Here’s Super Mario 64 Recreated In Unreal Engine 4

A talented individual has managed to recreate a small part of the much-loved Super Mario 64 using the cutting edge Unreal Engine 4. As you can see from the video it does look visually impressive, but somehow it loses the charm of the original. The demo was created by YouTube user aryoksini who has remade a number of other titles on his channel. Here’s what he had to say about his latest creation.

Here is Mario running in Unreal Engine 4, all the environment assets were taken from the Unreal marketplace, all the character actions were scripted using blueprints only, all animations were re-created from scratch as well as the PBR ready textures

Thanks, White Eagle

        1. All the environments are demonstration projects from epic games. You can download them from the epic games lancher. I think it’s only a demo for the Mario controlls.

        2. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

          >>>Mario games are not supposed to be realistic and it would take away its charm>>>

      1. Right, except for one. The whole point of the video was to demonstrate MARIO though. The backgrounds were premade and just thrown in there to have him walking on and stuff as you can see.

        1. If that was the case then Mario didn’t even look that good, it was mostly lighting, but he looked dulled with little detail. The background looked beautiful though.

      2. Yah… I watched this a few days ago and and all I was thinking was that this doesn’t really seem like the typical Mario environment… but it looked more like a Metroid environment. I mean, just replace Mario in this demo with Samus and you got yourself the real Metroid fans have been waiting for. The fans might blow it up to the point where Nin might see it and learn.

        1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

          >>>Not much Metroid either, looked more like a Resident Evil/Fable or something>>>

    1. It doesn’t look great at all when it comes to Mario. Mario looks awful and the worlds it showed were just plain boring even with all those details.

  1. Makes you wonder. But I honestly like Nintendo’s style much better. A galaxy 3 on “Nintendo’s” updated graphics would blow any of the unreal engine shit out of the water.. I dont want a realistic looking Mario game, thx.

  2. I'm a Boss Ass Bitch

So this goes to show that Mario can still look like himself without altering a single expect of his design in the most realistic fucking environments ever.

    1. And Nintendo is sometimes too foolish to realize how much of an evolution these powerful engines can bring to their franchises. Imagine Metroid Prime Trilogy completely rebuild in HD looking THIS beautiful and detailed. It would give even Halo a run for its money. :3

  3. Looks like a Mario game that Sony would make. REALISTIC GRAPHICS, DARK UNDERGROUND TUNNELS, EDGY SPECIAL EFFECTS, that kind of thing

    1. Thank God they didn’t make it! The world looks wonderful, but Mario sticks out like a sore thumb. It’s clear he doesn’t belong.

Now the castle in a realistic Zelda game would be gold.

While plenty of the environments don’t fit Mario, I still say this; Nintendo I wanted to play this game on my Wii U. Why didn’t we get this?

  5. Graphics look amazing but it looks nothing like wt a Mario game should ever be. It looks like they took the world of elder scrolls and just placed Mario in it looks awkwardly funny lol

  6. This made me think of a concept that Nintendo never tried (surprisingly), but would make an AWESOME Mario game. CLAYMATION. Remember those clay model Nintendo Power magazine covers? I always thought that a full-blown claymation Mario game would be awesome. But for some reason, Nintendo is more obsessed with paper.

  7. Are you guys really that ignorant? The point of this little demonstration was to show off MARIO. These are just premade backgrounds you dolts. Why do you people have to be so goddamn negative? Looks like there are only a few intelligent people here on this discussion but the rest of you ought to be ashamed. Plus, the Wii U could handle these types of graphics similarly, I’m sure. It would be amazing if we could get another Super Mario 64 remake that looks cleaner for the Wii U or NX. That means if Nintendo took full charge over the development, they will keep it cartoony AND provide realistic or lifelike graphics.

  8. I gotta say it looks freaking awesome. Mario could work in a realistic environmental, although the style of the architecture would have to have a whimsical look to it. That sort of lighting and special effects could work well with Mario games. It sort of works in Mario Kart 8, the lighting is gorgeous in MK8 versus the flat lighting in Super Smash Bros Wii U.
I doubt the NX will come anywhere near close to what the Unreal Engine graphics has, at beast we’ll be seeing something akin to the current Xbox One or PS4. :(

  9. that’s pretty crazy stuff but the environments should of been from the actual game I want to see what the castle would look like with unreal engine and Bowser that would be amazing

  10. Cool. But that world that looked like Super Mario 64 HD has a godawful art design which I hope Nintendo never uses it.

    It reminds me of Memelands.
