Nicalis Founder Says Wii U Isn’t Much More Powerful Than The PlayStation Vita

Nicalis founder Tyrone Rodriguez has stated on Twitter that the outlook doesn’t look good for the Binding of Isaac Afterbirth on the New Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U. Rodriguez even went so far as to say that the Wii U isn’t really that much more powerful than the PlayStation Vita. Presumably this was mentioned as the company was having trouble getting the game running on the Wii U along with New Nintendo 3DS and the PlayStation Vita.

Thanks, Albert

Who cares what that glorified toaster thinks?! He’s nothing more than a kitchen appliance in my domain.

                        1. My thoughts exactly. We’re talking about a game thats design is based off the original Legend of Zelda for the NES. Each room takes up one screen, only up to four adjacent rooms can be accessed from each room, and in each room there’s probably 30 sprites max. This game is either run on very high level code like Ruby or Python or they’re just terrible at programming.

                          1. 30 Sprites Max? Lmao. Blank Card + Jera anybody? Or even regular game situations like Hush, Ultra Greed and Mega Satan fight. Yeah, no.

They took advantage of the simplistic graphics engine to make it possible to pick up item combinations that literally fill the whole room with your own projectiles, 20 shots per second that split into four other shots which each split into two other shots again, then explode and split into ten shots each, creating fire on the ground while exploding.

Or how about getting an item combination that lets you double the consumable pickups on a room and double them again and double them again until your PC craps out, literally crashing the game?

How about the Hush fight, a boss which creates a dense bullethell type situation on a big 2×2 room (=4 times the size of a normal room), and spawning about 100 of a weak type of enemy during later phases?

And this is part of the fun of playing these games. So I can understand Tyrone being disappointed.

                        1. Insulting a game just because it’s not coming to your platform of choice… Very mature, and not ignorant at all.

You can dislike a developer as much as you want, but his behaviour has no influence whatsoever on the quality of the game. I don’t agree with his statement either, but you don’t see me hating on the entire studio or their game. There is a reason why The Binding of Isaac is one of the most critically acclaimed indie games out there. You shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Of course it’s alright to dislike a game, but the reason for doing so should at least make some sense for your opinion to be justified.

Also, I don’t see how being an indie developer is something to be looked down upon. He’s still a developer, he just doesn’t work for the big guys.

                          1. I’m excuse me but when did I say I only have a wii u for you to say my system of choice, I called him out because of his statement. Yes some indie companies are great your right about that but he still shouldn’t bash a system because he can’t understand the system.

                            1. “Excuse you”, but as far as I’m aware, having a platform of choice doesn’t mean you can’t have any others. The WiiU can still be your platform of choice even if you own other systems as well.
And no, you didn’t call him out, you called out the game he was/is involved with the development of.
As I’ve said in my previous comment, I don’t agree with his statement, it’s a pretty stupid thing to say. And I do agree with you, there is no need to bad-mouth a system just because he can’t manage to optimize the game for it. But yea, none of that changes anything about the quality of the game itself, that’s what I’m trying to say.

                            1. Never assumed that. The WiiU being their platform of choice simply means it’s the platform they prefer over others – whether or not they own any other systems seems irrelevant to that point.

                                1. ???
Literally what are you even talking about? How does ladyrosalina owning other consoles besides the WiiU hold any relevance to me saying that they shouldn’t judge the quality of the game based on the developer’s behaviour? What you just said makes absolutely no sense at all.

I’d suggest you to carefully read the entire line of comments before replying.

                        2. Indie developers are small third party developers. They just self publish or. Have to find a publisher if a retail game.

                      2. Just WTF did they do with Isaac to make it so performance-costly? Like, seriously, WTF? Nintendo got Xenoblade Chronicles to run on the New 3DS in 3D and without any major performance drops, and they’re telling me they can’t get a simple game like Isaac to run on the New 3DS smoothly? I know that the game has a ton of item combinations and a few fancy effects here and there, but seriously, you can’t even compare that to a game like Xenoblade Chronicles! They must have some highly unoptimised pieces of code somewhere in the game. I’m already noticing this with the current New 3DS version. The game freezes for a few frames every time certain effects spawn on the screen (like lasers or gas clouds).

                        1. I could possibly understand the ORIGINAL Binding of Isaac (which was a flash game that was very poorly optimized for any computer honestly), but Rebirth ran perfectly on my old laptop (before I got a new one even). I think that they just spent more time optimizing it for the PS4 and PC and are assuming that running-poorly = less powerful system (and has nothing to do with necessary optimization).

