      1. Look at Boo Camp, Ghostly Gold and Museum Melee. Those three levels are purely grind.

        To be fair, DLC is completely optional. You still have the option of playing through the game normally as developers and game designers have originally intended. But if you want to ‘cheat’ your way through, so to speak, the DLC is there.

        Other JRPGs do this too, with FE:Awakening and Shin Megami Tensei IV coming to mind.

      1. Thats not necessarily good.

        I mean take mario kart 8 for example, 15$ for 50% more content, while here you pay a premium for single maps that are probably not made for amazing replay value.

        At least in AW you dont have a blast replaying the same map over and over.

                  1. No, the story would probably just lvl up the ones you regularly use. However, just doing skirmishes (which you can now summon, on what level you’d like), you can easily lvl up the rest. Also, the arena doesn’t give you exp, it’s for getting items.

                    1. Apparently I can’t reply to your next comment. But yeah, pretty much. There’s a small difference, but few are going to feel the need to level up many more than the regulars anyway. Either way, it’s far way from the paytoplay nonsense.

                    2. Me neither, so I’ll reply here too.
                      Between the low level cap and the improved multiplayer, you’ll want to train every unit, maybe even minmax the stats of the ones you pick as your endgame team (which could or could not include your regulars).
                      Besides, pay to play is no the same as pay to win.

  1. This is prior to release right? HAHAHA. That’s messed up. It’d be nice to know how much it takes to fully enjoy this title with the 3 way split on story, and now DLC prior to release.

    I just got the most recent release of this title and apparently it’ll be my last.

  2. I don’t see what everybody’s problem is :P The games have complete story and tons of content for each arch, easily a 100 hours for each with 1-2 playthroughs. If you don’t like the price of the DLC, don’t buy it, it’s not necessary to fully enjoy the game. Besides, what you can do with gold and grinding is also very limited in fates, since you can’t max out or go unlimited like awakening, you can only get 40 lvl’s per unit.

    1. “tons of content”
      Bullshit. No matter with what you compare it, the amount of content is mediocre all around. Counting the three games together, the content amounts to 120 maps (assuming the third route has the same number of maps), 70 characters (not counting future DLC ones a la Awakening), and all for 80$.

      For reference, the last DS entry had 77 playable characters and 42 maps, with different objectives and different routing withing the same game, at regular retail price. That’s only one game running on much less powerful hardware. It’s even more insulting if you compare it with other games, too. Your average TRPG counts its missions by the hundreds, and your average monster-catching clone has at the very least a hundred of units to your disposal. In sheer numbers, Fire Emblem loses embarrassingly. Most of the content that fills your gameplay hours is text narration, not actual combat.

      1. Are you kidding me? Shadow Dragon is known for having shallow and useless characters, tons of them. In Fates you have hundreds of support conversations instead of having too many characters. Quality over quantity. The same applies for maps, they’re beautiful to look at, and really different. They also have new mechanics like the dragon vein. Oh, and mycastle, which is a LOT of new content. Not counting the whole skinship controversy, you now have the arena, the cafe, the ability to build your own base and actually use it for defensive missions in the story OR with your friends, etc. Yes, the multiplayer, and its a lot better than on DS. You also have a wide array of new weapons and classes. This is not counting all the enhancements they’ve made to the overrall gameplay. It’s certainly not mediocre.

          1. Oh, I thought we were making it relevat to people outside of Japan, since they won’t have played that entry. Anyways, the same pretty much goes for both, so it doesn’t matter. If you think it still pales then I guess you just don’t like the new stuff, or Awakening. Meh, I wish they could’ve distributed it in a better way at least.

            1. I thought we were making it relevant for longtime fans of the series. The people who actually care about this stuff, you know?

              And no, it doesn’t go for both. The sequel is a massive improvement not only in gameplay (maps are less open, forcing you to pick your battles and strategies better), but in unit distribution and design (redistributed stats of those useless characters from SD). The level design of the maps is also much more complex, and you can actually get every unit by the end of the game. To compare it with SD is an insult of the highest caliber, you’re saying that one of the best games in the series is the same as the indisputable worst entry.

