Business Insider reporter Ben Gilbert was recently invited by Nintendo to try out Super Mario Maker in New York City. During his time with the upcoming Wii U title, Gilbert noticed that his hand wasn’t displayed on the TV screen during gameplay. Instead, a hand that seemingly belongs to a white woman mimicked his movements as he was editing a level on the Wii U GamePad’s touch screen. According to Gilbert, this is a “bizarre, glaring flaw” in Super Mario Maker.
“Yes, I’m a white guy, but my fingers are far from long and slender (sadly),” Gilbert writes.
“What if I were, say, a 10-year-old black girl? Or a 30-year-old Japanese man? Or literally anything other than an adult white woman (which the hand appears to belong to)?
“Given the mainstream appeal of the mustachioed hero and his ongoing battle against Bowser, you’d think Nintendo – a company that’s repeatedly shown willingness to be inclusive – would have thought of this.
“When I asked Nintendo reps about the hand and if it could be changed, they confirmed that it couldn’t be. They also reacted with surprise that there wasn’t an option to swap it out.”

You can chanhe how your hand looks in Tearaway, so why can’t you change how your hand looks in Super Mario Maker. And yes I know those two games are made by completely different devs, but it really isn’t that difficult to add different hands in the game.
It’s not racist or sexist, it’s just really petty. Tearaway makes sense to go through the trouble of the different hands because the game is literally supposed to be a world in your hands. This is just a visual cue, totally inconsequential to the game itself. The fact that they went this far is almost impressive considering they easily could’ve use the tried and true green dot from the eshop. They did this cause it didn’t require any coding though. If they had alternatives they would’ve had to involve coders, menu guys, the lot. This was just a simple 2 minute deal for visual flair. You’d honestly have more validity of you complained as to why Mario is only an Italian American male plumber and not any less specific white or alternative race or gender. When I first saw this article I rolled my eyes, thinking they were complaining about the ads shown on TV. But thinking about how this hand is in gameplay and mimicking the motions of your hand, wouldn’t it be a little off putting and even kind of disturbing to see your hand as a strangers? Not only that but adult white women really falls no where in the major Nintendo demographics, so its a bit odd that they’re representing the hand of maybe 3 people who will actually play the game.

And from a design and UI standpoint, maybe a white female hand is the most aesthetically pleasing against the light, colorful backdrop of the game? We don’t always have the bring race and gender into it; sometimes a pale, lack of coloration is the most aesthetically pleasing. I mean, just look at this website for goodness sake.

well I can understand the issue but most of the video portrait a character which does not look like the real word. As for the white woman hand, it make a perfect sense. Imagine a bloke’s hand instead (does not matter the colour/race), it will have to be bigger therefore occupy more space on the screen which will be a bumper if that game as an off-tv feature. now white instead of another colour… contrast issue could be the problem. Also the game need to appeal new gamers, not establish gamers who will buy the game cause they want to have a go at it.

It probably works like tomodachi life, the main mii’s skin tone determines the skin tone of the hand, so the Main mii on this console was probably a white female. (Meaning they all used the white female when playing it and probably didn’t know any better.)
I’m pretty sure this person was only using a demo version. That would explain why there’s no other options because in other demos I’ve seen, there’s a black hand and even a cat’s paw.
