The latest issue of Nintendo Dream featured an interview with Masahiro Sakurai. At one point during the interview, Sakurai talks about Geno, revealing that he had significant interest in Geno contributing a larger role in Super Smash Bros on 3DS and Wii U.
There is a Geno costume in Smash 4, but Sakurai stated that he has wanted Geno to be a playable character since Brawl and that Geno would fit in Smash. He also acknowledged how popular Geno is, especially when talking about older characters.

Put everything from both versions together with the DLC too. That is actually a lot of work and it has more content than Brawl and Melee! Nope. Just can’t see it. Even if I wasn’t in support of a playable Ridley, I still wouldn’t be able to see any excuse as to why he can’t be playable. I’m in support of a bunch of other features that I don’t really care for or use myself in other games like a hard mode, voice chat, etc, so I can look at it these things subjectively. If many fans want a playable Ridley, it doesn’t matter if it wouldn’t fit the character. As long as Sakurai, or whoever is in charge of the franchise going forward, can make it work, even if that means nerfing his size, flight, etc, go for it. As long as he functions properly in the game, why should anyone care if it looks weird? Like I said, it wouldn’t be the first time a character wasn’t true to form in the Smash series yet we don’t see a lot of people up in an uproar about those characters. Pikachu, for example. He’s 1’4 in Pokemon yet he’s as big as Mario. I still don’t buy the “You can resize someone to make them bigger but making them smaller can’t be done.” It’s a double standard, really. But whatever. The anti-Ridley people are welcome to their opinion. Besides, Smash 4 is already out & has all the characters it’s going to get, so I see the battle for Ridley as pointless right now. I don’t care either way whether Geno actually makes it as a real fighter, but this claim goes up there with “I did not add Chrom because he is not unique, so instead I added Lucina- she is unique, because she has the exact same moveset as Marth.” and “The Ice Climbers did not return because they are a character/series that has no future.”
This confirms that he KNEW people wanted him, he COULD have made it happen, he WANTED it to happen since before Brawl, but still didn’t act on it.

Lucina was originally just going to be an alt for Marth. Sakurai chose to give her a unique fighting style instead though (she doesn’t give extra damage on the tip, but does more damage all around). She probably took less than a day to make. Chrom was replaced by Robin, not Lucina. Chrom was originally in the game but Sakurai thought he was too much like Ike, so he decided to replace him with Robin who was a unique fighter. The Ice Climbers thing was bullshit though. There’s no reason they shouldn’t have been in the Wii U version.

Trust me, I was heartbroken when Chrom wasn’t playable but Robin and Lucina were. But the reasoning made sense. Chrom too much like Marth/Ike, Lucina taking like two minutes to make and Robin being a fresh moveset to the FE franchise just makes sense to do what they did. Hopefully he does make it in sometime though!
Okay, so he DID almost happen. Extreme shame he didn’t, but more shame that Sakurai didn’t really try. There were plenty of things from Awakening’s cutscenes Chrom is seen doing that could have made it to Smash. I, a regular gamer, came up with a moveset in minutes using those reference points.
Neutral Special: Spear Throw. This is a charging move. Chrom readies a lance, starting from a miniature lance to a javelin to a steel lance and finally to a silver lance, with each upgrade causing more damage, having more arc, and traveling farther. Releasing the button makes him throw it. No more than one lance can be in the field at any time, eliminating spamming. While Chrom cannot wield lances in his base class of lord, he could as a great lord; just like how Robin cannot wield Nosferatu in his base class of tactician, creative liberties would be taken.
Side Special: Hurling Sword. Seen in an early cutscene featuring Chrom battling “Marth” at Arena Ferox, Chrom jumps high into the air and then somersaults down towards “Marth” with his sword brandished. In Smash, however, there is little vertical gain for this move, but very good horizontal movement. There is a Mii Swordfighter special move that is more or less what is described here.
Up Special: Plunging Blade. In an even earlier cutscene, Chrom dispatches a risen by once again jumping several feet into the air and then plunging his sword into its back, like Link’s final blow to Ganondorf in Twilight Princess. If used for Smash, it would have little horizontal recovery, but decent vertical recovery. On top of that, an airborne opponent getting hit on Chrom’s way down would be meteor smashed, as well as any vulnerable ledge hangers, further discouraging edge-hogging. However, Chrom is vulnerable while withdrawing the sword from the ground; also cannot ledge grab if facing *away* from said ledge, so it may not be a viable option for edge-guarding.
Down Special: Counter. Like just about every other FE fighter, his down special is a counter; however, his counter sends foes *behind* him, while also bouncing them off the ground just beneath his feet, making combos easy. As a balance, his counter is weaker than the other FE fighters’ counters.
Final Smash: Aether/Exalted Falchion. While he does not gain extra power, for a limited time, any attacks he lands heals him 20% of the damage done (example: 10 damage dealt = 2 damage healed). He can still be hurt and take damage for the duration of the FS- he does not become invincible. His side and up specials also have improved recovery during this time as well.
His speed would be below Marth’s but above Ike’s, and his power below Ike’s but above Marth’s.

This is why I’m so stick of the SSB fandom/video game community. Seriously, you’re calling people ungrateful because they’re unhappy over the absence of Geno, or better yet, the absence, of Wolf, the Ice Climbers (even just Popo), Ridley, Snake, the results of the ballot, etc. The bigger picture of we I’m pissed is because this was the last chance for all the veterans to return in the most anticipated game of all time (despite the existence of the 3DS version and no Adventure mode / plot). Any SSB game for here on out will feature inconsistant rosters of multiple cut characters (just like Street Fighter). I used to believe that any character who makes it into the roster would be immortalized in SSB history.
This wouldn’t be so bad if we could just mod the game like we did with Brawl. But no, we’re force to accept the game as it is, in its permanent form, like an act of god.

Yeah, I actually enjoyed Brawl’s story mode, and since I love challenges, I love how confusing it could get. There’s no saying right now how they’re gonna approach the next game, but I can’t imagine them scrapping huge characters such as Mega Man, Ryu, Cloud, maybe even Bayonetta. I just cannot imagine them dropping those in the next one.
I don’t know about that. I guess Bayonetta has the most chances of coming back after Sonic, but I don’t know about the rest. Things can go south pretty easily between companies, and maybe Square and the like won’t see any benefit in lending their characters a second time.

I tespect Sakurai for my memories back then with Melee and Brawl, and the general roster of SSB4 (aside from too much FE), but man. Among all things, that story mode excuse is very embarrassing and unforgivable, out of anything else. I can’t believe he stated that, it sounds childish if you think about it. It is obvious that everything around the core of the game was rushed, because he also wanted to release it on the money printing 3DS. Oh, and Ice Climbers have no future? Same with Duck Hunt, Game and Watch, etc. There’s one of many contradictory examples.
But personally, I shouldn’t be getting into so much beef. My most rnjoyabke days were with Melee and Brawl. Now I don’t really play with anybody. Barely.

Ahem, the story mode was cut because in Brawl the entire story mode was leaked before the game came out and the hard work and resources went to waste- they won’t even need to buy the game. Yada Yada I already said this in another thread in this comment section. Ice Climbers were cut because they literally couldn’t work in time on the normal 3ds. If they went by the “no future” logic characters would be cut left and right. There you go.
