Xbox’s Phil Spencer Has A Wii U And Really Likes Splatoon

Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, has spoken briefly about Nintendo to Eurogamer at this year’s Gamescom event in Cologne, Germany. Spencer says that he doesn’t believe that there’s a first party studio that has the strength that Nintendo IP has and says that they are an inspiration to the team over at Xbox. He also said that people downplay just how many units the Wii U has sold.

Do you think exclusive games are necessary to sell hardware? It traditionally would seem that way, but if that’s the case, surely more people would have the Wii U, as that’s got the best exclusives out there.

Phil Spencer: On the Wii U, I think people downplay how many units they’ve sold. I’ve got a Wii U, I think there’s some great games on there. I think Splatoon’s a really nice game and I don’t think there’s a first-party out there that has the strength of IP that Nintendo has. They’re always a beacon to me when I look at what it means to build a first-party portfolio of products, they’ve done a great job.

For us, having exclusives, especially on the platform side as we continue to innovate, being able to have studios that push the envelope of what’s possible, and partnering them with a platform and the hardware teams, I think it’s a magical equation for coming up with things that aren’t possible. We sit around, the Xbox leadership team, I’ve got Kudo, Shannon Loftis and Bonnie with Halo, the whole Xbox platform leadership team and we all think about the opportunities of moving hardware and service and content together. Really, the only way to have that in such a tight loop, I think, is to have a strong first-party portfolio to try things to push. It’s not only critical from a sales perspective, but also for innovation for what our platform’s about. I love sitting at that platform, and the ideas that come out of anywhere and seeing the different franchises grabbing on to something and say yeah, we should try to go do this in Forza, we should try do this in Minecraft. It’s a great opportunity.

Why would he be mad? We’ve infiltrated the enemy base. I was hoping he’d start giving orders about attacking Microsoft’s main fuel generators or soemthing.

            1. I'm a Boss Ass Bitch

Idk what the hell goes through that fuckers head. He could be a non nintendo hater undercover, waiting to infiltrate their base. The world may never know.

      1. Lol you sound like a f*cking idiot. Do you really think these top executives care about this fanboy sh*t? Man you kids are morons.

            1. Seems like you’re the only one that cares about them enough to remember it. Genius. .

Oh wait, “leader” of an imaginary Nintendo base. What am I even typing.

            2. Nintendo Lieutenant Cereza

Would that be the time they tried to convince Wii U shoppers to buy and Xbone instead? That was at an official Nintendo event if I remember correctly.

          1. Actually, they don’t. Many of them from across companies are even close friends. One producer even INSULTED fanboys. They just want to make games and compete, not deal with petty squabbles that people like you try to make.

      2. Stranga you are just a pathetic lifeform who finds excuses to fanboy rant for Nintendo. You make me fucking sick. Your about as reliable as a down syndrome’s dick attempting to become erect….

          1. Not to mention he insulted some poor person with a mental disability they have no control over. Whoever is doing Church of Sasori should do the world a favor & pull a Hitler. If he’s trolling to get a laugh or rise out of people, he’s still a piece of shit that should kill itself.

      1. Grammar errors are the leastnof your problem. We don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about most of the time.

        1. Like Leastnof? The little town in Germany? We all have a problem, and that is you just adding to our problems.
But thumbs up for the correct use of “you’re”.

          1. I would bet he’s using a phone, considering that exact thing you pointed out happens to a lot of people.
It’s not even a error just an extra letter hit. So really your comment is pretty weak in reality.

            1. Correct. I’m on a phone and working…I try to correct my errors, but honestly, close enough is fine for me given I’m here strictly for entertainment purposes. :)

    >>>That Xbot Leader sure has the brains unlike his predecessors and Xbots>>>

    >>>He can’t fool me with his “honest” charades though>>>

        1. They absolutely do; the food industry and the gaming industry are both highly competitive, and his analogy is perfectly suitable

                >>>Glory is for the weak, frightened cretins that wants to get a “chance” of survival after they have been outsmarted and defeated by superior forces>>>

                1. Even superior forces search for glory. There is no a purpose without a goal no matter how small that goal is and that’sthe reason you will never take our planet!

