The International Game Developers Association, one of the largest organizations for game developers and representation for about 8,000 members worldwide, has issued a special statement on Nintendo and the recent firing of Nintendo Treehouse marketing employee Alison Rapp. It was released by executive director Kate Edwards.
The IGDA’s remarks note that, while Nintendo’s official statement “strives to distance the company from anything related to the orchestrated online campaign of harassment and defamation that was raging against her”, the timing in dealing with the issue was “dubious at best”. The statement proceeds to criticize Nintendo for the firing, stating that Nintendo “seems oblivious to the consequences of their actions, not realizing the perceived victory it handed to the online hate groups who are now pursuing the dismissal of other women game developers by derision and defamation to their companies”. The IGDA notes that they “would expect that all game development and publishing companies would be fully aware of negative social media dynamics and be more discerning of online feedback, as well as more protective of their employees”.

It should be noted that the IGDA is EXTREMELY fucking corrupt. They’re primarily active in the industry to fund things that line up with their ideology, and to shame things that they deem “problematic”. It’s a shit show.
“They’re primarily active in the industry to fund things that line up with their ideology.” Well no shit a company would support things that go along with what they are all about…that’s not being corrupt that’s doing your thing.
She used her PUBLIC RELATIONS account to advocate pedophilia. Hello, IGDA, it’s time to open your eyes.
YES, the moonlighting charge is dubious, because it’s a much more polite motive than saying she was ABYSMAL at her job and should have been fired much sooner.
what a bunch of bullshit.
there was no “orchestrated online campaign of harassment and defamation”
The only reason why this is getting this much attention is because she is a woman. plain and simple.
And before people link this to GamerGate or whatever, it wasn’t them that made the complaint to Nintendo, it was a shelter for sexual abuse that did.
IGDA is a cesspool of indie-fetishizing SJWs who are actively protecting this child-porn legalization advocate.
This makes me sick.

I’m sorry, but it doesn’t matter what someone is being accused of. When it comes down to it, if someone is actually doing something wrong, as Rapp was with the whole pedo sympathy shit, you fire them as soon as possible. Doesn’t matter if you are a gaming company, movie studio, a local retail store, a newspaper delivery boy… If they have done wrong, which she had, regardless of whether it was for that the hate groups were accusing or for or not, you fucking fire them.
If they have done wrong…she thought some crazy shit, THINKING can’t be wrong, it’s THINKING, it doesn’t DO anything.
No but SAYING you’re ok with pedophilia is a giant red flag to pretty much everyone. You might not have gone out and molested a child but don’t blame people if they want to distance themselves from you afterwards.
Amen to that. sad that these guys dont care and are out to defame nintendo for doing the right thing, its like shaming a pastor for actually teaching the word of God and not taking a few passages from the Bible, say a few amens, wave hankies and spout political nonsense.
…did they need to input their opinion..she was fired for breaking her contract, in which she got a second job. Sure, there was harassment on this side that people mistakenly saw as the reason.
I wonder, for fairness, of any of this would’ve been taken out of control if instead of firing her, they fired a male in the same position..
No one would have given a shit
-||Exactly, the Empire doesn’t care about her primitive views||-
The Empire thrives on 100% loyal subjects. she wasn’t one of them.
I didn’t have much to say about the situation before, simply because I didn’t care enough I guess, but seeing how people still can’t drop this joke of an issue, there is one thing I do want to say, and agree with you on:
It’s so ridiculous how this whole thing is being blown way out of proportion simply because she’s a woman. All those people who are in an uproar about her being fired wouldn’t have given a rat’s ass about what happened if the employee in question was a male. But since it’s a female, everyone needs to whiteknight her, and bring in topics that are absolutely irrelevant, just as an attempt to make themselves and that Allison person “important”, when they really are not.
She was fired because she didn’t do her job right, and that’s it. There is no explanation needed, Nintendo doesn’t have to make a public announcement to justify their decision to fire her. If she doesn’t stick to the policies and rules of the company she’s working for, she has to deal with the consequences, as simple as that.
It’s nothing but simply and absolutely ridiculous how this whole thing is STILL being talked about, and how she’s being presented like she’s the innocent employee who was fired by the big evil bosses of the company, even though it’s actually her who, in fact, is very much in the wrong.
*Alison
She wasn’t fired for being a woman.
She was fired for being a pedo apologist who violated her contract, was disrespectful to fans, and was incompetent at her job.
