Itagaki Responds To Devil’s Third Review Scores

Devil’s Third producer, Tomonobu Itagaki, has taken to Facebook to express his disappointment at the mixed review scores for his latest opus. However, Itagaki has thanked the fans that decided to take a punt and pick the Wii U title up. He says that he doesn’t believe that reviewers here in the west reviewed the game fairly. We gave the game a respectable 7/10 and you can read that, here.

Hey guys,
Thank you for playing our Devil’s Third.

I believe that those of you who actually have the game in your hands are more than satisfied with how interesting and fun the game is.

Unfortunately the scores we’ve been receiving in Europe are pretty awful.
Some of the criticism we’re getting is constructive and fair – I can accept that.
But in general, I’m going to guess that most of the people reviewing the game weren’t given a chance to evaluate it properly.

Just as one example, we designed the online multiplayer mode to be enjoyed together with tons of people, but it seems dozens of reviewers were only allowed to try the game in a closed environment.

That’s extremely unfortunate for everyone involved. As you can imagine, no one can effectively evaluate the playability of multiplayer games under these conditions.

For me though, I value the feedback you guys can offer much more.
Please enjoy the game for yourselves.
After that, let me know everything about what you’re thinking, so that we can make a better future.

Gamers, let’s build a future together smile emoticon
Thanks as always.

    1. I can’t believe the amount of damage control in this comment section and from the guy as well. The game maybe just plain sucks. When there are so many reviews that state the same things and so many low scores, something is wrong with the game. Any developer can say the same for their game and pretend like nobody got what the game is about and why it’s so amazing.

      1. Agreed. People seem to have forgotten about his super cocky statements rather quickly. All of a sudden, he’s a great guy who deserves a handshake? I don’t know about that.
Also, the double standards some people here seem to have are really funny, in my opinion. If it’s a Sony/Microsoft game getting bad reviews, the game definitely sucks balls, but if it’s an anticipated WiiU game that’s getting terrible reviews, people just didn’t “play it right”, and reviews don’t matter anymore. Hypocrites, a bunch of hypocrites.

        1. You’ve got it completely wrong. This guy is being respectful and mature about the situation, whether his game is bad or not (that’s not even what my comment was about). This site is filled with arrogant fanboys (from all sides)who are always out for blood, I honestly don’t even know why I bother commenting here anymore. And no, I’m not calling you a fanboy, as I have no way of knowing that but you’re completely misinterpreting my comment.

          1. He is being respectful and mature now, but what about all those conceited comments before this one? He was pretty much insulting people who gave his game bad reviews, acting like a spoiled child, so it’s kinda hard to believe he’s being genuine right now.
That being said, I wasn’t directly targeting you with my previous comment; there was no deep meaning behind me choosing to include your phrase in my comment. Might as well have replaced the word “handshake” with any other word people in the comments have used to praise the developer.
And don’t get me wrong, but if replies like the ones you’ve gotten now make you question why you still leave comments here, you really might be better off not commenting at all. Again, don’t get me wrong as I don’t mean to be rude, but I’m just saying that I believe these responses are relatively harmless, and if they already make you consider not commenting on this website anymore, you probably don’t want to get any other kinds of replies.

            1. Well excuse me then, I hadn’t seen his previous comments, so I guess my opinion was flat. Your comment in particular did come off has direct and hostile as the others, but I was just grouping them all together.

              1. It’s absolutely alright for you to think so, I do know I’m being direct, so I’m aware people might get offended. It would be silly to get upset about people not liking what I say or not agreeing with my opinion, especially when obviously targeting a certain group of people.

      2. Calm down. I never said the game was good (it may or may not be), just the way he handled it was very mature and respectful.

      3. What about the people who have the game that don’t agree with the reviews? Those people who play and enjoy games in the comment section of the facebook page where the post is from. Review scores tell me nothing about a game. The reviews tell me nothing about the game. When I play the game, that tells me about the game. I don’t follow anyone’s opinion of whether I should buy or play a game or not. Metacritic has the game at 41 score but users have it at 6.3. The users are enjoying the game more than the reviewers.

