Splatoon Is Now The Best-Selling Wii U Game Of All-Time On Japanese eShop

Splatoon has proved to be a popular Wii U hit for Nintendo. The ink based shooter has performed well in the United States, the UK, and Japan, based on the official sales data we have received. We have learned today that it is currently the highest-selling Wii U eShop game of all-time in Japan, beating the likes of Dragon Quest X, Mario Kart 8 and Bayonetta 2. The news was announced via Nintendo’s official Japanese website which has a dedicated section for Wii U eShop charts and states that Splatoon is now the all-time best-seller.

Thanks, Idlewild

  1. That’s pretty neat, it sounds like Splatoon is definitely going places! I’ll get it at some point, but it’s not quite as high on my list as some of the other Wii U titles like Mario 3D World or MK8.

      1. Yes, not yet because the price for those never seems to go down. For the Wii U I have
        Hyrule Warriors
        Nintendo Land
        Sonic Lost World
        Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric
        Super Smash Bros Wii U
        Scribblenauts Unlimited
Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure
        Transformers Prime
        Metroid
        Super Metroid
        Golden Sun
Super Mario Bros The Lost Levels.

I typically don’t buy very expensive games unless it’s something like Super Smash Bros. Other than that, I buy 2 big games a year. This year I aim to buy the Kirby Anniversary Collection as my big one for Christmas. Next year, Mario 3D World could make it, but there are a lot of top contenders to think about like the big DK game for the Wii or the new Kirby return to Dreamland game. I will certainly get both of the Mario games at some point though.

          1. A pretty low one, at least as far as video games go. I do watch films at the theater quite often, which limits my video game spending. I also love to go for bargain sales. Just the other day, I got 10 games for 26 dollars at Gamestop, which was a steal. (Buy 2 get 1 free sale) 5 Wii Games (Club Penguin Game Day, Block Party, Rec Room Games, Monkey Mischief, and Family Party) and 5 PS3 Games. (NBA 2K10, 12, 13, NHL 12, Top Spin 4) I know that the games don’t sound great, but at that low price, I couldn’t refuse them!

            1. You have weird taste in games man lol. Best one on that list was probably top spin, and I don’t like tennis so what does that tell you. But hey it;s your oney and you should spend it however the hell you want.

              1. Thanks man, I do also get how odd the games look. I go to Gamestop every month because their Wii section is constantly switching and now’s the best time to grab all of the cheaply priced ones. I’ve gotten dozens of games that I’ve never even heard of and it’s been quite the experience. I’m a big fan of all sport titles minus Golf myself so I make it my mission to buy them all.

            2. I have a spare DK tropical freeze download code that I’m trying to get rid of. $20 and it’s yours

              1. I’ll pass on the offer, but thanks anyway. I’m still going to try and gun for the physical release at some point. Luckily, the 3DS remake of the other game has lowered the price for Country Returns so I may be getting that in the near future.

          1. DKTF was way better than returns, first off it was actually hard, better graphics of course, better controllers, two player, much better level designs, and the list just keeps going…

            1. It’s more balanced but in terms of feel and gameplay, it’s almost unchanged especially when you’re hoping to play as any of the 4 characters along without DK piggybacking them to use their gimped abilities. If it did, it would’ve been miles better.

          2. The controls are definitely better on the 3DS, but I prefer to get the games on a home console whenever possible because then I play it with my brother. I also give my cousin a demo of the games that I buy so he can see if he likes it enough to buy and I do the same for my parents as I try to keep them as knowledgeable on the video games as possible. I always have them play at least one level of every game that I buy and it’s quite fun, but they wouldn’t enjoy using such a small screen. Otherwise, the 3DS would definitely be a sound bet, but I typically just use it for exclusives.

        1. You should take a look at Metroid Prime Trilogy, one of the best games/collection out there but eShop has it for $20 so all three solid Metroid Prime games, it’s a steal and trust me, it’s the one game that will NOT disappoint you even if you’re a Metroid fan or not. :3 But the question is, do you have a Wii Remote/Nunchuk for it?

