Miyamoto Feels It Is Time To Move The Mario Bros Series In A New Direction

Prolific video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto has told TIME that he believes it is now time to move the Super Mario Bros series in a new direction. Miyamoto also revealed that he and the team are working on the future of the Super Mario Bros series which seems likely to debut on the Nintendo NX once that’s released.

“Doing this now at the 30th anniversary [of Super Mario Bros.] is really putting some more of that creativity into the players. But at the same time, we as the developers feel that it’s time for us to move in a new direction, and we’re preparing to work on the future of Super Mario from here on.”

          1. Yeah, I’d be completely happy if Mario made something new while another team made HD sunshine, HD 64, and new super Mario games as quick filler games until the next new Mario.

    1. i love hearing about all these “great” new games coming to the nx well they basically are telling me fuck you wii u owner. well nintendo fuck you and nx too.

      1. You must be dumb or something if you feel that way… i LOVE Smash bros, Bayonetta 2, Mario 3D World, Hyrule Warriors, Mario Kart 8, Rayman Legends, Splatoon, and coming soon Xenoblade… Wii U has the best catalogue and exclusives of this generation. So don’t say stupid things.

          1. No, that is hardly all. Simply a listing of pretty great games. That said, that incomplete list is longer than anything on the other consoles, not counting unplayable trash.

      2. I feel honestly like asking you this: what do you wanna do more with the Wii U now? We’re probably having pretty much everything we can get on it, the last couple good prods before it’s done for good (or for the most part). Nintendo really needs to get NX right. It’s the only way to be sure. They have a solid online system now. They just need to perfect it, i.e. get vchat right, for crying out loud, we’re getting closer and closer to 2020! It is sometimes a crucial part of a game nowadays (I’m looking @ you, Splatters), it just works so much better.

Please… Nintendo new president, just don’t f*ck this up. Maybe if he’s really business oriented, we’ll finally be able to see the use of some real fuckin’ hardware in a Nintendo console once again before we all die. Please…

  1. Nintendo is My Blood Reborn

I’d like to see a Mario Galaxy 3 first and foremost, the 3D enviroment really makes for great platforming

  2. sorry but what do thay mean by new direction? do thay mean just a new 3d mario game (like what sunshine was to 64) cus really at this point what ‘direction’ has mario not gone in at this point? (besides the obvious fps ofc)

    1. Considering miyamotos defense of federation force, this could mean it changes genre or at least formula completely. I doubt it though, it’s more likely to be a new 3d mario game.

              1. No. Each of the 7 kids have different boss fight styles, abilities and personalities. Bowser Mini Me is basically an exact clone of his own father from Yoshi’s Island; a dull, bratty pain in the ass. Not to mention Bowser Mini Me never had the balls to fight Mario directly unlike the 7 kids with magic wands, air stomps, chase and shell spin attacks plus spitting fire balls. Bowser Mini Me hides in his mechs as they do all of the work. Koopalings fight Mario with their bare turtle paws and magic. The difference is this: Koopalings actually fight, starred in 2 classic 2D Mario games, among the best platforming games in history, had their own cartoons (oddly renamed for some reason) and we grew up with them and loved them. Few a cool/badass, adorable/witty and Wendy..kinda questionable. Bowser Mini Me mimic exactly like Bowser with no difference, runs away and whines like a huge BITCH and his introduction..not exactly as welcoming. Imposters Mario by framing him for a crime that the dumbass villagers had not yet realize the real guy wasn’t even there yet if they knew he’s coming with Peach (Sounds too familiar to the movie “The Fugitive” by Harrison Ford) and his “boss fights” is basically chasing after his dumbass with a water cannon until he slips and cries and then a mech fight that only stays in one place, breathes fire and shoot Bullet Bills..just like every other mech fights in Mario games.

    2. Perhaps a true open world mario, in contrast to sm64 (which nintendo never really considered to be an open world game to begin with)

  3. I knew something was up, called it days ago. There’s been way to much random info dropping going on about it’s history and facts.

  4. Perhaps they are taliking Toys, puzzles on stores, maybe furniture, apparel, Pixar motion pictures, the learning SYSTRAN más For kids etc the possibilities are endless.

    1. HollowGrapeJ (The Legendary Video Game Master And Anime Wizard)

I wonder why Nintendo didn’t just do that! Sounds like a much better idea. XD

      1. That would take a lot more resources than a sprite base Maker. Plus we would be very limited in what we would be able to do and I fairly doubt the Wii U would be able to handle a game like that. Hell the XBO chokes every now and then when creating huge worlds in Project Spark.

