Metacritic Shows Nintendo Reviews Currently At All Time Low For Past 10 Years

nintendo_data_2015

We have had some great Nintendo games this year including Super Mario Maker, Yoshi’s Woolly World, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D and many more. However, we have also had some titles that haven’t reviewed quite as well as Nintendo would have hoped. These games include Chibi Robo! Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival and Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash. NeoGAF member TI82 has collected data from Metacritic and it shows that Nintendo reviews are currently at an all time low for the past 10 years. Regardless, it should be noted that Xenoblade Chronicles X and Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam have yet to be released.

  1. Of course. Splatoon is pretty much the only real, great new game they released in 2015. And even that game had flaws, it launched with very little content so the scores were lower than they could have been.

There were so many bad/mediocre games this year, like Amiibo Festival, that Chibi-Robo game for 3DS, a rushed Mario Tennis without any content or features… I probably forgot a few others. I’m not sure if Devil’s Third counts since it’s not made by Nintendo.

Mario Maker helped, but it’s literally just a level editor. The new Yoshi game was good but it’s a filler game, really. You’re not missing out on much if you don’t play it. M&L: Paper Jam isn’t out until 2016 in America. This was not a good year for Nintendo… especially compared to 2014.

    1. Outside of Majoras Mask, I don’t think I bought any other 3DS game this year. That’s pretty bad when there’s only a single game on the console that peaked my attention. eshop has been lacking this year too.

          1. to be honest, Other M sure was bad for Nintendo quality but the game is not broken or the plot is shitty

The big mistake there was Samus, but if you ignore(sure, like that’s easy), the game is somewhat enjoyable

A big middle finger that was kept held up to us when they announced Federation Farce. :/

            1. Don’t get me wrong, playing as a Federation Marine is not in itself a bad idea- it’s the teamwork aspect they’re practically forcing on you when Metroid has (with very few exceptions) always been about exploring on your lonesome in an eerie, ominous environment, and it comes after a five-year drought from the last game which nearly wrecked the franchise.

And the fucking awful chibi Mega Bloks design, the worst offender of them all.

    1. Yeah, it’s been their thing since the WiiU launched. I wouldn’t say “shit” games exactly but just “rushed” games. Usually one would think a rushed game to be a game full of glitches, patches, crappy graphics, render errors and/or a game unfinished.
But with Nintendo, you get rushed games that have scarce content, uncreative concepts/quicky concepts, cut out content, limitations, offline play, and/or bad online play/content/limitations.
Firstly, I’d like to say that the Wii U was such a premature console…
      a “rushed” console.
Nintendo wanted to give birth to their baby too early even though They were supposed to be due a year later. So by having a rushed console, you get rushed games. Granted there are SOME Nin games that contradict this, but most don’t.
The first example would be Mario 3D World. It’s not a bad game, just rushed. I could see it from a mile away. It wasn’t its Content, it was its concept. Most of us wanted an actual 3D mario game like all the ones before, but no… Because Nintendo knew that a real 3D mario game would take too long to develop for a console in a drought, so they had to opt for a more, “quick”, “rushed”, approach, thus 3DW was born.
Two other examples that fit this “rushed game” picture are ones that you may have never thought of as rushed.
And those are… Mario Kart 8 and Smash 4.
SSB4 is not as rushed as other games were. There was just cut out content and some uncreative concepts. Single player was probably the least addicting compared to the past games, especially due to the fact that adventure mode was completely cut out, plus the fact that most of the modes before were nerfed or rushed to be more simple and uncreative. Online play is mediocre… for a game launching in the 8th generation there should have been more modes along with freedom of speech; the addition of tourney mode was cool but it’s dwindled down to this small community were you hope to god you get joined/paired with someone.
As for MK8, it’s not a bad game, it had great graphics and an epic soundtrack but the game was just rushed, I mean think about it, what was conceptual difference in this game compared to the previous entries?? We still have the same basic racing, same online play, same overall concept, with the addition of some cut out content. Sure we had antigravity and DLC, but that didn’t do much to the overall concept. As an 8th Mario Kart, as an 8th generation game– there should have been more than just simple racing. Even the Wii and DS versions did more. MK Wii had the MK Channel which had great additional content, challenges and cool tournaments, while the DS had events, challenges and mini bossfights! The 8th generation cut that all out including battle tracks!
I think by now you understand my whole point and I don’t need to mention more games…
I don’t usually post walls of text xD but Hopefully most of you that actually redd can understand or at least process what my point is. :P