          1. I do have the Wii Remote/Nunchuk combo although I don’t use it quite as often nowadays, I dug it out recently because I got some new Wii games. I actually own the original Metroid Prime for the Gamecube, but never got to check out the sequels. I have heard that Dark Samus is awesome and that the third game is incredible. 20 at the Eshop eh? I remember when the hardcover version was outrageously priced. It’s tempting, but I still prefer to go for the physical version unless it’s really not possible. I am a big Metroid fan though and own most of the main titles! (Super Metroid, Metroid, Metroid II, Zero Mission, Prime 1, and Fusion so far!)

            1. Yeah. Prime 2 & 3 are great sequels and yes, Dark Samus kicks ass, too bad he’s not playable in Smash Bros. but Dark Pit got the spot which is BS since DP is a clone while DS is not.

Yeah the hardcover is and was expensive. Lucky for me, I found a brand new copy of Prime Trilogy last year at a Walmart store and never knew I would find it ever again. Never buy any of those hard to find games like Prime Trilogy and Xenoblade on Wii from GameStop. They’re con artists at overpricing used games. I would recommend just buying the Trilogy from eShop for $20 which is super cheap.

              1. Dark Samus is awesome and I always use the alt when playing Samus. I agree that it’s a shame that Dark Samus was not included in Smash Bros. At least change the alt like with the Koopalings. Hopefully Nintendo patches at least that in at some point. 20 is a steal so I’ll definitely keep it in mind, the lowest price for physical is around double that so it’s certainly a test.

        2. You got SB Rise of Lyric? The money you paid for that could have/should have been put towards another good Wii U game like Splatoon.

I’ll turn a blind eye to getting Sonic Lost World because I too thought it would go well and… it didn’t. In fact, it was terrible.

          1. Well, actually, my brother got that one on launch day along with Lost World on its launch and the same for Hyrule Warriors. The only big game I bought right away was Super Smash Bros. Still, I think Sonic Boom is a little underrated and likewise with Lost World. They certainly aren’t as good as the classics or the old modern (Sonic DX-Sonic 2006) but they were decent enough. Maybe not as good as Splatoon, but they were fun to get through.

        3. Mario Kart 8 and now Splatoon are a must for Wii U owners. I have limited budget as well but half your list wouldn’t be in mine… XD

Anyway in my country First Party titles are usually the last you’ll see a price drop.

          1. Quality vs Quantity for sure and likewise, first party titles take forever. In Splatoon’s case, the price should drop soon, but a game like Mario 3D World will likely never drop and I’ll just have to take the plunge at some point. So many good games to get, so little time!

    1. If you have such a low budget for games, you should go for PC gaming dude… Games are way cheaper, sites like Kinguin allows you to buy brand new games for half the price already.

      1. That’s true, but I could never really get into PC gaming. Maybe I’m just really old school at heart. I prefer to only own physical games and I make sure to only buy them if the original cover is intact. (At least for home console games) It would just be hard to stop console gaming.

      1. Not just that but stops all the gimmick BS and directly compete PS4 in terms of ease of programming and power but since they said it’s not, there’s almost guarantee that it’ll repeat the same Wii U nonsense again.

          1. Remember Wii U’s early days of third party promises and “partnerships” that never quite happened? I surely didn’t forget not believe anymore BS about it now. History will indeed repeat itself like Wii U repeating 3DS/GameCube’s disastrous launch.

        1. “but since they said it’s not”

If by ‘they’ you mean Nintendo, that’s only rumors from 1 twitter account that is only for somewhat reputable software rumors, but not hardware.

Nintendo has not said anything officially.

    1. But it didn’t reach MK8’s success caliber. It took Splatoon to reach 1 million worldwide in 4 weeks due to some leaks of lesser content/options and lack of voice chat for friends plus short 3 minute gameplay time did cost the game some sales confidence which if it was more than ready with all of those features, then it would’ve done just as good as MK8’s 1.2 million in its first 2 days.

        1. It’s not just a new IP, but one of the ONLY games WiiU owners have to buy. Wow. Can noone see this is a success built on lack of 3rd party AND 1st party support?

People have to buy splatoon to have a remotely fun and new game on the system??

