Sega Says They Want To Regain Customers Trust And That They Learned A Lot From Atlus

Sega isn’t quite the company it used to be, as it is now focussing mainly on mobile and PC development. A far cry from the past. However, Sega CEO and president Hajime Satomi, has explained in Famitsu that they have learned a lot from Atlus regarding business decisions and the quality of the games offered in their portfolio. Satomi says there’s clearly a market for Japanese games in the west. Let’s hope this focus on quality leads to success, as it should.

“As far as the Western market goes, we learned a lot from Atlus,” continues Satomi. “If we can make a title with proper quality, I believe there’s a good chance for it to do well even in the West for players that like to play Japanese games.”

Next, Famitsu asks what are they’re looking to focus on more when it comes to home console games.

“I’ve been talking to the employees about how we should start putting serious consideration into quality from this point on,” responds Satomi. “Especially in North America and Europe, where it’s always been more of a focus on schedules, I believe that if we can’t maintain quality, it would be better to not release anything at all.” Satomi continues, “We did our best to build a relationship of mutual trust with older fans of Sega, but looking back, there’ve been some titles that have partially betrayed that [trust] in the past 10 years.”

“Sega in the ‘90s was known for its ‘brand, but after that, we’ve lost trust, and we were left with nothing but ‘reputation. For this reason, we’d like to win back the customers’ trust, and become a ‘brand,’ once again.”

Famitsu asks if it’s safe to expect a high quality title to be released sometime in the second half of this year.

“Since we’re seriously considering quality, I can’t make that promise for the time being, but I believe we will announce something for home console at Tokyo Game Show,” says Satomi.

        1. Panzer dragoon, a proper sequel to nights (forgot thar wii disgrace), a Street of Rage made by platinum would also be so sweet or maybe an Altered Beast by platinum. A new instalment in the shining force serie (recovering it classic gameplay forget about that crappy ps2 game) a proper phantasy star game NOT ONLINE just a turn based rpg with a massive plot and world to explore… A new jet set radio with a bigger open world and more diverse missions, a new outrun or crazy taxi…
Sega have enough ips to be an awesome brand, it also should create new ones.
Remember that there was a time when sega could look right in the face of nintendo from the same hight.
Im not english so dont bash me for my grammar. If you dont understand what i meant please ask politelly.

          1. Christ, Platinum gets a lot of love these days. Franchises I’d love to see resurrected include Shinobi, Streets of Rage, and…Alex Kidd (fuck yeah). But I think Nintendo is keeping Platinum pretty busy these days. In terms of large, established developers, I don’t know who would do it, but I bet there would be a lot of indie devs chomping at the bit to take one of them on.

            1. How about Skies of Arcadia? Give it to Atlus, I’m sure they can think of something to continue Skies of Arcadia.

  1. Now if only Nintendo could learn from someone else how to please fans. Oh wait they have fanboys who will like ANYTHING they put out, so why should they even try…

    1. This doesn’t even have anything to do with Nintendo. It’s all about SEGA. If your comment was on an article about Iwata or Reggie, or anybody else at Nintendo speaking about getting the trust back, then I would understand why this comment is here.

    2. Right, because Nintendo released great games like Sonic 06, Boom, Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, Aliens Colonial Marines for these last 10 years and Sega released Kid Icarus Uprising, Mario Galaxy, Donkey Kong Country to all their fans.

      1. Ridley 4 Smash DLC!

True. Instead, we got nothing but crap consoles that is behind everyone else. Still, it’s better than what Sega has been doing.

  2. Dear Sega, can you say “Back to basics”??
As far as games like Sonic go, remember what made them so successful in the first place, AND FUCKING EMULATE THAT! Seriously you lot did a good job with sonic 4 and Generations, then instead of continuing down that path, YOUR RETARDED BRAINS DECIDED TO SWITCH TO CRAP LIKE SONIC BOOM! I mean god damn, I think sega is literally run by monkeys at this point, it’s infuriating to see the contrast between how much they hype up a game before it’s release, and then the reception of the finished product.
It’s simple, whatever worked when you were successful enough to have your own consoles, DO THAT, Where the hell is Sonic 5 and Sonic Adventure 3?? Give us those and stop trying to create something new cause you’re obviously bad at that.
-Sincerely, everyone (Who actually remembers when there were *cough* good sonic games)

    1. My roomate said sonic 4 was trash actually, and he’s a huge fan of the old school games, so if he says it sucked, I’m pretty sure it sucked cause his opinion on a lot of things are usually spot on. Generations he said was decent though. But the last really good game was Sonic Adventure 2 (or Battle on GameCube which is what I had).

