Nintendo Wants To Put A Twist On The Open World Element Of Zelda Wii U

The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has told IGN in a recent interview that he wants to put a surprise twist on the open world element found in the upcoming Zelda title for the Wii U. He says that the team have taken onboard fan feedback from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and want to utilise some of the feedback they have received and use it in the upcoming Wii U adventure.

“We actually had some feedback from Skyward Sword, where people were saying, ‘This is not exactly the Zelda game I was looking for, I was looking for a bigger open world. Unfortunately, I can’t go into details but I’m hoping to put a surprise, or kind of a twist, on my view of an open world game. I hope that you’ll look forward to it.”

“If we put all the feedback the fans write directly into the game, there won’t be an element of surprise,” he said. “If there’s a comment and they’re asking for certain element, I would think, ‘Oh, why not interpret this in a different way that you wouldn’t expect?’ That’s how we create a new element in a Zelda game. I always want to implement something new and surprising into every game.“

  1. “I’m hoping to put in a surprise”

Hm, I hope it’s not a big surprise or twist because I was under the impression that this game was closer to being done. -_- oh well, now I feel like this game is another year away, great.

    1. I think the suprise take is that you can travel the world 360 as in there is no barrier but the you can reach a place by going around full circle. So the whole map is like a globe.

      1. Hmm, ala Tales of games. That would be pretty cool, but the only thing that allows tales of to work this way is the way you traverese the world, you don’t just walk. If we’re somehow able to fly then I see this working. I hope if isn’t a thing they’re just starting to work on though, I need my Zelda fix soon lol.

  2. As long as it’s still fun, (which I thought Skyward Sword was still fun) I’ll be happy. I just hope that Aonuma doesn’t get so caught up with trying to put a twist on things that he might change something that was actually better before-hand.

    1. My thoughts exactly. I bet the twist is that you can only explore a limited amount of that vast open world a day, or some other dumb restriction. Nintendo lately seems to love limiting things that had so much potential. Or you’ll need an amiibo to access all of the world. Or an annoying helper character will guide you through the open world instead of letting you explore freely on your own. I’m a huge fan, but Nintendo lately has been more facepalm than fun lately.

  3. I’ve lost all hope for this game. I’m over it. Waiting this long. I’ll just be underwhelmed like I was with yoshi wooly world.

  4. Omg, saying that it seems the game will not be finished next year, it seems it will take more time I fear, well, let the time decides. Well, I hope it becomes an awesome game after all .

  5. I wish he would talk about something else about the game then it’s openness or about it being open world. Almost every time he speaks about Zelda U it has to do with something about open world.

    1. Maybe next time he’ll talk about how you can ride either a horse or a robot or an eagle!!!! Or jump off your horse onto an eagle and soar up the mountain or across a river! Cuz it’s super open world.

  6. “…I’m hoping to put a surprise, or kind of a twist, on my view of an open world game.”

I don’t like the sound of that. Just make it open world, it’s all we want, don’t mess it up.

  7. “I’m hoping to put a surprise, or kind of a twist, on my view of an open world game.”

Your main item is going to be a shovel, and you’re going to have to literally open the world and use a series of tunnels to travel anywhere.

  8. This is why I love and hate Nintendo. He is saying they deliberately don’t listen to their fans. I enjoy the surprises they have and think they would have no innovation if they didn’t think this way but at the same time they sometimes over think things too much and implement stuff nobody wants sometimes. Hopefully they implement a good twist and not something disappointing

    1. He didn’t say he doesn’t listen to fans, if anything he said he does. All he’s saying is that if he puts something in the game exactly like people say then it won’t be a suprise. But if he takes your suggestion, and adds upon it his own ideas, then he can make them better, more exciting, and more of a suprise.

    1. In my opinion. Skyward Sword and majoras mask. I didn’t care for it. At all. Couldn’t get through it. Lost interest. I didn’t feel that way with Twilight Princess, ocarina of time or other Zelda games.

I thoroughly loved Skyward Sword, but MM… Maybe it’s because I devote almost no time to playing new video games these days, but I just couldn’t play it. Bought MM3D, put like four hours in it, and it just never gripped me and I didn’t like the overworld.

