A former Playstation executive has responded to comments made by Moon Studios CEO Thomas Mahler about Dev Kits for the upcoming Nintendo NX console. Moon Studios are the makers of games such as Ori and The Blind Forest.
Mahler was frustrated about the secrecy over the console and the companies not being informed about the specs. He also wishes that there was better communication between the developers and console maker, including updates on the console and an earlier time frame to bring in developer support for a console. Mahler doubted that Nintendo NX will have software support at launch.
Shahid Ahmad, a former Playstation executive, responded to the rant with criticism of his own, calling the rant “uninformed and immature”. He went on to say in a reply that it contained “profound entitlement”.

It’s absolutely true. I love Ori and the Blind Forest and it kinda bums me out that one of its devs is that much of a brat. Kinda like when I learned about who Phil Fish was after playing Fez.
People need to learn that being an asshole is a GOOD THING. Means we aren’t those corporate suits who spit out PR bullshit, we say it as it is, and open the truth up to the world, but if your fine with being lied to and just thinking everything is just peachy then fine, be a delusional consumer.
Absolutely disagree. There is a 100% difference between saying it like it is and being a dumbass. Thomas Mahler is showing to be a fantastic example of the latter.
There’s being an asshole like Kamiya (a fair asshole) and like this guy (a stupid asshole). The guy does have a point, but he dragged his own image through the mud while sharing it.

Considering EA is probably one of the biggest software developers and publishers out there, I’d say yes, they do deserve a dev kit.
The NX and Nintendo would certainly benefit from EA offering support; you not liking their games or the company itself doesn’t change anything about that.

EA would be a big help for Nintendo’s next console. Some people really don’t understand how important they are. A lot of gamers these days buy a console to play the big budget AAA games and EA has those. One of the reasons the Wii U has struggled is because it does not have their games. Someone that can’t play their games on Nintendo’s system will go somewhere else to play them. And the sad part about it is that this has been happening for so long (the lack of third party) that people don’t even bother to get a Nintendo system anymore because they already know it won’t have the games. Nintendo has to step up big time with this next console, or else the exact same thing will happen. Some people try to defend this and say you shouldn’t have bought a Nintendo console expecting third party, but that is really no excuse anymore. They could have gotten that support back a long time ago if they tried. It’s ridiculous that they still haven’t.

I think you’ve got it backwards. If they do something awesome, Nintendo should be approaching them. Not the other way around. There’s a stigma that getting their hands on a dev kit is some prestigious honor, but it shouldn’t be looked at this way. How else is Nintendo going to have a good selection of games at launch? I remember reading that the Wii U didn’t have games for months because devs didn’t have enough time with the dev kits to have games ready for launch.
It is a prestigious honor for any third party developer to develop a game for the console manufacturer. All games from third party developers have to be allowed first and approved once submitted. I don’t know when, why, or how people started acting as if third parties are in control of everything. If Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, and Steam decided they didn’t want EA making games for them what would EA do. Nothing or they would try to make their own platform.
They pretty much have a hybrid platform called EA access. Which is pretty cool, but yeah MS allowed that too happen and Sony didn’t. Even EA has to get Sony’s approval which they didn’t, so it was a no go.
I’m sure if Microsoft and Sony had that mentality, their sales would be suffering as much as Nintendo’s.

If you’re free to express your opinion (or,”bitch and moan”, as you’ve called it) about anything you want, why can’t the guy express his opinion about what the Ori developer said? If you are allowed to say what you want, he is too.
If you disagree with his statement, sure, that’s alright. But with the things you’ve just said, you did nothing but contradict yourself.
Also, while the developer did say problems like this exist with many hardware manufacturers, he was obviously giving the NX as a prime example in his case.

