Miyamoto Talks About Possibly Collaborating With Hollywood For Future Projects

Video game publishers are jumping at the chance to have their video game properties turned into movies. We’ve got so many video game related movies coming that it is hard to keep track of them. One notable example is the Ratchet and Clank reboot for the PlayStation 4 which will launch alongside the movie. Now Shigeru Minamoto has said that they are looking at Nintendo’s role as an entertainment company and believe that movies based on their iconic IP could be the next big thing for the company.

“We’ve had, over the years, a number of people who have come to us and said ‘Why don’t we make a movie together—or we make a movie and you make a game and we’ll release them at the same time?’, “Because games and movies seem like similar mediums, people’s natural expectation is we want to take our games and turn them into movies. … I’ve always felt video games, being an interactive medium, and movies, being a passive medium, mean the two are quite different.”

“As we look more broadly at what is Nintendo’s role as an entertainment company, we’re starting to think more and more about how movies can fit in with that—and we’ll potentially be looking at things like movies in the future,”

        1. Uhh hello! Mother says if u truly beleve it mite just come tru! i want too beleve that pixer is gona make a mario bros movie and so it wil come tru my frend :3

  1. >>>Quadraxis will destroy entire civilizations in the Metroid movie then>>>

  2. I remember that one Metroid movie that the studio were asking money for to fund the project. Nintendo took that project down like a unwanted child.

  3. How about if Disney pay an equal amount of their own money to pay the animated film rights to Mario, Zelda and Pokemon, while Walt Disney Animation Studios can make them? How about that? Does that sound like a good idea? Maybe for a CGI-animated Mario movie? Having a Mario movie from Disney is my most wanted animated film for Disney to make it in the future. That’s just my opinion.

      1. I like both, but if it’s Dreamworks i don’t want Spielberg handing anything… the “How to Train…” group made the best films in the studio…

    1. That’d be good. But somehow, I don’t really want Disney to be the one to do it. Even though I know in the back of my mind that they’re the most qualified company.

  4. ecause games and movies seem like similar mediums, people’s natural expectation is we want to take our games and turn them into movies. … I’ve always felt video games, being an interactive medium, and movies, being a passive medium, mean the two are quite different.”

its not your feelings miyamoto its FACT yes gamesand movies are TWO COMPLEATLY DIFFERENT THINGS

ONE IS PASSIVE ONE IS INTERACTIVE

OFF COURSE TRYING TO EXPLAIN THIS TO SONY FANS IS IMPOSABLE

THEY THINK PRESSING TRIANGLE ON A DUACK SHOCK IN MOVIE QTE CUT SCENE IS VIDEO GAMING

ERM NO ITS NOT INDUSTRY THINKS ITS MAKING MOVIES NOT GAMES AGAIN THE PROBLEM

IS ALSO THE REAON NEW EGOLUTIONARY CONTROLLERS ARE IMPORTANT GAMS ARE NOT PASSIVE

PS4 XBONE AND THE FANS CAN TRY AND DESTROY GAMING AND REPLACING IT WITH SEMI INTERACTIVE MOVIES ALL THEY LIKE

DOESNT MAKE IT GAMING ITS NOT

SECOND SOUL A MOVIE NOT A GAME

THE ORDER A MOVIE NOT A GAME

DUALSHOCK A OUT DATED BUFFOONS CONTROLLER THAT QTE MOVIE FANS USE

THE INDUSTRY IS FULL OF THESE WANT TO BE MOVIE MAKERS ITS THE VERY REASON GAMINGBIS SO FUCKED UP

  5. As much i love Nintendo games, im afraid directors of the movie projects would just fuck it up, kinda like in this parody, just replace LOTR with Zelda, Metroid, StarFox etc. you get the idea, movie directors would just fail to capture what those IP´s are about.

    1. Yeah, Hollywood kinda knows how to fuck shit up, let’s just trust that Miyamoto will be as intrusive as he is with game development.

    2. And man, we don’t need a parody to see how LoTR got fucked up, we’ve got 9+ hours worth of Hobbit movies to teach us why shitty Hollywood greed ruins everything.

  6. If they’re serious about this, then the end is nigh. The moon is falling, the space colony ark is terminal, phazon is spreading again, andross has won, and bowser has put the princess in another dimension.

    1. Phantom Ganon was banished to a place between dimensions, since OoT was first 3D Zelda, i always wondered was the gap between dimensions where Phantom Ganon was sent a gap between 2D and 3D.

  7. If it ends up as a crossover (Super Smash Bros) akin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then by all means go for it.

  8. As long as it’s not Sony Pictures and any studios they own.

    How about these anime studios:
    Studio Ghibli for Zelda?
Production I.G. or Gainax for Metroid?
Toei or J.C. Staff for Mario?

    1. God no, not Toei, after what they’ve done to Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball I don’t trust them to draw even a 5-minute short of Kirby.

  9. After Sega announced that they’ll give their IP’s the Hollywood treatment (albeit with more horrid live action adaptions), Nintendo is finally jumping on the bandwagon? We all knew how “fantastic” the Super Mario Bros. movie was when it came out in the olden days.

    1. Except that movie wasn’t even being overseen by Nintendo themselves. Don’t use that movie as a defense why Nintendo doing this now is a bad idea. We got enough Zelda fans using the horrible CD-i Zelda games & cheesy Zelda cartoon as bullshit defenses why voice acting in Zelda would be bad when they know full fucking well Nintendo had nothing to do with the development of those. Nintendo has had more success with voice acting under their watch than they have failures. Other M is the exception, not the norm.

  10. It could work if Nintendo does it right. The only live action movies/shows should be Metroid and Legend of Zelda. You could opt to make them into 3D animations, but they would be the only IPs I could see being turned into live action movies/shows.

The rest should be 3D animations or 2D animations.

      1. It’s Zelda, though. Nintendo will be keeping a very, very close eye on the development of a live action Zelda movie so the chances of it ruining Zelda will be slim. In most cases, Zelda is more protected than even Mario himself.

      2. And if a live action Zelda movie franchise occurs & it follows it’s very own separate timeline, I think they could do amazing things with it.

  11. Give me a live action rated R, or PG-13 that pushes the boundaries of PG-13, Metroid movie franchise & a live action rated PG that pushes the boundaries of PG Zelda movie franchise & I’ll die happy. ESPECIALLY if they are both done right. Sadly, like with The Hobbit & Star Wars prequels which were entertaining & not much different from their predecessor movies, not everyone will be satisfied. Yes. I’m calling some Star Wars prequel haters nostalgia blind fanboys of the original Star Wars trilogy which was just as campy, if not even more so, than the prequels. (The prequels were good for what they were meant to do: tell the story of how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. Was it what most imagined would be how he became Darth Vader? No. Was it good enough? I like to think so & I know I’m not alone.)

    1. Oh dear. I might have just caused a backlash of upset Star War original trilogy fanboys to be mad at my opinion. Oh well. It is MY opinion, so if they don’t like it, tough.

      1. Wars* Fixed. I can’t believe I missed the s in that. It’s what I get for not proofreading my comments.