Maybe I’ve just become too casual o_o

It was okay, at best. The shitty gameplay is what made it one of the worst Zelda games. Fucking stylus & touch screen for most actions was bullshit. Exactly why I played both those games once & have never looked back. A shame, really, because I loved the adult timeline. And a carbon copy of Hyrule was pathetic, really. It’s a timeline where Ganondorf might actually stay dead for once, so why not set this timeline apart from the others where there is a new kingdom & a new big bad? I guess Nintendo really can’t come up with new ideas for villains for their main franchises. Or just lazy.

        1. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

Storywise, yes. Gameplay wise, fuck no. If I never play another Zelda game forcing me to use a fucking stylus & touch screen for most gameplay again, it will be too soon.

      1. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

I’d definitely put Twilight Princess above Phantom Hourglass & Spirit Tracks because least that game’s gameplay was fun. It’s gameplay gimmick was held back by the stone age motion control but it wasn’t nearly as annoying as those two Wind Waker sequels. And don’t get me started on the fact the second sequel just went & made a carbon copy of Hyrule! Bleh! The perfect timeline to try something new with Zelda & they fucking blew it!

          1. You guys have no stinking taste! Spirit tracks has very fun gameplay!! Plus, stop stating your opinions like they’re fact! A lot of people liked all the games you mentioned. It’s not like any of them were anywhere near a failure!! Sure your entitled to an opinion, but so is everyone else in the world so stop stating yours as fact!!

            1. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

You say we’re “stating our opinions as facts” yet you are the one telling us we have “no stinking taste.” So if anyone is stating their opinions as facts, you’re the more likely candidate. Now go sit & the corner, kid, & think about the bullshit you just spouted.

              1. If you don’t think that repeatedly say that a game IS dumb, or IS boring, or IS terrible instead of that you think that way, is stating your opinions as fact, then I can’t really help you there. I’m done arguing with you. There’s many things I want to say to you right now, but I’m gonna refrain. Sorry if my comment made me seem rude. I was mearly joking about your bad tastes. We can agree to disagree. I don’t want you to think I’m being a jerk, if it came off that way I’m sorry. Talk to you later, have a nice day:)

                1. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

You’re fine now. But like Marce2240 said, word it better next time because “you have no taste” is usually something someone that thinks of their own opinion as fact would say to someone about their opinion and I hate that phrase with a passion.

            2. “You guys have no stinking taste!”
Nice way to word your post. Surely this won’t create animosity in the reply.

“Spirit tracks has very fun gameplay!!”
And the worst overworld in any Zelda game. And don’t get me started about the fucking flute.

“Plus, stop stating your opinions like they’re fact!”
              You first, champ.

“A lot of people liked all the games you mentioned.”
Completely irrelevant to whether the game is good or bad.

“It’s not like any of them were anywhere near a failure!!”
I guess Gone Home, GTA V, Skyrim and the like are masterpieces of gaming now.

“Sure your entitled to an opinion”
Doesn’t seem to be that way when you try to censor it just because you can’t accept criticism.

          1. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

I hate that subplot with the Peatrice girl because now the Zelda/Link pairing haters can fight us til the bitter end that SS Link & Zelda don’t get together. Grr… And since Nintendo seems to have something against having love involved in their games, I doubt Nintendo will ever come clean & tell us who SS Link got with. :/

            1. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

But chances are he got with Zelda because that Peatrice girl is… well… way too desperate to be good girlfriend material.

        1. I hated the wolf sections is TP, so that’s not really a plus for me. The bug hunts in particular were horribly tedious. I’m positive the wolf sections in TP are the reason why many people claim Okami is the best Zelda game in recent times (and I’m inclined to agree). The way both games handle similar situations and gameplay couldn’t be more different.

  9. Unlike some people, I’m not blowing this announcement ou of proportion and just waiting. Even some of the weaker Zelda titles (SS, PH, ST) were still fun to play and explore. With the amount of work in this one, I’m sure it will be a good twist.