                    >>>Then they are not superior but weak, glory is a self-righteous invention that the weak brainwashed themselves with to die as if they’ve accomplished something in their short and pointless lives when in the end, nothing matters>>>

Ugh the fucking tables have turned and I don’t fucking know how to reply to this, so I’m gonna call you bitch and be done.

                    1. Removeth this wretched cretin oldith assith computerical device-ith fromith thine threadith. Huur huuuur.

      1. I think he meants that they shouldn’t exist because of how despite you work for a certain company, you can still enjoy games from other platforms.

    1. They are not like Sony. Sure they copy but they do on things that they feel goes with their fanbase. There is a bigger chance that the copied game turns out to be Fatal Frame and Zelda.

    2. Turf War in Halo 5 confirmed! But instead of painting with your gun, the turf will be the blood left by the people you kill. And squid Master Chief DLC Inkoming!!!

          1. The one above is from Oreimo. My profile picture is from “Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist”. Lol.

    1. HollowGrapeJ beat me to it!
I was JUST about to write something like that after viewing the first half of responses.

  2. Phil Spencer is the best thing that’s ever happened to the Xbox brand. All you moronic children that think this is a ploy to somehow, gain traffic and sympathy are absolutely retarded. These top executives do not care about this fictitious console war, that you degenerates take so seriously.

  3. well his so great at his job xbox brand is in the red for 20 billion xbone already well over a billion down

more important does the casual turn of the gyro mouse bet he does FAGGOT

  4. Yeah, I have to say, I don’t own an xbox but I like this Phil Spencer guy. He composes himself very well, and he has said nothing to offend anybody- on the contrary, he has complimented Nintendo time and time again, but all the pretentious little pricks in these comment sections talking shit for no reason are just perfect examples of why the console war exists- much less as a cesspool of ignorance and idiocy.

Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft are all just big companies out for your money. There are no angels and there are no demons; just business.

    1. Boom, Roasted.

Someone with a brain? Did hell freeze over? What’s sad is its mainly one person perpetuating what you speak of. Most the other posters don’t seem to care. Just CCCC.

      1. Phil Spencer is the reason why I own a Xbox One as well as a Wii U, thanks to Iwata.

Nintendo fanboys/girls will never stop bitching even when someone complements Nintendo who are from outside of Nintendo.

    2. Phil is basically took a leap out of Iwata’s book, Gaming should be Fun, not about “who gets the most units sold”

  5. of course the bloke has a wii U and a PS4. He does not say his own a Wii U at home. He has to have a Wii U and a PS4 to look at what the competition doing. I would be surprise if Myamoto-san and his team don’t have a PS4 and a xbox one.

  6. Am I the only person who sees there are two sides to this coin? Is it possible, that Phil Spencer genuinely likes the game and admires Nintendo, but also SIMULTANEOUSLY wants to make good relations with Nintendo fanboys so that their hearts wont be hardened to Xbox? I can see the opportunistic side of it, but I think he just wants Xbox to be more like Nintendo in certian ways. And yeah, they have stole some hardware peripheral ideas over the years but they havent really stole any software concepts, just buying out Rare. I dont see the harm in his comments, people need to chill the fuck out.

  7. when consoles become cloud streaming service… i wonder if this god damned so called console war will end… because really… all that is left to bitch about are the games! oh wait.. i bet nintendo will have the only true console left by that point :P so i guess nintendo wins after all :D

  8. It’s sad that some people here think that this is supposed to be a console war when he’s playing anything that isn’t Xbox related.

  9. It’s really good to hear he doesn’t stick to just the platform the company he runs sells. I’m not a huge XBOX gamer, but I love both Nintendo and PlayStation. I can’t imagine not having both! XBOX’s exclusives just don’t draw me in as much as Nintendo’s and PlayStation’s.

  10. I don’t really care about the argument in the comments.

But I would really really like to know Spencer’s NNID so i can beat his ass at splatoon. ;)
