Rumour: Nintendo NX Will Be Capable Of Outputting 4K

Verified Reddit user, UntypedHero, who recently posted the rumour about NX having x86 architecture, has posted another thread on reddit with even more alleged information on Nintendo’s upcoming console. The user touches on amiibo functionality, the DDR4 memory, and the rumour that the NX is capable of outputting 4K. Here are the full details from the most recent post:

“As you are getting flooded with fake leaks and my inbox is getting flooded with questions:

  • The retail name for the NX is unknown to developers (or they are holding back). I’ve asked multiple sources.
  • I know of at least 1 third-party Wii U game that has/have been successfully ported to NX.
  • Amiibo are still supported (if you hadn’t already guessed).
  • Friend codes are still a thing (unfortunately).
  • I don’t know when the NX will be announced. Speculation is this month.
  • There are multiple “gimmicks” with the NX, one is optional.
  • There are physical dev-kits out in the wild, I don’t have access to these.
  • I don’t know the model of the GPU, however there is little doubt (from what I’ve been told) that it an AMD.
  • The NX is capable of outputting 4k. Consensus is upscaling and streaming.
  • DDR4 Memory (between 6GB – 8GB). EDIT: Available to software.

EDIT: Just to be clear – Although there are dev-kits out there, I highly doubt that you will get a direct leak from any of the studios that have them.
EDIT 2: Apparently friend code wasn’t the correct term. You can only add people you know.”

As you will probably already know, Nintendo hasn’t confirmed any of these details, and we can’t know anything for certain until the company decides to disclose information about the NX.

It’s also worth noting that at the time of writing this article, UntypedHero has now removed their original post from Reddit.

      1. Still though, that does matter because 4K tvs will be standard sooner rather than later and even if its “successor” is “around the corner” in what form that successor takes on this new platform (the NX being cited as new platform) that resolution will still be a key element in the lifespan… if we get a solid 7 years out of a console that isn’t a “mistake” like the Wii U (or simply came out a few years late) then it could be selling till 2024 which would be very nice

        1. There’s no way in hell Nintendo is keeping any form of hardware alive for 7 years, especially now under such strong competition. If the Wii didn’t last that long, nothing will. I’d rather sacrifice 4K resolution (seriously, how many of the posters on this site own a 4K TV?) for a lower price, all the more so if connectivity with the portable becomes a real, pivotal selling point of the thing.

          1. in two years, prices slash and half of the people posting on this site could have one. And if it is just upscale, it is not the same thing and true 4K output. Nonetheless, I still believe that it could last that long depending on what they do because while people talk about the tech growing at an exponential rate, I still think that gaming specs have in some sense plateaued to a point where it isn’t all about graphics and power, and if Nintendo hits a certain bar, the drive for “more power” won’t be necessary. But I don’t know, maybe not and maybe they will release something in five years after NX… I hope not

            1. It’s not gonna work like that. 4K still needs content that supports it. No one’s gonna buy a 4K TV yet when neither gaming console (PS4 and Xbox One) can play at that resolution.

            2. Are you counting on that price slash just because of technology moving forward or have the manufacturers themselves mentioned that the product will be less pricey in the future? True about the upscale, though. I guess you can have it both ways if we’re just talking about upscaling.

The reason why I don’t believe it will last that long is because Nintendo needs to sell consoles. This might sound painfully obvious, but take into account that, unlike its competitors, Nintendo just gets money for selling hardware and software. A longer gen cycle might favor Sony and Microsoft, but not Nintendo. I definitely agree on the specs plateau thing, but not because of power, but because of a lack of originality. That’s a discussion for another time, though.

              1. Well, I think Nintendo does very well in terms of pushing the tech boundaries with the software and getting a lot out of very little as mentioned in an article before. History tells us the prices will go down so it is just a matter of time. If the adoption to 4K takes longer than the HD adoption, then this will give the consoles more life as well as I mentioned.

I think as long as the new system sells and they can usher out a “new” NX at a later date or an upgrade that is not a completely new console, then the life is longer. And if the handheld and console are integrated, that will help… we really are just pissing in the wind with this information though. I look forward to a real discussion and predictions as soon as the real info comes to light

            3. I will be a last adopter of 4K TVs. If cable is not 4K programming then what do I need it for (just Netflix and bluray) I barely use netflix now and bluray won’t do it for me either. I am only one person with a different frame of mind.

