We have finally found out that the last new character for Super Smash Bros is none other than the Umbra Witch, Bayonetta. She must have won the fighter ballot that went up a few months back during which everyone was given the chance to vote. She was the number one choice in Europe and ranked in the top five in the United States. She was the number one character worldwide! She will be coming in February.

I find it incredibly hard to believe she was number one or in the top five. And who asked for corrin?? These are the only two we are getting? Trash. Bayonetta is cool, but come on. What a let down. I feel like she was just picked because of Nintendo and platinums relationship.
Bayonetta is pretty cool, but I agree, who voted for Corrin? I don’t even know who he is, and I play Fire Emblem occasionally. Hardly a “fan”, but they’re fun every now and again. Personally, I think there’s too many Fire Emblem characters in Smash. His/her part on the roster would be better occupied by someone else.
But oh well. Nothing we can do about now.
Corrin is the avatar’s default/canon name for Fates.
Bayonetta is the highest rated game in the Wii U, plus 2 is exclusive, while Wolf is just a copy of Fox, and Daisy would be a copy of Peach, and I don’t think Shantae or Shovel Knight are as awesome, cool, and unique as Bayo. Seriously, Bayonetta was the best option, she is original, completely new, and I’m so glad she won, she was the #1 WORLDWIDE for a reason!
Plus, remember we need new surprises for the next Smash in a few years, whether it has Sakurai involved or not.
Nothing against Bayonetta, but in my personal view, I wouldn’t call her nearly as iconic and recognizable as the other characters in the roster, especially as far as 3rd-party characters go.
But oh well, if Sakurai thinks she’s a good fit, so be it, I suppose.
WAY more iconic than Daisy, Wolf, Shantae, or Shovel Knight, which are others that people wanted… And more original and new, all her moves are SO different to the rest, so I’m glad, she is very fresh.
I was mainly talking 3rd-party characters. In my opinion, being iconic and globally known should be an important requirement for 3rd-party characters, and among the likes of Sonic, Pac-Man and Mega Man, for example, I just don’t think she can match up to them.
And yes, I as well believe that Shovel Knight and Shantae wouldn’t have been the best choices either.
But yea, in the end, it’s just up to Sakurai and Nintendo.
And why should she match up with them? You’re comparing 80s video game icons with a banging character that came out on the WiiU last year? (no pun intended ;)) She has made a hit since Bayo2 with her unique design and gameplay style and definitely deserved the spot.
One must remember Smash isn’t just about characters which have been in the video game industry long enough, but also characters that have been relevant and games that have been huge recently.
Also, she’s not 3rd party. More like 2nd party; because Bayo2 is exclusive to the WiiU.
Exactly – she’s in the roster with characters that have greatly influenced + been huge icons of the video game world for 20-30 years now. I just don’t believe she’s anywhere close to being up there with them.
In my view, it would have been a better choice if she was a character that could match up to them, because we’re talking about SSB, the fighting game featuring some of the most iconic characters from the entire video game industry. I think it’s alright for Nintendo to go a bit more easy in relation to selection of their own characters, as long as their biggest mascots are already in, but 3rd-party characters should be chosen with absolute care, imo. I guess I just don’t think she’s relevant enough (don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying she’s not relevant at all) in comparison to the rest of 3rd-party characters that have been previously chosen. But that’s just me, of course. Sakurai and Nintendo obviously thought otherwise, and that’s what should matter to people at the end of the day.
I don’t necessarily think it was a bad decision, or that she shouldn’t be in there; I’m just expressing my personal view on her inclusion, and comparing her “status” to the other fighters that have been in the game. Personally, I think there were a couple better options, but if Sakurai thinks she’s the best choice, then sure, it’s not like I’m going to stop him or anything, hah.
And no, Bayonetta is not 2nd-party. Bayonetta belongs to Platinum Games, a 3rd-party developer that brings/brought games to other platforms as well, including Bayonetta 1. That’s like saying Lara Croft is 2nd-party to Microsoft because the latest Tomb Raider game is exclusive to the XB1.
All regardless from me having doubts about “2nd-party” even being a factually correct term.
To be fair to Bayonetta, she’s as new as Pac-Man is old. Pac-Man got in mainly due to Namco’s colaboration and the original arcade game. Were it not for the original game, he would have banished to the realm of forgotten mascots.
My point being, Pac-Man had a huge influential game ages ago and nothing of decent quality ever since. Bayonetta didn’t have any games during that period of time (or 90s), but both her games are masterpieces of the beat ’em up (and action in general) genre. It evens out.

Not because she’s from an M rated game but because of her attitude, the way she carries herself, etc. Such a sexualized character in Smash is both shocking & exciting. So… how much did he censor her? There is censoring. They’d have to.
First, her summoning magic doesn’t leave her naked, they keep her pretty well covered.
Second, her tag line, “Don’t fuck with a witch.” Has been censored to “Don’t mess with a witch.”
Both are fine as Smash is not a mature game, but make no mistake, she was censored. ;)
Sakurai clearly hasn’t played the damn game. Someone should have told him she could have said “Don’t flock with a witch.” since that’s what she’ll sometimes say instead of fuck. It would have been more true to her character. As for her not ending up naked, she still could have ended up naked but just been more covered up by her hair. It’s a game rated T for Teen, for fuck’s sake! It should be able to get away with that.
This is just another case where the ESRB should be scrapped & they should just use Hollywood movie ratings for video games. T for Teen should be the same as PG-13, for example.

They’re fundamentally different.
The original, while “open” as hell for a Wii title, feels pretty linear and it’s much more story-driven. Compared to it, X gives you much more liberty. While the first one has more of a sci-fantasy vibe, X is more “grounded” in its sci-fi element.
Fundamentally speaking, XC resembles a classical JRPG experience more than XCX, which opts for a more WRPG design philosphy.
It is better, not to take away from the originsl’s being outstanding…but X is on a whole other level.

Sakurai said himself that he want to add one the new fire emblem characters from fates during the direct, and cloud was added in post development. Neither of them were from the vote. Bayo was from the vote. So there are still #2&3 to be announce in future directs, there just would not be solo smash directs anymore.

I was thinking to myself, why isn’t Bayonetta in smash bros as we do have her latest game and now I read this article and wow she is in the game this is amazing, I can say this she will fight good as zero suit samus, Bayonetta 2 had some neat special moves and combos these can be used with her powers, so Bayonetta is the last character excellent choice smash bros is the best fighting game having so many characters from different games.
From watching the reactions from people on youtube, I feel like Alpharad and I were the only ones who knew it was Bayonetta as soon as she spoke in her trailer.