                        2. I kinda wonder that also. I really enjoy Binding of Issac on my N3DS, but I can’t quite figure out why it wouldn’t run on the regular 3DS… Hmm.

                        3. RPG Hacker? Are you from the German SMW Hacking Forums? Lmao, that’s amazing, good to see you here. XD

Anyway, you had the item combinations as sort of a side-mention. But nah, if you’ve done some of the stuff I’ve done, you should know better. How about Soy Milk + Cricket’s Body + Parasite + Ipecac + Hot Bombs + Sad Bombs? Firing about 20 shots per second that split into four shots each, possibly splitting into two shots each again if they hit a wall or an enemy, exploding on enemy/ground contact, leaving a fire on the ground and, once again, each splitting into about 10 shots each? Blank Card + Jera + Battery Charge and, say, one penny on the ground. Literally lets you double the penny, then double the two pennies, then double the four pennies and so on until you literally make the game crash (depending on your PC).

And this, in my opinion, is part of the fun of the game. Even then, regular game situations (especially bosses they’ve added in the Afterbirth expansion) sometimes get hundres of enemies and bullets on the screen. The new Hush fight is on a room that is twice as large as the most bullet helly fight in Rebirth was, and still manages to be packed more densely with bullets than that one, ALSO spawning hundreds of weak enemies at once in later phases.

I think it was a deliberate choice by the developers – Keeping the graphics engine simple so they can use almost all the horse power of gaming PCs to get ridiculous stuff like this that would never be possible in Xenoblade Chronicles. I mean, imagine tens of thousands of projectiles or pennies on the screen in a game like that – Probably not even a GTX Titan would be able to handle that.

                          1. Yeah, that’s me! :P

I get your point, but even that number of effects/bullets shouldn’t be a problem, because the effects are still quite simple. In a good and well-optimised rendering pipeline (which I admit can be hard to accomplish sometimes) that still shouldn’t be much of a problem. Hundreds of items in a room, yeah, maybe. I could see that causing some slowdown. But not because of the rendering, mostly because of each item colliding with each other, which could get costly for the CPU. But even that shouldn’t be a problem when optimised. Plus, there is always the option of scaling down the game for certain hardware. Like, does every single effect really need to be that fancy on the 3DS, or can you make some of them a bit simpler? And is it really important that you can fill a room with an unlimited number of items, or is it enough to cap it at a high number (like 100)? These are all questions to consider. The current version only has so much trouble, I assume, because they’re trying to port the game 1 : 1 to the system, which rarely works.

Even then, we’re only talking about the 3DS version here. I could get if they couldn’t accomplish the DLC for the 3DS only, since it IS their weakest platform, but Wii U? The Wii U is essentially better than my current PC, the only thing my PC has more of is RAM (4 GB with the Wii U’s 1 GB of designated game RAM). Okay, the the CPU in my PC also has a different architecture (x86_64 VS Power-PC), but that shouldn’t really matter. My PC has no trouble running Binding of Isaac. And it only has a NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT, a graphics card from like 2006 or so. It doesn’t even support Direct3D 11. I think your “GTX Titan” example was taken totally out of the blue and isn’t valid. Now if my old PC can run the game fine, Wii U should also be able to, with some hardware-specific optimizations. In fact, it should run the game a lot better, since consoles are way better and rendering game graphics than PCs (at least until Direct3D 12 appears in more PC games). And this comes from someone working as a game programmer. I’m pretty sure “Afterbirth probably can’t run on Wii U” is more than an exaggeration. They probably just quickly ported the DLC over so that it compiled, gave it a try and noticed that it was running horribly. Well, of course it does without getting any hardware-specific optimizations. But when it gets those, it should run just as fine as the PC version.

                            1. “The current version only has so much trouble, I assume, because they’re trying to port the game 1 : 1 to the system, which rarely works.”

Anything else would cause a huge problem. I’ve explained this in another comment on this news article, but I’ll try again.

The Binding of Isaac is a game where every little change they make to the engine, every glitch that is missing in one version but present in another, every cap they put on things, is going to be a huge gamechanger. Why? Because this is a game you’re meant to “dive into”. Figure out how to use every little hidden mechanic to your advantage to get more items, more consumable pickups and so on. The community of this game is constantly trying to either data mine these games or trying to test theories in controlled environments. There are people who do literally hundreds of Isaac runs testing theories like “Donating 10 coins to the donation machine gives you a 5% increase on your chance for angel rooms”.