      1. It didnt really sucks but it wasnt really good. It was kind of meh (i’m a huge sega fanboy) all the stages where reharshed of old games, physics where wore than those on sonic 3 and the music was bland, also the homming attack is NOT cool on a classic 2d sonic in my opinion.
As i have said it just looked like a fan made game it was fun but just to short and forgetable with little imagination and work on it.
Average game, it shouldnt be a reference for the new sega… Sega executives and designers should pick up a megadrive and play sonic 3 which in my opinion is the best game ever, then they should play out run and space harriers. After that they should pick up a sega saturn amd play nighta and panzer dragoon and finally they should pick a dreamcast and play ket set radio among others. Those were UNFORGETABLE games and thats what sega deserves!
I know i didnt mention sonic adventure, i wasnt a big fan of those two games i find the story bland and most of the characters unnecesary and annoying.

        1. Yeah I’ll admit sonic 4 was bad, I just played it today and realized that it’s much worse than I remember, but my point is that they had the right idea, the problem is they fucked up and then gave up on the idea too quickly, they should have stayed on that path, continuing where the classics left off and trying until they got it right.

        1. I was laughing loads at the fantards damage controlling criticism of sanic 4…”p-physics don’t matter da gameplay does” yeah because, y’know, having rush styled physics at level designs full of automated sections is ‘t gameplay lel

    2. It could be a Konami situation-the people running the company act like fucking idiots because they know nothing about the gaming industry. This could apply to Sammy.

    3. Ridley 4 Smash DLC!

Hey! Don’t insult monkeys! Dumb monkeys is less insulting to primates since even they seem to be smarter than a lot of Sega’s employees. lol But I feel the same way about Nintendo of America. Nothing but a bunch of dumb monkeys throwing shit at each other.

  3. Honestly this is not surprising, but they will need at least 5 games that I’d be impressed with to regain my trust. 2 of which if released in the West from Japan would make me just throw my wallet at the screen. There’s a lot of games that they need to release here, and if they don’t they’ll lose out heavily.

Progress is slow, but they need to apologize and give shittons of content before I’d be considered happy again, especially with Project Mirai DX.

        1. I’d say that if we hace to take a 3D game as a standard for the next 3D gsmes they should pick up sonic colours it was better than the adventures, its level design were amazing it also remembered me.sometimes to those of sonic3 which is my favourite game of all time. Though i would get rid of wisps, not a big fan.

            1. I think the Chao Garden is what MAKES it Sonic Adventure. Have you ever noticed that the only Sonic games that have the good Gardens were the Adventure titles? It’s like they’re synonymous with the other.

  4. Why is everyone so hooked on Sonic Adventure? Good lord, those games are terrible. Not to mention Sonic is the forerunner of the Furry Agenda, where the twisted furries try to promote Sonic into the mainstream, thereby making furries mainstream. An awful turn of events for sure.

      1. I thought they were good. Sure, the camera could’ve been better and the voice acting was…interesting. But, imagine if they made a game with the gameplay of the Sonic/Shadow levels from SA2. Give it a darker, less comical storyline (not trying to be hilarious likenSonic 06’s story) and that game pad and you’re good.

        1. The problem with sonic adventure (1&2) is that they take themselves too serious. Sonic doesnt need a “edgy-dark” story.

          1. I think a “dark/edgy story” CAN work…but sega is terrible at making them. Maybe they could get someone else? Though, to be fair, it’s kind of hard to take a game about a cousin-filled, oversized hedgehog seriously.

        2. Sonic ’06’s story wasn’t comical- it just came off that way because of the voice acting and overall plot. I would think a destroyed city sitting in a lake of lava in a decimated future would be fairly dark.

