Final Fantasy VII’s Cloud Announced For Super Smash Bros.

In the biggest surprise of the night, during today’s Nintendo Direct it was announced that the iconic Cloud from Final Fantasy VII would be the newest challenger in Super Smash Bros. This will come along with completely new stages.

This is a developing story — it will be updated as more news becomes available.

  1. Never even thought to vote for him, but I’ll definitely take him. Cloud is a bad ass! Still wanted K. Rool, but this is way better than Shantae or Shovel Knight or Geno or characters like that.

      1. After reading other comments about it, I came to the same conclusion. I just assumed as I was watching that he was the ballot character. I shouldn’t have jumped the gun. Still happy about him though.

  2. 💃I'm a Boss Ass Bitch💯

This pisses me the fuck off. Oh you you can put cloud in fucking smash but you can’t put the new final fantasy on the wii u. What kind of shit is that? Nice character but fucking still.

      1. I’m pretty sure NX will come out earliest Holiday 2016 but more than likely sometime in 2017.

I figure it will be another 4-5 years before we see FF VII Remake so… lol Yeah, it could likely go on there.

      1. 💃I'm a Boss Ass Bitch💯

Everyone wants to fucking inject their bullshit into smash. Than bitches have some nerve to say “oh the wii u is underpowered, let’s not acknowledge it.” They are all Nothing but a bunch of two faced hypocritical fake ass Bitches if you ask me.

            1. Pac-Man is actually acceptable to me considering Namco helped with the development of Sm4sh.
Capcom on the other hand should not have gotten a free pass with 2 reps.

        1. Square Enix most likely didn’t approach Nintendo; it was most likely the other way around.
As for a Wii U Final Fantasy, scaling FFXV down to the Wii U is probably impossible, same probably goes for FFVII (for what little we know about it). And making a dedicated FF game just for the Wii U just wouldn’t be lucrative for them. I guess porting FFXIII to Wii U would be an option, but who would want that, anyways?

          1. The Wii U could theoretically work on both Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy VII, albeit with PS3/XB360-level detail. The only reason why it doesn’t is because the proprietary game engine used doesn’t have official support for them (and I don’t think Square Enix wants to port said game engine to that console).

  3. Real question is……is he a ballot winner? Seems to well implemented into the game for him to have been decided on only a month and a half ago. Maybe the Smash Broadcast/direct/thingy will clear some of this up…..I’d rather not have Squeenix fanboys screaming and hollering that Cloud got in over Wolf, Snake, Shovel Knight and K.Rool lol

          1. Ike-like attacks, Greninja/Ike style final smash; multiple hits in a circle with a finishing blow. He’s a shoehorned swordfighter, that’s about all there is to it.

            1. Ike/Greninja doesn’t have a “Limit”-like system Cloud has (which allows him to charge up his attacks). Ike/Greninja also don’t have a special attack involving forming a kanji while slashing.

The only thing Cloud shares with Ike is a similar-sized sword and a Final Smash that seems very similar in execution.

                1. Why are you even arguing with me? Just because his moveset resembles others doesn’t automatically mean he plays the same, nor that they would work similarly. Resorting to logical fallacies like what you’re doing won’t let you win arguments.

Besides, if I have a hunch, I’d say Cloud’s “Limit System” would most likely work similarly to Little Mac’s “Power Meter”, only, instead of affecting one move, it affects his entire moveset. This sounds more logical due to it working in a similar way within his source game (ie, “being hit increases the Limit gauge”).

    1. I think he was a Sakurai add-in just like Ryu not a ballot winner character hence why a special Smash announcement is happening next month

    1. Same. I never would’ve expected Cloud. That totally came out of nowhere and I couldn’t be even more happier. MIND……BLOWN

  4. LMAO. What the hell, never would have expected that… Like… wow?
Can’t complain at all though, I love two-hand sword fighters. And as a huge FFVII fan, Cloud is very welcome for me personally. Might actually be the first (and most likely only) DLC character I’ll buy. He seemed quite similar to Ike, but that’s absolutely alright because I love Ike. So, all good by me. :)
Also, this was probably my personal highlight of the entire Direct, as everything else was rather underwhelming in terms of new announcements for the WiiU, lmao.

      1. HollowGrapeJ (A.K.A. Shampoo- Destroyer Of Girl Type Ranma & Akane Tendo And Soon To Be Married Wife Of Boy Type Ranma Saotome Of The Anything Goes Martial Arts School)

Maybe he can wait though since the remake is confirmed now? That’s what I was thinking. Haven’t played the original either.

          1. Next his name will extend to “AKA Professional scientist specializing in Antidisestablishmentarianism and pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.(Yes, those are real words)”
            XD

      1. all stars is shit anyway. if fans of nintendo who do not own a Wii U gets interest in cloud and want to play a game where he is the star, why the hell they have to do?. Buy a PS4!
I don’t think fans of play station will buy a Wii U only for one game, never.
maybe ff vii is being developed for NX, or maybe it is sakurai is making sure more games are being developed for his ps4 thanks to the smash bros hype, just saying.

