GoldenEye 64: Miyamoto Suggested At End Of Game You Shake Enemies Hands In The Hospital

GoldenEye game director Martin Hollis has revealed in a talk at GameCity festival in Nottingham that Shigeru Miyamoto wasn’t entirely happy with all the killing in GoldenEye on the Nintendo 64. Hollis said that Miyamoto even made a suggestion to the team that at the end of the game you meet up with all the enemies you’ve shot numerous times and shake hands with them in the hospital. Obviously these changes were never implemented.

“One point was that there was too much close-up killing – he found it a bit too horrible. I don’t think I did anything with that input. The second point was, he felt the game was too tragic, with all the killing. He suggested that it might be nice if, at the end of the game, you got to shake hands with all your enemies in the hospital.”

So glad he ignored Miyamoto. Miyamoto is a genius but even geniuses come up with some really stupid fucking ideas on occasion.

    1. Nintendo Sub-Commander Cereza

If I teach him to show no mercy. His transition to the dark side will be complete. He shall be Dark Miyamoto, and he will paint his nails black.
      …..
      Forget that second part.

    ||Nintendo’s flawed logic in a few sentences, you console peasants were always destined to despair forever……

      1. Because of many things: He’s always against online multiplayer; he asked to Nintendo remove the second circle pad from the original 3DS; he delivered a shallow Pikmin game for the Wii U; he is lost on Mario franchise future — heck, where is the proper 3D Mario game for the Wii U? –; he never acknowledge that fans are dying for a new F-Zero iteration; he was happy with the bland and empty Star Fox Zero.

        1. we did get a proper mario game on Wii U so i don’t understand what u mean there , pikmin 3 is amazing i don’t see nothing shallow about it XD , Starfox Zero isn’t even finished yet so we can’t say anything just yet, the rest i agree they were really stupid decisions but hey he no longer has anything to do on making a console honestly he isn’t very good at that XD he should just stick to games

          1. Mario 3D World is not on par with 64, Sunshine, or Galaxy 1 & 2. Camera was more limited and honestly the game was pretty easy until the secret levels. Still fun game, but not what people were hoping for as the main Mario entry for the Wii U. Pikmin 3 was fun but very short. i beat it in less than a week. I believe that is what he was referring to.

          1. LOL, stop being such an attention whore, Headache! I never reply to any of your comments, and you keep replying me. Please, get lost and never, ever talk to me again!

  3. He probably didn’t knew that much about James Bond… but who knows.
Game would have sucked if they had listened to him. I mean come on, the guy usually has great ideas on his games, and Goldeneye is great as it is.
Just thinking on that scenario of shaking hands… just no…
I like Miyamoto, but sometimes…i don’t know what to think…

    1. James Bond is kind of a dick, to his enemies. That’s the point. But it’s a game and I suppose he knew younger people would play it. That or maybe he personally just doesn’t enjoy violent things.

Ironically, Ian Fleming based James Bond more on American spies than British spies. Unlike American spies, British spies rarely used gadgets. So in a way, American Zatoichi sounds about right.

  4. If it happened to be true, well obviously Miyamoto-san did not understand the concept/theme of the movie and hate violence. The guys on the other hand was an idiot, because it does seems that he has not explained to Miyamoto-san what James bond is, what the audience of this game aimed for as well as the market for western audience (especially UK).

PS: yep some people do know not James bond (like star wars) and giving the Japanese dedication toward work life,it make possible not knowing what James bond is)

  5. This isn’t funny or cute. It is stupid and shows how out of touch Miyamoto is at times. “Oh no, we can’t have violence in our game based off of a movie that has violence.” Don’t give him a pass on this just because you worship the good things he has done people. No one is perfect, and Miyamoto is most definitely included. It’s so sad to see people defend just about anything this man or Nintendo do. They aren’t perfect. Accept it.

      1. I’m fine actually. I was just pointing out that this kind of thinking by Miyamoto is not good. And that people are actually making it out to be cute. Guarantee you that if this were Microsoft or Sony some of the people on here would by laughing and talking crap saying how lame they are. But because it’s Miyamoto he gets a pass and this is just a cute idea and let’s hug him. Do I think all games need to be mature? Absolutely not. I love the Mario games. Well, most of them anyway. Sonic games used to be great (for fucks sake Sega, get it together). Banjo, DK, stuff like that. But I also enjoy games where I can kill and blow shit up. The reason? I know it’s a video game and not real. I can easily separate the two as I’m not a psycho or moron. Therefore sometimes I like to go around killing my enemies. Not giving them a high five and handshake. And let’s be honest, after some of the final bosses in games that are throw your controller across the room hard, do you really want to see you character go give that bastard a handshake? Hell no. You want that punk to suffer haha!

        1. You realize this is really old right? Like, he made that suggestion back during the N64 days when there weren’t as many M rated titles as there are now. This is sort of the thinking back then. Even M rated games had their own ways of putting in cute extras.

    1. In the end they didn’t actually have to listen to him. They weren’t first party and could do whatever the heck they wanted. Umm, remember Conker’s bad fur day? They wouldn’t even release that game in Japan. They got guidance and tips from Nintendo, that’s all. The video game landscape was VERY different back then. FPS and other realistic games had just started to appear. It was new, they didn’t know if people wanted such games on consoles. Nintendo consoles especially. Yeah still back then games were seen as “toys”. That’s just the way it was. Shit happened and now we actually get some mature games on Nintendo consoles, even if some get censored in the west and vise versa.

      1. I know they didn’t have to listen to him. My point is to the fact that he is a major reason why Nintendo is more kiddy. Some of the kiddy games are great. But there should be more grown up games as well. Not quite sure what you mean by realistic games, but if you mean violent, then you would be wrong. Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter amongst others were already around and people loved them. Both appeared on Nintendo consoles as well. As far as getting some mature games on Nintendo consoles, I don’t see GTA or most of the Arkham games on Nintendo, or plenty of others. I do realize a lot of that has to do with third party not supporting Nintendo, but it remains a fact that Nintendo does not get that many mature games in comparison to Sony and Microsoft. And the ones that we do get should not be censored. If they are for adults, then why are they censored? That doesn’t even make sense. That’s what the M for Mature means: For Adults.

        1. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

That’s another reason why them censoring this game is horrible: we barely get any M rated games on Nintendo consoles as it is so censoring the ones we do get doesn’t help the abysmal support from M rated games.

  7. I’m glad Miyamoto is the way that he is. We have too many bloody, violent games on the market. I love games like Assassin’s Creed and The Last Of Us. But if they were ALL just like those, it would get extremely old. In fact, it already IS starting to. With Miyamoto’s games, we get a more colorful, family-friendly variety to choose from. I enjoy a mixture of each. Sometimes when I’m playing games like GTA, The Last Of Us or Sleeping Dogs etc., I’m thinking to myself, “Thank god for Nintendo’s games”. Because sometimes all of the blood, gore, violence, sex, and profanity gets SO freakin’ tiresome.