      2. Ridley 4 Smash DLC!

The moment he started spouting off about the “Furry Agenda” is when you should have realized he shouldn’t be taken seriously. As long as being a furry doesn’t involve actually raping actual animals, I say let those people be. What they do behind close doors with other consenting adults is their issue. lol

  5. Hello Sega! Do you remember something called Skies of Arcadia? The fandom’s been patiently waiting for 15 years now.

  6. HOW THE MIGHTY HAVE FALLEN, JUST WAITING FOR NINTENDO TO FOLLOW SUIT,AFTER A TERRIBLE E3 IN THE HISTORY OF GAME,NINTENDO IS RUN BY RETARDED BRAINLESS APES,STAR FOX ZERO IS A LAZY STAR FOX 64 REMAKE WHICH LOOKS LIKE IT RAN ON GAMECUBE HARDWARE, WHY DONT THEY HAVE LAND MISSIONS FOR FOX McCloud whereby its a hack and slash kind of game play, and he could seamlessly get on his jet,and also have the environment designed by Monolith soft, after 3 years of Wii U’s life its still inferior to Wii

Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are far better then Super Mario 3d world and NSMB U

Xenoblade chronicles is far better then XBCX

Super Smash Bros Brawl is far better then SMB Wii u

Twilight Princess for Wii U is far better then Windwaker HD

    need i say more?

    1. I don’t agree with most of that, you have something wrong with you if you think Starfox Zero looks like it could ever dream of running on the Wii or GameCube, go back and play a game from those and you’ll see why. It can’t handle above 480p 30fps for starters and don’t even get me started on textures. Sure it’s not up to the Wii U’s standards but that can easily change before release. As for the games you mentioned, WWHD was a remake and it’s just opinion if its better or worse than TP. And I don’t want to waste my breath explaining the rest to you.

  7. Would love to see new:

    Skies of Arcadia
    NiGHTS
    Panzer Dragoon
    Crazy Taxi
    Sonic Rush
    Scud: The Disposable Assassin
    Jet Grind Radio
    Billy Hatcher
    House of the Dead
    Shinobi
    Gunstar Heroes
SEGA All-Stars Racing (w/ polished controls)
    Shining Force
    Vectorman
    Feel the Magic
    Sands of Destruction
    Comix Zone

& tell ATLUS to make new Tactics Ogre/Ogre Battle.

        1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

          >>>As far as I’m concerned, Beast Rider will be ignored and never considered to be a true Golden Axe by me ever, just like the current state of Federation Force is to Metroid>>>

    1. Atlus should take shining force.
Comix zone or street of rage should be taken by platinum, and billy hatcher by retro. I know they are developing for nintendo but… It would be awesome.
A crazy taxi by cryterion would rock too.
By the way i would totally hate a new sonic rush, they were like washed out versions of the megadrive era games their level design were so poor.

    2. Ridley 4 Smash DLC!

A new Ogre Battle would be nice. Speaking of, I seriously need to go back to Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber & actually beat it. I love the game but once I get to the part where ogres are an enemy unit, I end up in a bad situation & end up losing interest. Which is a shame because difficulty aside, I really do love the story of the game & the attention to character development.

        1. Full Definition of LORDLY
          1
a : of, relating to, or having the characteristics of a lord : dignified
          b : grand, noble
          2
: exhibiting the pride and assurance associated with one of the highest birth or rank
          — lord·li·ness noun
          — lordly adverb

You have to actually play the game to understand the title of it. If you still had your Wii U, I’d highly suggest going onto Wii Mode & buy that game from the Wii Shop Channel. It’s a challenging game with a pretty good story.

      1. Well, it’s been a while since I played OB64, but I do remember it being a good sendoff to N64 for me.

& I also remember *cough* exploiting *cough* the item-multiplier bug *cough* *cough* Oh the shame…

        1. All this talk of Ogre Battle 64 is reminding me of Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage! I enjoyed that game but never got too far after hitting the gnome/dwarf town at the beginning of the game because I didn’t have a memory card at the time & I had moved on to the Gamecube by then. :/

          1. Plus, it was a rental so I couldn’t rent it again as the place I use to rent from as a kid was not accessible for me anymore as we moved away. Nor could I find it again at any other rental place.

            1. I missed out on Aidyn. I lived in a small town & was w/ out internet for much of that era, so I had a limited selection. My best bet would’ve been the few times I visited a city AND could convince a parent/grandparent to buy an expensive cart. I gathered most of my info from gaming mags, but they were little help if I couldn’t reach the game.