  5. And good job Sakurai, another bone headed decision. ANOTHER guy with a sword….JUST WHAT WE NEEDED. We got like 12,000 characters with swords and all their attacks and animations are nearly identical….he maybe better then Ryu, but not by much.

    1. There’s only 10 or so sword-fighters, 5 or so gunner types, and about 30 Brawlers.

Whatever you’re smoking to come up with the delusion that there’s way too many sword fighters, you need to start sharing, cause that’s some potent **** right there.

      1. I’m straight edge I don’t smoke. Every Fire Emblem character is a sword user, A WHOLE FRANCHISE WORTH OF REPS…Life is about variety, not variations. Also Cloud has NEVER been on a Nintendo system, Sakurai’s OWN RULE WAS A CHARACTER HAS TO HAVE BEEN ON A NINTENDO SYSTEM TO MAKE IT TO SMASH. Sakurai must be the one who has been taking drugs (for his arms/wrist injuries) and it’s messed with his brain.

        1. Hate to break it to you, but Cloud HAS been on Nintendo systems.
He appears in no less than two Kingdom Hearts games, Theaterythm Final Fantasy, and one or two others I can’t remember off the top of my head.

Also, again, we’ve got about 10 swordsmen, 5 gunners, and the rest, about 30, are brawler types.

We aren’t overflowing with swordsmen; they just stand out more.
Plus, think about what this could mean as far as future game collaborations.
Imagine NX releasing with the remake of FF VII.

  6. 3-6 characters, huh?
Also, lol at Cloud. Worst choice ever, in my opinion. Has he even appeared in a Nintendo console before? I’d gladly trade him for any FF protagonist from 1-6.

    1. How do you know if he’s a Smash Ballot DLC character? He’s most likely a Sakurai add-in and you do know there will be a special Smash Bros announcement next month don’t you?

        1. Well that’s what I thought you were referencing when you brought up the 3 to 6 characters part of your comment because 3 or 6 characters could very well be announced next month

          1. I was referencing the unrealistic expectations of hoping for 6 characters to be revealed in one single 45 minute direct.

I’m not saying they aren’t developing 6 characters. It seem like a bit too much for me, but I admit that it’s not out of the realm of the possibility. However, if they had such a large number of characters to reveal they’d obviously reveal them at least in two groups, not every single one at a time.

      1. True, Theatrhythm. Maybe in some Kingdom Hearts game as well?

But really, I’d take any Nintendo character over Cloud. If I wanted a PlayStation icon in the game, I would have voted for Snake.

        1. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

I’d rather have Cloud over Snake because I prefer swordfighters over gunners, anyway. And if this by some chance leads to the Final Fantasy VII remake hitting the NX, that’s another plus in getting Cloud in Smash 4. If not, oh well. Least I finally get to pit Link & Shulk against Cloud! @.@ Three of my most favorite swordfighters in video games in one game, hell fucking yes! Now if we can get the Ice Climbers, Nana & Popo, back in Smash, I’ll forgive the lack of Ridley in Smash 4.

          1. While I don’t disagree with you, I won’t mind seeing another gunner fighter. The only ones we have really are Samus, Mega Man, Duck Hunt, and Mii Gunner, and Dark Pit if you count his FS being Dark Pit Staff (which were like the guns of KI Uprising). I don’t count Fox or Falco or ZSS because they really only use their guns for one move and they’re mostly close combat oriented.

Swordfighters we have Link, Marth, Lucina, Ike, Roy, Robin, Shulk, Toon Link, Meta Knight, Mii Swordsman, and now Cloud.

This is partly why I voted for Quote- another gunner fighter would be nice.

            1. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

If you look at the roster, there’s around ten swordfighters & only 5 gunners. Robin counts as a swordfighter AND a gunner because while robin uses a sword for most of his/her basic attacks, his/her b attacks rely on her long distance magic attacks. Ganondorf really should have been a gunner type. Instead, he got turned into Captain Falcon 2.0 using 99% brawler moves. So with that in mind, you got well over 30 brawlers. So if these people whining about swordfighters want to complain about too many of anything, it’s brawlers.

          2. Snake had a completely unique playstyle that spiced things up, though. I wouldn’t consider him a gunner, either (there are no real gunner characters besides Mii and Samus anyway)

About the remake of FFVII, I’m waiting to see what they do to it. To release a turn-based JRPG in this day an age with an AAA budget doesn’t sound like good business unless you make it extremely cinematic.

  7. HollowGrapeJ (A.K.A. Shampoo- Destroyer Of Girl Type Ranma & Akane Tendo And Soon To Be Married Wife Of Boy Type Ranma Saotome Of The Anything Goes Martial Arts School)

I bet 90% of you here didn’t see this coming.

    1. he’s going to give us a guy with a big…. sword.
      looks his type of… you know… guy…
      …with a big sword.
      buy a ps4!