It was less than a year ago that we got an article quoting developers talking to Nintendo about Xbox Live and PSN, and Nintendo saying that they had no idea how those services worked because they didn’t use them. It doesn’t surprise me that Nintendo’s higher ups are living in such a bubble that they wouldn’t know a thing about “Gamer Gate” or just about any other social campaigns. IDG’s use of “oblivious” does seem to be the right word, here.
Note: I know pretty much nothing about this “news event” beyond this specific article. But I have no intention of defending anyone, just saying I’m not surprised that Nintendo wouldn’t have a clue about what’s going on “bigger picture.”
Long story short, she was fired for having a second job, as a camgirl, which violated her contract.
She was also a pedo apologist.
Yeah, the cam girl thing is the issue, not even an essay she wrote years ago
shes a pedo apologist ….. there is no need for a “bigger picture” or understanding lol.
What would it matter whether they knew about those things or not? Why should that influence their actions? They saw something wrong, they took care of it. I hardly think being a supposedly victimized female is enough to justify NOT being fired for completely legitimate reasons.
she wanted to fuck little boys it seems but was fire because she was a CAM whore using Nintendo products
Well, we don’t know if she wanted to.
But she wanted to be okay to do so
“But she wanted to be okay to do so” First of all, what do you mean by that sentence? If she wanted to do it it would be okay for her to do so, and if not it wouldn’t? I agree, if someone would want to be a cam-girl or something along that profession, let them, BUT if it goes against the other job’s contract, she wouldn’t have any other choice than leaving the original job
She is not a game developer
She made propedo tweets as recent as December 2015
well then that holds water, but I still say that this is such a non-issue because she isn’t a developer, she is just a mouthpiece. They are fighting the wrong battle
-||That doesn’t invalidate his sentence in any way||-
replied to a different comment of mine it seems… no big deal
On the next…

Can I point out the irony that her dissertation was defending the things that #gamergate was angry for censoring, such as Lin in Xenoblade Chronicles X.
At any rate the criticisms of people who are not gamers hardly matter. Nobody knew who IGDA were until till today and they will be forgotten pretty quickly. At the end of the day Alison brought Nintendo into disrepute. She should have kept her employment at Nintendo private, and talk about stupid making such a controversial dissertation public. Any company can fire you if your actions on social media are detrimental to their business.
Her dissertation was defending actual child exploitation, not lolicon anime & game stuff; I’ve yet to see any prominent GamerGate hashtag user lump the two together.
Moreover, very few people cared about the idea behind Lin’s clothing change, what they disliked was how poorly it was done and how it is indicative of a larger problem of censorship, the start of a slippery slope that could culminate with the next Xeno game being censored to hell and back, just like it happened to Bravely Second after the minor changes done to Bravely Default.
That was done by Square Enix not Nintendo. lol
Actually, Nintendo was publishing the Bravely games in America so they actually did have a role in the games being censored over here.
Please go kill yourself? Never speak to me again after you leave the internet for 10 years? -_-
What? lol Those with publishing rights have the power to censor the game they are publishing even if they themselves didn’t develop the game. If you knew anything about publishing rights, you’d know this. But that doesn’t mean Square Enix can’t take on some of the blame, though, since they didn’t have to take Nintendo of America’s money or help to publish the games stateside, relying on their own money. But whatever.
You are a fucking idiot. Please go die in a fire and change your avatar to MJ from Captain Planet or I’ll eat you alive since you don’t understand that Square Enix not only made the game. But they censored shit that didn’t need to be censored? Like the ages of the main cast? Or Native Americans being removed cause genocide and crap. Even though they removed the wrong native american tribe.
Are you even that retarded to not know your own history in America? -_-
(I’m surrounded by fucking morons in the gaming community?)
This is very sad and please don’t reply to me ever again until you turn 21? :/
Okay. I see you are just trolling me so there is no need for me to take you seriously in this conversation. Adios!
LMFAO! XD

;)
Where’s the hate train for Square? XD
too funny. lots of creepy white knights out there with their agendas running these sites and organizations. facts don’t matter. just go on neogaf and the laughs keeping coming.
Why is it when anything happens to a female developer everyone instantly cries “GAMERGATE!!!!”. Do you need some sort of scapegoat? She was bad at her job, advocating pedophilia on her personal account and has a second job which Nintendo disagrees with. Especially when her second job is modelling. Especially when her shoots are her in risqué clothing with NINTENDO products. How is that setting an example to the Familiy Friendly company?