                1. I forgot 4K bluray haven’t came out yet. Thanks. That’s why I will be a last adopter. No content is ready for it.

          2. I own a 4k tv, they’re really cheap now. I only payed about 5-6 (i don’t remember the exact price) hundred dollars for a 50 inch 4k smart tv.

            1. Just curious, what do you watch on it that has 4K programming? If you using it to play PC games in 4K then I understand.

              1. Im saving up for a new PC that can handle 4k, other than that it has great upscaling, and im waiting for consoles and tv shows to be in 4k.

          3. Reminds me of the scene from Back to the Future where me kid asks Marty if he has any tvs, and Marty is like “yeah we have four” and the kid is like “you do?!” Sorry… Too lazy to look up the exact quote.

        2. everyone keeps harping on about wanting their consoles to be able to output games at native 4K. do you realize how powerful the GPU(graphics card) will have to be to be able to do that. and if Sony or Nintendo was to do that, are you guys aware of how expensive the console will have to be to be. you will be looking at a console that’s at least $600.

      2. That’s true but 4Ktvs are selling so well now to where one would have to think why not take advantage right now especially when there are 4K capable graphics cards that cost in the affordable range of $200 to $300. I think this is something that Nintendo should aim for regarding the NX so that way it’s way ahead of current gen consoles and it sparks more interest from PS4 and Xbox One owners. Remember how people criticized Sony and Microsoft for jumping into the HD realm too soon with their last gen consoles and how it paid off in the end? This could be a similar scenario for Nintendo with the NX If the rumors are indeed true about it being 4K capable

          1. What are you talking about? The Radeon R9 280x is capable of 4K upscaling and it only cost $200 while the R9 290x which is more powerful is also 4K capable and it only cost $299 plus tax a GTX 960 would cost you around $200 and a GTX 970 is also 4K capable and it only cost $300 plus tax So yeah there are more affordable options out there for Nintendo to seek and it’ll be cheaper for them because they’ll buy the GPUs in bulk. The joke’s on you for not doing proper research lol

              1. I thought Sony used off the shelf parts for the PS4 and just customized them but hey I could be wrong

                    1. Customization is not done at Sony but from the manufacturer so no, it is not off the shelf parts.

        1. “So well”? Where are they selling so well? It’s not like I keep up with sales data from that particular market, but I’m genuinely surprised by your claim. Besides, the tech is nowhere near being that affordable. It would be neat, don’t get me wrong, but it’s just not how Nintendo does (and needs to do) things.

          1. Well of course 4Ktvs are not selling like gangbusters but they are selling well considering their price. Do you remember the price for standard HDtvs when the Xbox 360 and the PS3 were first on the market? They were expensive as hell. If Nintendo wants to sell a lot of NXs as Kimishima has said they want to, they have to go outside their ” comfort zone ” and take some risks. I don’t know about you but I want Nintendo to be on top of the gaming world again

            1. Not fucking the company up comes before being “on top of the gaming world”. Recall the situation they’re currently in: both competitors have a head start no matter how you look at it. If the NX is supposed to compete with current gen consoles (assuming they last another 5 years, which I seriously doubt), the NX can’t be as expensive as those. If it’s supposed to compete with their next systems, the beefed specs are going to make the price rise high. It’s a lose-lose situation, and I’m having Project Café flashbacks the more I look at it. They need not to concern themselves with what the other two companies are doing and take the lead, even if it’s just by doing something completely different. A hybrid-ish system would be a good start.

            2. Why does it matter if they on top of the gaming world? As long as good games are being made and they can maintain a good install base, then no need to dominate the market. That talk is only for bragging rights which the gaming industry do not need. It would be nice to go out of their comfort zone but 4K is not out of their comfort zone. It is just resolution. I would think by now people would want better A.I. and physics in games instead of just up the resolution with the same A.I. that is dumb as bricks or queue any dumb joke.

