Playtonic Explains Why Rare Turned Its Back On 3D Platformer Genre

Playtonic, the developers behind the gorgeous 3D platformer Yooka-Laylee, have sat down for an extensive interview with Redbull. There are a number of topics addressed in the interview, but one of the most interesting is why Rare turned its back on the 3D platformer genre that many would say that the company had nailed. Gavin Price says that for Rare it was simply a case of moving forward and trying out different things, which in theory the company should be applauded for.

I don’t think they turned their back on the genre consciously. It was more of a desire to move ahead and try new things such as Viva Piñata and Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts – concepts that kind of needed a bit of horsepower behind them, and they had the hardware to finally do them. Inevitably every studio probably has lots more ideas than developers to go around, so maybe it was more the case there just wasn’t enough resources to continue with platformers and deliver new experiences.

  1. Except that they didnt make anything worth mentioning for the last 10 years and they still didnt figure out it wouldve been better to just stick to 3D platformers.

You are so gaddamn delusional. I guarantee that you would have more fun if you had a PS4.

              1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

                >>>I have a PC, why would I want a Sonyan machine when nothing on it interests me?>>>

Lol I’ve had it for a while. So far I have Destiny(the game I play the most), drive club, Second son, and soon GTA. I will be getting more games as soon as I get payed.

                  1. Idk, Rare wasn’t as good by the time they were bought by MS. It was a dying studio and is probably why Nintendo do didn’t buy them (yes Nintendo had first dibs, at least according to one of the stamper brothers.)

                      1. Maybe if the team never disbanded like it did it still would’ve been a prominent team. By then though, only a few members were left, and the rest of the talent left to Free Radical and Retro. At least Viva Piñata came out of it which is supposed to be a good game.

                1. Rare should’ve partnered with Nintendo back in the 90’s. If Nintendo wasn’t interested then Rare should’ve went to Sony. Because M$ has TOTALLY FUCKED THEM UP!!!

Now finally they’re doing something with Rare. About GAWD DAMN TIME!!! It only took you 13 years!!!

Kinda shocking to hear about not having enough resources considering that this is MS they were brought by.

                3. FYI Rare is just a namesake these days.

Imagine you take a body, and replace each organ with a new one (Brain, heart, etc)… All except the spleen.

The people responsible for their past successes are gone. Not just to Playtonic, but they’re all over the place.

At this point, you’d just be buying into a brand – Not the ‘spirit’ you fell in love with.

Please. Don’t pretend like Microsoft had nothing to do with all the bad games that got made after they bought Rare.

                5. A lack of resources, huh? What about other studios?

Ubisoft abandoned Prince of Persia & 3D Rayman.

Square-Enix turned Tomb Raider from a 3D Platformer into a TPS.

                  Namco abandoned I-Ninja.

Sony seems to have abandoned Crash Bandicoot long ago. & where’s Ape Escape & Sly Cooper?

Spyro? Vexx (well Acclaim went bust)? Flip’s Twisted World? Psychonauts? Gex?

Rare wasn’t the only 1 to turn away from 3D Platformers. Seems indies & Nintendo were left to uphold that genre. Even 2D Platformers. & Kart Racers (Nintendo). & Arcade Racers (indies). &…

                  1. There’s a fairly recent Sly Cooper and there’s a Ratchet and Clank on the way. Crash Bandicoot is an Activision property, ask them. The last 3D Raymans were shit compared to Rayman 2, so I kinda understand Ubisoft. Spyro is well and alive in Skylanders. Gex was shit and I’m glad he’s dead. Psychonauts is a fucking Tim Schafer game, but I hope Schafer rots in hell, even though he made a few great games.

                    1. But Thieves in Time took about 8 years, while 2 took about 2 yrs. after the 1st, & 3 took about 1 yr. after the 2nd. Sure, dev cycles can take a long time, but how long ’til the next Sly Cooper? Its releases are almost as sporadic as Jak & Daxter.
Yes, Ratchet & Clank have been well-represented. But aside from 2 Action Platformers & a Stealth Platformer…

I still consider Crash Bandicoot PlayStation’s mascot, even if Sony’s no longer the franchise’s publisher. I know, neither of them are the same anymore.

Rayman 2: The Great Escape was the last 3D Rayman title (far as I know); the rest are just recycled versions. It was critically acclaimed in 1999, but were the sales so bad that Ubisoft just decided to keep recycling it ’til they could profit off it? & both 3D & 2D Prince of Persia titles–my favorite Ubisoft games (& Buck Bumble)–have been MIA for quite a while. I’m all for new IP, but Ubisoft stopped making any new 3D Platformers.

Is Skylanders a lot like a Spyro 3D Platformer? I mean, if you play as him, does the game seem close? I’m not a big fan of toys-to-life (yes, that includes Amiibo).

3D/2D Platformers, turn-based Strategy/RPGs, & Arcade Racers are to me what FPSes, Open Worlds, & Sports Sims are to the mainstream.
