NX: Tezuka Says Nintendo Wants To Create Something “In Sync With The Times”

Bloomberg recently had the opportunity to meet up with Nintendo game designer Takashi Tezuka to talk about Nintendo’s mascot, Mario. Obviously the publication couldn’t help but ask about the company’s forthcoming NX platform. Tezuka wouldn’t say anything, but he did mention that they’re creating something that is in sync with the times. I’m afraid that’s all they managed to get out of him on the subject of NX.

“We feel quite strongly about creating things that are in sync with the times,” he said with a smile, a hand on the plush stuffed Mario doll at his side.

  1. Those five words ” in sync with the times ” has me really anxious as to what the NX is. I’m hoping it’s a powerhouse console that’s super easy to develop for but with smart but very useful innovation or at least that’s what I’m hoping Tezuka-san is insinuating

    1. Well, with the recent patent talking about a “Supplementary Device” for the a “Console” I think that the NX could likely end up being the most innovate console to date compared to the rapidly aging PS4 and Xbox One.

      I’m not tech wizard but I think Nintendo are finally realizing that devs and consumers want powerful hardware but they won’t shy away from a new separate controller with unique features (example, Nintendo Wii U gamepad).

    2. You can’t have easy to develop for and Nintendo quality together. It’s one or the other. Not that Wii U is hard to work on its just different.

        1. If they just pushed harder on graphics with the Wii had clickable sticks and actual trigger they could have done a lot of great things.Imagine what Xenoblade and Metroid what have looked liked. We most definitely would have gotten a new Fzero and Star Fox sooner. Kid Icarus would have been great on the tv with the point controls.

    3. Nope won’t work. Nintendo could use alien technology from 1000 years in the future. The devs who want “more power” use it for higher resolution and draw distance and textures and so forth which means they increase development costs meaning they need to sell even more to make their money back. There is still a critical flaw though. Their games (3rd party games) don’t sell on Nintendo consoles. They won’t waste their time making a good hell a decent port on NX cause it won’t sell well and won’t make their money back. They know their fanbases are on PS or Xbox also PC even. So even if Nintendo has a clone of the PS4/Xbox One they still will ignore it since they know they won’t make enough profit to make it worth it. Plus they won’t give DLC still. 3rd party will never come back to Nintendo. Not fully. Maybe a ransom 3rd party game here or there but never full 3rd party support. It’s not Nintendo who needs to catch up its 3rd party devs who need to pull back and not go with big budget games anymore. 3rd party likes to copy and paste so Nintendo has to copy and paste a console with PS4 or Xbox One to even be noticed or acknowledged by 3rd party devs lol. Which that us not Nintendo’s style.

      1. Nintendo has openly said that it’s becoming harder for them to put out games at a timely manner so yes, they need to try every trick in the book to court as much 3rd party support as they can. I know there’s indie support for Nintendo platforms but not everyone is really into those types of games because they’re not full fledge gaming experiences unless their immensely funded by big publishers. The reason that a lot of 3rd party multiplats didn’t sell well on the Wii U was mainly due to poor marketing and advertisement (by both Nintendo and 3rd parties), stealth releases, gimped features and lazily developed and poorly optimized games. A lot of gamers aren’t you, some people just don’t want a Nintendo only games system and if this is what Nintendo is planning with the NX they should just go ahead and make it a streaming service app or something rather than a console because it will be in the same situation as the Wii U is in now and probably lose a lot of money if they decide to go with some crazy expensive gimmick that doesn’t work. I’m not saying Nintendo should copy and paste Sony and Microsoft as far as consoles go, but they should definitely get with the times and just offer a straight forward gaming system or gaming platforms which offers smart but very useful innovation. I don’t wanna see the NX go through the many droughts that the Wii U went through because that severely hurt that system and if that happens again it may be the beginning of the end for Nintendo (as far as home consoles go)

        1. “because they’re not full fledge gaming experiences unless their immensely funded by big publishers”
          I can’t even begin to type how much I disagree with this sentiment.
          Either you have a very different concept than me of what constitutes a ‘full-fledged gaming experience’ or you wanted to say something different than what you actually said.