              1. I’m glad you didn’t waste your time because I immediately lost interest in your answer as soon as I commented.

                  ||Now I’m someone called “Kallum S” too? Aren’t you all so bewildered and sightless beyond measure……

              2. “Insolvent”? Sounds like you are glitching again you roleplaying robot tool. Can everyone on this website please shame this kid into exile once again? He doesn’t even have a freaking gaming PC.

                      ||All of you suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, despair, illusions and the use of profanity to make your worthless arguments for something that is already doomed……

          1. Obviously you don’t understand anything about porting games to PC. “Solve itself,” really? Are you that stupid? Every PC is different, and even with top end PCs you get the most bugs of any system. Of course you wouldn’t understand this because you aren’t a PC gamer. Just a flipfloping tool who decided to jump ship and fanboy a different “console” because everyone hated you as Nintendo Commander. Well guess what, we still hate you. Take your fake PC fanboy bullshit to a different website.

              ||If you are that angry with this “Commander” drone, then take it with him since obviously he made you rotten to the core with obsession and pain……

      2. I honestly think due to hardware. I think it would be too much for the Wii U to handle and that ain’t a hit at Nintendo of course. Also i saying that, only Nintendo know their own system the best so they probably could pull it off. The game would be massive and it could be what they have planned for “NX” perhaps. We will see soon I hope. I prefer the 3D games anyways myself compared to Super Mario Bros. :)

            1. Xenoblade Master Ridley X3

I wish Nintendo would do both for once. Make a sequel to Super Mario Sunshine & make a 3rd Galaxy while also doing a 3rd game that is a sequel to Super Mario 64 but in a true open world setting. Oh wait. Then some people would bitch about Mario getting too many games in such a short amount of time. Which would be stupid since each game will be wildly different in the gameplay & not nearly as bad as the New Super Mario Bros sub-franchise.

      1. Xenoblade Master Ridley X3

If this game is an evolution of Super Mario 64 as it becomes a true open world Mario game, I’ll be perfectly happy with that over Super Mario 64. But that’s a big if since this is Nintendo… It’ll be nice if they surprise us in a good way for once, though.

        1. Yes, I would really like that. I would buy the NX just to play it. Its definitely been a while where Nintendo has actually gave us a wow factor.

          1. Xenoblade Master Ridley X3

good wow factor.* Fixed it for you as Federation ChibiShitForce is a wow moment. Not all wow moments are good, sadly.

            1. Sad, but true. Nintendo is loosing their touch and they need to fix their errors before it’s too late. We wouldn’t want another E3 like the one from this year. I hope they do an actual E3 presentation.

              1. Xenoblade Master Ridley X3

The first Nintendo E3 Digital Event was awesome, too. I guess they just got too arrogant this year with it.

    1. I personally would like to see a BIG change. Maybe a more realistic looking Mario game, something completely left-field. Maybe an augmented reality type of game…

    2. Give us a massive open world game with a hub world and mini levels and whatnot scattered out. Like N64 but on a much larger scale.

        1. 2.5D isn’t Mario Maker. Mario Maker is 2D.
2.5D is games like Super Mario 3D World, where you’re not really following behind mario like you are in the 3D games such as 64, Sunshine, Galaxy.

            1. The new series is also a 2D game. This is based on dimensions.

The new series might have 3D backgrounds but it still only works wihtin the X&Y axis. The 3D games (Sunshine, 64, Galaxy) all work within X,Y,&Z axis. Z=3rd Dimension, 3D.

The reason the others are called 2.5D is because even though they do have a 3rd axis they have a fixed camera and aren’t open like all the other 3D games.

      1. Nothing. Mario Maker is basically the dead end for the series now. 3D Mario is all that’s left and maybe now they’ll look into improving DKC series which Retro did alright design wise.

        1. HollowGrapeJ (The Legendary Video Game Master And Anime Wizard)

I wouldn’t be so sure about that. I’m pretty sure that they limited Super Mario Maker in some kind of way. And they’re going to use the tools that you DIDN’T get to use in order to create another Super Mario Bros game.

    3. Cool I love the Mario games all the games play different with cool new levels unlike cod same run and gun bullshit every year

    4. That’s good news. Honestly, the recent ‘New’ series all blends together in my mind. They’re fun, sure, but so generic I can’t really tell them apart anymore.

    5. cod looks more generic this year than ever before, and that software BOT aim

      casual as fuck station 4

getting fast tired of the defending if shit controls shit animation clunky experiences with ms andsony freaks

      mario controls like a dream

    6. Gay Commander got traumatised by the defeat i gave him and disappeared and came back as PC fanboy lol…..watch a faggaddy biyatch…the more he pretends and denies the fact that we know that PC Master Race Agent Narud is Gay Commander the more of an austic souless lonley loser he becomes. Lol what a sorry ass piss of shit

    7. About fucking time. I dont even care where they go with this they can literally do anything and it won’t be as bad as releasing the same rehashed game.

    8. As long as it doesn’t mean forced innovation like what happened with the Sonic franchise, then I’m fine with it. We all know what happened with “gems” like Sonic and the Black Knight and Shadow the Hedgehog.

    9. What new direction? You already had Mario Maker as Mario’s 30th, you killed people’s perception of the Mario universe, by revewling that SMB3 was JUST A STAGE PLAY (and people buy it). You kept Mario nearly mute for 30 years. You even erased Krystal and Panther Caroso from Star Fox. What’s next:

      -Mario Boom
      -Mario Runners
      -More Mario Maker
      -Mario Freemium
-A massive retcon that erases everything that ever happened.