I don’t really think Moon is simply acting out of entitlement, they have a legitimate point here. Nintendo historically has struggled with 3rd party development ever since the Wii. Even with this being seen, and considering that two already released alternatives exist, the NX is going to need something major to kickstart the system, and yet Nintendo is refusing to allow developers to begin working on software for the system. This is going to limit the amount of launch content that gets released not to mention the fact that it will harm the NX for at least a year if not more given the development time necessary for games. Yes, Moon is ranting here, but 1st party companies need the support of 3rd parties (as demonstrated by the Wii U), so Nintendo shouldn’t be treating interested developers with disregard, especially ones who made a game as fantastic as Ori.

Sure, the guy could have acted a bit more “professionally”, but it should be in Nintendo’s best interest to get as many dev kits out there as possible so every developer can chip in to make NX a success from launch, especially considering Nintendo’s past. An indie dev like Moon Studios shouldn’t have to be begging to put their games on Nintendo’s consoles.
It is easy to comment on situations that you are not a part of. You do not know if the developer even went through the correct channels to receive a dev kit. We know nothing other than he is having a hard time getting one. We don’t know if there is a dev kit to give the developer yet. We don’t know how many dev kits Nintendo have available or what stage of the dev kit Nintendo is in. There is more than a version of dev kits that go out before the final version go out.

Just for the sake of defending him, Nintendo do need good 3rd party support, their previous consoles has lacked that, which has hurt the sales.
Nintendo has had third party support for most of their systems. since the beginning. The WiiU era is really the only time they really didn’t get any. Wii had a ton of great third party titles, GC did too. but sales on GC were terrible because of terrible marketing and Install base.
Nintendo has to market the games like they do with Smash Bros, Splatoon and Kart 8. No point of having support if nobody knows about its there.
I agree with what you’ve said, but while it is true that the Wii U was the only Nintendo console to lack the most third party support, when you compare Nintendo’s consoles to the Playstation and Xbox, you’ll always notice that their competition is always one step ahead of them when it comes to third party software. That’s what I think Torkil was also getting at, Nintendo needs the third party support compared to their competition.

Entitlement my ass! Moon studios is an indie dev who first of all developed for PC. All they want is the opportunity to strt developing for NX and give Nintendo the support they effin’ need already. Calling somebody immature for calling out bullshit practices in the console industry that isn’t a problem when it comes to PC shows the console peasantism that is just raging in the dev community for consoles and how it’s accepted to be fucked around with in that industry. For those of you who don’t agree with Thomas Mahler’s rant you obviously wanna see a repeat of the drought on Wii U, in my case I already see how NX is gonna go down the Wii U route. For one EA doesn’t port Call of Duty, that would be Activision. PC is an open platform. Consoles are a closed platform. There is your difference right there. As I stated above, how do you know how many dev kits are available at the moment? How do you know what version of dev kit Nintendo is at? Also, this is the same process that Sony and Microsoft go through. If I wanted to develop a game for PC, it would be easy for me to start to due to it being an open platform. I can target specs of different PCs. You cannot do that for a closed platform until the final specs are made, hence the different version. This is why major publisher receive dev kits first. They are able to give feedback on the issue they are running into and the console manufacturers make adjustments and send out a new version of the dev kit.

I don’t know… I think Sony WOULD dislike the comment that Moon Studios made, afterall Sony is probably like, “SHUSH. We need them to keep launching hardware without software so we can stay ahead of them! Don’t tell them to sell software AND hardware at the same time, they’d crush us all!”

Nintendo console with equal third party support as other platforms would indeed be glorious. But I think if it does eventually happen, Nintendo waited FAR too long to finally achieve it and the customers that would be theirs are already invested in Sony/MS/PC. They’re going to need to work hard, like really hard, getting those people back. Otherwise, they’re gonna need to start over and get new customers.
Agreed. That’s what happened to me. No way in hell I’m buying an NX day one. ZeldaU port? I’ll play it on my WiiU, thanks. No StarFox (unless it’s a port) – No metroid. (hadn’t been time to develop) I can already get 3rd party on my X1… There is literally no reason for me to buy an NX anymore. Not for several years when it’s cheaper and there are games.