Now, okay, but why would it be a problem for two versions of the game to work differently?

Because Afterbirth added daily challenges. If the versions aren’t exactly the same, a player of any given version will be at a big advantage or disadvantage. And we’re not talking “moving up or down a few ranks”. Something like a “100 consumable cap per room” might make the difference between rank 100 and rank 500 on the leaderboards.

The developers have three options at this point:
                              1. Remove the daily challenges from the handheld versions or make the leaderboards non-cross-platform. If they did this, I (and probably many others) would consider these versions gimped versions of the game.
                              2. Go through with it anyway and put caps on things like you suggested. If you think this is a good idea after everything I’ve told you, you probably have never experienced the Isaac community. We (and I’m not even denying that includes me to an extent) lose our f*cking shit over every nerf or buff items or characters recieve and every little unfair imbalance we find. Nicalis is already getting so much crap for the scoring system of the dailies, they are basically releasing a patch every three days to tweak it. If there is something in the game(s) that means “the difference between rank 100 and rank 500” between two versions of the game, then the people at Nicalis might as well just all commit suicide to get it over with before people rush to their HQ and rip them apart like they’re zombies from the “[…] of the Dead” series.
                              3. Make all the versions exactly the same and hope they can make them run well. Personally, I think this the only “right” solution to the issue. But it makes the game run like ass on Vita (which is the version I’ve played along with the PC version), and I’m assuming it’s the same deal on New 3DS and WiiU.

                              1. I get your point, but I don’t agree with everything you said. People who are serious about the rankings probably use the Steam version, anyways, so I don’t think many people will care about the rankings in the other versions, anyways. Even if they do – and even if all versions were the same – there is another problem. Leaderboards are ALWAYS system-dependent, unless you have your own server, but I’m sure the Nicalis/Isaac people don’t have that (game servers are very, very expensive). The current Leaderboards in Isaac are most likely provided by Steam via the Steam API. If they ported the game to 3DS, Wii U and Vita, they would only have access to the servers from Nintendo and Sony respectively. In other words: If they manage to port the DLC, the games WILL have separate Leaderboards, that’s for sure. And since that’s the case, there is no problem with just adding some system-dependent engine changes.

I also get your point that Isaac players are crazy about discovering small engine-related details. But how is adjusting the engine a problem to this? If anything, this only gives the players more to discover. Basically a different game on each platform. I mean, just look at me. I already completed the game on PC (getting all but one achievement) and still have fun experiencing the game again on 3DS, even with the little changes there may be. In fact, I view this as a bonus.

I also don’t agree with the “game running like ass”. I haven’t played the Vita version, but at least for the 3DS version, that’s not the case anymore. It did have many crashes and freezes before, but it seems like they’ve fixed them all with the latest EU patch. Now the only problem remaining is micro freezes (like 1 or 2 frames) when certain effects spawn on the screen, but that’s seriously not that bad and the game is perfectly playable like that. I’ve already completed The Chest and The Dark Room with The Lost on 3DS and didn’t have many problems doing so, so that pretty much shows that the game is perfectly playable on the 3DS. But this is probably very subjective. I can imagine that some people would be really bothered even by those micro freezes, but even then, platform-specific adjustments would just make all that much more sense.

Even all of these things considered, if the community really WAS as bad as you say and would lose their shit about every minor change done to the 3DS version, this is one of the cases where I would say “fuck the community”. Yeah, I know this sounds harsh, but seriously. The hardcore Isaac fans still have the PC version of the game and they should be happy with that. Therefore the developers can leave the console and handheld versions of the game for “normies” like me, who aren’t that crazy about every minor change done to the game and only want to enjoy Isaac on the go. As a game programmer myself, my personal standpoint is that adjustments HAVE to be made to a game ported to different systems in order to make for the best experience on each system. Also sometimes you have to go against the will of the majority of fans in order to aim for the greater good, which in my opinion in this case would be getting Afterbirth on the 3DS in the first place. I know you probably don’t agree with that, and that’s fine, I respect that. It’s just my personal view on this. I, as non-hardcore Isaac fan, would love having Afterbirth on the 3DS, even if it had to come with a few limitations.

                      3. Did this moron actually say that the Wii U wasn’t that much more powerful than the Vita but yet the Vita doesn’t even do HD? This guy needs to slap himself with a metal glove repeatedly….smh

                        1. The Vita doesn’t do HD because it’s a handheld console, not a console meant to be plugged into the PC. Of course it won’t do HD (unless you expected the screen of the Vita to be of a high resolution, which isn’t probably needed in a context of a dedicated gaming device). Note that I’m talking about the standard PlayStation Vita, not variations that can plug into the TV (like the PlayStation TV).