  8. Wow think you Sakurai another swordguy just like everybody wanted and this time it’s a emo looking swordguy how great -_-

  9. well cloud is fine in smash bros but he looks pretty awsome but i was thinking if they can show another trailer of smash bros characters DLCs.

    1. Weird choice but cool nonetheless.

I think it’s a jerk move on Square Enix’s part, not giving Cloud (who was requested several times) to Sony for PS All-Stars considering FF VII games are mostly PS exclusive. Cloud has only shown up in Theatrhythm on Nintendo.

Big win for Nintendo because it’s freaking Cloud! In Smash! So.. yeah. lol He’ll probably be the only DLC character I get.

  10. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

I don’t understand why there are people whining about getting another swordfighter. What next? Gonna start complaining about too many brawlers? Instead of Ryu, a brawler, we should have gotten Master Chief instead since we NEED MORE GUNNERS!!!

*shrug* Whatever. They won’t ruin my happiness at being able to use Cloud in 8 player Smash along with Shulk, Link, Marth, Robin, Lucina, Ike, & Roy! Sword Battle Royale, here I come!!

    1. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

Scratch that! Replace Robin with Meta Knight since Robin is a mixed swordfighter/gunner type. Wow. Around 10 swordfighters in the Smash franchise! Let’s complain about too many swordfighters! lol

    1. There really isn’t. We have, what, 10 sword users counting both Mii Swordfighter and Cloud? That’s less than 20% of the roster, and even more so when you consider how damn common are swords in videogames (especially RPGs).

I’d agree with the sentiment of Fire Emblem being over represented, though. It really doesn’t need five reps.

    2. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3

If people want to complain about too much of anything, it should be because of the overabundance of brawlers in Smash, not swordfighters since swordfighters are outnumbered by brawlers & even more so outnumber gunners.

      1. The real problem here is that we’re using a very shitty taxonomy to begin with. The brawler/swordfighter/gunner classification doesn’t work at all for most of the characters already present in Smash, since most don’t easily fit into those categories (otherwise, what the fuck are the Pits?).

I think the good old classification based on gameplay (rushdown, footsie, zoner, wall and the like) is much more useful and precise than the simplistic ‘mii classification’.

        1. You make a good point- those are the types and terms we should be using. We got zoners in Duck Hunt and Samus, Mario, Captain Falcon, and Fox could be considered rushdown, we have a puppeteer character in Rosalina & Luma, Jigglypuff is aerial dominance…

          I could go on.

        2. Pit’s more like a dual-wielding sword fighter, ditto for DP.
Or if you want to be technical, since his bow is only a sword as a secondary mode, you could consider him the same as Samus; a character that uses their projectile weapon [bows, beam cannons, etc] as a melee weapon when in close.

So, Pit and DP = gunners, of a sort.

          1. You can’t really classify them as gunners when they only have a projectile move that isn’t even that important or doesn’t share a strong synergy with the rest of the moveset.

            1. Most of their specials function either as a projectile, or as a foil against them, though.
Same as the Mii gunner; most of its specials are either projectiles or counter-measures against said projectiles.

They’re more of a projectile-focused pair of characters than, say, Ryu or Mario.

But in either case, they’re using bows, that just so happen to have a shape suited for slashing when separated, so I don’t personally count them among the true sword-based characters.

              1. So he’s an anti-projectile character, or an anti-zoner more than anything. Especially so when you consider the reach of its normals.

I don’t see how the kind of weapon is relevant to the classification. If it slashes and they can attack with it, it’s a sword. Doesn’t matter if it shoots light arrows. Otherwise, you get into a whole new mess of punctualizations that don’t make any difference in gameplay.

  11. I’m definitely going to main cloud. Hopefully he’s not overpowered then I’ll probly hate him from day one lol I hope he’s a little faster than Ike tho I would gladly trade a little power for speed

    1. FYI: Cloud has been in multiple games on Nintendo systems as a guest character [theaterythm FF, KH], and FF 7 was originally going to be an N64 game before the deal went sour and Square went over to Sony.

So there’s really no need to feel betrayed; Final Fantasy, and Cloud as an extension of the franchise, has been tied to Nintendo as well, even if we never got FF VII.

        1. And it got plenty of characters.
But between the two, Sony and Nintendo, who do you think needs this kind of PR blast more at the moment?
Hint; it’s the one with a new home console coming that could use FF VII Remake as a launch title…

  12. Interesting, though there are around 513,000 other characters I would have preferred get into Smash before Cloud. Hopefully the ballot winners are decent, cause so far none of the new challengers are doing it for me.

  13. “I’ve seen a hat stand!
    Heard a rubber band!
I’ve seen a needle that done winked its eye!
But I think I’ve seen, about everythiiiiing!
When I’ve seen a smashing Cloud Striiiiife!”

  14. This was very big surprise cloud to be in super smash bros can say it’s bit weird the guy had some stunning moves and powerful attack with stunning stage, i was very impressed so now we have Final fantasy character to join in the fun