        1. Yeah, why would you listen to informed opinions. Reviews say nothing about a game unless it’s like a 9 or a 10. Then every fanboy is talking about the scores.

I’m sure Nintendo fanboys didn’t raise that score because they were butthurt and I’m also sure that all those people have better critical thinking and have put as much work into their reviews as professional reviewers do.

          1. Professional reviewers are just gamers. They have the same knowledge. There is no school for reviewing games. A 9 or 10 says nothing about a game. Plenty of 9 and 10 score game I didn’t like. I play games not review scores.

            1. There are people that have better critical thinking skills and there are people like you, fanboys, that could never be successful professional reviewers.

              1. Did you just call me a fanboy? I can be a professional reviewer. I enjoy reviews that are based on facts not opinion. Reviews have become opinions with scores. A review is facts about the game that a person play. Notice I have not attempted to call you a name. I am a fan of video games. I do not care the company that makes the games as long as I’m playing. It could atari, colecovision, and intellivision making the games and I would not care. So before labeling a person it is best to know the person better instead of speaking untrue words. Thank you for your opinion as I appreciate all types of input.

                1. Unfortunately, facts can also lead to console wars. For example: “X game runs in 1080P on PS4 but 720P on Xbox One.”

      4. It actually looks like another “love or hate” kind of game. I mean, it did get horrible scores, but at the same time Famitsu gave the game a 33/40, wich is pretty good for Famitsu standards, and I trust those guys (3 reviewers gave the game an 8 and the one left gave it a 9). Also, German and French reviews were generally good, not great, but more than decent.

Idk, it looks that its one of those games you need to play a demo of it or something to actually decide wether you want it or not. I just hope its not a ZombiU situation all over again, a game that was good but that people didn’t understand, expecting an action game.

  1. I agree with him 100%. I do respect opinions but I believe the media has damaged, to what I believe to be, such a awesome game on Wii U. Regardless of scores, fans who have bought the game have been pleased with it and they are having fun and that’s the main thing!

  2. Cuz we didnt get a zombie mode i wanted, they just miss the obvious for the game. 1 thing missing can break everything.

  3. most of the “media” loves to d ick riding sony, so Im not surprised they do this, is even something usual in these days and age.

      1. Actually they ARE! Have you not noticed how no one has the balls to not suck the dick of The Order 1886 in their reviews despite it being, y’know, GARBAGE?! Meanwhile Nintendo is nothing more than a target board for them to throw darts at. It’s bullshit! Wake up and face reality!

        1. OK dude. Fair point. To be honest. I didn’t realise The Order received so many positive reviews. I just saw something that resembled Arse Creed and immediately turned away. Here’s a thought tho. How about Splatoon. Again, so many positives for a game that is so far behind in terms of voice, online multiplayer and lack of story.
          Same same maybe ???

          1. Splatoon was whinned against pretty darn hard for no voice chat and still is even though the game pad and gameplay style generally negate the perceived negatives there of. It also has a better story mode that the majority of most online focused games and has very regular updates, big events to incentivize people coming back to play more. Whatever positive reviews Splatoon got it earned and continues to work hard to improve upon itself.

  4. seriously, don’t knock this game till you try it for yourself. I had the opportunity to play it this weekend and found it to be really fun. not it the same league as Metal Gear or Bayonetta by any means but highly undiserving of the reviews I have read so far. Maybe I did not get my expectations high because of some of the negative reviews I read prior but I was plesently surprised and I think most players will enjoy it if they don’t go into it expecting this to be an MGS killer but you should definitely not overlook this one because of all the negative reviews out there.

      1. It has some slow down and point in the single player (its inconsistent happens infrequently), doesn’t really hamper the experience by much, would be nice to see it patched out though. Overall the game is quite smooth.

    1. Few hitches but who cares. It’s a great game and very enjoyable. Something I’ve wanted to play for a very long time. Nintendo I think needed something like this on their systems. I’m sure we’ll be getting updates and that later on!

