Rumour: Retro Studios Next Game Could Be A New IP

Liam Robertson from Unseen64 has revealed on a recent podcast that he is under the impression that Retro Studios could be hard at work on an original IP that they proposed to Nintendo. We know that they finished work on Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze back in late 2013 and have since been pitching projects to Nintendo. The new game was apparently green-lit by NCL in 2014.

“I don’t actually know what the project is, exactly, but I know that it is something that Retro themselves pitched. … They came off of Tropical Freeze in very late 2013, I think it was, and they continued throughout 2014 pitching new projects. … And then they eventually pitched a project that went through, and NCL greenlit, and I assume that’s what they’re doing now—by all accounts, it is.”

“I don’t think Retro wants to do [Metroid Prime 4]. … I’d be surprised if Retro themselves pitched [that]. I think they’ve had their fill of Metroid. … And if it is Metroid, then it will be something different—like maybe a 2D one, or something—different from Prime.”

“I think they have the potential to work on multiple projects, but I feel like the money isn’t there. People don’t realize it, but Retro is one of the priciest studios for [Nintendo] to maintain, and I can’t see them letting them do two projects at once. As far as I know, they have one NCL producer with them right now, and I couldn’t see this person overseeing both of them; I think this person would be doing one.

… And you were saying, ‘could it be an original property?’ I think, actually, the time is now for Retro to do an original property. They’ve done two established Nintendo franchises, they’ve done Metroid and Donkey Kong, and I think now is the time to let them take hold of the reins a bit more for themselves and do that. And I think if it is something that they pitched themselves, then that does make it more likely that they pitched something original.”

  1. Just his opinion without any substantial evidence to stand upon, before anyone says anything stupid. He even says that he has no idea about what it could be and he’s just speculating.

    1. Well right now details about the NX aren’t officially confirmed so let’s wait until Nintendo confirms it’s specs and you’re probably taking his words the wrong way. He could’ve meant that Nintendo is taking the NX to a whole new level on the power side. With the rumors saying that it’s on par with an high end PC, he could’ve been insinuating that it’s trying to compete with high end gaming PCs but it’s still uncertain how powerful it is and what it is exactly (although I am leaning towards it being a handheld/home console) and like I said, we’ll have to wait for Nintendo to share it’s details come next year

  2. I don’t care what the project is (as long as it isn’t another Donkey Kong platformer and I love the Donkey Kong franchise) so long as it’s gameplay is great and appealing I’m good

  3. Who is this Unseen64 ape? Some random guy who says shit, in a way that’s what people could say about me I suppose, but Retro was specifically made to work on NINTENDO’S GAMES that Nintendo themselves couldn’t work on, THEY DO NOT MAKE NEW IP’S. They don’t pictch what they want to do to Nintendo, Retro themselves stated before Tropical Freeze NINTENDO OFFERED THEM METROID OR ANOTHER DK GAME. They had idea’s left over from DKC Returns, so they chose DKC TF. Proof that Nintendo offers them projects, not the other way around. Miyamoto stated he believes Retro to be very capable of doing Metroid still. Unless Nintendo gave Metroid to someone else after they chose DKC TF, it was still left waiting for Retro AFTER they finished DKC TF.

    1. Actually, all studios pitch ideas for games. This is how they get work. Retro is Nintendo. Retro = EAD(EDP, now I think).

  4. I’d be happy to check it out.

I get that Metroid fans are really anxious for a new game, but I wish they’d stop begging for just Retro to do it. There are plenty of other companies that can do Metroid.

Granted, I’m not exactly a fan of either Metroid Prime or DKC but I would be intrigued to see what brand new concept they can bring.

    1. I don’t trust any studio to make a good Prime game except for Retro, and I think many people feel that way too. There’s a reason why that kind of game hasn’t benn successfuly replicated.

  5. i see retro studios still have partnership with nintendo but i wonder if there IPs can handle this source of work they are gonna make but i know they are planning for a project but i wonder whats the hint for all this.

  6. And people keep saying ‘why Nintendo let go of Rare’. When money becomes a huge factor in things, a departure is expected. Hopefully Retro gets their heads out their asses before M$ or even Sony turns them to Shovelware.