              “If you think it still pales then I guess you just don’t like the new stuff, or Awakening”
              Shall I get into these “gameplay improvements” you mention? The pairing-up bonuses are way too overpowered, the removal of durability was completely unnecessary, free re-classing was broken too (although it does sound better in this entry) and chapters have less variety of objectives. It’s fine if you like ‘the new stuff’, really, but don’t insult my intelligence by telling me that the gameplay has improved, because I’m not that gullible.

              1. No, I was going for the majority of people who buy it, which will definitely not have played that. You’re saying all the stuff about maps, but you’re still not arguing for character development or the unecessary mass of them. Yes, the maps are more “complex”, but how? I told you how Fates has the dragon vein, changing things up a lot. And mycaslte ads a whole new dimension by allowed you to fight on maps you make yourself. The pair-ups was fixed in Fates so you can’t defend and dual-attack at the same time. You have to pair up for defending or just stand next to each other for dual attacks. Meaning it’s not overpowered at all. Oh, and the enemy dual-attacking is whole new difficulty. The removal of durability allows for different gameplay which is nice, because it removes that need to grind gold. Reclassing is not broken as it now goes from the same lvl. For example, relcassing from lvl 6 means you’re still on lvl 6. You don’t grow more powerful from it, just different class. Basically, Fates is a LOT more like old school FE than Awakening. Isn’t that improvement to you? I don’t think you’re gullible, I was just telling you my opinion….If you think the gameplay is worse, sure, but it seems that you’d learn more by playing it. But from what I can tell, you won’t.

                1. If you buy SRPGs for character development, that’s fine. I don’t think it’s one of the main characteristics of the genre, but whatever. I’m judging the games based on its design qualities. Honestly, you don’t want to bring the writing to the table when talking about Awakening in particular, considering it’s an archetype festival. Didn’t IS admit that it was below their own standard?

                  “Yes, the maps are more “complex”, but how?”
                  Like this. You might remember this from SD, it’s the map where you have to escape from Gharnef. Notice how much breathing room it gives you to compensate for the lack of mobility in the sand:
                  http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/fireemblem/images/d/d1/FE12_Chapter_9.png
                  Compare it with this: http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/fireemblem/images/9/9e/FE13_Chapter_9.jpg

                  Speaking of narrow, FE12 also has one of the few examples of a death corridor map done right. It’s harder in the remake too, since there are more units on the village, not only up north: http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/fireemblem/images/a/ab/FE3_Chapter_19_Map.png

                  Even the fortress maps allow you to branch out your units to proceed however you want, allowing for defensive play using terrain (the bushy area on the NW), choke points (the gates immediately south) or to flee using the path to the right: http://www.fireemblemwod.com/fe12/guia/mapa17.jpg

                  Awakening’s maps lacked this kind of approach, and from what I’ve seen, Fates’ maps look more similar to those in the previous game.

                  “The pair-ups was fixed in Fates so you can’t defend and dual-attack at the same time.”
                  Well, thank fucking god for that. I’d rather see it gone, so it can’t be abused by the enemy too.

                  “The removal of durability allows for different gameplay which is nice, because it removes that need to grind gold”
                  You shouldn’t even be allowed to grind gold in the first place, older FE titles made sure you never ran out. By adding durability you just erase resource-management completely.

                  “Reclassing is not broken as it now goes from the same lvl”
                  I know, that’s why I corrected myself in the previous post.

                  “Basically, Fates is a LOT more like old school FE than Awakening. Isn’t that improvement to you?”
                  Nowhere near close yet. It still resembles Awakening much more, I don’t think that’s up for debate. It’s an improvement, yeah, but it’s not enough. Besides, never said I won’t play it. I’m not going to pay for it, though.

          1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

            >>>Although I’m obviously against almost all launch DLC besides useless things like outfits, Awakening is a quality game so even if it’s shorter, it’s still worth the price>>>

            1. Disagree. Awakening’s pros were its great production values, varied cast and more accessible modes. The cons were dumbed-down gameplay, lack of content compared with other games in the series (it’s not Sacred Stones, but it’s almost there) and broken mechanics. I’d say the cons weight much more than the pros, especially if you’re a big fan of the series.

