Nintendo: ‘The Wii U GamePad Is The Only Real Innovation This Console Cycle’

Scott Moffitt, The Executive VP of Sales at Nintendo of America, has told The Examiner that he believes that the Wii U GamePad is the only real innovation in the current console cycle. While that may be true, many would argue that it has been under-utilised and innovative ideas have been few and far between. Moffitt says that will all change with Super Mario Maker which seems well suited to the Wii U GamePad. Here’s what Mr. Moffitt had to say.

“We’ve proven time and time again, we make great games, they get great users scores as well as critical scores. With games like Star Fox and Mario Maker, we are continuing to show the promise of the Gamepad and, candidly, early on we probably didn’t showcase the promise of the Gamepad as well as we could have,”

“As developers have gotten more comfortable with the technology, now you’re seeing games that really leverage the power of the Gamepad. I think that will invite people to take a second look at Wii U,” said Moffitt.

“That’s our real secret sauce is [the Gamepad], it is the only real innovation in this console cycle, it’s the only real new idea or game experience and with Super Mario Maker it shows you how magical it is to create levels with that Gamepad. It’s so easy and intuitive.”

“Then with Star Fox Zero it’s showing how the Gamepad can give you a different view into your game world. You are piloting the ‘R Wing’ and you’re getting a cockpit view on the Gamepad. I think those types of experiences may help us propel the system to new heights,”

      1. They sure are stupud and dumb. They dont know how to use R&D. From 2008 to 2012 and thats the best they can do? Rayman Legends used the gamepad more than Nintendo and its not theirs.

            1. If Nintendo would have thought outside of the box and make the damn thing independent, acting like a standalone device to take home console gaming on the go, it would’ve been appreciated more.

              1. 1000% agreed!!! That gamepad would be ultra sweet if WE’RE A POOR MANS IPAD!! Lol
Didn’t have to be on level with Apples version. But shit! At least make it where you can go ANYWHERE IN YOUR HOUSE & ANYWHERE ON YOUR PROPERTY!
But this is classic Nintendo we’re talking about.

            2. I would not say no one, but yes, the majority. There are small instances where I have enjoyed it, the same with the PS Vita. The problem is not a lot of people utilize these types of things well to make them that popular in the public eye.

I agree that people aren’t that accepting of change, but they do accept change when it works well. Not a lot of people cared about VR, since for the longest it has not been practical until now.

Again, problem being the gamepad is just a waste of battery life most of the time.

          1. You know, you’re implying that all notable features of the gamepad are useless, right? If the touch screen and tilt use in games is frowned upon, then that makes the majority of the Wii U’s library ‘lacking’ in innovation.

Rayman Legends had touch screen specific levels; and in some parts of many levels, the game required the gamepad to be tilted in some direction (clockwise, counter-clockwise, etc) or used in some sort of fashion. Also, in two-player mode, one person uses the gamepad’s touch screen to help the other player… Sounds to me like you never even played the game. Rayman Legends arguably uses the gamepad far more intuitively in gameplay than any Nintendo release on the Wii U thus far. The only game that may possibly match it is Nintendo Land, and even then I think that is debatable.

            1. Still defending a title from dickhead Ubishit that barely used the Gamepad in 15% of the game that Mario World 3D did slightly more than just touching, tilting. Rayman use of Gamepad was predictable. Black Ops 2 however discover there’s a hidden sensor bar in the device which Gamepad can be used as a secondary TV with Wii Remote use. That shit was clever.

              1. So you did’t play Rayman Legends then. I see.

Rayman Legends requires Player 1 to use it at all times; Super Mario 3D World does not require Player 1 to do this. Rayman legends has, for almost all Legends original levels, have several parts of each level that uses the gamepad in some sort of fashion (Origin levels and music levels do not use the gamepad); Super Mario 3D World has 0-2 gamepad required levels in each world. In terms of usage, Rayman Legends uses the Gamepad far more than 3D World does. It doesn’t use it in every world, mainly because of the remastered levels and the music levels, but the game was made with the gamepad in mind. Super Mario 3D World was NOT.

A predictable story isn’t good; however, gameplay and level design wasn’t so predictable. Usage of the gamepad may have been. Obviously it should, as it introduces you to the core uses of it in the beginning of the game, and then throws a few new things at you over time, but making that seem like a bad thing, to allow the player to learn how to progress more efficiently in the game, is suppose to be a bad thing?

That feature in Black Ops 2 isn’t a good one, IMO. It’s a neat idea, but when I actually ended up trying it, I found it to be somewhat annoying. Your hand can take up a good portion of the view on the screen, aiming became more difficult with using it (how far away you are from it can change this), and if you don’t have good eye sight, playing on that small screen is somewhat difficult since you need to put some distance between yourself and the gamepad to begin with. Just simply using the gamepad as the controller and off-TV works much better than using off TV play with the Wii Remote, for myself at least. I found it to not be such a great feature in practicality. Then again, I never stuck with aim assist in that game for any weapons, so maybe the aiming difficulty was just me.