        1. Ha, I know. I don’t usually post huge walls of text, but basically what I said is that because the Wii U was a rushed console most of the games we got/getting are rushed out in some way.

How is a game lacking in content that’s being sold for 60 bucks, the full price of a content filled game, not considered as unfinished in itself? *cough*Splatoon*cough*

You should talk with bigger posts, dude, because this surprised me. I didn’t realize just how intelligent you are. Then again, I can see why you don’t with all the fanboys or Nintendo defenders there are on this blog. ._.

          1. There’s a difference between being a fanboy and being a supporter but still knowing shit when you smell it.

Ridley and I disagree on a few things, Splatoon in particular, but I respect that, because he isn’t *completely* wrong (Splatoon should have had more initial content than it started with, I concede), but I also think he isn’t completely right (I think the game’s method of obtaining weapons and maps is fine and ensures players coming back to see what’s new while he objects).

Ridley and I have some comment chains- we know the other isn’t a fanboy.

          2. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3 ~*Proud Owner of the great PS4 & the great n3DS! Oh & I guess the dying mediocre Wii U is okay, too!*~

By my logic, anyone that shoots my opinion down & says Nintendo is 100% right & that I am 100% wrong, thus disrespecting MY OPINION, is a fanboy. Man of Brisk respects my opinion on the matters regarding Nintendo even when we disagree.

    2. Metacritic scores for Wii U 1st party and 3rd party exclusives

      Super Mario 3D World – 93
Super Smash Bros For Wii U – 92
      Bayonetta 2 – 91
      Wind Waker HD – 90
      Super Mario Maker – 88
      Mario Kart 8 – 88
      Pikmin 3 – 87
      New Super Mario Bros. U – 84
Donkey Kong Country Returns Tropical Freeze – 83
      Splatoon – 81
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker – 81
      Lego City Undercover – 80

      Please shut up

    1. I have a feeling that next year’s score will actually be pretty high compared to most other years considering all the good games were delayed to next year. We don’t even have an idea of any actual new games for late 2016 yet.

      1. I don’t know. It wouldn’t surprise me if we ended up with a similar score. The biggest releases I can think of on the Wii U side are Zelda (a +85 by default), Pokkén and Star Fox. I can see review outlets giving those last two marks around the 70-80 range by the way they’re shaping up.

  2. Nintendo clearly stretched to fill content this year, especially on WiiU as their cornerstone games were delayed to 2016.

    1. Especially user reviews. There’s no checks whether or not you own a game. I’ve seen pictures of accounts that only gives 0’s or 10’s. Then again, score means nothing, in all honesty. Everyone has a different taste in games.

      1. Metacritics user scores mean nothing, that much is true. However, if the marks given by the critics and the users are more or less similar, you can usually tell it’s been graded fairly.

Then again, every AAA game gets +75 nowadays, so I don’t know.

  3. Not a suprise there where great games this year but the game’s where everybody are waiting for are al delayed till next year and then you have the NX and i’m pretty sure that they wil focus more on launche titels than making game’s for a dead consol

    1. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3 ~*Proud Owner of the great PS4 & the great n3DS! Oh & I guess the dying mediocre Wii U is okay, too!*~

Sadly, they are listening to some of the hardcore audience. Just listening to the WRONG part of it. Mainly the defenders, white knights, & the “I got my head stuck up your ass because I loves you!” people. Of course, every developer & publisher has those morons but still. This is Nintendo we’re talking about here, not EA, Ubishit, etc.