So again, it will feed Nintendo the wrong ideas, it’s a “success” and Nintendo will learn nothing. I’m so glad I’m disengaging from all this bullshit.

          1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

            >>>If people stop buying the greater games as well, they won’t learn anything either and will continue to create new IPs based on the civilian formula>>>

          2. I like it, yes, it lacks features, but dont blame me for liking something, and yes, there are no enough games for wiiu, and it’s really frustating indeed, therefore I will have a play4 next month

      1. Keep bleeding, son. Are you still crying because it took 4 weeks to reach one million?. It’s a “miracle” since babies like you cried for the lack of voice chat. Your parents should sign your ass in the army, so, at least you will learn to be a man… or to take it as it comes LOL.

    2. But they had something apealing to sell this time around, too. Advertising the Wii U, they made the same mistake as when advertising the 3DS earlier: Fokusing on gimmicks no one care about (the public). The GamePad with the Wii U, and the 3D with the 3DS…

  2. Nintendo really needs to add regional matchmaking to Splatoon. I’m so sick and tired of playing ranked battles almost exclusively with Japanese players.

    1. What’s wrong with playing with Japanese players, how will it be different then playing with non, splatfest is regional, so I guess that’s your chance

      1. lag K.Os happens a lot when I’m playing with Japanese. I splat them first, swim like a squid a few feet away and then SPLAT, I die by the guy I just killed.

      2. More often than not there is a noticeable amount of lag when playing with Japanese players. Plus, considering most of the lobby is full of them, I can never make friends with any good players. In online games if I run into good players I might try to add them as a friend and play with them. I could do it with Japanese players, but we couldn’t communicate. It’d e pointless. Overall though it’s how it affects gameplay. I hate getting splatted after I’m around a corner out of harms way.

  3. Cool maybe Nintendo will give more in making new Ip’s and try to keep the Wii U alive longer and delay the NX longer

    1. There’s nothing left for it as far as I can see and as for the Zelda excuse, NX is gonna get it like Twilight Princess ported on Wii which was once slated for 2005 release only to be delayed a year for that system.

      1. Please shut up. You are the whiniest little bitch on this site.

        Wooly World
        Xenoblade X
        Star Fox
        Mario Maker
        Fatal Frame
        SMT x FE
        Mario Tennis

I’m not even going to count that Animal Crossing abomination.
That’s 7 exclusive games coming within the next year, 5 of which almost guaranteed to be awesome.
So, yeah, there are things left for it, you self entitled brat. If you are just going to bitch and moan, why come to the website? All you try to do is shove your bias and ignorant opinion down everyone’s throats. It’s annoying, and you’re a pest.

        1. Throw out Mario Tennis because the 3DS just got it not too long ago and it’s still the same shit with Mega Mushroom..wow. What a fantastic innovation. B/

Star Fox Zero..or should I call it “Star Fox 64 HD; remake #2” As for the others, already knew about and already lost a fuck to give. Do that only makes it 5 games within a year’s time and nothing else. Only 5 fucking games in more than 12 months. Wii U has already lost its steam.

  4. That’s great! This game really deserves it, especially after the August update which will fix all the minor issues I do have with the game. I just finished playing a match actually…

  5. Splaton is for gay little kids. Gay little kids wearing bonnets and giving each other handjobs with rattles. Splaton is about Gay Sex and also it is about Butt Sex. I will not buy Splaton.

    1. Is there something wring with being gay? I enjoyed the game very well, unaffected by my age and sexual preference.

        1. It’s not. What they should do to fix that embarrassment for a “Metroid Prime” game is too change the style completely and ditch the “Prime” title and get rid of that Blast Ball garbage and turn it into an actual multiplayer death match making like Prime Hunters.

          1. Eh, they don’t have to do both, just one or the other. If they want to keep Blast Ball, they NEED to drop the Prime name because that isn’t what Prime is about. If they want to keep the Prime name, then they need to drop Blast Ball. And in both cases, the graphics and style need to reflect the Prime Trilogy, because right now it’s not even close.