                1. I did fool and it’s only sections of certain levels. Even the 3DS can do it. That’s even qualified as “innovation” because it’s been tried and true before, going back to the PC, DS and then Wii of level interactivity. Doesn’t matter if Legends had more levels to interact, ultimately the game never needed the Gamepad in the first place.

    1. Exactly what I was thinking. Every Dev has made a pass at making use of it except Nintendo (until recently).

      1. It’s going to sound gimmicky but that’s the what the system needs I think. It needs games like Project Zero with the camera aspect. We need Pokemon Snap 2 also I think. I would love if they done a sequel to Endless Ocean on the Wii U and have the ability to take underwater photography. It would look really beautiful I think if done right. I cannot wait to play Project Zero on October 30th! I loved it on the 3DS despite ratings. Spirit Camera is one of my favourite 3DS games that packs fun and possibly has the best overall physical use of the system.

        1. If it’s like Endless Ocean 2 or even better, I’d love an Endless Ocean 3 on the Wii U. It’s one of the few casual games I enjoyed immensely.

          1. I had the first one and that was it. I never got the chance to play 2. I actually regret selling the first one :( lol It’s pretty hard to find unless you wanna pay big money online. I’m looking at getting Pikmin 2 for Wii and It’s going to cost me at least 50 euro to get it. I just picked up the first one for about 20 euro which ain’t bad!

            1. You missed out with the second one. It took everything in the first one & improved it. The story for the second one made it feel more like a hardcore adventure game than a casual game.

    2. That is Nintendo for you, always so quick to mouth off when they haven’t been doing any better for years now. Them and their arrogant ways of never acknowledging anything outside of themselves and their own technology.

I really do not understand it. There is nothing wrong with being accepting of other peoples ideas, you aren’t God of the gaming industry Nintendo, your shit reeks too sometimes.

Just like this bullshit statement does, it fucking stinks.

            1. It’s only a gimmick when it isn’t used enough, which in the Wii U’s case is for certain. Not sure how much better it could be done as it has felt seemless and smooth to me when I have used it. Just takes some getting used to

              1. The problem with the game pad (that makes it a gimmick) is that it failed miserably to “change gaming” and, surprise surprise, Nintendo was full of shit. Tell me how something like Mario maker couldn’t been done on the DS/3ds…I’m waiting…

                1. Waiting for what? I didn’t say it couldn’t be done on a DS/3DS, although since you can make levels in Super Mario Bros. U it couldn’t have been done…

The problem is probably more about the difficulty in creating a game where the gamepad can take center stage as the control device. It has changed some aspects of gaming for me, like two people not having to share a screen on COD co-op and we use the off TV play. I think it is a bridge more so then an outright innovation. Perhaps if there were more 3rd party “regular” games, Nintendo could have focused more on making games that use the Gamepad as the focus, but may have scrapped some of that development to push games faster, I don’t know.

I love the gamepad, even if overall the WiiU has been disappointing from a sales/amount of games perspective

                  1. I fail to comprehend how anyone would prefer the gamepad over a regular controller. Off-TV play? Useless unless your family likes to hog the TV.

                    1. It depends on the game… Batman and ZombiU felt right with the game pad. And my kid uses the Gamepad off TV all the time. Even if the TV is free. Sometimes people need to realize that they are not the voice of everyone on the planet

                    2. It’s fine if you like bro. But you must understand my frustration over this “”innovation”” when it’s the entire focus of the damn console!

                    3. Exactly off-tv is something fans love to bring up but it’s totally useless if you have a tv of your own, which come on, most people do. It isn’t close to a true selling point.

    1. first of all its an Arwing not an “R wing”… we arent in the star wars universe last I checked. As for whether or not the gamepad is an innovation, yes, it is. Its not the touchscreen by itself that makes it so, clearly the ds had touch technology. What makes its innovative is the combination of technologies going on under the hood. You have a 1080p touchscreen, sure. However you also have the gyro tech from the wii-mote, a camera and sensor bar built into the top of the controller, and a headphone jack/stereo speakers built into it as well. No one has ever combined those features in a home console controller. No one has put stereo speakers in a controller before. No one has mounted a camera on the controller. Sure alot of this stuff may have been window dressing that devs hardly ever used (or not at all) but hes right. No one on the sony or microsoft side did anything new or different this time around. Hate to break it to you, but hes right.

      1. “You have a 1080p touchscreen”

Dude the touchscreen isn’t even 720p. Had it been 1080p the Wii U would’ve struggled like a bitch to streamed that. It’s only at 480p by the way. Phones have had all these gimicks attached to them for a while, the only difference is that Nintendo added buttons and sticks go their tablet. That doesn’t really scream innovation.

Now to say that Sonys touchpad on the DS4 or MS haptic feedback/rumble triggers isn’t innovation but putting sticks and buttons on a tablet is, well sir, I’m going to have to call that fanboy bias bullshit.

        1. Actually, DS4’s trackpad is fucking pointless as well and I haven’t even heard of one game using it and people still don’t know WTF its for and why it’s there anyway. Rumble triggers is just a minor updated touch for feedback which, again, is virtually pointless in the end. Not saying Gamepad is better because it’s not. It’s merely a 3DS with stripped purposes, features and a lame ass battery life; all of which 3DS surpasses and should’ve been used for Wii U instead.