                      4. WHY EVEN TRY TO LIE,WHAT A IDIOT….i remember when noughty dog did this back in the day in a magazine pull out

a gaming mag (CLEARLY A BUNCH OF DERPSTATION 2 FANBOYS) did a breakdown of the consoles and used noughty dog as the COUGH INDEPENDANT expert remember they were a sony dev

they discribed the gamecube as some HICK console and ps2 as some super computer blatantly lieing about the specs

I LOVE HOW SHILL SONY FANS LAP UP THESE LIES KNOW THERE LIES AND EXIST IN A WEIRD MENTAL ILLNESS FANBOY BUBBLE

                      5. Who the fuck was even asking for the Binding Isaac anyway, because it damn sure wasn’t me. That game look boring as shit from the beginning. I didn’t that piece of shit on my PS$ or my PC, why the fuck would I buy that crap on my Wii U or 3DS!?

                        1. If he honestly thinks of himself to be on the same level as Kojima, then he’s got a serious ego problem. He’s nowhere near that level.
If anything, he’s more like Notch; he managed to make one popular game, ports it to every console ever to make max $$$, and that’s it.

                      6. The guy is obviously trolling and it’s obvious that coding isn’t part of his expertise. As others have stated there are more demanding games on wii u. I would like to get an explanation on wt the problem really is rather than just blaming the console for you not being able to run your game on it.

                      7. I own the binding of Isaac on the wiiu and honestly not that impressed. The game locks up on me like every 2nd run through I do and graphically the game looks like it was meant for a mobile device.
Other than that it’s just a basic dungeon crawler with shit dungeon randomizer that makes some playthrougs of the game terribly unbalanced.
I bought it for $12 but honestly it should be priced quite a bit cheaper because the only value to the game is the stupid amount of power ups you can unlock, but most of which do the same thing or nothing at all.
Hopefully they can release some quality titles in the future.

                        1. “Terribly unbalanced”
Yes, for a first time player. There are a lot of semi-hidden mechanics that can make it possible to win at least 70% of your runs solely based on strategy, even if you play somewhat badly.

“basic dungeon crawler”, “power ups […] which do […] nothing at all”
Ohhh boy have you never experienced the joy of ridiculous Isaac item synergies.

                        1. I’m predicting this. “It’s too advanced we don’t know how to handle this.”

Jokes aside, people will still complain and bitch about stuff about the nx. They will purposefully look for things the console can’t do.

It only took one third party to drop out and bash the wii u and then everyone else did following behing copying and pasting what was said before.

                      8. I would recommend that he play AC Liberation, then try AC3 for the Wii U. 2 games from the same developers, in the same year, for each system. It’s the perfect example to look at. It surprises me how much people undervalue the power of the Wii U.

                        1. I know right? Hyrule Warriors for Wii U is what stands out to me, that game is absolutely gorgeous, looks and plays way better than any dynasty warriors game for ps3/360/vita.

                      9. I believe he’s only complaining due to the fact that the Binding of Isaac is not designed to run on non-PC like consoles in the first place. The Wii U, Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita are all decisively non-“PC like” in design. For starters, they don’t even use an x86-64 architecture like standard PCs, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

You can’t just take a game and run it as-is on another architecture without some sort of tweaks, especially if the architecture is completely different than the original in terms of behavior.

It’s easy to port to the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One due to those consoles being PC-like, but the PlayStation Vita uses a cellphone-like architecture, the Wii U a complex architecture that can be difficult to optimize code to if you’re not familiar with the hardware and the 3DS, a completely unique architecture with its own sets of standards.

                      10. This is just sad. If it anything it shows you they just aren’t great at developing their games on anything besides PC, let alone optimizing them.

There isn’t a reason in the world why their games can’t run well on any three of these system they’re talking about, other than their lack of ability with them. All they did was make themselves look bad by saying this.

If I was Sony or Nintendo, I would so be all up in their asses right now about his comments. Tastefully of course, but I wouldn’t let someone who can’t properly work on my systems trash them because of their poor development skill set.

                        1. The problem is: The game needs to be 100% exactly the same on all consoles. If any of the ports removed any of the items or item combinations, had any additional or missing glitches/mechanics or handled stats and the like just slightly different from the other versions, it’s gonna be a big problem. Why?