Just one thing: Will we fans be able to have any say or any creative input in the franchise, before you make a decision that radically squashes everything the fans believe in or any promising fan ideas that haven’t been pitch to you yet (like Mario’s true backstory based on his game chronology, possible new game mechanics, Luigi saving/teaming up with Daisy, a Wario Bros. game).

I’m scared. And I just got through learning that Zygarde Core isn’t a Gen 7 new Pokemon.

    10. What I really want for the next 3D Mario game is a Mario game like 64 but instead of exploring only the castle, make it the entire kingdom with different worlds like they do with NSMB games. Like there could be a ice world or a lava world and so forth and make each world actually have depth. Like as much depth as Peach’s Castle from 64. And not just level to level to level to level like 3D World.

      1. I like that idea of a new Mario 64 but exploring he mushroom kingdom starting from the castle. It could be a continuation. Maybe walk down the road and (Mario Kart track) and drive to the next world 2-1 and I would also like a new Wario World. I think Wario is over due for a true game. I hate warioware and I hated shake it. I want Wario World 2

    11. Anyway, I’m pleased, scared, and not hyped with this news all at the same time. I mean this could mean a lot of things. He could actually try changing something and making it better, or make it worse, or he could just be lying his ass off by saying something and not doing it. Of course I hope for the best at the very end but I dunno.

    12. I haven’t lost faith in Miyamoto and the guys just yet. To the people who think it can’t be done, no one was expecting Mario Galaxy, which was a completely new take on things. If they can pull off an entirely brand new concept that’s good and make it a series like Galaxy, that’d be awesome. Just because you can’t think of it doesn’t mean it can’t be done. That’s why you’re not the creator, and they are.

    13. You know, I loved quadramus so much he’s the only reason I ever came to the comments sections. I quoted him to my friends. He’s awesome.
Wherever you are, I love you!

    14. I’d like to see a darker and more realistic Mario game. He’s just too damn happy! In real life, people who are overly happy annoy the crap out of me.

    15. Wow. This sounds really, really exciting! I can only imagine the possibilities. The funny thing is, I was thinking about super mario maker, and how it would have nicely marked the end of an era, as now anyone can make any stage in the series. The possibilities are endless, so why would they make/have to make another game like it? This is very interesting to say the least.

    16. I would not mind a realistic mario that plays slightly more like an open world game.
I’m sure they could pull of realism without abandoning the family friendliness of the series.

    17. I think it’s great that Miyamoto-san wants to take the franchise to a new place. I’m hoping for a massive open world, different types of bosses, more new characters, the ability to drive vehicles, new abilties, etc. I can’t wait see the NX version of the next Mario game. I hope Nintendo goes for broke and set a new standard

    18. Xenoblade Master Ridley X3

A 3D open world Mario game would be a nice direction to go in. Paper Mario and the Mario & Luigi franchises touch on an open world for Mario but is held back by still adhering to 2D rules and a linear story/path. A fusion of Super Mario 64’s gameplay with the story of Paper Mario along with stuff like the return of FLUDD, as an optional item/weapon to use instead of the game revolving around it, and the use of Yoshi & any vehicle from the Mario Kart franchise, as ways to get around the open world faster would be a nice, new direction for the Super Mario franchise. Super Mario 64 & the Paper Mario game have always made me hungry for a true open world, story driven Mario game. It’s time Miyamoto takes Mario into that direction.

At the same time, they don’t have to drop the idea of doing direct gameplay sequels of Sunshine & Galaxy, though. To appease the fans of those gameplay styles, they should still develop these sequels at some point if they aren’t developing them. Before someone comes up with the defense that Nintendo can’t do all three at once, it’s called having 3 different teams working on them. If they have to, get a 3rd party that knows how these gameplay styles work to help with developing the games.

    20. Now’s a good to shout out any random game idea anyone, because this is scary news. How about:

-A New Super Mario Bros. based on this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScYVwm1dC3o. Iggy is the main antagonist for a change. Each castle boss is a larger enhanced version of a regular ground enemy, with none of the obvious weaknesses. Luigi takes a seperate path and gets his own separate worlds to explore, as we as his own set of power-ups. Aside from riding Yoshi, you can also ride Birdo.
-A 3D Yoshi game, where you can play as either Yoshi (accompanied by Baby Mario and Baby Luigi) or Birdo (accompanied by Baby Peach and Baby Daisy). The babies can be useful for a change by acting as assist characters for their caretakers. Based on the Argonaut Croc series that was supposed to be a Yoshi game, but we never got it.
-A Luigi’s Mansion where you rescue Daisy, and unlock her at the end of the game as a playble character for the second quest.
-A co-op Wario Land game (either 2D or 3D), where you can also play as Waluigi.
-The next iteration of WarioWare, where Waluigi is added to the main cast.
-A spiritual successor to Donkey Kong 64, where you play as Donkey Kong, Diddy, Dixie, Cranky, and Kiddie, in a faraway new land.

I hope you’re listening Miyamoto. Don’t let this “new direction” squash any of these incredible ideas. And no more “it was all just a dream/stage play” endings. None.