          1. That was my point, gimmicky updates don’t meant innovation. I’m saying that if the Wii U’s game pad is considered innovative, then the DS4 and XBO controller should too because they are bring something that hadn’t been done before to a controller. (Although the PoS Vita technically has a touchpad on it.) Albeit very underused/useless features.

            1. None of them innovated shit. Wii U is merely half of a 3DS, DS4 with its odd choice of installing a touchpad without even using it at all is as pointless as Vita and Xbox…shouldn’t even exist since PC is right fucking there to do everything else without so much of a single con art ploy of robbing gamer’s for Internet play/access when they’re already paying for it elsewhere and online play that should be free.

      2. A lot of you Nintendo fans are so clueless when it comes to knowing about the hardware you actually buy… Even the games. Happens all the time, and it’s kind of annoying to me when people don’t know about what they spend their money on.

I also cannot stand how almost every Nintendo fan thinks every first party Wii U title is 1080p, when the only first party Wii U game currently out that is 1080p would be Smash Bro’s., The rest are all 720p upscaled.

  1. Shots fired.

But I’m not sure it’s innovation. They tried something new, but I don’t think they’ll be using the GamePad for much more after the Wii U.

    1. I might end up dissapointed, cause it much easier to navigate the OS than other systems (minus the DS line) and that is in big part due to the gamepad.

Its too bad EA never did a Sims or SimCity game on the Wii U. Or Nintendo did a Clubhouse (card) game or breakout the tabletop games from Wii Party U. There are kinds of little missed opportunities with the Gamepad that just seem obvious.

      1. I figure the GamePad (Or console-specific versions) will remain with future consoles for legacy reasons, or at least become ‘the norm’ once consoles are powerful to handle both it and the system at the same time.

I could see them still having the WiiU alongside the NX with no backwards play. Perhaps future consoles will include Wii U emulation.

      2. Browsing the internet and OS system has absolutely nothing to do with gaming. That is the best thing the wii u is has going for it, but I could care less about that cause it’s not hard at all to get into a game on the other systems.

  2. I’d actually agree with them. I love the gamepad. I’m on it right now… as I type.
Seriously. I’m enamored with it. Sure, the game support has been lacking… but when it’s done right…. like in Splatoon or Captain Toad…. it’s pretty fun.
I like it more than the wiimote too. Let’s all shake a stick at da TeeVee… right Jontron?

  3. They bring up some good points, though it still seems like they’ve hit a couple of speed bumps when trying to execute the concept.

  4. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

    >>>Yes it is, however, barely used so it’s not a big deal when it comes to applying the “science”>>>

          1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

            >>>Once High Command knows of my exalted existence and not only the lesser Command departments, they’ll see just how much war I would wage across the gaming universe>>>

                  1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

                    >>>That can be done once Sickr gives me the powers I’ve been asking for a while now>>>

                  2. The other Ice hasn’t been here in months dipshit and he ain’t a troll like originally thought but someone who knows what’s up and isn’t a fanboy like most of the losers here. Shadow Vegeta, Root Gamer, Ridley (don’t know what he has it set to now), Stranga, Iceaezema (however it’s spelt), and a few others I can’t think of are actually legit and aren’t blind to BS. Oh and my girls Namie & Michelle they know what’s up.

                    1. *waves* Hiiiiiiiiii, Stan! … Is my Roger from American Dad joke doing anything for ya? lol I just did a Seamus from Family guy joke in the process.

                  3. icezeama isn’t so much a troll as he is a guy that heavily criticizes Nintendo. It’s mostly only the fanboys that see him as a troll because if you are criticizing Nintendo, you’re just an idiot troll.

                    1. Anyway, you did forget to give poor Anubis a mention. Then again, he actually does troll on here on occasion.

  5. Gee Nintendo, how delusional can you be. They are all talk but can’t back their shit up. The gamepad was automatically a flop the moment you made it tethered to the damn console. Why not make the gamepad like its own independent thing? I honestly thought the Wii U would be a console that would combine portable handheld gaming with home console gaming. But of course let’s play it safe. just copy and paste Mario and it will surely sell!

The gamepad is nothing more than a bottom half of a broken 3DS. I can honestly go on and on about how much the gamepad is a failure, but I really don’t feel like it. Hell, Sony does a better job with the second screen than Nintendo and they are not even trying!

        1. it shows exactly the same as the tv screen, i do not like that!. I know i can use off tv and all…
DK: Tropical Freeze and wind waker hd do a great job with that second screen.

          1. I find the gamepad to be a distraction. Yes there’s off TV play, but why would I want to do that if I can play on my big screen TV? Unless the gamepad was more independent to the Wii U, and had more VC games (N64, GC) then hell yeah I would.

              1. If off TV play is the only innovative thing the gampad can do, then that’s a problem. I think the 3DS can pull that off, because if I rember correctly, you can use the 3DS as a controller in Smash bros. (Why would you ever do that though?)

                1. In like three party games WHOO! Mario Kart 8 didn’t even do it, yet Sonic Racing All Stars Transformed did. Nintendo failed but at least it has you fanboys making those pathetic 10 million sales.