            1. I really don’t mind the idea of playing as Fed soldiers aside from Samus for once but the chibi style and that stupid ass mini game demo instead of showing how its co-op play will function is merely a pathetic and misguided attempt to bring back the desperate fans back after Other M nearly destroyed the series 5 years ago. Now it’s doing the opposite, probably on purpose to kill off Metroid in a terrible why as how Capcom killed Megaman.

              1. While I don’t think it’s on purpose, it’s crystal clear that the damage is done and at this point may be irreversible. If ever Metroid was going to go the way of the dodo, this was NOT what I and the community wanted it to go down like.

I do agree with you that seeing things from the eyes of Fed troopers is not inherently bad, but the fact that the game has a Mega Blocks/bright style to it that deliberately goes against Prime’s established style, coupled with the recent confirmation that no real Metroid game like we’ve been begging for is in development for any console, current or future, makes this game a lost cause to true fans. I for one will not be buying this in its current form- if it makes a switch to a darker style like Prime is known for, I may get it (used), but seeing how Ninty seems to operate nowadays, it seems a fool’s dream.

        2. Wow. What are you? 12? (if so, it’s totally cool and I apologize)
Federation Force has nothing to do with Metroid. It’s an expansion on the NintendoLand Version of Metroid for Family fun. So yeah. Enjoy.

    1. Except like, all the other Wii U games? Your analogy doesn’t work. Think about it for a second.

      1. The analogy is that compared to Xbox One and PS4 this is hardly an achievement, the only competition Splatoon had was other first party titles of which are old hat now and indie garbage.
I do hope Nintendo continues to go forward with Splatoon as a new IP, but again being the best selling game on a console barely pushing 10mil with no third party support isn’t some glorious party.

        1. You’re a special kind of retard huh?
“Best selling Wii U game of ALL TIME on Japanese eShop”.
I do wonder how many PS4 and xbone games has sold on Japanese eShop?
Your analogy could work if you could count all the retail games on eShop by your one set of fingers.

          1. I’m retarded because you lack reading comprehension? Let me break it down into baby chunks for you to easily digest then; Being the best selling game on a console that is doing poorly WORLDWIDE means jack shit. “Best selling WiiU game in Japan” against what? There is no other significant competition on the WiiU when you compare the selection of games on the WiiU to it’s competitors. You are seriously the only idiot who cannot understand this.

        2. I understood what you were trying to do, but it’s an awful analogy. The race for ‘best selling games in Wii U Japanese eshop’ DOES NOT include Xbone and Ps4 games. Splatoon won its race, against lots of other games that were trying hard for the same thing. Learn to logic.

          1. Please read my other comment because I’m not going to bother copy pasting it back here, and again even if I were just talking about WiiU games instead of comparing the SELECTION OF GAMES on all threee platforms the analogy still works because what other shitty WiiU games did Splatoon have to compete with at the time? Mario Kart? SSB all ever green titles with established franchises already and past their prime time? Fucking Kirby and the Rainbow Curse? Were there even any other physical WiiU titles launching when Splatoon came out? Is it that hard to understand that this game essentially has little to no competition on the WiiU? Especially if you compare the selection of WiiU games to PS4 and XB1 games, which is what my analogy meant. No one is jumping for the best selling WiiU game compared to PS4 and XB1. This is not hard to understand.

  6. Well that’s because Nintendo made the right move to advertise the hell out of this game. No surprise there.

  7. I’m on the fence with this game, is it really good, I wanna buy it, but I don”t know, It seems to bored pretty fast, what do you guys think? Is it really good? Like a must buy?

    1. Yes Splatoon is a must have Nintendo game, it’s one of the best games on the Wii U, and one of the best 3rd person shooters period.

      1. Also most people who claim it gets boring really fast usually don’t even own the game, and some are just MS and Sony (I actually like Sony just not their fanboys) Fanboys who can’t play a game that doesn’t have blood and gore all over it.

        1. Nah. I have some pretty reliable / unbiased people I follow in Miiverse. You’re just part of the half of the camp that is die-hard into, which is fine, but from what I’ve heard so far, it’s not worth spending $60 USD for me.

      2. One of the only AAA games to be released in months.
Yeah. Pretty sure it’s amazing when your new-game selection is so fucking scarce.

