As part of an IGN First feature on Yooka-Laylee’s development, a brand new character has been revealed – his name is Rextro Sixtyfourus.
Rextro is a blocky orange dinosaur and was designed by Mark Stevenson, who previously worked on the Donkey Kong Country series along with Donkey Kong 64 and Kameo.
“We decided on using a dinosaur pretty early on as this is a creature that naturally associates with a past era,” Stevenson explains. “Then I think mostly my inspiration came from work I’d done previously on characters for the Donkey Kong 64 game. From this work I knew the kind of forms we had to create due to low polygon counts, so this inspired the shapes used to create Rextro’s blocky feet and hands that are virtually cubes. All the polygons in Rexto have hard edges as well: this affects how the light shines on him meaning you can basically see all the polygon faces as individual facets.”
You can check out pictures of Rextro Sixtyfourus below from IGN’s website, and there’s also further footage on the IGN feature. What do you think of the newly revealed character?
Looks dull as shit
I don’t know. My poop isn’t usually orange and dinosaur shaped.
It’s not? ………….
…..
YOU FREAK!!
I’ve always had a feeling that CD-I Link knew something we didn’t…
Well at least now, to him, it sure isn’t boooring around heeere…
It’s only boring to him if he doesn’t get to bomb his dodongo’s.
I don’t know if I like the design that much, but one thing is certain: the N64 look is strong with it.
Its a great throwback to the N64 era of gaming
is it fuk its a cheap marketing ploy
Maybe it is a heavily N64 inspired character. Like they said, they drew inspiration from DK64, an N64 game. Who knows. If the character is likable/helpful, then I’ll accept it.
More like Banjo-Kazooie, but you’re still technically right since both were collectathons.
Collecta..what?
Collectathon. It’s a term that was coined when games like Super Mario 64 were on the rise with games like Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, etc taking collecting things in-game to a whole new level as the main thing you did in those games was collect stuff.
Exactly. Mario 64 paved the way, and then games like Banjo-Kazooie and DK64 took it further, especially DK64 since every character could collect golden bananas, normal bananas, crystal coconuts, blueprints, coins… There were a lot.
I really love the name xD xD
I like it a lot. Seems like a neat idea.
Love the throwback to a golden age of 3D platformers.
What a cool idea i like the design and the name somthing fun for older gamer’s
I personally am excited for this game
this game will be dogshit there pushing the WHOLE N64 THING NINTENDO CONECTION to market this unity DOG SHITE
Obvious troll is obvious
The more I hear about this game, the more I want it. This is the first Indie game I’ve ever been really excited for haha (besides MN9, which I’m not even excited for anymore). Kinda weird to call it indie though, when all the team members are industry veterans. Technicalities..
I hope this comes to Apple App Store along with Freedom Planet, Shantae 3, Mighty No. 9 and Shovel Knight.
Ah, yes. I’d like to try Freedom Planet. I just keep forgetting. Same for Shantae. I think I played the original on Gameboy (Color?) though. So long ago..
Yeah. I didn’t like the first game much. Maybe it’s because it’s old. But Pirate’s Curse really increased the anti. But the final level to reach the top is a mega bitch. XD
Great name. It’s a nice homage to old N64 games. It’s funny that by today’s standards, N64 is now the new retro. Damn I’m getting old!
I saw that and I immidiatly thought Banjo-Tooie.
Has anyone played that game?? Aw… it’s so fun because a bunch of our friends get together and blow each other up in the battle mode. So much fun.
I think the character is cool. I like the theme of him.