                2. What about the 6 players on one console they promised with two Gamepads? Didn’t happen and it only adds one more player to the mix. Problem is, Internet play has taken over so local play is almost phased out. Besides, you already got the 3DS that can do 8 local players in MK7.

              2. It isn’t new, but yes, it was done right to a degree. It is just more limited than what is available now by Sony, and has been. The PS3 had Remote Play, did the same thing, just wasn’t used for a lot of games. It did work exactly the same for the few games it did work for on the PS3, it could be used tethered to the console or over the internet. And the PS4 has perfected it.

In my mind Nintendo is little behind on that front, since the gamepad is only tethered to the console and can’t be used outside of its range, and it has a really short range. Although they are different, since you kind of need PS Vita to make Remote Play viable. As far as the tech goes though, Sony already did this and even they weren’t the first people to have this idea, neither was Nintendo, it was actually Sega who first implemented this idea into the Dreamcast.

I’ve always preferred Remote Play over Off-TV Play. Especially with the Vita, since the Vita has a decent screen, the OLED model that is, and I can actually play my PS4 games without having to drag my PS4 around. I go out of town a lot, so it’s perfect for me, and I have good internet almost everywhere I go.

I rarely use Off-TV play because the limited range, and I do not like the gamepads LCD screen.

                1. I use the off-TV play a lot at my grandparents’ so my cousin can play xbox on his TV and I play Smash or other games on the WiiU gamepad. it’s pretty convenient when there’s only one tv.

            1. Off-TV is more of a convenient feature in case you wanna continue playing as someone else watches TV or movie. But it’s also a misfire because they missed the part of making the Gamepad live pause a game on TV while you use it to view/access apps, Internet and videos on its second screen at the same time instead of pausing and then string both displays along to view the same thing; multi-window tasking I mean. That would’ve been cool.

    1. hard drive in the GamePad would have been amazing. Download games to the gamepad, play full games anywhere… that is a big quip of mine, the connection distance to the console is just not far enough

      1. Thank you! That’s exactly what I wanted to happen. Sadly Nintendo decided to play it safe… unfortunately. Don’t even get me started on that abysmal connection.

        1. Yeah, i hated the connection from the first day I brought it home. Where da bluetooth at??? haha… seriously, if I could have brought that more than 20 feet away and beyond walls it would have been killer… if I could put a 32GB sd card in there and download a few games for a road trip or anything else, also it would have been the shit. Neither of those things happened so I guess, we are back to square one, a gimmick. However, it is better than most past Nintendo gimmicks. I do commend the Wii U for also not letting the Wii Remotes die, because their function is worthwhile.

While I am waiting for Google to hire me for quality control, I might as well send my resume to Nintendo as well… they need me. haha

          1. The first day I got my Wii U, I immediately tried to play 3D world in the living room, but that shit didn’t work. At that point I didn’t really have a need for the gamepad because all they are using it for is off TV play, but what the hell am I’m going to need that for if I can’t play games in a separate location?

            Good luck btw!

      2. SD in the Gamepad to hold up to 64-128GB of space and even transfer any game saved into the system into the Gamepad itself to be played on the go. That shit would’ve made the Gamepad even more amazing to use. But alas, Nintendo didn’t think things through at all.

        1. it would have been a game changer to play the console games on the move. Really, it would have made everything dude said in the article true… at least somewhat

          1. If they wanted to appeal to their casuals who moved on to iPads, they should have done shittons more for the Gamepad than what it does now. SD card support for portable “home console” gaming alone would’ve sparked so much interests in the Gamepad by consumers.

            1. outside of the “casual” remark, which I don’t think holds much water, I don’t think that is what made the Wii U a “failure”… I still think on the whole, bad marketing and a low amount of games at launch killed it. Did they run out of time and rush the system? maybe… if they waited till they had more games and launch with PS4 XBOX One, would it have made a difference? Not sure… it might have helped if they had the 3rd party support, but then they would have had to make it more powerful, which they should have… I think it was a mistake, even if I enjoy the console very much

    2. Thtas because they didnt think of any of what you said when Project Café was in R&D. They just wanted the console to be slightly powerful than the PS3.

    3. Can’t really say Sony did it better because Vita is just as much of a failure as Wii U so who’s gonna spend $250 on a portable, scaled down PS3 with ridiculous ass priced memory cards (instead of opting for SDs which 3DS was more than smart enough to go for) and a gaming library that’s 90% of PS3 games but watered down? Who’s gonna note that shit anyway besides very few PSP fans fooling themselves to think it’s great?

  6. And yet, they hardly use that shit as far as its NFC for Amiibo. Black Ops 2 was the only game that cleverly used it in ways that even I didn’t know it would: Act as a second display and using its built in sensor to dual-use Wii Remote; two controllers working as one without a drop of performance which is fucking impressive for a 1GB RAM console to do (I know it has 2, talking about usage)

Hell, they can use the 3DS now to do the same shit, making Gamepad virtually pointless. It has NFC, it can connect and share with Wii U, its battery life doesn’t suck, I bet it can dual display well enough without sacrificial needs on the newer models, it has accelerometer. It’s almost no different from Gamepad but it has more functions and benefits. IDK WTF Nintendo was thinking of that shit but it would’ve save them a lot of trouble just to stick with the 3DS to do the Gamepad’s job that it failed to do.