    2. Don’t buy it for the single-player experience- you will be sorely disappointed otherwise as it’s quite easy and is over after maybe 3-4 hours (Final Boss is stressful as hell though). The online battles are where it’s at, so if you have good connection and like the PvP scene, you’ll like this.

It IS best played in spurts right now though, until more content gets added. But it’s worth the purchase ATM.

    3. I’m still waiting. Half the people you talk to are all “must buy!!” Andhalf are already bored and moving on.

I’d hold off and see if the hype train is still strong in a few months. I’m also waiting for a sale.

I played Mass Effect 3 on my Wiiu this weekend… Best online coop shooter hands down. Beautiful graphics, gameplay, voice chat… I have no reason to buy Splatoon.

      1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

-Please refrain from further Electron promotion, thank you for your forced cooperation-

        1. Does it make you feel better that the port was done by Straight Right, not EA? ;D – And They did a crazy-amazing job on the port. It was the definitive version of ME3, the other versions had to catch up via patches.

It was a launch game, and people still play it. It’s just crazy fun.

              1. Are you TRYING to incur this guy’s wrath? Even theorizing it is enough to overheat his anger chip.

                1. “Super Mario Galaxy 3 Limited Edition $69.99. Includes Luigi and Princess Peach DLC.” Lmao.

    4. At times it gets pretty repetitive because of the lack of content. It is really fun though, and I think the game will be a lot of fun later on when more content releases. So I’d say wait, but I guess that depends on what you want out of it.

People can try to say I don’t own the game, or aren’t giving it enough of a chance, but I hit level 20 and I have A- rank and climbing, so I think I’ve played this game enough to be able to give it my own review by now.

Some people might also get really bothered by Splatfest, it’s fun, but that’s about it. Since Nintendo killed the competitive aspect of it, by how they determine the winner. Popularity should never be a factor in any competitive game, but it is in Splatfest. Whoever picks one team the most, basically has the highest chance of wining every single time. It isn’t skill based so much, which I think sucks, you can win more but still lose just because the other team had more players.

The game does a lot of things right as well, it has some cools weapons, a unique aesthetic, and it’s core gameplay is really smooth and fun. So if you can look past the lack of content at the moment, and you aren’t as competitive as me to care that much about Splatfest or needing something like voice chat, then you’ll probably be fine with it.

I’m good with it mostly, I just think it could have released with a little more content than it has now. That’s honestly my biggest gripe.

      1. Thank you guys, I think that I’ll wait for the August Update to decide, but you guys helped me to clear my mind on this :D

      2. Not saying it’s hugely important, but does it have local modes, like if you have someone over? Like, with Black OPS 2, my brother can come over, he uses the pro controler and TV, I used the gamepad as my screen, and we do the Zombie kill’in thing.

        Anything for local on Splatoon?

        1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

          >>>As far as I know the only thing local is that 2 player training mode where you pop balloons>>>

  8. thestrangablog is stupid af. You’re really comparing sales of a new IP to a FRANCHISE thats built its fanbase over 8 games? gtfo. And if u aren’t “supporting” Nintendo anymore, why the fuck r u still here?

  9. Stranga get yo sorry ass outta here and you keep bitching about what nintendo does and does not do and wait until the nx is revealed then say what you have to say but then again you said you were done with nintendo months ago so why are you still here lol and why do you keep whining about federation force and I bet when the new 3d metroid game comes out you will be kissing nintendo ass talking about this is the metroid game I wanted and have been waiting for lol

      1. DO IT! It would be sinful not to own both those games.

Download their soundtracks while you’re at it!

  10. For a game that was marketed as an “online game” from Nintendo, they really need to get their act together with connection issues. Lag and connection errors mid match. I noticed as well, less people from my friend list have sorta stopped playing it. Their ain’t much variety online unfortunately.

    1. There wasn’t even a way to join friends’ games during Splatfest! I had three friends on Team Cats with me; we could have been an unstoppable unit if we could have all joined the same matches.