          1. What I mean is that indie games usually does not have as much content, features or a bigger scale than a bigger budget physical/digital game which is why their far cheaper to make. I’ll give you an example, Freedom Planet…….although a very good indie game, it’s not nearly a full fledge gaming experience as Bayonetta 2 is. Can you get a good ” full gaming experience ” from indie games? Sure you can but you can you get that ” full fledged gaming experience ” with all of the bells and whistles (content and features) as you would from a big budget title that would cost $60? I don’t think you could unless a big time publisher came along and heavily funded it. I hope that clears up what I was trying to stress

            1. I think you should put special emphasis on that ‘usually’. Especially when the products you’re comparing are not priced similarly at all.

              And as I thought, the thing is that we disagree on what constitutes a ‘full-fledged gaming experience’. Personally, if developers are going to bloat the game by adding unnecessary content, I’d rather have it gone and discounted from the price (collectathons and tacked multiplayer modes come to mind).

              My point being, most triple A ‘features’ are just ways to artificially lengthening the game. Batman’s challenges, Bioshock’s multiplayer or even Bayonetta’s half-assed multiplayer come to mind. If it’s not worth having, cut it.

              1. I don’t get the Indie not full fledged gaming experience. Indies are just small budget developers. AAA gaming seem to lack content and features with the budgets they have. A 15 dollar game like a Fast Racing Neo gives just as good a gaming experience. Mighty No 9, Shovel Knight, and others are the B tier games. They are the reason there are more games on the market. These big publishers only publish a few games out of the year. Every game cannot and should not be AAA. Indies seem to get disrespected more than other developers in the gaming industry by the Internet consumers.

                1. Exactly my point. More often than not, the games that truly push boundaries are found in the indie scene, not on the triple A market. They might not lead in profit, awards or whatever, but they surely are on the lead when we talk about originality. Not to mention, they are helping to keep a lot of genres alive (who does shmups anymore?)

        2. “…they need to try every trick in the book to court as much 3rd party support as they can.”

          & I think Nintendo should fund 3rd-party exclusives, much like they did w/ Bayonetta 2.

          From Ubisoft alone: Red Steel 3, Prince of Persia (3D Platformer for Wii U & 2D Platformer for 3DS), Buck Bumble, a 3D Rayman…

          Tenchu, something from SUDA51, Chrystal Chronicles, classic Tomb Raider, classic Resident Evil & Silent Hill, 3D Klonoa, Ridge Racer, Shinobi, Brave Fencer Musashi, a console The World Ends w/ You, Trauma Center, Jet Grind Radio, Crazy Taxi…

          & Nintendo should buy &/or establish other studios, particularly w/ the Western flavor.

          Nintendo would fill their library w/ complimenting, familiar 3rd-party franchises & cater to veteran gamers. Also, the boost in exclusives would further bolster Nintendo’s atmosphere, justifying an alternative in the industry, instead of the more universal-style approach w/ hardware (nearly identical to DVD players & the like that mostly play the same offerings despite the different brands).

          Plus, w/ only 1 platform to worry about, those games would be optimized & could more easily take advantage of any hardware quirks.

          That said, a lot of 3rd-party offerings on Wii U were simply unappealing to me, regardless of their technical shortcomings.

    4. There is a problem, that line isn’t about the NX, it was about IPs like Mario.
      The only time NX was mentioned in the interview, was when it said he wouldn’t talk about it.

    1. Well if they decide that the cartridge is SD card format, then it does because it means that the games will load faster compared to a disc, and can hold more data than a disc.

      1. Jaded Ridley X3 {I'm not whining, you suckers... *cough* ..poor souls! I've just been driven insane by Nintendo failing me one too many times this gen!}

        I love how cartridge based storage is making a comeback. So much for disc based storage being the “be all, end all” of data storage.