    1. I honestly forgot the gamepad had NFC untillnyou mentioned it. It would be cool if you could scan your credit card or something to make payments on the eshop or some bs. Ugh… So much potential Nintendo…

      1. Credit/Debit cards don’t have NFC technology in them. BUT for the 3DS, you can however save your card information and even turn the system into a scannable wallet and use the device via NFC scan to pay for something at NFC checkout machines or even on the Gamepad itself like for Wii U eShop purchases. That also would’ve expanded the two systems together for more home-portable console interactivity. Again, another missed opportunity by Nintendo because all they can think about is attracting dumbass casuals with fucking toys.

        1. I think he’s referring to the idea that Nintendo could have used a system similar to what credit cards, ATM machines, & registers use. But as usual, Nintendo wanted to make their own device for some weird reason.

    2. yeahhh except then you’d need a 3ds to play splatoon, captain toad, star fox, mario maker and any other games that utilise the game pad… Not everyone can afford two game systems. I can but Im not everybody. Does Nintendo really need another excuse for ppl to leave? Wtf I need to buy a handheld to play all these console games how shitty is that?? That would be really dumb

      1. I know that not every can afford two systems but in retrospect, Gamepad was almost as pointless as Kinect. The 3DS could’ve been its partner add-on as a controller instead while there’s a standard controller which should’ve had a built in headphone jack for voice chat (if earphones have a mic) and not only that, universal account system would’ve been more possible by now.

Hell, I got a good question: would you buy a $100 3DS that lasts several hours each charge, NFC for payment/Amiibo use, cameras for face chat/pictures/videos, where you can share data/games between consoles, play all of its portable GB games on the go/at home and use it as a controller/2nd display or a $100 XXXL Gamepad with shitty 3-5 battery, face chat that nobody uses, touch screen that’s hardly used, no rear camera, built in sensor bar that’s hardly used if not at all, too large for many to hold and doesn’t have its own storage to store/share data/games?

        1. Without the Gamepad, I most likely would not have bought the Wii U. Now I’m just one person but it is part of the reason I bought the Wii U. Sometimes, for people who having been gaming for atleast 30 years now, you need different ways to play. Without the Wii, PS Move, Kinect, and Gamepad, I feel like I’ve been playing the same way since Atari. Not all people are at that stage in their gaming, I can see their point in the matter. It is hard to please customers, ask any company including market leaders.

          1. Then you’re a damn fool buying a console for a fucking controller that can’t last 3 hours without remaining plugged and charged but not the console for what it may offer. People just want good gaming and for the games to evolve themselves, not just the controllers which are just an accessory to play the game. Wii Remote did change the rules but that’s as far as gaming can go. VR is a fad that’ll produce headaches unless it’s something like in Yu-Gi-Oh offering realism-like experience in a virtual world. 3D on 3DS can be entertaining sometimes if utilized in the right hands which are very few. Otherwise, controllers are just tools and the games are what gamers worry more than anything else.

            1. Speaking of Gamepad’s weak battery life, i cant believe after testing the life span in R&D they didnt think about improving the battery as it came closer to launch. Nintendo was actually stupid enough to approve that through R&D for production. And stupid enough to alprove a console that depends on a 2.5 hour battery life. They actually approved that in R&D.

              1. They rushed that shit out instead of giving the system time to patch, improve and give third parties some time to work on their ports with Wii U, maybe even rename it because the name is fucking stupid as Wii’s was silly. No wonder everyone didn’t buy this thing.

            2. Me being a fool would be playing the same way I did over 30 years ago. You can’t comprehend my decision because you are not me. I look at the complete package and the gamepad was part of the complete package. I have played games in a way I had not played in the past. Wonderful 101 would be a game I would not have bought if no gamepad. I would not have enjoyed NintendoLand without the gamepad. I would not have been able to play so many game off tv while I watch tv or on the computer to maximize my time. In any generation of consoles, I could not do that. Something, I cannot do on XboxOne or PS4 which is why I have delayed purchasing them but I still can play them whenever I want being that I have access to them. As for the battery life, I have to charging cords and can easily plug them in while I’m playing and it changes nothing for me.

            1. There are a lot of people that own a Wii U but don’t own a 3DS. A very small sample size would be me, my friend, and my nephews.

              1. Only 10 million bought but odds are that only few to several still hold it (still moronic) compare to 60+ million 3DSs sold which odds are 80% still holds on, far more than Wii U can grasp.

Nice try but again, Wii U is an epic failure.

    3. weeeell, nice to see my good friend. Nintendo had a big trouble since the gamecube, no matter how good the games are, most of the users left and migrated to playstation. My opinion is they had to make the wii to stay relevant, so they tried to call the casuals (like you) to their territory, motion controls are not for everybody, so while they won new audicence, some left.
they have to do things like the wiimote and the gamepad to stay relevant, the gamepad is not appealing, it makes you think of a tablet and i am sure a casual like you owns a tablet.
I love my Wii U, but i agree with people about the company’s problems. they should not abuse the innovation, they lost the war THANKS to it.

