Devil’s Third: Itagaki Says Use Pro Controller, Is 30FPS, No Split Screen Or Voice Chat, 16 Player Multiplayer

Previews so far for Devil’s Third haven’t been quite what people were expecting, but European gamers will have a chance to find out for themselves next month. The producer Tomonobu Itagaki is stressing that people should play the game with the Wii U Pro Controller as that’s what he designed the game around. He blames the bad previews on the fact that people are using the GamePad. The game itself runs at 30fps and Itagaki says this framerate is just fine for the game.

  • Devil’s Third runs in 30 FPS. Itagaki promises that this massive shooter (emphasis on massive) is enjoyable at 30 FPS.
  • Itagaki decided not to use split screen for online and offline play. Instead, the single player campaign uses the full power of the Wii U console.
  • Devil’s Third does not have voice chat. The bandwidth that would have been used for this feature was instead used for 16 player multiplayer.
  • In an earlier post, Itagaki explained why they recommend the Pro Controller and a USB keyboard over the GamePad. He feels the face buttons are crowded on the GamePad, so you can make mistakes with inputs. The analogs are also too far apart, making it difficult to get a graps of the battlefield. Lastly, and practically, the GamePad is not suitable for many hours of play, and they designed Devil’s Third for long play sessions.
  • Valhalla chimed in and explained that it comes down to multiplayer, which they intend to house tens of thousands of players.

  1. Okay ive heard the name devils third a lot lately but i still have no clue what it is whatsoever… Can anyone catch me up :)

  2. “Enjoyable at 30fps” …my PCMasterRace side is reacting badly to this. And I’m glad I wasn’t excited by the game. 60..everything is best at 60…

  3. Why does this sound like something that Ubisoft or EA would say? There is no gameplay difference between the pro controller and the tablet controller. I have used both in many games.

  4. Yes, please, apologize more for your product before anyone’s played it. You’re really instilling us with a lot of confidence.

      1. The gamepad feels awkward on my hands — and I have big hands. I wonder how kids and dudettes are able to hold it for hours…

  5. Who will put in doubt the talent of a guy who did a great job bring a 2d ninhja gaiden game into the 3ds world?

  6. I am waiting on this game. If they are some issues so be it. I have never played a game that didn’t have an issue of some kind. Humans make games so there will be mistakes.

    1. Some serious flaw in that logic there. I’ve played Several games with no glitch or issue in my short time on earth so far.

damm even devil third cant even have voice chat. what the fuck is this non sense. i really want to chat with my friends, teammates and sometimes the enemies. seriously 30fps, black ops 2 and splatoon had 50-60 fps in multiplayer with barley in stutter at all. no local multiplayer, ok just a big loss again.

    1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

      >>>Black Ops 2 = 6 vs 6, Splatoon = 4 vs 4, Devil’s Third = 8 vs 8, I’d rather have more players online than useless chat>>>

        1. Only a social reject like that Nigerian dog would say that voice chat is his only chance of human interaction. Exposed again!

yah it true, american society is fully a narcissistic people that reject will reject me 95% of the time. as of right am still isolated in my life until i play a video game online full with real life people playing it. video games with voice chat have made me feel less isolated with my life. i dont even mind having a wii u chat and google live chat with anyone on the internet because my social life in the real world sucks. if i become single with no partner, i would considered my pc, wii u and other video game consoles to be my wife. she would never nag, give birth or threaten my for a divorce for child surpport money or alimony. she would accept any game or disc place on the disc tray and love it. spending money on video games and myself interests is more fun to me than wasting my time paying a dinner for girl that would 93% of the time reject me or pretend to like me.

it’s amazing how you don’t use the memes about you created by the nintendo fanboys and fangirls on this site.

  8. 30 fps is fine, no one ever complained about stuff like this back in the Gamecube days, or even on the Wii…
I never even considered that this game would have splitscreen. Now I know it’s not there, it is a little disappointing.
Why does everyone want voice-chat so much anyway? I play Planetside 2 on the PS4, y’know, the game that has multiplayer in triple digit numbers and only one or two people use voice-chat, and spew garbage out of their mouths for no reason other than that they feel they should use a feature that realistically adds very little – anybody who can use voice-chat doesn’t really bother.

    1. I have voice chat off on every game I play that uses it. I know some people really like to use it and that’s fine but I don’t like to talk to people when I’m playing rather it be a friend or my wife. I try to get lost in the game to enjoy it.

  9. NINTENDO is having a slow ass “Online coming out party”. Lmao
    Only 30Fps.
    No voice chat.
    No gamepad.
    No split screen.
Damn dawg!! This feels like the gawd damn Sega Dreamcast!!! Lol

    1. He didn’t say no gamepad, he says he recommends the Pro-Controller which makes a lot of sense in this game.

  11. From the gameplay that’s already out there it looks like the game barely hits 30 frames on single player at times….How in god’s name is the game supposed to run at a consistent 30 frames with 15 other people connected and playing at the same time (O – O)

  12. The only time I ever use the gamepad, is when I’m forced to use it. Splatoon would be so much better with single player pro control support. I honesty hate the gamepad. It was the only reason I almost didn’t buy a Wii U.

    1. Really, because I LOVE the gamepad! It’s one of my favorite things about the Wii U. Gotta have those motion controls, plus the screen is SO HELPFUL!!

    2. I use offscreen play so much… You’re entitled to your opinion, and maybe Nintendo shoulda made the gamepad optional, but I love the fucking thing.

  14. Yeah. Sadly everything pointed to this happening. I was hella excited for this game, actually I’ll go one step further. I was thinking of snagging a Wii U soon for a couple games I wanted to play. This game being one of them. Everything I just read killed it for me. The action looked awesome. Back to the Halo 3 match making lol.

But I like local split screen multiplayer =(. Oh well. The online sounds fun. Is it too much to hope for a training mode against bots at least?

  16. Yea I’ll pass on this for sure, this is just shady now. Was already bad enough he has not shown anything that proves what he has been saying since E3 2014, and other outlets have had to show us instead.

That is always a huge red flag, when the developer themselves aren’t even willing to show the game. He doesn’t necessarily even need E3, Nintendo’s permission, or Nintendo Directs to do so. If what he was saying was true, he’d be happy to show us why it is.

Now he’s straight up lying, claiming the pro controller is somehow going to change how the game handles poorly. Which makes no sense, and yes, the analog sticks are further apart on the gamepad compared to the pro controller, but it makes no difference because of the way it’s held. It isn’t like you’re using both hands on each analog stick, as in you’re literally going back and forth with hands to each stick, only then would the distance between them matter.

How about he addresses all the other problems with his game that have been shown lately, instead of making up excuses for it? I’d have more respect for that than this crap, and because of this I’m not bothering with this at all now.

I was going to give it a chance possibly in the future if he fixed a lot of this, but the fact he is ignoring it all, does not make me want the game ever.

    1. To noobs, it may be unnecessary. To people who enjoy a competitive online experience, it is very necessary for the most part.

  18. So sick of nothing including splitscreen anymore…..
first Halo 5…. a series built on playing right there with your friends….
    nkw everything…
why purchase a game for multiplayer when in about 10 years that half of the game will be unplayable…???
