Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has sadly passed away. Nintendo has issued a statement which you can read here. Mr Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth. My condolences go out to Satoru Iwata’s family.

It is indeed true though that Nintendo has a much more traditional way of running a company in Japan, where there’s always a committee and everyone has a say and if someone doesn’t like an aspect of something they can interject and hold it up or stamp it out – I’m not sure how common this is, but I think if it were rampant we’d see Nintendo in an even worse situation, so I still don’t downplay Iwata’s effect on the company and his overall leadership.
His effect is/was great. As CEO, he created the vision of the company. It is up to everyone to fulfill that vision.
That is certainly up for debate. I’d argue that the Wii console made gaming in general worse off by making a platform for a load of shovelware shit while introducing another gimmick that was a waste of time and effort in order to draw in casuals. The overall effect was a huge saturation point of shit that left a sour taste in gamers’ mouths – and now they tried to do the same thing by trying to get the tablet casual gamers from iOS and Android with the stupid gamepad which has been a failure. Mismanagement of Amiibo, failure to listen to their base or understand what gamers actually want and TELLING us they know what we SHOULD want? Come on. Maybe he was going to turn it around with the NX. We’ll have to wait and see what he was planning. But at the moment, his “vision” is and was anything but great.

The Wii literally pulled in 100 million plus families into the gaming market, bringing them to experience the joy of gaming. I can tell you one thing, Sony was attempting and succeeded in getting the same type of gamers but including a CD player, DVD player and BluRay player in their consoles. You are using the word gimmick wrong because Power is a gimmick. Home and Handheld console is a gimmick. Video games themself is a gimmick. A gimmick is what you buy anything for. It is what hooks you to the product. Please don’t misuse the word gimmick without understand what a gimmick really is. You cannot say it left a sour taste in gamers’ mouths because you have no facts to back that up with. No percentage, no numbers at all. Mismangement of Amiibo happens with any and everything that is popular. Do you really know how big Nintendo’s fan base is? No numbers to back that up. It is their company they produce products they want and then consumers buy it not just fans of the company but consumers as a whole. He was all about the fun of video games and how they effected his fans. Truly a man of passion and heart. I… I… Well that came out of nowhere… I wish his family and friends the best, and I hope that whoever fills Iwata’s place will truly help Nintendo. I’ve known many of my relatives who’ve passed away from previous illnesses, and it can be very saddening to just see someone that you love and hold close to your heart, suddenly just die within a few short days. It can be hard and trying on relatives of someone who spend a lot of time with them. Personally, my mom’s dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease back in 2008-2009, and he was taken care of by my mom until the day he passed away in mid-October 2014 (he was doing okay until mid-July 2014, when he fell and broke his femur, and he only went downhill from there). My mom had tough emotional times over the next 3 months, but she still adjusted to her loss of her father, and I can only hope that Mr. Iwata’s close relatives will be able to recover from the passing of Mr. Iwata like my mom recovered from the passing of her dad.
This is very sad news to hear. For me personally, it’s scary because my father is currently the same age as Mr. Iwata was. You just never know what life will throw at you so live it to the fullest.
Iwata was born around 4 years after my dad was born, so this puts some fear in me, too.
My parents are near 80, so you never know how long things are going to last. I have had friends my age already die of illnesses. All I can say time is appreciate as much time as you can with your family and friends.
I always remember seeing his name at the end of so many game credits, I always knew he was someone important in Nintendo from that since a long time. Rest In Peace! Such an amazing contributor to the gaming industry.