      1. I doubt he’s a casual. If he was, I think he wouldn’t be bothering with what he actually does on this site & would have just left already to play cell phone games like all the other casuals. Then again, you’re probably just calling him a casual to see if you can get under his skin again. >.<

  7. Using the gamepad as a differnt view into the game world is a great idea, but the WiiU hardware hardly supports it. Visual go way below its own standards whenever it tries to render two ‘full’ viewpoints.

  8. the gamepad isnt one dimentional ITS MULTI FUNCTIONAL

  10. Oh man Nintendo you guys must be smoking some good stuff. One of the main reasons the system is such a failure is because of the gamepad. So you have two games that utilize it and all of a sudden it is innovation. Now Mario Maker is actually a good example but Starfox….really? Did it not occur to you that you could but a cockpit view on the main screen which means that the cockpit view on the gamepad is pretty pointless. Stop trying to be different no one gives a fuck about how different you are. I mean Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze did not even display anything on the gamepad.

    1. EVERY GAME IS DIFFERENT DOES A MECHANIC USE THE SAME TOOL EVERY TIME HE REPAIRS A CAR IDIOT

THE GAMEPAD THE WII REMOTE THE PRO PAD ARE TOOLS

      EACH TOOL HAS ITS USES

      YOUR SMOKING CASUAL CRACK

          1. As I recall the PS1 kicked the N64’s ass the PS2 wiped the floor with GameCube the Wii was just a fad and the PS4 makes the Wii U look like a joke. However, I still LOVE NINTENDO GAMES. Just saying the gamepad is a failure.

              1. Is it really wrong though? The Wii didn’t sell because it was an amazing console tailored for people who are passionate about gaming, it sold so well because it catered to casuals and children.
It’s true that the Wii was a huge success from a financial standpoint, no doubt, but in terms of quality? I don’t really think so, honestly. Compare the game libraries of the PS1, N64, PS2, or even PS3 to the Wii’s library, and you’ll see a huge difference. Sure, the Wii had great games like MK, SSB, Zelda TP, DK, Mario Galaxy and Xenoblade but there really isn’t all that much more to its library as far as quality goes, I personally believe. It was, unfortunately, shovelware and casual games for the (considerably) most part.
The Wii was a fad, and definitely not known for the quality of its library (well, not in a positive sense, at least); the sales of the WiiU are somewhat proving it, as they show that a significant majority of Wii owers were casuals indeed, who had no deeper interest in video games, and so, didn’t feel the need to upgrade to the Wii’s successor.
You actually don’t need to be a fanboy to see that.

                1. You are wasting your time with Brandon, Namie. I’ve tried my best to explain to him why the Wii was bad in the long run but he won’t budge & continues thinking the Wii was a huge success all around. And people like him will say the same about the Wii U because of it still making a proft, ignoring the fact it is a failure in the bigger scheme of things. Hopefully the Wii U is a big wake up call to Nintendo as they make the NX on par with the competition. Sadly, I won’t hold my breathe on that hope coming true because Nintendo has let a majority of hardcore gamers down before.

                  1. Yea, in most situations it’s pointless to try to explain that kinda things, I suppose. But sometimes I just can’t help myself, hah.
And I agree, hopefully Nintendo learned their lesson with the WiiU, so we can see better results with the NX. But it’s as you’ve said, Nintendo has already disappointed and lost many of their loyal supporters, and that could turn out to have a bigger effect on them than it might seem.
I just think it would be appreciated by many if they actually tried to give people a console worthy to compete on the market, targeted at the “core” gamers. But then again, that’s what they had promised us with the WiiU back in the time, and we can clearly see how it turned out.
But oh well, all we can do at this point is wait and see. As trusting rumours and speculations won’t take us anywhere, waiting is the only answer. :)

                    1. Same here. I try my best to just ignore some of these idiots but just can’t help it. Trying to get people to see the error of their ways is a thankless job most of the time.

It’s easy to believe in the rumors & speculation when the only person that can tell us the facts aren’t even talking to us & letting us stew in our angst, so I don’t blame some people for buying every rumor & speculation. Now if they refuse to believe otherwise when the facts are finally presented, then we have a problem.

  11. Am I the only one who utterly hates the game pad and is sick Nd tired of Nintendo’s obsessions with adding gimmicks to their consoles (“”innovation””)?

    CASUALSSSSS

  13. I ONCE SEEN A PLAYSTATION FAN TRYING TO WII REMOTE A FPS HE WAS WAVING HIS ARMS AROUND

    THESE PEOPLE ARE RETARDED

  14. So if its the only thing that innovates the Wii U, then why didnt they think of 3 extra Gamepads when Project Café was in R&D? That was stupid.

    1. Also, doesn’t the Wii U allow for one Gamepad to be connected? I don’t like the idea of one person getting that control while others use whatever. If you notice, the whole 5 player game mode with four people running from the fifth person isn’t there at all. It’s like, no one was interested in it. Has any game even utilized it at all?