YES to putting effort into improving online functionality- I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve yelled “WHAT!?” after getting splatted by something I didn’t even see only to see it was the player I splatted moments ago apparently ran over me with the Krak-on Roller.

      1. My cat team was unstoppable, luckily. I loved that team, I did not lose a single match during Splatfest for the 2 hours I played, because of how good our teamwork was. Wish I could play with those guys everyday.

Too bad we still lost because of the retarded popularity part.

        1. That would really dampen the fun for me. :/ (Popularity = Win or Lose) – thanks for your reviews!

    2. I quit smash cause lag was horrible. Not interested in supporting a game where lag is a thing. It’s free tho! Get what cha pay for!

      1. Yea, peer to peer sucks. I had to explain this to someone yesterday, and how I’d gladly pay Nintendo if it meant they’d use servers for something other than matchmaking for once. As so many people kept trying to compare Nintendo’s online to Sony and Microsoft’s, saying it was just as good… My ass it is. They don’t use peer to peer for every god damn online game they have… And with the limited amount of online games Nintendo does have, why they can’t afford more servers with all the money they keep stored away doesn’t make much sense, other than being cheap.

And that is why peer to peer sucks, because if the host disconnects, everyone in that match gets kicked out.

Which some could consider even worse in Splatoon, because of the fact there is no regional lobby. And a lot of people are already complaining about getting paired with Japanese players only to disconnect, it can be very awful in ranked matches also as I’ve noticed there are very few players in A rank, that aren’t Japanese.

        1. Agreed. And Microsoft has had some great deals on their online pricing. I’ve seen as low as $40-60 a year. Like $5 a month. I’d totally pay that for reliable online infrastructure.

Oh well. The WiiU games I play online run smooth. BLOPS2, MH4 and ME3, so I’m mostly good. :D

      2. Get better internet. Smash U works amazing online for me, unless I’m playing someone who clearly has a very shitty connection speed.

They EXPLAINED that before the game even released. Dumbfucks everywhere in these comments, 24/7.

  11. I still don’t understand why English-speaking people who write these articles in English feel the need to add a hyphen between ‘all’ and ‘time’. This hyphen doesn’t need to be here and shouldn’t be here.

So a little English lesson from a French guy here:
When it’s not preceded by ‘of’, you use a hyphen to make it an adjective (“my all-time favorite game”), but when it is, it means you’re using “all time” the normal, nominal way (“my favorite game of all time”).

When you say “here of all places” or “you of all people”, do you use a hyphen?

  12. Pingback: Splatoon: titolo per Wii U più venduto sull'eShop giapponese

  13. This game will and up selling over 5 million by the time the wii u is completely done. It’s just what happens to major nintendo games because it’s very doubtful a splatoon 2 will happen on the wiiu and it’s unlikely another online shooter by nintendo will out shine splatoon it’s the only long term option even after nx is out wiiu will still be on store shelves for a few years.

  14. I just got my copy of Splatoon and how I wish I got it on release day (ran out of copies). I didn’t get to play during Splatfest, but I really wish I did.

Nintendo should bring this to the next console along with Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong.

Personally it is worth the $60 because unlike other titles, I get to enjoy the game and have fun even if it takes you hours of online gaming which I don’t usually do even with Mario Kart 8.

Kudos to Nintendo, but I do hope this don’t get to their heads and forget the real problem with the Wii U.

    1. It isn’t worth $60 right now, fun is a huge factor in gaming, but when you start talking about cost there needs to be more factored in than just fun. I can have fun playing Pong, doesn’t mean it’s worth $60 in this day and age.

You didn’t miss much for Splatfest either, I mean it’s fun, the plaza is cute in all, but if you were going into Splatfest thinking of it competitively, than you’ll be sorely disappointed in the fact that voting for a team is more important than your chosen teams overall skill.

You could beat the other team with more wins, and still lose because the other team had more votes. So I don’t see much of a point in Splatfest, I guess just casual fun? But you can already do that in Splatoon’s regular online modes…

      1. Popularity will obviously have a role in selecting the winner, because the amount of people on each side could offset the amount of wins. I had a few matches where team cat actually consisted of dog players. Anyway, get over it. It’s a video game.