  4. Title of this article is poorly worded. This year is a 10 year low, not an “all time low for the past 10 years.” That would imply that the scores for the past 10 years are the lowest they’ve ever been.

  5. It’s no surprise really, especially since they’ve released a lot of spin-off titles. I haven’t played the Animal Crossing ones but plan to get them, so I won’t judge them, but Tri Force Heroes was so boring and frustrating. Playing with a bunch of idiots that can’t see the obvious solution in front of you wasn’t fun in any way to me. Tennis is only appealing to a select group really. Yoshi’s Woolly World wasn’t likely to get good reviews as most Yoshi titles seem to get poor reviews, perhaps because of how easy they tend to be. Nintendo has definitely been most successful with Amiibo. They’d be even more successful if the stock had been good the past year, they’ve missed a lot of sales from people buying online through eBay and such. Hopefully we seem more great titles next year. With the Pokemon anniversary next year I don’t doubt we’ll get a great Pokemon title.

I’m surprised. Surprised you aren’t giving it a pass because it’s “free.”

      2. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3 ~*Proud Owner of the great PS4 & the great n3DS! Oh & I guess the dying mediocre Wii U is okay, too!*~

Then again, this game is total crap. Because unlike the rushed Splatoon which lacked a ton of content it’s first few months, this game is an even bigger cash grab.

    1. “Yoshi’s Woolly World wasn’t likely to get good reviews as most Yoshi titles seem to get poor reviews, perhaps because of how easy they tend to be.”

The original Yoshi’s Island and Yoshi’s Island DS say hello.

Nintendo’s Seal of Quality is CLEARLY not on Nintendo’s mind this gen since they had to rush a load of games for the Wii Fail U. Maybe Nintendo learned their lesson to NOT fucking run off 3rd parties with “COME ONE, COME ALL!!! TO NINTENDO’S SEAL OF INNOVATION!!! Where we force our bullshit on you & our consumers! Sure most will hate it but that’s why we got the very small minority of our loyal suckers-err… We mean fans!”

Don’t mind him, dude. Brandon’s still ignorant of how Nintendo really is these days. He’s still got this fantasy ideal that Nintendo is pure & beyond corruption. Sadly, Nintendo has been corrupted ever since the Wii hit 50 million consoles sold. It’s all about the money now… and how many suckers they can manipulate money out of.

          1. You seemed to have ignored some of my past posts about how I don’t think that. Namely Federation Force, Youtube Policy, Amiibo Festival, and this year’s E3 (the less we forget the better.)

          1. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3 ~*Proud Owner of the great PS4 & the great n3DS! Oh & I guess the dying mediocre Wii U is okay, too!*~

I’m a gamer so I’m very passionate when it comes to talking about video games. No one says you have to read my rants & then try to railroad my opinions because you don’t like them.

  8. 1) You cannot just compare review scores like that with different reviewers, different amounts of reviews and pretend that correlation means something. There is no correlation

    2) Nintendo is still publisher of the year this year with 3 GOTY contenders, and a fourth in Japan

I wouldn’t qualify Splatoon as game of the year, either. Why? It was a 20 dollar game it’s first month because it didn’t have much content & was being sold for 60 bucks. I know, I know. It’s been getting updates to fix that, but Nintendo has the bad habit of doing something that really should only be done once in awhile multiple fucking times in a row. Example: going the innovation route two gens in a fucking row, making it the console’s core! First the Wii with motion control & now the Wii U with it’s Gamepad.

        1. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3 ~*Proud Owner of the great PS4 & the great n3DS! Oh & I guess the dying mediocre Wii U is okay, too!*~

That’s my biggest reason why I fucking hate Splatoon! It could very well be the start of a very bad habit for Nintendo. :/