  15. And they only big example is of Gamepad being “innovative” is Star Fox 64 remake #2 with its R-Wing and Cockpit view? Seriously? A transforming plane (Transformers) and a fucking FPS cockpit view (virtually in every flight video game and simulator program in existence)? Pathetic Nintendo.

  16. STILL WAITING FOR SONY FANS TO TELL US AL THE AAZING TINGS DUALSHOCK 4 LIGHTBULB HAS DONE FOR GAMING,APPS,WEB AND THAT POINTLESS TOUCH THINGY

GANEOAD FUCKING RAPES DS4 AS DOES PRO PAD AS DOES WII REMOTE AND CHUCK

  17. It’s true. But notice it’s the consoles without anything new that sells lol. So logic dictates if the NX is just a stronger Wii U it should sell better the next time? Seriously though…Nintendo keep doing new stuff.

  18. Well if Starfox was revealed at launch to be coming back on Wii U…it would have sold 20 million wii U’s but now it will only sell 10 million consoles. But that’s not bad.

    1. The Wii U is at 10.1 Million right now. It looks like a 15 Million Unit Seller at best at this point.

  19. The main problem with the Gamepad? It wasn’t advertised at all. With your new Controller, you should really be pushing out to everybody what it is and what you can do with it. Neither of which Nintendo did with the Wii U Gamepad, but they did extensively for the Wii…

    1. I imagine their advertising on TV should have started off with “NEW NINTENDO CONSOLE WITH NEW GAMEPAD CONTROLLER.” Then show the uses for it and now it has been out for 2 and 7 months, they can show the different games and how the controller works. This would have solved confusion and show what the gamepad is about.

  20. dualshock 4 with a usless lightbulb and touchy pad VS

GAMEPAD -WII REMOTE PLUS-NUNCHUCK-PRO PAD-CLASSIC PAD PRO-GAMECUBE PAD

WE CAN SEE CLEARLY PS4 IS RETARDED

  21. Nintendo was lucky to figure out how to develop games in HD this gen, let alone use the gamepad creatively…

I want them to give the gamepad Idea another go, when it’s not being drug down by a developer that started experimenting with HD game development AFTER their console launched. x.x
I’m looking at you Nintendo…more like glaring.

    1. I agree with you but until they could figure out the gamepad, they could have use more inspiration from the 3DS. Maybe they did use some inspiration, I don’t know. It’s hard to say what is going on in a company that I am not part of.

  22. The funny thing about all of this is that it IS innovative, but it’s way underused. A lot of fans think this too. What’s even funnier is if they utilized it MORE, people would then whine that it’s being forced on us and is just a gimmick. Some people ejust can’t be happy. :/

    1. ITS NOT EITHER PRIME OR SECONDERY, ITS JUST THERE NO ONE SAID IT WAS THE PRIMARY CONTROLLER

WHO THE FUCK DOESNT OWN WII REMOTES AND CLASSIC PADS OR GO OUT BUY A pro pad STOP MAKINGTHINGS UP

      THIS IS WIIU’S PROBLEM IGNORENCE

      1. You’re an idiot. It is indeed primary if you need it to fucking access the damn Wii U settings. Do you ever shut the fuck up? You’re one of the worst fanboys on this freaking site. I’d rather see eminem123! & Brandon Hardacre over you & I can’t even stand their crap half of the time.

  23. I’m getting my kicks from reading comments on this article.

Doesn’t seem Nintendo would win either way or be able to ever do enough for some people when it comes to innovations like the Wii U GamePad. People just set unrealistically high expectations for the company. It’s sad, really.

Yes. The Wii U Gamepad is under-utilized for third-party games. That much is a FACT. But no one in their right mind would buy a Wii U for third party games; it IS relevant in gaming as a system for this gen, but that is only for first-party content, and this gen is by far the worst gen we’ve had in gaming since the video game crash ended with the NES release of Super Mario Bros.

Could the GamePad be better utilized? Yes, it absolutely can be. Do I think it’s curtain call for the Wii U? No. I don’t think Nintendo has used the Wii U to its full extent yet to end its life with the release of the NX in 2016-2017.

Games like Splatoon, Star Fox Zero, Super Mario Maker, Mario Kart 8, and The New Legend of Zelda are standing testaments to that fact that the Wii U still has a lot of steam and potential in it. I think the console needs an overhaul and price cut more than anything else: a “New” Wii U, per se, like what happened with the 3DS: a system with enhanced specs and overall better performance that would allow for more features to be utilized, such as two Wii U GamePads to be used at once (something promised since launch that has still never happened).

Improve the RAM to be about 4 GBs, with 1GB used for the OS and the rest for games. Sell that new console at $299.99 with a game, $249.99 without one, with the option of a trade-in for current Wii U owners to get it at a much less cost over at GameStop (just like the N3DS deal). Have games made exclusively for that new model of the Wii U while still supporting the older model with software as well and by lowering its price to $199.99 with a game, and $149.99 without one.

Congratulations. You can now sit back and watch people come in droves to buy your system, Nintendo.