Maybe you should really think before you use a scapegoat. The complaints came from a group that’s against child stuff and mothers. Not a hate group.
Because Isis was already taken and 4Chan was already used for trolling users and holidays. You can argue that they hate SJW’s as much as the other guys online. They even trolled a bunch of bitches for starting a hashtag about banning Father’s Day? XD
Even Anita wasn’t filled by that BS! But many idiots did and I’m glad to be born on the side of the internet where trolling and pissing off blind sheep is awesome! ;)
For crying out loud, she should have been fired by the mere fact of being a ridiculous over sexualized cosplayer, better yet, she should not have been hired. The paladins of this pathetic whore should stop turning a blind eye to promote their foolish cause and not get a fight with who they can not win.
“she should have been fired by the mere fact of being a ridiculous over sexualized cosplayer”
Unless the company has some sort of policy on that image, that’s nonsense.
It is not “nonsense” when a company wants to keep a good image for families.
They knew what they were hiring from the beginning as they could have researched her early on.
“Guys someone got fired frome Nintendo!” “so? ….who cares?” “It was a woman” “OH MY FUCKING GOD ALERT THE PRESSES! THIS IS FUCKING HARASSMENT AND UNFAIR TREATMENT OF A WOMAN NOBODY SHOULD SUPPORT NINTENDO AND THEIR BACKWARDS THINKING!”
I agree. I hope companies do better in the future to just say they don’t approve of online harassment at the TIME of the harassment and not after. Just to let us gamers know they at least give a damn and aren’t taking a stance on any radical online gamer backlash movement. It’s not like I approve of Allison and realize she got fired for valid reasons but Nintendo could have atleast issued a statement at the time of her harassment because before all that stuff coming out about Alison, she was being harassed for awhile online. I mean if people are just going to keep targeting women PARTICULARLY and dig things up on them, they better do the same for ppl in their own movements if they care so much about these controversies, cause god only knows plenty of people harassing can’t have clean closets themselves but we all know that’s not what this is about lol. The digging up of personal information of various women already across the web who have had something to say about games regardless of your own stance for or against them don’t need to have personal information exposed more so than others in the industry for simply having those perspectives. I mean if we can already start making a list of ppl this is happening to than we have a reoccurring problem that is specific to particular group of ppl in the industry and that pattern reflects badly. All Nintendo has to do as a company is stick up against that sort of thing in the future cause how they handle their games is fine by me as of late and I respect what their decisions regarding them and catering to their markets.
Pointing out her crap practices and behavior is not harassment.
Moreover, Nich Maragos was a much more prominent target of Torrential Downpour, but you didn’t hear anything about it because playing him as a victim didn’t serve any SJW “muh soggy knees” agendas, and your bias didn’t let you check any sources other than the ones crying sexism.
Her harassment wasn’t all about her her behavior in regards to company policy. A lot of it happened before hand in regards to her feminist perspectives. It’s all well and good to criticize her essay and practices afterwards honestly its after those perspectives that people even gave a crap about that. It’s also hard to take people seriously who are criticizing her essay while themselves supporting retaining the sexualization of children in western games. Like I wish the people calling her out ACTUALLY gave a crap about children and integrity but it all feels so disingenuous with various parties having their own agendas. I honestly don’t consider what Nintendo is doing for with their own games “that THEY publish, in order to appeal to a greater market, and what’s best for games to be “censorship”. Non of that crap effects the game experience to me and if it makes gaming more inclusive than I want what’s best for the game’s sales and reachnew players to. I also don’t take anyone serious who says “sjws” cause that’s just a general useless term for literally any marginalized or NOT individuals, all with different perspectives across a wide amount of social topics, just to be dismissive. Useless crap used by overly reactionary gamers. I still agree with the above statement as to harassment AS it happens…. not towards Nintendo’s just decision of termination but that when shit does happen, to just say something. The fact that she held a particular perspective in regards to gender politics is what links the issue to sexism cause that’s where it all started. Not from genuine concern over her practices which no one would have blown out of proportions to begin with or even known about if it weren’t tied to that reaction from twitter users in the first place.
*sigh.
This is getting annoying. By this point, things have actually died down by quite a bit and people, but…
… I guess some people don’t that fact, so they’re bringing out people like these guys.
