Sakurai Thought Cloud Was Best Choice For Final Fantasy Representation

Super Smash Bros creator Masahiro Sakurai has revealed in the latest edition of Famitsu that he though Cloud was the most obvious choice for Final Fantasy representation in Super Smash Bros on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. He thought about other characters in the long-running RPG series but concluded that Cloud would be the best man for the job.

Nomura: When we first talked, I asked “are you sure you’re okay with Cloud?” He’s not a character from a new game, after all.

Sakurai: But on the other hand, if you think about who to add from Final Fantasy, it’s hard to come up with a choice that’s not Cloud. We could have used Terra or Bartz, protagonists in their own right, but I feel like there would be some people who wouldn’t know who those characters are.

      1. I agree, he was definitely an out of place choice, but a good one nonetheless. He’s definitely the flagship character for many people when Final Fantasy comes to mind, so he was a good choice for representing Final Fantasy as a whole within Smash, even if he may not entirely fit in the Smash puzzle.

    1. Lightning is pretty much terrible in all the FF13 games, with the sole exception of Lightning Returns. I do love her in Lightning Returns but it isn’t a proper sequel to to XIII-2.

  1. Well, he has a point in my case. I do recognize Cloud, however, the other two he named? I couldn’t pick em from a line up. xD

    1. its his game, well 50% his and he has every right to do what he wants. if a game dev wants a cast of nothing but females in skimpy outfits then they should allowed to, if people dont like it then they should avoid, as long as its a good game i dont care if what they add and if it includes one or more ‘garbage’ characters then so be it, just as long as the character isnt too garbage.

  2. If that’s the case, then how come his presentation was terrible? His color palette was terrible and he only has 2 music. Steve Burton was even waiting to hear from one of them to voice Cloud again, but received no word. I’m excited he was in, but if they weren’t going to put much effort into him, they might’ve used Terra or Bartz. Better yet, knowing Enix and their undying love for Lightning and shoving her into everyone’s throat, I bet they would’ve put more effort into her when putting her in Smash.

Wait!? Steve Burton isn’t voicing Cloud for Smash!?

But some dubs are way better than some of the Japanese voice actors. Like Inuyasha. Oh my god! The Japanese voice for Inuyasha is annoying as fuck to hear when he starts screaming. Then there is Bleach. Sorry but I’ll take the 2nd person to play a Black Power Ranger, the great Johnny Yong Bosch, over any Japanese voice actor any day. Not to mention DBZ’s dubbing is pretty good, too. Especially now with DBZ Kai out fixing some of the child friendly dubbing of the original DBZ anime.

    2. I think it was because of time constraints. Sakurai had a limited time for the DLC and the people that were asking for characters were getting impatient, so he had to “rush” Cloud (No running animation, only japanese voice actor, 2 songs etc.). Still, one of the best rushes I’ve ever seen in gaming, he still had a lot of love and care put into him.

As much as some people hate the fact it was Cloud, they should just be glad it wasn’t Lightning of all people. lol

  4. This is the final nail in the coffin for anyone wanting Black Mage or Terra. Cloud is Sakurai’s choice and he’s here to stay.

  5. I barely know cloud lol. I only know about him cause I have the FF movie Advent Children or whatever it’s called lol.

  6. I agree that Cloud was a solid choice, but I do question his reasoning. After all, Smash Bros has a history of introducing characters most of us had never even heard of. Captain Falcon? Possibly Ness? Marth & Roy? These are characters players may have not recognized that became household names because they were in Smash. In the case of Marth & Roy, the Western fanbase for Fire Emblem grew exponentially once those two were in Smash. I’m sure a character from IV or VI would’ve gained immense notoriety by being in Smash.

Again, though, I’m happy we have Cloud.

    1. i think part of why cloud is in smash is because ff 7 was originally going to be on the n64 but because nintendo made a bad call on the media they chose, the cartridge which has 64mb, square soft, as it was known then, looked at the ps one and went with them. its basically saying cloud is in smash because ff7 was almost on a nintendo console.

  7. I still think Cloud is a really dumb character to include in Smash. The original FF7 wasn’t released on Nintendo and the remake isn’t slated to be released on Nintendo consoles either (unless an NX version is planned to be announced, which I doubt but it is possible). The only time Cloud has featured on Nintendo systems, aside from Smash, is in Theatrhythm, which really doesn’t count. There ARE FF games on Nintendo so I don’t understand why they didn’t go with one of those characters. It’s not a first-party character like Sony’s Nathan Drake from Uncharted, so it’s not like Sony owned Cloud but he still screams PlayStation to me. Definitely think they could’ve thought of a better character choice.

  8. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

    >>>Or how about a Nintendo character instead that makes more sense than any of these Third Class ones>>>

    1. Don´t get me wrong, Bayonetta seems interesting, but the other character should have been the next closest-placing Nintendo character, be it K. Rool, Ridley, Fiora, hell even Dr. Crygor from WarioWare if he somehow got votes. Who even knew Corrin’s English name before his/her reveal?

      1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

        >>>Well at least Bayonetta adds new fighting mechanics, Cloud is basically a Marth/Ike Hybrid>>>

          1. Depends on the character, I guess. Celes, Locke, Sabin and Cyan are the better rounded characters overall, with Terra and Edgar following them on the list. Shadow, while a very cool character, has the same depth as Umaro, Gogo or Mog. The background of other characters, like Setzer, felt a bit too rushed for my taste.

It’s only natural, though. FFVI has an incredibly large and diverse cast, you just can’t give every character the same degree of depth. That’s why I prefer how other titles feature a large cast of characters but end up focusing their depth on a smaller group. FFIV in particular is very good at this, especially in the way in which it introduces throwaway characters in its first act (until Mt. Ordeals) as tools to further develop Cecil’s personality, even if it doesn’t grant the character an enormous amount of depth.

    1. And you call yourself THE collector????? I don’t say like the games but at least you could have played a bit of any of this series with a name like yours. Unless I missed understand which means you tried at least once and did not like it. However your comment implies you did not even give a go.

If you ever play a final fantasy game my advice will be to play Final fatasy 1, 4,5,6,7,9. As for final fantasy 10 and 10-2 yeah but not as fan as the other. And not let forget Final fantasy tactics (PSP version) and Final Fantasy dissidia (more a fighting game) .

If you like MMO final Fantasy 11 and 14 are ok from my little experience.

If you wondering for final fantasy 2,3,8 and13 (part 1,2 and 3) don’t bother.

For the Fire emblem I love the version of the SNES and Game boy advance.

    2. Good time to start now as any. FF7 remake announcement finally put me over the edge to go and play FF7. Also playing GBA Fire Emblems, having finished theprequel second game on there, but for different reasons.

  10. Sakurai is correct on this and everyone should agree. I think FF7 is the bestselling FF ever, and FF7 pretty much brought Nintendo FF fans to Playstation and those who were new to gaming that wanted to try the Playstation casually, over the more mature lineup of games on there. FF7 is the starting point for FF’s time on Playstation to this date.

I’m still pissed we didn’t get a Sephiroth, Tifa, & Barrett or Vincent costumes for Mii Swordfighter, Brawler, & Gunner respectively since we got Cloud as a playable character. What a missed opportunity, really.
