoving gay relationships everywhere because it’s not everywhere.
This feature could be a political statement. But in all honesty, they probably did it just for fanservice and wider audience appeal (like Pheonix Mode, ‘sigh’).
All this fuss for what an option, I thought we were consumers. To tell you the truth I don’t like this at all but it is Nintendo’s game and I have a choice, so I will not be getting it. To all the people who like it, enjoy, I guess.
Nintendo if you are getting with the times please don’t stop there. Your console and handheld should have sufficient power, to play your best games and 3rd party games. You should work with 3rd party devs to get exclusive games and Dlc. Your online service should be on the level or higher than your competitors. Your eshop should be robust and have nindies, and all legacy consoles. Your controllers should be ergonomic and have the basics built in. Your players accounts on different systems should be a unified one. You should make more, gritty, mature, epic games that have intriguing stories. Nintendo give the gimmicks a rest plz, let people talk in your games, stop holding hands, let your console and handheld work in tandem seamlessly, don’t let games get lost on one system, welcome voice chat, don’t let games get lost in one country. Wow I’m going and take a rest.