Seriously, though…I have a feeling that the NX is not a home console or portable system, but a third platform altogether for gaming. I do think the two devices AMD was working on are likely for both the NX and a new version of the Wii U because I doubt Nintendo wants to show fans that they are abandoning the fledgling console. It’d hurt their already-damaged reputation, if they did, and people would be skeptical about buying the NX as a result of that.

    1. I also want to add their are games like Rodea the Sky Soldier, Xenoblade X, Project Treasure, and Sonic and Mario at the Olympics 2016 as well.

      1. None of those games are system-sellers. Smash 4 and Hyrule Warriors I didn’t include because they’re multiplatform.

        1. You bring up a good point. As for Hyrule Warriors, it ceased to be able to be a system seller the moment it got a 3DS port.

        2. It is not only about system sellers. All games contribute to why a person purchase a system. It is the collection of games. That is why I added them. To show it is more than just those games.

          1. He’s got a point, though. Why get a 300 dollar Wii U for Hyrule Warriors & Smash, both rounding up to 120-130 bucks, if you can just get a 200 dollar n3DS for them where the games both come for around 80-90 bucks? The cheap gamer that doesn’t have a Wii U will obviously go for the cheaper system & cheaper games.

            1. It depends on what people like. I don’t enjoy handheld gaming while someone else may enjoy it. It is all about taste. All games count to what make a system attractive. There are games like Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2. There are games like Fatal Frame 5 and Xenoblade X that are not on the n3DS. Any game can be a system seller to a certain person. There are certainly some games that are great system sellers which he did mention. To a JRPG gamer, they may buy the Wii U just because of Xenoblade X. Also, I was agreeing with his statement about having more steam. More games on the way show that it has more for people to play.

    2. YOUR MAKING SENSE BUT ID SAY WE NEEDVA NEW WIIU WERE THE GAMEPAD IS A HANDHELD A TRUE CONSOLE-HANDHELD BUNDLE…

EXAMPLE A WIIU WITH A SHRUNK WIIU GPU OVERCLOCKED AND A NEW ARM CPU A SUPER WIIU

WTH 4GB RAM SAY 2X POWER 3X RAM IN-GAME, THEN A GAMEPAD THATS A HANDHELD THAT HAS A DOWNSCALED EXACTLY THE SAME CHIPSET FOR SAY
540P PLUS RESOLUTION OF THE SAME GAMES

THEN IN DUAL MODE YOU HAVE SUPER WIIU POWER PLUS HANDHELD POWER,

    3. First they should install a universal account system. Otherwise, if Gamestop won’t let us transfer our Wii U data to the NX in the store, most will miss out on the deal.

      1. That is definitely a huge possibility as the online service DeNA is working on will likely funcion as the new Nintendo Network. It is going to work with all models of the NX, Wii U, and 3DS as well as the PC, Tablets, and Smartphones.

  24. THE INDUSTRY IS NOT ABOUT GAMING ITS ABOUT ‘””””INDUSTRY”””

TE INDUSTRY EXISTS IN A GROUND HOGBDAY

A GAME IS A BUNCH OF CUT SCENES WITH DUALSHCK PLAY IN BETWEEN THIS IS THE PROBLEM INDUSTRIALIZATION

  25. Reincarnated Sasori Obinna: The Divine Puppet

It’s true and I hope the NX has a touch screen of some type (only smaller) because games like Splatoon call for it. More like Dual shock 4 size with a color screen (that you can turn off as opposed to a black touch pad) an iPhone sized screen would be perfect and would go hand in hand with their mobile games, heck even better if it will use 4g and portable with actual buttons and joystick for on the go, or detachable if you just want to take a flat mini pad. Come home home and it’s a fully functional pad for the NX home console. That would be sweet and work amazingly with Nintendo mobile games. That real innovation ya ?

  26. Yeah, it’s innovative but seriously whats the point of making something innovative if you can’t think of anyithing innovative to do with it. I could easily think of a lot of things that they could’ve done with the gamepad.

  27. I’ve actually never liked the Gamepad. It’s bulky, and makes my hands ache. Using the Gamepad to play Pikmin 3 was a nightmare. I never could get the hang of it. The Wii remote/nunchuck is SO much better for Pikmin.

    1. any self respectinggamer plays pikmin with a wii remoteplus and nunchuck
twin anolog isnt suited to pikmin wii remote plus OWNS IT

CONTROLLERS ARE TOOLS USE THE CURRECT TOOL

  28. lol. Calling the gamepad “innovative”. The only appealing thing about it was off-screen play, and they never even tried to highlight that feature. Otherwise it was a glorified map screen, and several of their big games didn’t even take advantage of it, which is why the Pro Controller rose up and became preferable in many regards.
    Pathetic, Nintendo.

  29. It’s an innovation i could do without honestly..
I find myself most the time .. if i HAVE the option to not use it, i don’t..opting to use the pro controller…

  30. At first glance it would be easy to think that but after seeing that Crackdown 3 tech demo. I’d say that’s easily the most innovative thing this generation. An Xbox One drawing on the power of 9 other Xboxes was amazing. That’s an experience that can’t be found on any other consoles, or high end pcs for that matter.

  31. I could only laugh at the second quote, who does Nintendo think they’re fooling? It seems to be only themselves.