                  1. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

                    >>>I see, well I didn’t notice much because you don’t get much opportunities to do much anyway but I’ll take your word for it>>>

  3. So glad I canceled my pre order of this crap! This game seems alright, but the handling of the distribution of this game is the worse! I spent more time looking to see how to get the complete experience of this game, come to find out you need the amiibos, codes that come with some cards(japan only), dlc packs, and three different purchases just to do so! For this game to try and do well in the west, the devs sure as hell is doing their best to discourage potential new fans from buying the FE series! I was willing to buy the collectors edition, with the dlc pack, but they aren’t even making enough of those, and I despise digital distribution!
    Come to find out the codes that came with the japanese version of the cards, to get the damn extra characters, may not even come to the west! to hell with this series and the devs, it’s more trouble buying this game than it’s worth!
    They aren’t gonna even consider selling the the third story as a physical copy, and this has given me another reason to push nintendo products away!

    1. I agree with the distribution, they haven’t even announced it for Europe. However, the amiibos are just small bonuses, and I haven’t even heard mention of the cards. What I did for now; bought one route and enjoyed the hell out of it. It’s definitely worth playing, but you don’t need all of it.

      1. Too late, I spent my money on something better “Nights Of Azure Limited Edition”, and I have no regrets passing Fire Emblem up! Heck I’m gonna forget about fire emblem once Gravity Rush Remaster is released in a few days, and that will hold me over until Nights Of Azure Limited Edition is released, after that it’s straight onto Odin Sphere remake, which has more content than it’s ps2 counterpart, and I loved the ps2 version!
        How they distributed FE Fates in the west has convinced me to stay away from these devs! I just wanted to buy a complete physical version of this game, but I can’t even do that without scalpers on ebay screwing everything up, and this is happening too much with nintendo exclusives for me to keep supporting their crap!
        “whew” I feel a little better getting that off my chest! I hope you all enjoy dealing with all of that nonsense with scarce exclusives, because I’m done with it!

  4. Why the hell didn’t they just sell a complete physical version with all three games, on 1-3 cards, and just charge $60-$70 from the start, it’s not like the third path wasn’t already complete!? This game is a total failure out the gate in my opinion!

  5. The money I would have spent on Fire Emblem Fates: Special Edition, if it were still available, was just used to buy the Nights Of Azure Limited Edition on NIS, and not 30 minutes after pre-ordering it I got an email stating that I get free character dlc and a theme with my purchase! The best part about it Nights Of Azure Limited Edition comes with a lot more better stuff, talk about a rebound!

    1. But compared to EA, these games actually have 100+ hours in them….The problem with all this advertising is that they’re shamelessly trying to sell everything, when in reality, one of the games without DLC is an incredible experience on its own. I just wish they’d highlight that instead.

  6. Chains of Lucifer X3 {Free Urselves, Nintendites (fanbitches), from Nintendo's shackles! If U don't, U will fall when they do. All must come to an end as nothing created by humans is 4ever. Ur precious Almighty God Nintendo is not beyond corruption.}

    It doesn’t matter it all of this DLC was cheap or not. This game has fallen off my radar of a game to get. I’m not an idiot. There is probably loads of more stuff in the game being censored by NoA. Their “It’s localization!” lie isn’t working as there are dozens of American games with roughly the same kind of content. Not to mention the dozens of games from Japanese 3rd parties also hitting the west that aren’t getting “localization” changes made to them.

    Intelligent Systems saved Fire Emblem with Awakening but NoA is taking all of that hard work & curb stomping it into the ground with all of the censoring filth disguised as being done in the name of “localization.” Nintendo must purify the NoA infection before it ruins other games. It’s amazing they didn’t neuter Fatal Frame 5 beyond just getting rid of lingerie outfits in the false name of “localization” & replacing them with Zelda & Samus outfits. It should have been both sets of outfits for all regions. Or are we supposed to pretend there aren’t other American based horror movies & games with women in their skivvies or outright naked altogether? Women popping up in a horror setting in lingerie or naked is an American invention! Open your eyes, Nintendites! You have all been lied to & fooled!

    As Zanza would say, let the shackles be released!

    1. Hear you loud and clear. I will not support FE Fates until:

      1. the original support between Corrin and Soleil (he slips her magic powder to help her correct a perceived weakness) is restored, its only change being a near-perfect Japanese-to-English translation.
      2. the petting minigame (or AT LEAST some kind of replacement) is restored, because it is extremely unfair that we get a lesser version content-wise.
      3. NoA gets their hands out of their asses and restock Robin and Lucina in the Americas- I have never not once seen either of those two on store shelves and it has been nearly a year.
      4. Put all three stories on one game card (if I have to download certain packs to help the game along like Xenoblade Chronicles X then so be it) and make it plentiful

      Do these things and my wallet may open up to this game. From what I see here, looks like I am not alone, and perhaps if there are enough of us out there, these things will change.

