Pokémon Developer Game Freak Acquires Mobile Developer, Koa Games

Game Freak has been trying to define itself outside the traditional realm of handheld Pokémon games. Earlier this year, the developer self-published HarmoKnight on the 3DS eShop and developed/produced Tembo the Badass Elephant for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. However, a recent tweet from Takashi Mochizuki of the Wall Street Journal states that Game Freak has acquired Koa Games, a smartphone developer:

While Koa Games has seemed to target the Japanese mobile market in the past, this may be an indication of Nintendo mobile games to come. What kind of game do you hope they will develop?

  1. >>>They are getting powerful on their own, this is a bit worrying and the empire must ensure their subordination>>>

  2. I’m calling it. Pokemon is going Mobile. The only way it will continue to release on Nintendo hardware is if the next handheld is stronger and has features such as bluetooth and hopefully LTE.

We may see one more Pokemon title on the 3DS, maybe, but I’m betting Nintendo is taking the franchise mobile – given Nintendo knows Pokemon sells hardware, it would make sense that they are coming out with a stronger handheld in the next 2 years.
