Pachter Says The Nintendo NX May Reach 30 Million Install Base

Famed video industry analysts Michael Pachter has once again shared his predictions about the forthcoming Nintendo NX. It’s not all doom and gloom as Pachter believes that the device could eventually have an install base of 30 million. He has also shook off the notion that the company would go third-party, well for the short term anyway. Here’s what he had to say on SIFTD.

“I would say modest potential that it bombs. I would give them a 60 percent chance of success, I think they are smart people, I think they have learned a lot from what they did wrong with the Wii U. Are they going to get the Wii magic back? Probably not. But if they go back to a conventional-like console, their only problem they have now is they are very late in the cycle so they’re not going to sell that many. Could they sell 30 million? Sure. They could sell enough to make a difference and make a profit. They’re not getting out of the handheld business until the sales drop to zero – three or four million a year. And that is probably five, seven or eight years out. So no, they’re not going to get out of hardware.”

  1. I just sent this in too Sickr but it’s ok. Pachter doesn’t wanna give Nintendo any kind of chance. As I recall he was the same guy that said the Wii would fail and we all know how turned out don’t we?

    1. He’s only speculating and that’s a tough call. He has said some pretty stupid stuff through the years though. Like cancelling the Wii U and go thirdparty for Xbox One and PS4 lol

Sadly, the Wii did fail in a way as it helped give rise to mobile gaming as every casual that got into gaming because of the Wii left it & went straight to cell phone gaming which is cheaper for them. Just like the N64 gave rise to PlayStation. :/

Not to mention the Wii name dragged the Wii U into mediocrity.

          1. Not far fetched at all. Wii was highly viewed as a casual machine. Loyal gamers felt burned. Wii U name in itself was a small indicator that Nintendo was going to cater to casuals again. Gimmick controller just like the Wii had. Launch was terrible and there were hardly any quality first party AAA games. New Super Mario Bros. U instead of a 3D Mario. No Zelda or Metroid in site. No Star Fox. Nintendo Land was one of their best games at launch and though fun at times, geared more towards casuals. Nintendo gave themselves the image of casual gaming and they haven’t done enough to convince a large portion of gamers that they have gone away from that. Loyal gamers have major trust issues with Nintendo. The Wii U had been a failure, as this is part of the reason. The other part would be all the droughts. There are some really good games for it, but not enough. The Wii was a short-term success, but long-term failure.

            1. There is also the fact that many people were confused as thought the Wii U was just an add on and not a new console. Nintendo did not market properly and so the confusion lingered. I think some people to this day are confused about it. Gamers know the difference. But casuals and non-gamers such as parents do not.

It’s not far fetched but the truth. The Wii name has a lot of negativity attached to the name so therefore anything that name gets attached to will have that negativity effectively attached to the product. If you knew anything about business, about life in general, you’d realize a name means EVERYTHING! Tell me. Would you attach the term nazi to anything you’re trying to release? Would you go & legally change your name to Adolf Hitler? How about creating a name for your group or company that would use the initals KKK? If you need more proof, watch Bar Rescue. Do I need to go on?

            1. I think you and the others who arguments against me missunderstand my comment. Sorry for not being as clear as I want to be. I also now find out that I might’ve missunderstood your comment I was answering to.

You are all right about that the Wii got the casual stamp, and that the name for Wii U confused newer costumers. So I totally agree with you that the naming is part of the reason Wii U is where it is now.

What I mean is partly that Wii U could’ve gotten better response and sales if Nintendo went full steam on telling consumers that it is a completly new console. They flat out just didn’t.

The reason for my earlier comment is basically that: It’s not the Wiis (the past) fault of the Wii Us (current) for lack of sales. It’s the marketing and decision for the Wii U brand (current).

True but most casuals were into other things & thought video games was for children & loser adults. But thanks to the Wii, they jumped on board the video game train but were too cheap to continue the hobby so went straight to mobile gaming instead.

    3. lol “learned from wii U” the wii u was a stop game device. the whole point was to learn from it. just like they used the DSi to learn stuff to make the 3DS. just like the SP was to learn before they made the DS.
everything from UI, games, graphics, HD, online, network, eshop, controller, exe the whole point was to test the waters before they started working on the NX. that’s why Nintendo was never worried when it dident do well. the whole point was to learn.

what a terrible analist when he cant even see that’s what they did. that’s even why it was called the wii U. just like the DS went to DSi

  2. i think pachter is saying that the NX will have a strong feeling on selling 30 million units once its release because i think nintendo is being too generous on the consoles sales and there titles but the Wii U is not gonna last long i think it had a few years of life left.

  3. I feel he’s making too much predictions now. We don’t KNOW anything about the NX at all yet so I feel this is a far sighted (if that’s the right term to use) prediction. I feel he should be speculating on what the console is and not how well it will do. To early for that

  4. Such ignorance whether positive or negative… I might at as well roast a bong up and give you all my thoughts on whatever I feel like too… love to get paid for that

Damn it all! He jinxed it!

      1. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3 ~*Proud Owner of the great PS4 & the great n3DS! Oh & I guess the dying mediocre Wii U is okay, too!*~

Fuck Pachter! I’m more concerned about him jinxing the NX!

  6. BAKA, the Wii U IS making a profit, not a record setting one, but a profit none the less. Also why do people do this? Why would you think the NX “Home Console version” would be competing with Xbox One and PS4? Did the Gamecube compete with PS1? Did the original Xbox or PS2 compete with the N64? NO, NX Home Console would be the first 9th gen console, and until a “PS5” or next Xbox comes along it would NOT be competing with anything.

    1. Especially when it is made of some sort of gelatin you place your hands into while special contact lenses are fitting onto your eye balls and that is how you play… crazy right?

    2. Rogue Master XenoRidley X3 ~*Proud Owner of the great PS4 & the great n3DS! Oh & I guess the dying mediocre Wii U is okay, too!*~

Still a failure just like the Wii. As some of you people say about sales don’t mean shit when it comes to games like Call of Duty, the same rule applies to Nintendo.

  7. Not seen the Console, not seen any features, not seen the Specs, not seen any games, not seen any advertising, not seen Gamer reactions to the system. So please explain to me, how anybody can predict ANYTHING related to the F*cking NX. Pachter=Grade A Moron.

  8. There are very few mistakes that Nintendo made for Wiiu, look below:

    1)No advertising
    2)The console name was wrong
3)U people meant upgrade to Wii
4)Gamepad just new controller from Wii one
5)Console wasn’t powerful as other two
    6)No third party support

Now looking at these points these were in the start console in the market and it’s been out for 3 years some of the games looks stunning play great and look close to PS4 if not better, the consumers still not understanding how good is the Wiiu the first party and console exclusives are best on Nintendo console, what world are these consumers in they are totally stupid they just rely on the point what I have made.

Pachter is very silly there is no information on the console as yet, how can a person say how many units will sell, Sony has always been tough competitor since PS1 and has lot of developers and have increased from console to console, PS4 is selling so strong NX will struggle to compare, it will be very tough job for Nintendo come to the top, Don’t think NX be any different to Wiiu most consumers are gone towards PS4 and Xboxone.

  9. Wow. This guy is so out of touch. For one thing, I don’t think Nintendo has learned anything from the failure of the Wii U.

I’m afraid you are right. My inner Nintendo fanboy wants to just scream & cry that it just isn’t true. :/