      1. Yeah a console that has some of the same issues as the wii u but is still getting support with new AAA games from 3rd party developers anything else to say retarded child

          1. What are you talking about and I am not Eminem123 people need to stop assuming that I am another person when I’m not and that is all and if you have nothing to say on the topic matter then leave me alone

              1. No I don’t if you don’t know the difference between him and me then you are stupid he bashed any and everyone and if you didn’t want to fully read his comments then you wouldn’t understand what he was saying through all of the bashing but I did and I agree with the majority if not all of what he said Nintendo needs to improve on etc etc and yes I also have a vita lol there are 10 or 11 million vita owners or more and since this is a gaming website I talk about the games I want and have and OK it is numbers at the end of a name once again you have no evidence whatsoever just like ridley so once again child leave me along if you have nothing to say about the article

          2. Jaded Ridley X3 {I'm not whining, you suckers... *cough* ..poor souls! I've just been driven insane by Nintendo failing me one too many times this gen!}

            I know, right!? He’s been slowly easing back into his usual self. The “retarded” part is yet another red flag just recently sent up. Then there is the defeatist mentality he has with “why bother trying to change Nintendo when you know they won’t listen.” No punctuation. Give it time & he’ll be using numbers & then using the numbers to list his comments. JTZ is also pretty easy to spot.

  3. Uh-oh. Hopefully, NX will be able to resurrect gaming fundamentals (& the Japanese touch) while staving off the obsession for hardcore audiovisuals & photorealism, as well as the tendencies to ape Hollywood (pretentious characters & plots, the obsession w/ blockbusters, massive budgets, bloated teams, etc.).

    But if last gen & this gen are any indication, it’s safe to presume that true console-gaming has been irreversably damaged–hijacked by uncouth consumers, CEOs & shareholders–& will soon be destroyed. Shot & beaten to Hel, juked in the throat & kicked in the ball, overwhelmed by only a few tastes. Unless indies up their game, the genres, aesthetics, & variety that culminated in the 6th gen will be lost, forgotten, drowned in a shallow sea of shiny mediocrity & interactive movies.

    Will we ever see another Gamecube, PS2, or Dreamcast? Another Arcade Racer? Another 1-on-1 Fighter rich in offline unlockables? Another gonzo Shooter? Another Turn-Based Strategy RPG? Another whimsical but deep Adventure? Another solid AA? Another optimized exclusive? “It’s true what they say: the grass is always greener, & you don’t really know what it is you have until it’s gone…gone…gone.”

    1. This reeks of nostalgia googles, to be honest.

      Of all the things you’ve mentioned, I’d say that only TRPGs are dead as a genre (there might be a couple on the Vita, I’m not that sure). The rest have either never died or making a comeback.

      This romantic memory of the 6th gen needs to end. A couple of genres fade into obscurity each generation, it’s really not that big of a deal. 6th gen effectively killed 3D platforming by reeasing mindless SM64 clones, for example. Same as with every other gen.

      We’ve never produced so much games at any point in time, ever. Furthermore, we’ve never produced so many experimental games, hybridized so many genres, explored so many art styles at once. Sure, the output might seem limited when you just look at the AAA giants, but hey, they are the giants. They have to play it safe, or they’ll crumble. Innovation comes from the smaller teams: the indies and the recently resurfaced AA studios. At this point in videogame history, we’re standing on the shoulders of giants, and that’s a marvelous thing. A Turkish guy might stuble upon The Guardian Legend, a game that was all but forgotten until retrogaming brought it back from the dead, and make a fantastic game inspired by it, all by himself. That kind of thing could never happen during the 6th gen. The closest thing that comes to mind is Cave Story, and that game was a miracle (and arguably know not only because of its quality, but because it was pretty anomalous). Doujin soft has always existed, and the fact that it has become an industry by itself is fantastic

      So no, 6th gen was not that great. It wasn’t even that varied at all, 3rd and 4th were much more willing to experiment and take risks.

      Then again, you said ‘console’ gaming, so make of this what you will.