The Binding of Isaac’s community is extremely dedicated to the game, trying to figure out every last possible way to optimize their strategies. This is a game you’re MEANT to “dive into”. Figure out how to break it, how exactly every single last item combination works to your advantage and so on. The skill ceiling, or (in this case) the knowledge/strategy ceiling isn’t just over the moon for TBOI:R, it’s basically somewhere in the Oort Cloud right now.

Well, so what? Why would that be such a big issue?
Afterbirth added daily challenges. Just by a few things being slightly different, a player of any given version would be at a huge advantage or disadvantage. We’re not talking “moving up or down a few slots here or there”, no, for how the game is designed, it might make the difference between Rank 100 and Rank 5000 on the global leaderboards.

The versions have to (functionally) run exactly the same. And this is the other aspect of the Isaac community – If ANYTHING in the game is unbalanced, we (look, I’m not even denying that that includes me to an extent) basically flip our shit like we’re five years old. Nicalis has already recieved copius amounts of shit for the daily challenges’ scoring system. They basically have to tweak it every few days.

                          1. No amount of excuses change anything. Plain and simple, more demanding games exist on every single system he mentioned, and it only takes one semi working eye and half a brain to see this. So there is no reason other than his inability to properly use them, that he can’t do better on the 3DS, Wii U or PS Vita.

I doubt anyone would have had a problem with him admitting he’s having trouble, but he had to take it too far by making claims that are so obviously not true. And that alone shows his lack of skill, to make such a stupid statement in regard to the problems he’s having.

A good developer doesn’t blame others for the hurdles they may come across in development, they figure out ways to jump them.

                      11. The recommended system requirements for rebirth are a fucking Pentium 4 and an HD3000 series card. -_-

This says a lot more about his ability to optimize than the consoles he’s criticising. He lacks the correct skill to do it, but according to him, the consoles are too weak. Ffs

                        1. The Vita is a beautiful piece of hardware that doesn’t have games to play on it.
Costs almost exactly as much as the 3ds in Germany but probably has double or triple the horse power, a much better UI, better buttons, better touch screen.
                          No games, though. Sigh.

                        2. I do occasionally. I play it as often as my Wii U these days, which isn’t saying much. I just keep it around because of remote play for when I go out of town.

                          1. I never purchased a Vita because I knew it wouldn’t have enough games when compared to the 3DS. Whenever I leave home I make sure my 3DS is on me.

It sucks that the Vita has very little games though. It had a lot of potential.

                      12. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3 ~*Proud Owner of the great PS4 & the great n3DS! Oh & I guess the dying mediocre Wii U is okay, too!*~

Oh look! Yet another developer blaming the console for his lack of skill, or lack of commitment!

                      13. Is that surprising though? The Vita can play PS4 titles on it…. Power doesn’t mean everything though, so there’s no reason to get your panties in a bunch over it. The Vita was a huge missed opportunity for Sony.

                        1. The Vita CANT natively play PS4 games, it can stream them, but it cant natively play them. Streaming doesnt really require that much power either. Hell, the 3DS can Play Dragon Quest 10. Yes thats a PC//Wii U/Wii game. Are we now going to say that the 3DS is as strong as a PC? Of course not, because its just streaming a game.

                        1. To each their own, but the PSP was really great. The Vita had a decent start, but I completely understand why people are very disappointed with it, as am I.

                          1. As much as I shit on my Vita, I still love the little thing. Such a power house in such a little space. I Usually shit on it, but its only because Im mad at Sony for failing to deliver on their promise, but oh well, you live and you learn. The PSP was an awesome system, all those RPG’s and TRPG’s, what a dream handheld.

                              1. Thats the thing, it really hasnt. In all actuality, if you count all the indies, and crossplatform titles, the Vita should have well over if not close to 100 games this year alone. Developers keep putting games on it because the attach rate is incredible. The only problem is being part of that ecosystem (Playstation.) See its a gift and a curse, because you benefit from cheaper games (cross-buy) so you get to play those Ps4/Ps3 indies and smaller titles on your vita, but thats just it. You dont need a Vita if you do have a PS3 or PS4.

The reason I blame Sony, is because the initial pitch of the console was that we were going to be able to play “Console like” games on a handheld, which for the better part of the first year, we were. This is why a lot of us say that the Vita has no games, not because it doesnt, but because we were sold the console one way, but the platform has completely 180 giving us something we never asked for. We were told we get console like game, and since we havent gotten them in quite some time, we raise pitch forks and yell loudly that the PS Vita has no games (that we were sold on.)