I did order an SNES game from a Game Dude listing in a mag, but w/ out email or even internet, that was horrible. They even sent me a letter telling me they were out of Metal Warriors & what my current choices were. I picked FF III, which was cool, but the whole process was such a pain. Using a money order, time spent waiting on delivery, problems during shipping that added to the wait & fristration…

I knew about OB64 through Nintendo Power. Oddly enough, the chance to buy it came through a graduation catalog. &…there was another problem! I originally ordered X-Men: Mutant Academy for N64, but it was cancelled after they’d printed the offer. Oh well, Ogre Battle 64 was a much, MUCH better purchase.

Moral of the story: Silver linings? Be grateful for eCommerce? Shit, even ording Tactics Ogre Knight of Lodis from Amazon had an issue. I ordered it, & waited for my confirmation email. & waited as I watched the game sell out. I emailed them & luckily they finally shipped it, along w/ a $30 gift voucher (thank you for my free Outlaw Star Perfect Collection). Never did get Metal Warriors, though.

Anyway, shortly after OB64, I got a GBA (w/ Golden Sun), my family had internet, & I was hyped for GCN (that Zelda Spaceworld demo). I got a job & bought a PS1 to tide me over ’til the 6th console gen fully began. & w/ the internet, GCN & GBA were the 1st of my libraries that really exploded.

I guess Ogre Battle 64 was a point in my life that marked many beginnings & endings, both inside gaming & outside.

  8. My ass. The Consoles, Sonic 2006, going mobile and now 4 terrible ass Sonic Boom games straight while making Boom Sonic the new modern…yuck, no fucking way.

You wanna know how to win them make? MAKE A FUCKING ADVENTURES 3 WITH CHAO GARDEN!

      1. Not if they take notes from Adventure 2 and build up upon it and revive the all time favorite “Chao Garden” and Sega would be loved again while Sonic is redeemed from shit to decent status.

        1. Lol. Sega almost revived him with Colors and Generations. And then they screwed it up all over again.

  9. Nintendo Dark Jester Kooweek

//I hope for you to end it with Sonic Boom fast and look back at the GC/DreamCast Era when you I remember made a good game

  10. Seriously.. just give us Phantasy Star Online 2 and shut some of us up.. still leaves a bad taste to this day, broken promises >_>

  11. Nope, not going to trust this shit at all. You had lost soooooo many fans since the day you became a third party developer and it will take a lot to recover the damage your constant fuck ups had done. My girlfriend is right, Namco does a better job that doing what their customers want if we simply ignore Pac-Boy and the Crappy Adventures. You guys are so longer my favorite developer and are dead to me just like Crapcom and Fucknami.

  12. If Nintendo buys Sega at some point in the near future, I won’t be surprised.

I can see Nintendo doing better justice with Sonic than Sega did as of late.

    1. i was thinking SEGA needs to realize that fans wanted a proper anniversary sonic game next for all consoles and they need to understand that some fans dont like the crapy sonic boom designs.

  13. Well Sega, if you’re really serious about making good games again, then give us Valkyria Chronicles 3 already! Other than that, I’d kill for another Jet Set Radio.

    1. Ridley 4 Smash DLC!

Give me a new Ogre Battle, Valkyria Chronicles game (never played any of the games but the series still interests me), a new Phantasy Star Online that’s on par with Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 & 2, & a better Sonic game that isn’t fucked to hell and back with glitches.

  14. Do you think this means they’ll FINALLY localize Phantasy Star Online 2? A game they promised to localize for Europe/U.S. back in 2012?

  15. Anyone who is thinking Sonic Boom is all that he’s talking about is wrong. He did say the last 10 years which includes Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 06, Secret Rings, and basically all Sonic games that were ever considered bad except Heroes and before. I’m really happy to be hearing this because SEGA has made some of the worst decisions any video game company he ever made and they are finally admitting to it. They are accepting the fact that they done goofed and have the goal of change and better games in mind. If he is telling the truth and isn’t just saying that to give us some false hope, then the games are no longer going to be rushed for the holiday so they can make money. It’s now about good games and not deadlines and I’m so thankful for that. Sonic Team cares about making good games even if they have a deadline, but now basically all games published by SEGA will be at least good because they aren’t forcing release dates and deadlines on their developers. This gives me a ton of hope for Sonic Boom Fire and ice and lets hope the 25th anniversary goes well.

  16. I want to see more of the other franchises. Sega should stop ignoring them! But if they don’t sell as well, then I can’t blame them…

  17. I’ve actually never been a major fan of ANY games by SEGA that I can recall. Never cared for Sonic.