  5. I never listen to scores i dont give a dong they usually dont enjoy what i enjoy and this game is FREAKING FUCKING AMAZING if you are a fan of japanese action game.
FUCK SCORES AND FUCK CORPORATED REVIEWS.

  6. game sucked.

    NO VOICE CHAT IN 2015
    NOT 1080p IN 2015
    NOT 60FPS IN 2015
    PS2 GRAPHICS IN 2015

ofcourse the reviews will expose the truth..worst exclusive ever on a Nintendo console

    DEVILS TURD sucks.

    1. Personally, my main gripe is the technical aspects of the game.

      – Frame rate drops
      – Occasional stuttering
      – Rag doll physics causing bodies to end up in weird positions
      – stiff aiming (which also gets worse with the above issues)

I love the game itself. Bosses are great and relatively difficult, and the levels are varied in environments and pacing.

  7. The game can still sell well among Wii U owners. The scores mean NOTHING if people are willing to pick up the title for themselves.

I truly believe this game got snubbed of decent reviews in the West. It is a shame, to be 100% honest.

  8. I still believe that if Nintendo allowed XSeed to publish the game, NA will probably have this game earlier.

Anyway I’ll pick this unless XCX’s Special Edition comes locally…

    1. Maybe because of the bugs and glitches that’s why Nintendo Of America decided to delay it til December. Valhalla Games will most likely (or should) have plans to release a major patch that will address all of the problems and who knows maybe even in that patch they’ll have to where you can have an option to play the game at 30fps or 60fps. Now I know that’s a bit of a stretch but judging by the harsh criticsm that Itagaki is receiving it could very well happen

    1. Fuck that exclusiveless ass console that’s basically only a fucking 3rd party multiplat/indie box. Wii U, 3DS and a gaming PC is the best gaming combination to go with this gen……….bitch

    2. What if I buy Metal Gear Solid 5 on PC instead? Would that make you happy? Also, why can’t I buy both games? Why do people deal in absolutes?

    1. Bloodbourne is good but not worth buying a PS4 for it alone, I’ll wait at least until Nier new project is released, maybe more depending on how it looks, everything else I want is on PC.

        1. It is okay people are enjoying it. People can enjoy multiple games. That is why we play video game (s) and not just a video game.

    1. Most games are not as good as developers say but should they just say their game is okay. You will have fun but nothing groundbreaking.

        1. As I said most developers do that. How many times have you heard the game will change the industry from a developer and it has been true.

            1. Yeah, industry changing stuff just happens. Anytime, I hear someone say it will, I ignore that part and just focus on what I like and don’t like about the game.

    1. PS4 and Wii U suck… but it’s cheaper.

Especially when you use special coupons, my Wii U was only a bit over $200.00 and I got it in 2013 at Target b/c I had a special voucher, $100.00 bucks off of anything.

      1. They are cheaper only because they’re weaker. Like I always say, you get what you pay for. And $700 can get you something decent if you build a PC.

  9. everyone that thinks this is a good game is a retarded biased bitch, amd anyone who this wii u is better then ps4 is a faggot, yeah im looking at you Gayenthusiast

PS4 is getting full 3rd party support and will have more exclusives then Wii U by 2016,heck infact every game that’s released on ps4 since 2015 isn’t on Wii U,Nintendo themselves even know that Ps4 is a better console,METAL GEAR SOLID 5,got released on Xbox360 a 10 year old console, but isnt on Wii U lol,Wii U is the worst console in gaming history, stop damage controlling faggots

    1. That is not true. Smaller third party developers such as indies have made games for both. Disney infinity, lego dimensions, skylanders, and lego jurassic park is on both consoles. There is your proof that your words are not credible and you didn’t even think about what you was saying. Nice attempt to get people upset but no one is buying it.

    2. You people are so fucked in the mind. People have there own opinions and can play what they like on any console or pc. I personally cant stand the crapbox betamax. And i don’t think the PS4 is all that. Just be happy with your choice and ignore everyone else.