      As Shulk would say, “The future is OURS to decide!”

    2. Nintendo Tetrarch Quadramus-NX

      >>>Vote me for NOA High Command and I’ll make you all kneel before me for all the things I would do to stop this degeneration of NOA>>>

    1. Chains of Lucifer X3 {Free Urselves, Nintendites (fanbitches), from Nintendo's shackles! If U don't, U will fall when they do. All must come to an end as nothing created by humans is 4ever. Ur precious Almighty God Nintendo is not beyond corruption.}

      And the enslavement continues. Break those shackles Nintendo, especially the Evil Overlords at Nintendo’s corrupted American Sect, has on you, Nintendite! Stop being their fanbitch & be a true loyal consumer! Only you can save yourself from their tyrannical control on you. You are not in love or loyal to Nintendo. You are simply a hostage going through Stockholm Syndrome.

      1. Let’s see here, name calling by using bad play on words, comparing Nintendo to slavery, in Black History Month no less, and saying that my like for Nintendo is just a syndrome.

        This bait sucks.

        1. Chains of Lucifer X3 {Let the shackles be released! Or fall forever!}

          Then why do you agree with a good majority of what they do & spit at anyone that dares to disagree with their bullshit by calling them whiners or crybabies? De Nile is not just a river in Egypt, Nintendite.

            1. |||Nintendo Dark Commander Quadraxis Prime|||

              [[[Nintendite is my creation which means Nintendo Fan in a Metroidnized form]]]

              1. Chains of Lucifer X3 {Let the shackles be released! Or fall forever!}

                Nintendite is my term for fanbitches that defend most of Nintendo’s, specifically NoA’s, decisions. I have no clue what you just said. If it’s roughly the same as my meaning, I will try to infuse it into my definition.

                1. |||Nintendo Dark Commander Quadraxis-NX Prime|||

                  [[[I’ve been saying Nintendites ever since I arrived here and is a Metroid Ing word]]]

                  1. Chains of Lucifer X3 {Let the shackles be released! Or fall forever!}

                    Well it’s being repurposed by me to mean fanbitch since I don’t recall you using Nintendite before. Least not for a very long time, anyway, so I might have forgotten you used the term.

            2. Chains of Lucifer X3 {Let the shackles be released! Or fall forever!}

              De is a play on The. “De Nile is not just a river in Egypt.” is a very clever way of saying you are in denial by using a nice play on words. You are not as smart as you think it would seem. Anyway, I guess you don’t watch any good comedy movies like The New Guy.

              And Nintendite is a word now, silly human slave.

            1. Chains of Lucifer X3 {Let the shackles be released! Or fall forever!}

              Calling people whiners & crybabies because they don’t agree with Nintendo doesn’t sound like an opinion. Sounds more like you are trying to push it off as fact. Typical Nintendite, aka fanbitch, mentality. Nintendo is always right & everyone else is just a self-entitled whining crybaby.

            2. Chains of Lucifer X3 {Let the shackles be released! Or fall forever!}

              Break those chains your Evil Overlords at Nintendo’s American Sect have on you! Only you can save yourself from this kind of enslavement!

        2. Chains of Lucifer X3 {Let the shackles be released! Or fall forever!}

          Face it, Brandon Headache. You aren’t fooling anyone but yourself if you honestly think you aren’t a slave to Nintendo. By the way, it’s not even Black History Month as that is in February.

            1. Chains of Lucifer X3 {Let the shackles be released! Or fall forever!}

              You give some of us a headache when you blindly defend Nintendo so it fits. If you want to be a Nintendite all of your life, go ahead. Only you can save yourself from those chains Nintendo has on you. If you love those chains, there isn’t much else I can do to help you. But maybe reminding you that you are enslaved will one day help wake you up. Unless Jaded Ridley X3, rest his weak persona, was right about you which means you are just a troll getting a rise out of us. That’s fine, too, as trolls liven things up.

              1. Dude, you are acting like these people have taken actual people hostage and killed others. Wake up. These are video games we’re talking about. I love them too, but sheesh, you are moving into the “psychotic” territory by this point.