      1. Perhaps I’m looking @ the industry w/ nostalgia goggles, but I still see the advancements. It’s just, many of those advancements seem underutilized. To me, the progression of games took a sharp turn after the 6th gen into almost unrecognizable territory. Hel, even during 6th gen, where franchises like Tomb Raider & Resident Evil lost much of what defined them.

        Perhaps I’m looking in the wrong places, but it’s increasingly harder for me to find the games I want. Part of that has to do w/ my affinity to the Japanese-style & the decline of said style. In the 8th gen, I feel lost, & in some ways, like a pilgrim in an unholy land.

        Sure, I can let go of franchises, & embrace hybrid-genres (I’ve done that). & I’m not just glorifying the 6th gen per se, but also all that came before. To me, the advancements in tech were used to complimented the past, all the while coexisting w/ the new.

        But to go w/ out the genres that spoke to me? Granted, 2D Platformers were in short supply for 6th gen, but it seems only the Wii actually embraced them in 7th gen (particularly New SMB [love it or hate it] & DKC Returns; though there were multiplats like Rayman origins & Muramasa).

        & to see how advancements in tech are used & watch how it offers little (to me) but destroys a lot? Tomb Raider & Resident Evil are now firmly in the Shooter genre, & their stories are starting to overshadow their gameplay. & if Assassin’s Creed is supposed to be the new Prince of Persia, then 1 of my favorite franchises has been maimed beyond recognition. PoP vs. Assassin’s Creed is prolly the best example that sums up what I see after the 6th gen & how I feel about what has succeeded it. I miss PoP’s focused gameplay, puzzles, purposeful acrobatics, methodical boss battles, story as a framing device, more abstract aesthetics, AA sensibilities, etc. As for the story element, there are a few exception (e.g. JRPGs).

        Speaking of RPGs, I much prefer deep turn-based combat rather than real-time (a Tales-esque system or XC being the exceptions). Yet real-time seems all the rage now, so much so that ‘RPG’ might be more of a marketing term for games that only have some RPG elements. But IMO, w/ out menus &/or more precise actions, or even a party of some sort, it’s hard to classify many of what’s currently considered an RPG as an actual RPG. When do the lines begin to blur? How many elements change before something becomes something else entirely?

        I feel like the landscape changed from an idyllic forest to a desert. I’m unable to like something simply because it’s new or even advanced; so maybe these past few gens have degraded what came before, whether I’m wearing my nostalgia goggles or not. Although, I might never be able to remove them completely: my gaming life (oxymoron?) has been steeped in certain fundamentals, particularly the Japanese way, even Western devs followed in their footsteps. I never stopped liking that, but it’s clear to me there’s been a massive schism that might’ve begun in 6th gen but was really manifest in 7th gen. For all the classic-style games Wii hosted & the enhancements Wii brought to them, those games were largely ignored. Then, when Wii U arrived, those games were only a trickle. Even the best version of Rodea is the Wii version. & a 3D Action-Adventure Platformer like Legend of Kay goes back to the 6th gen; while decent, is almost a blessing nowadays.

        Devil’s 3rd seems to follow the Japanese knack for gonzo, but it was in development Hel, rushed to market, & still saw a limited release 😠. Luckily there’s…damn, no other equivalent. SUDA51 where are you?

        But Zelda U looks to be utilizing a current gen console & yet is going back to its roots. & Yooka-Laylee, while perhaps nothing more than an updated nostalgia title, is to me the kind of 3D Platformer I still look for, a genre still @ the top of my list (& I’m not even a huge fan of 3D Mario). I also still look for 2D platformers like Bloodstained. Yeah, I can still find what I want, but my libraries have dwindled for lack of choice. Can’t really say Tomb Raider or Resident Evil or most any established franchise has maintained there essences during their changes (more like superficial elements).

        Genres could coexist if 3rd parties would dial back the obsessions I listed in my previous post. The 6th gen was imperfect, glaringly absent: 2D Platformers & 2D RPGs. But I think the 7th gen was a mass extinction: franchises that did survive abruptly mutated rather than evolved; & games that perservered starved to death.