              1. i definitely agree. then people piss on so called “gimmicks” then but those are part of what leads to innovation which after new iterations is refined and perfect. Like still being able to ise the wiimote’s on the wii U has been great and motion controls in general seemed to have improved. Now we have a second screen and while that might not have been utilized to its up most potential (we’ll see how Star fox plays) there may be reasons for that which will be and can be improved in the NX along with other unknowns but hopefully coupled with enough power to last and support third parties. I think it is all very possible

    1. the PS4k is not displaying graphics in native 4K. it’s still 1080p but the system will upscale it to 4k resolution, which if you have a decent 4k tv it already does that. for Sony to put out a console that can display graphic intensive games at native 4k it will be very expensive. a lot more than $400.

    1. But why should Nintendo reveal the NX at E3 especially regarding rumors that Sony may try to steal some of the NX’s spotlight by revealing the PS4.5 or the PS4K? Revealing it at a special Nintendo Direct months before E3 would be a smarter option in my opinion because it’ll put even more heat on Sony and Microsoft and it’ll generate more hype for the NX going into E3 so more eyes will be on Nintendo. This strategy worked well for the PS4 and Xbox One so I really don’t see why it can’t work out well for the NX too

      1. The spotlight stealing part. There conference\direct are on 2 different days and at 2 different times. How can one steal the thunder from the other. As far as after the doors open, the media will be everywhere. I have seen people say this a lot and it make no sense. Also, both companies are not thinking I have to outdo the other at E3. They thinking hope it satisfies what people expect.

          1. That more spoke to how bad xbox conference was than how sony’s was but they did take advantage of that situation though.

    2. They never said E3! They said 2016! It could be shown this month, or they could wait till E3, they haven’t said so stop acting like they have!

  1. |||Nintendo Dark Commander Quadraxis-NX Prime|||

-||Everything is pointing to the number 4, our new console will be named after me, The Nintendo Quadraxis||-

    1. There is an edit but it still doesn’t make sense. Most of the people that are on my friends list were complete strangers to me.

    2. “EDIT 2: Apparently friend code wasn’t the correct term. You can only add people you know.”

I feel like this could imply that you will be able to add your friends you have connected to facebook and twitter, much like how miitomo works

  2. Besides the 4K bit, “Friend codes are still a thing” is another bit that pokes holes in this rumour.

Friend codes aren’t even a thing on Wii U, so it would make 0 sense to bring them back, especially when it looks like Nintendo Network ID’s are here to stay. Especially with Miitomo adding friends via Facebook and Twitter, I only see them making the process easier, not harder.

  3. “Resolution-Gate” pushes on into the Nx generation.

I don’t doubt it could produce 4k resolution depending on the types of games released. Nintendo’s Wii U games are often very cartoony, which works very well for them. They can get away with extremely low polygon counts on graphical assets.

Even the PS3 was able to render 4k on a couple of games. Another World 25th Anniversary Edition being one of them. It’s rendered internally at 4k and then downsampled to 1080p on the fly in order to output correctly. Had Sony implemented the HDMI 2.0 spec on the PS3 then it would be a 4k displayed game. I forget what the other one was.

Compare character polygon counts with what is arguably the best looking Wii game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The Wii U version is said to be using around the same character poly counts, with some even using the same models – only with more detailed animations, and rendered at a native 1080p.

Super Smash Bros Brawl – Donkey Kong 4,758 polygons
Super Smash Bros Brawl – Samus (Zerosuit) 5,089 polygons
Super Smash Bros Brawl – Snake 5,149 polygons
Super Smash Bros Brawl – Mario 5,227 polygons
Super Smash Bros Brawl – Luigi 5,632 polygons
Super Smash Bros Brawl – Wario 5,762 polygons
Super Smash Bros Brawl – Marth 6,249 polygons
Super Smash Bros Brawl – Peach 6,316 polygons

Now a launch window PS4 game where the character has more polygons just in his knit beanie hat.

InFamous: Second Son (2014) – 120,000 (60,000 head polygons, 7500 hat polygons). Running at native 1080p.
Keeping in mind it’s an open world game where a single screen shots can top more than 1 million or more polygons. I have no doubt the PS4 could render 4k with much lower polygon counts. Even the PSVR will be doing 1080p x2 displays @ 120fps.
So if the Nintendo Nx is anything close to the 2+ year old PS4 is should be expected to handle 4k.