Well, time to bring out the popcorn.
At this point I just want this nonsense to stop popping up in front of my eyeballs. She was fired and that was that. Time to move on.
Is Nintendo’s official statement for why they fired her bullshit? Hell yes, it is! “We fired her because she was getting getting harassed.” Out of context, many will now think Nintendo doesn’t care to defend their employees when they are getting bullied online, even though in this particular case, she’s bringing it upon herself by antagonizing the very people that are “picking on her.” More troubling is the fact she was abusing her official Nintendo Twitter account to antagonize people upset with Nintendo yet she wasn’t fired for that alone!? That, to me, seems to be a far more troubling reason to get upset with Nintendo over this whole debacle for. It feels like they actually support ridiculing your consumer/fanbase. That’s not cool at all. Then again, this is a Nintendo of America thing, no doubt, & that place is all kinds of corrupt.
https://media.giphy.com/media/a0FuPjiLZev4c/giphy.gif
-_-*
This is starting to get annoying. She brought this on to herself, she breached a contract that she agreed to and signed. She pissed off fans of a series that belongs to the company which she worked at and is now crying foul acting like she’s a victim and she did no wrong. :l and ontop of that, we found out that somehow she found a way to defend pedophilia.
Is anyone defending her even know why and how this whole thing started? I mean Brandon and his whole crew lost their jobs at GT and no one is crucifying DEFY, but Nintendo is somehow to blame for this person’s dismiss because they failed to go through with a contract that she agreed to, signed, and broke.
-_-* ffs
Did you actually read the paper that everybody keeps bringing up that supposedly “defends pedophilia”?
Couldn’t win the argument last time, so you’re trying again despite the fact that people actually read it and you’re completely in the wrong?
Did you actually read the tweets in which she specifically expresses her desire to have real child sexual exploitation to be decriminalized?
Did you actually know that she is in cavorts with Sarah Nyberg AKA “Sarah Butts” and Promise Redmond AKA “Valis77”, both registered sex offenders who have been proven to have created and distributed CP?
All this shit just because she has a vagina…
Why do people keep making such a big deal about this? I never even heard of her until she got fired. I’m sure many people gets fired from Nintendo, but you sure don’t hear any complaints about it.
defending child porn, being a cam whore and putting a Wii remove in her pussy. Yup. She’s the good guy in this debate? -_-
Also nice avatar moron!
Why do morons keep calling ME a moron? The fact is, she got fired. Case closed. Whoopty doo! Who cares about her? It’s not like Shigeru Miyamoto got fired. THEN I can see people making a big deal out of it.
The different between him and her is that he’s not a fucking sex offender you idiot! XD
You do realize he never once said she was innocent or even defended her, right? He’s simply asking why should we care about some random person getting fired.
CP? -_-
I agree because the statement makes a valid point about the timing of the firing. Nintendo did indeed cave to a hate group that had initiated a campaign of “harassment and defamation”. I believe it is too sensationalist to say she advocated for pedophilia. Rather, my understanding is that she was criticizing the west for trying to impose it’s values on the east (i.e., Japan) with regard to the sexualizing young girls in media, arguing that it was a form of cultural imperialism. The argument was more nuanced than people give her credit for. As far as the provocative photos on her Twitter and the other possible job as a cam girl (was this ever verified?), she simply appears to have a very sex positive attitude, so I don’t think these activities were “wrong” per se, but I do think they reflected poor judgment on her part given that she worked for a family-family company that has an image to uphold. In other words, I don’t think there was anything wrong with what she was doing, personally, but I also know I would definitely lose my own job were I engaging in the same behavior. Again, it all comes down to timing. It was a hate group who initiated the campaign (do you research if you don’t believe me). It was an organized, merciless attack, and the hate mongers won in this case, which shouldn’t have happened. Nintendo may have had grounds for dismissal, but it was a bunch of misogynists–and racists I might add–that dug up the dirt. That’s why I agree with this statement.
Besides, Nintendo had other options. First, they already said her alleged pro-pedophilia thesis paper was a non-factor. If the matter was her Twitter account, they could have asked her to remove the images in question and quit her second job. They could have also removed her from her current position and put her somewhere out of the limelight. They could and should have handled this better…especially for a company that tries harder than the others to appeal to female gamers.
I hope this is the last article on this.
Same (-_-)
Ok I’m a little lost. What did this girl actually do to get fired?