        It’s also been a while since I found a 3DS game. I’m anticipating Fire Emblem Fates & Bravely 2nd. But even indie titles there have lost their appeal. Dunno, maybe I’ve just been gaming too long & need a sabbatical from gaming.

        Sorry if I rambled.

  4. Call of Nintendo: Modern Wariofare, League of Lenny Koopas, Bowserfield, Need for Shyguy, Grand Theft Antasma, Just Koopa, Dry-Bones Ex: Bob-omb revolution, World of Whompcraft……The future is coming.

  5. 💃I'm a Boss Ass Bitch💯

    No wonder. I’ve been missing all of this fucking delicious news because somehow I wasn’t following my nintendo news. Like what the fuck yo?

  6. This could go either way…
    Either Nintendo wants to create a device that similar to the ps4 and xbox, which would be great, or they want to be in symc with the casuals and go for the smart phone gaming style. I’m really hoping, and pretty sure, they mean the former, but Nintendo is known for having tricks up their sleeves – both good and bad.

  7. That doesn’t sound like Nintendo…and frankly has me concerned. Other then having fucking party chat I don’t want this to mean it’s just another PS4/Xbox where it’s just a graphics box.

  8. Jaded Ridley X3 {I'm not whining, you suckers... *cough* ..poor souls! I've just been driven insane by Nintendo failing me one too many times this gen!}

    This better mean everything Sony & Microsoft are doing but better. Don’t let some of us down, Nintendo. We’ve had enough of being let down this gen.

      1. Jaded Ridley X3 {I'm not whining, you suckers... *cough* ..poor souls! I've just been driven insane by Nintendo failing me one too many times this gen!}

        LMFAO You’re funny. How about you make me, bitch!? Fix your caps lock, bro. I think it’s broken. Or it’s just being retarded… like most of your comments.

          1. Jaded Ridley X3 {I'm not whining, you suckers... *cough* ..poor souls! I've just been driven insane by Nintendo failing me one too many times this gen!}

            Sad but true. Also what my fellow Jaded said.

  9. I just remember of it:

    “So, we pride ourselves on being a mass market games company. So, we absolutely want more active players. We want more casual players. And we believe that with the 29 games we’ll have available at launch, additional games available digital only, the range of services like Nintendo TVii, like Wii U Chat, a robust eShop — we think we’ve got the offering to attract a very wide audience.

    You mentioned that maybe consumers are doing different things right now, what we find is that in the end, consumers are looking for new and compelling experiences. And we believe we’re delivering a vast array of new and compelling experiences with Wii U.

    We’re looking to appeal to this very broad audience. We’re looking to do that three ways. We’re looking to do that with games. We’re looking to do that with our connected social community. And we’re looking to do that through the innovations we’re bringing to the broader video entertainment space.”

    –x–

    Every generation we get the same promises and the same blah-blah-blah.

    1. Jaded Ridley X3 {I'm not whining, you suckers... *cough* ..poor souls! I've just been driven insane by Nintendo failing me one too many times this gen!}

      Social community?

      1. LOL!

        Call Miiverse a “community” is the same as calling eShop a “robust” service.

        I just can’t number the lies Reggie said in this interview.

        1. Miiverse almost was a community, until they kept cutting it apart like they did Swapnote /letterbox. They are to fucking scared to let us keep a real community. And when they give it to us, they promptly take it away. :/

          1. And, surprinsingly, their 1st mobile “game” will be actually a tool for forever alone people… I really can’t get it.

            1. If they are consistent, they will start cancelling features on their mobile app also. The first time it’s abused, it will get axed, assuming it has any real functionality to begin with.

              1. “assuming it has any real functionality to begin with”

                LOL! Pretty much!

                Nintendo has been getting pretty good on the “promise, but not deliver” situation.

                Not that I care about Miitomo, but still.

  10. That’s a good sign. Nintendo needs a powerful system that stands caught up if not ahead of the gaming times.