        1. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

Not just the motion controls but the huge fields barely having any life is another point taken from Twilight Princess. If you are going to add massive fields, at least make them lively. Oh & the game’s subquests either should have been longer with more things to hunt down or should have had more subquests to make up for the shortness of the ones already in the game. Don’t hype up massive fields, which was one of the things they used to advertise Twilight Princess & build up hype for it, if they are going to be barren wastelands. There’s some other things about Twilight Princess that saddens me but the ones I mentioned are my biggest complaints.

  10. The exploration in Skyward Sword was almost non-existent.
It was more of a “journey from Point A to Point B” type of game.
The amount of backtracking and fetch quests were absurd, the constant hand-holding from Fi was unsatisfactory and the motion controls were mediocre.
I can’t tell you how many times I had to continuously synchronize and calibrate my Motion Plus controller over and over again.
The game was fun and the art style was beautifully done, but there are hundreds of things they could have done to make it a better Zelda title.

    1. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

I agree with everything except the motion controls. I’d say they were more good than mediocre because I didn’t have to recalibrate the motion control too much as I only ever had issues when I’d stop playing the game for a couple of minutes to take a food/drink/bathroom break. I really wonder if the people complaining about recalibration just had too much stuff going on in their room whether it was people getting in the way, people moving the motion plus too far out of range, or too many other devices sending out signals. Maybe even some of you guys just had a defective motion plus controller/attachment.

      1. My room is actually pretty big and spacious enough when it came to playing motion controlled games on my Wii, lol.
The biggest issue was when it would go out of sync while I’m trying to fight enemies.
The Quadro Babas for instance. There were many occasions where I would accidentally perform a diagonal slash instead of a vertical or horizontal slash (which are the only slash attacks that can kill them).
Then there were also times where I wanted to perform a Shield Bash or Thrust Attack and get no responses until after like 5 attempts.
The motion controls were a neat effort, but there was definitely room for improvement in that department.

      2. Haha, I forgot to add that I purchased the Limited Edition Skyward Sword bundle that came with the golden Wii Motion Plus controller.

    2. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

It sucks that a lot of you were having this trouble with the motion plus, though, as I’m sure it ruined some of the game for ya.

  11. it seems the selling point of the game is open world….well 2 years delay to have an open world game…. I hope that will translate to more divers regions and more exploration which were lacking in Skyward sword. What about the story did he managed to produce a very good story for this wii U version?

Do we know if there is going to be a link (pardon the pun) between Skyward sword and “general” Zelda theme like the discovery of the triforce (for the first time) or having a 3 way fight between link, Ganon and Zelda to obtain the triforce which will result of the triforce being scattered into three and merge with them in molecular level (which will pass down to generation) .

A good twist will be the ability to control Zelda and Ganon during the game (how Ganon managed to conquer Hyrule and the dungeons link has to go through? Some how he must have done something) and have another perspective

    1. Speculation leads to this title taking place quite some time after Skyward Sword. However, even if that’s the case, I don’t think it’ll be the kind of sequel that directly adresses the plot of the previous game, like Twilight Princess was to Ocarina or Phantom Hourglass to Wind Waker.

  12. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

If this twist involves dungeons being blocked off til you get a certain item, ala Link Between Worlds, I’m all for it. But if it’s some stupid forced gimmick, ugh! Please no! Skyward Sword was already ruined for some because the motion plus gave them calibration trouble.

On the subject of Link Between Worlds’ idea with being able to travel to most places til you hit a point where you need a certain item, make sure it sticks to tradition as you need to either go halfway through a dungeon to get said item or having to do an important subquest to get said item. Oh & only have it to where the dungeons themselves are inaccessible without a particular item, not an entire section of the open world because that actually ruins the open world mechanic.

  13. “I wanted a bigger open world”
Said no one ever about Skyward Sword. Now, “I wanted things to do in this world”, maybe that’s what he meant.

  14. I have faith in Aonuma. This man knows what he’s doing.
I never understood the complaints about Skyward Sword. I thoroughly LOVED that game. Only things I got tired of was having to go to the same places over and over again, and having to constantly fight that giant nightmareish creature with the big toenails. That got old.