Remember people, he was not the ONLY person making the decisions you didn’t like from Nintendo, many developers on the games also made the decisions, so stop blaming just th president and have some respect, he was not an awful CEO, you still forget this is the man that gave us Wii with games like Mario Galaxy, the amazing DS and now awesome 3DS with 46644646373823646447 games we’ve spent playing hours and hours and days. Also the Wii U in its own it’s a great console with unique features like the GamePad and gave us great games like Smash Bros, Super Mario 3D World, Splatoon, Bayonetta 1 and 2, Hyrule Warriors, Wonderful 101 DonkeyKong Country: Tropical Freeze and so much more. You may have not liked the E3 just because of two games, Metroid and Animal Crossing, but the rest was awesome and fun, and it’s just two games that are party family-friendly games that we are used Nintendo to release, and probably they will be super fun. And I hope the trolls who insolted Iwata and wanted to be fired really feel awkward after these news and in the future have respect for the company and people working at it. It’s a video games company, that has to entertain us, not only give us mature titles to feel grown up, hell, I don’t wanna feel grown up, I age to feel grown up, I wanna play video games to have fun like a kid does. And you trolls, also don’t wanna feel grown up, that’s why you troll, so stop hating on family friendly games or that are just for EVERYBODY! Enjoy Nintendo and it’s future games ’cause it’ll be the last legacy we’ll get from Iwata and then other things will come. but respect to this man because me and my friends laugh our asses off and have been having so much fun playing 3DS, 3DS, Wii U, and Wii for many hours, days, and years. And may I add the GameCube (my favorite Nintendo console) and GameBoy Advance too, and many games that came with them, specially my favorite games ever, the two Baten Kaitos games. He oversaw the release of all that too. And many games he worked on before that.
Also at the end I meant having so much fun “playing 3DS, DS, Wii U, and Wii” and add GameCube and GBA to that list. :)
Mr. Iwata was a part of making so many games that i love so much have given me so much joy and fun times and thats why i love nintendo because i can be a kid at heart and my 71 year old mom enjoys playing nintendo wii u allso she loves mario kart and super mario 3D world and she played thru the entire super mario galaxy 1 and 2 with me (and loved when she could be baby luma) and she played as Dixie kong with me thru the entire tropical freeze Donkey kong game and it has given me alot of joy to get close with my mom agin thru nintendo games after we had some bad times. the Wii U has meant so much to me, and i have a 2DS what i really enjoy too. thank you for your words Alosjs because they are so true.

true, i only laugh around when i’m thinking about what he’s done in life, and i mean the silly parts, like bananas and being launched in smash by reggie, and thanking non-specific action figure.
I guess as much as it sucks to say, we should have seen this coming. The last couple years of his life haven’t been great with his health. He’s had to miss very crucial events for Nintendo on more than one occasion because of these problems. Still, it doesn’t make it hurt any less. This man, while the last few years haven’t been great for the company, has changed many people’s lives with the games he’s helped make including my own.
I hope Nintendo can recover from this, and more importantly, his family.

Like some others me too thought that this was just some sick prank, but it seems to be true…unreal. Iwata did so much for Nintendo, he even helped with the coding of Smash.Melee to get it faster on store shelves and fans to play, he always came across as a guy who loved to do what he did. I wish all the best for his family.

I am so deeply saddened and shocked by this news. Iwata truly was an inspiration, he was a visionary who dared to challenge the establishment of the Japanese business ethos and gaming in general. This man was a true gamer who always had the gamer in mind. Nintendo will never find a president like him. All those years ago, Yamauchi saw the great promise Iwata had as a leader and chose him as his successor over his own son. He certainly made the right choice. Iwata was genuinely irreplaceable and a man who commanded much respect and admiration from gamers the world over.
RIP Satoru Iwata, you will be sadly missed and always fondly remembered.

I thought it was a bloody joke…. Shocking in some aspects and so unfortunate. I thought a guy like him will have survived his career. Sad day for Nintendo and the rest of the gaming community. You know what’s also sad? That he’ll never be able to talk about the NX next year like he has been saying for the past few weeks. Also, he’ll never know how the Wii U will do in its end or how the NX will be recieved. And he’ll never know how the smartphone games launch will go. Also, it’s sad he died in a moment when Nintendo was under fire because of their E3 presentation. It’s sad to know that maybe one of the last things he read was people talking awful things about him, Nintendo, their E3, Federation Force, the Wii U, and Animal Crossing, it could have depressed him and it made his illness worse, it’s sad he didn’t see his costumers and fans happy by his last big effort (E3 2015). :(

I was already suspecting that something strange was going on, the absence of Iwata in recent events, and the presence of a substitute (probably that Morimoto) were already signs of this, the lack of announcements in this last E3 certainly had to do with Iwata. Talking about it, the big difference between him and the others was the charisma and the proximity to the fans, something that is not common with other presidents of any corporation in the world, he was very competent in the field of Hardware and nobody can disagree with, had his decisions that didn’t please everyone, but its proximity to the fans was something very unusual.His legacy will remain for many years, and can be sure what the future of Nintendo’s path will be based on decisions when he was still alive.
