NPD: Super Mario Maker Drives 110 Percent Lift In Wii U Hardware Sales

The ability to create, play and share your own unique Super Mario levels was a dream 30 years in the making for Mario fans. Turns out it was also a great reason to jump into the Wii U experience. The Super Mario Maker game for the Wii U console launched in the U.S. on Sept. 11 and sold nearly 445,000 combined units in its first three weeks (Sept. 11, 2015 – Oct. 3, 2015), bringing the lifetime total to more than 500,000 combined units in the U.S. alone (Sept. 11 – Oct. 19, 2015). Perhaps the biggest impact however has been on hardware sales. For the full month of September, sales of Wii U hardware in the United States increased by nearly 110 percent over sales in August. Software sells hardware and no one sells hardware like Mario.

Other Nintendo highlights from September include:

  • Through the first nine months of 2015, sales of Nintendo 3DS hardware have increased by nearly 25 percent over the same time frame in 2014.
  • Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer for the Nintendo 3DS system launched on Sept. 25 and sold nearly 115,000 total units in its first week on the market.

That momentum should continue into the holiday selling season, as Nintendo gets ready to launch a series of great games for both of its platforms. The recently released Chibi Robo! Zip Lash (Nintendo 3DS, Oct. 9) and Yoshi’s Woolly World (Wii U, Oct. 16) will soon be joined by The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes (Nintendo 3DS, Oct. 23), YO-KAI WATCH (Nintendo 3DS, Nov. 6), Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival (Wii U, Nov. 13), Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash (Wii U, Nov. 20), Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon (Nintendo 3DS, Nov. 20), Xenoblade Chronicles X (Wii U, Dec. 4) and Devil’s Third (Wii U, Dec. 11).

      1. Yeah, I was gonna go there too. Maybe it has something to do with completely squashing the sales of these “lesser” games in Xenoblade and Devil’s Third. Even if both are great, they don’t have the name recognition in the market while Zelda and Starfox would sell as well as they could no matter when they were released.

While that may be the case for Star Fox, Zelda might also be coupled as an NX launch and therefore needing more development. That last bit is hard to say though, but the tea leaves are being read

Hey Sickr, someone over at Nintendo accidentally uploaded a bunch of french videos to the American Channel. They also disabled the comments. I wonder if it’s some sort of temper tantrum from a disgruntled employee.

IT WAS MEEEEE!!! NINTENDO WILL SUFFER MY WRATH!!! BWAMUHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! *hamming it up in dis bitch* Joking aside, wow. Someone at work must be pissed.

It’ll be interesting to see if Devil’s Third can hold it’s own against Xenoblade Chronicles X. Since it’s the US, I can see Devil’s Third actually holding it’s own even with the glitches & micro-transactions. Then again, Xenoblade Chronicles did pretty well compared to it’s Operation Rainfall counterparts during the Wii’s last, crumbling years.

  3. Just imagine if Nintendo had launched the Wii U with Mario maker, Fatal Frame, and MK8. Here’s hoping they can avoid repeating the same mistakes that hurt the Wii U for the NX launch.

Not just them but Smash 4, Hyrule Warriors, Splatoon, & Xenoblade Chronicles X too. Unless you meant those 3 games alone.

      1. Not really. If all those games were available at launch then Nintendo would’ve had time to work on other projects. It’s not like they would release their launch titles and then stop working on games for 3 years.

  4. I’m happy for Nintendo and all, but man……….Super Mario Maker was pretty much boring me. I’m already having more fun playing Yoshi’s Wooly World, because at least it’s a real game. Super Mario Maker is the kind of game that I would have been obsessed over as a kid. But now that I’m older, I don’t really get any sort of fun in creating a level.

Perhaps if there would have been some way to add your own items (like taking a picture of real-life items/objects and adding them to the game, I might have been more into the whole creation thing. See, I’m the kind of person who has always wanted to add my own things to games. Whether it be objects, or people’s real faces (not the silly Mii’s). I like personalization more than simply customization. If that makes any sense.

    1. Yoshi is very fun and I like it a lot, but I think you’re in the minority when you say that Mario maker is boring. Personally I think that MARIO MAKER IS AWESOME!!!

          1. But it’s not like I’m in the minority on purpose. My opinions just so happen to often be the opposite of most people’s. Probably one of many reasons why I’ve had so little friends in life. I get annoyed at people easily because everyone has to argue and disagree with me all the time.

  5. To the haters: I thought Super Mario Maker wasn’t gonna be a major system seller? I thought Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was gonna demolish it once it got released? I thought people were tired of the Mario IP? LOL!!! Fuck outta here

    1. I was waiting for you.
I want to see some real data. Hardware saw a spike after Mario Maker release? Well no shit. It was Mario and Kids these days love that kinda shit, a-la minecraft.

I’d like to see some solid sales data on whether the average number of units sold has a new, higher baseline, of if this is just another spike like splatoon gave them.

      Sit back down.

      1. Splatoon wasn’t just a spike, Splatoon gave them a new average, if you don’t believe me watch the sales in Japan.

Granted is hard to see if the USA or UK got the same treatment because THEY NEVER REVEAL THEIR NUMBERS!!

      2. Yeah I was waiting for your ass too. I think you were one of the negative ones that said Super Mario Maker wouldn’t improve the Wii U that much, well it looks a 110% hardware sales increase proves you wrong you bandwagon Nintendo fan. Up there talking about the Wii U may be your last Nintendo console because your friends have PS4s you crowd follower. And watch if all of the rumors are true about the NX’s power and if it somehow gets all of the 3rd party support, I bet your contradicting ass will be back on Nintendo’s nuts again and you’ll pretend like that comment never existed.

        Go stand in the corner.

    2. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

You like being willfully ignorant because it’s NintenD’OH!, don’t you? A percentage doesn’t mean shit without actual numbers to back it up as it could be a raise from 10 consoles sold last time which means only close to 200 sold this time which isn’t really a raise to celebrate because that’s pathetic numbers for the “Great” Nintendo to make. Before long, Super Mario Maker is going to have the same trouble as Mario Kart 8 & Super Smash Bros 4 Wii U: mediocre sales because the Wii U is suffering another major game drought as the momentum from the spike in console sales that Mario Maker brought is gone.