  4. I seriously hope Nintendo makes their next console to be more competitive. The Nintendo console I’ve always dreamt of was a console that had equal third party support as well as having great Nintendo exclusives. It’s sad that this hasn’t happened yet. The Gamecube was the last one that came close to that and even that still missed out on a lot of big games. If Nintendo tries to make another system like that but advertised it well enough, made sure it had good online services, priced right, etc, then I would be happy. Even if it doesn’t beat the competition in terms of sales, I will be very glad Nintendo chose to once again become competitive. They can bring out all the “gimmicks” they want for all I care as long as it’s optional and the console has healthy third party support. The people that keep saying Nintendo shouldn’t make a “PlayStationXbox2.5” are not thinking right. Nintendo having a console similar to the others in no way is going to make them stop making great games. That’s what Nintendo does best. People shouldn’t kid themselves into thinking that things like the Wii U Gamepad is what it takes for Nintendo to be good.

  5. I swear, all I hear about lately is 4k this and 4k that. I only recently became familiar with the term 4k when I noticed that those Ultra HD TV’s are 4k. Yet everybody acts like they’re SO familiar with it. And what is DDR4? Dance Dance Revolution 4? LOL! I hate when something has the same abbreviations as certain games. Like when people write AC for Assassin’s Creed. When it could also stand for Animal Crossing.

  6. I'm just an Animal Crossing

True that. The video game industry I believe is single handedly responsible for making flat screen panal HD display TVs so common. It feels like it happened over night but I know it didn’t. I bought my first HD tv in 2007 Samsung 32″ 720P HD LCD TV and it was the shiznit! Now 10 years later BAM! 4K TV. Dang! Oh the refresh rates and remember DLP? That was cool. But Not more efficient nor did it have longevity over LCD and LED.
    PS
    I’ve never liked plasmas.

  7. this is actually pretty meh news. Not because 4K sucks or there isn’t enough content, but because any 4K TV already streams 4K so this feature is kind of pointless. If you own a 4K TV you can already stream 4K. If it was 4K blu ray that would be a difference maker. Once again Nintendo is going cheap and will be left in the dust. PS4K will have the 4K blu ray drive and everyone who is thinking about getting a 4K blu ray player will choose that (just like they chose PS3 for blu ray and PS2 for DVD). This is really disappointing news. There’s no point to this feature whatsoever.

  8. Meh, roll me over when Nintendo drops some “rumors” as to what’s going on.

Other than that, it’ll make toast, it can do your taxes, it’ll baby sit your kids!, it slices French fries in three different styles! The amazing NX is stronger than Stacker 2! (Tiny wrestling nod there). My rumor list literally doesn’t stop, kind of like ol Miley Ray Cyrus.

  9. Why, why still want to compared PC vs Consoles??? The new generations of cpu , gpu and memory and ssd are killed any specs from one console . No way to compared even if the console will made from Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft or ACME. The magic of the console consist on the games and tecniques and eforts of programers and hardware. The consoles are a great thing for games because programers will aply diferent techniques and programing language in order to do the game work and look fine and the diferences will be un noticiable , but a console are so bad PC. Just because a console uses an x86 based Cpu dont made it a PC! Its similar to compared apples with oranges or the earth with mars. And also because all consoles will use an x 86 based architecture its bad for games because programers want to make the code one time on a powerfull one x86 PC and just adjust the code to fit on a less powered one but compatible and at the end every one will play esactly the same games under sony, microsoft, nintendo or acme logo.

    1. I dont want to play the same games on all consoles , but for programers are more easy to develop fast for all consoles and make money. But every one want to see the same games on all consoles ??? some at 900p others at 768p and others may be at 1080p but still the same game. The world need diferent and abundant numbers of titled but diferent titles not the copy of the imitation of the old or new one.

  11. I hate to be that guy, but…
“There are multiple “gimmicks” with the NX”
…seriously? AGAIN? Fuck this shit, at this point i WANT Nintendo to go third-party. I don’t want their gimmicky bullshit, I just want good games!!!

    1. If you are a fan of friend codes, sit down & shut the hell up! D:< Don't give Nintendo any stupid ideas to bring that bullshit back. They come up with enough stupid ideas on their own as it is.
