Fire Emblem Is Now Considered A “Major IP” For Nintendo

If you’re a Fire Emblem fan, you’ll be happy to know that it is now being labeled as a “major IP” for Nintendo. The publisher is pleased with how the franchise is being received in Japan as well as in Western territories. As such, you can look forward to more Fire Emblem content later this year and beyond. An application based on the popular RPG series is in the works, and it’s scheduled to launch in the fall for smart devices. You can read what Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima had to say on the matter below:

Fire Emblem is a pioneering role-playing simulation game series, combining the tactical elements of a simulation game with the character customization elements of a role-playing game.

It is also well known by the catchphrase “tough-to-beat simulation.” This high-quality simulation game depicts intense battles in a sword-and-sorcery world inhabited by unique and charming characters, making it well-loved by fans.

Fifteen titles have been released in this series, from Fire Emblem: Ankokuryu to Hikari no Ken (Japanese title) in 1990 to the latest title, Fire Emblem Fates.

This series has many passionate fans, particularly among gamers in their 20s and 30s.

As I mentioned before, the latest title, Fire Emblem Fates, is selling well in America and has found a wide audience outside of Japan as well.

We have also released many spin-off titles and related products, and this has become a major IP for Nintendo, both in name and in substance.

We are currently developing an application for smart devices based on Fire Emblem.

We expect that many consumers will experience Fire Emblem for the first time on their smart device, so this application will offer a more accessible style of gameplay compared to the titles for dedicated video game systems. At the same time, we still aim to provide a fully engaging experience as a role-playing simulation game.

  1. Great! Glad to see my No.1 favorite franchise FINALLY get the respect it’s long deserved.

Now if you care so much, then for the next game, please improve the story telling because seriously, the one in Fates sucks. Thank goodness the gameplay is nearly perfect though.

  2. Wasn’t it already a major IP.
Mario, Donkey Kong, Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, Yoshi, Kirby, Metroid, Star Fox, Wario, Pikmin, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, F-Zero, Earthbound, etc.

    1. Before Awakening, the series was on the verge of being canned due to lack of sales.

Course Nintendo never advertised it outside of Japan all that much so that had a part in it.

      1. In all fairness, Shadow Dragon, the title before Awakening, did terrible. the upgrade system was awful, the graphics were worse. It was a mess and i nearly quite the franchise at that point. Then Awakening looked so good – it was the reason i bought a 3ds at all. Awakening is the reason why Fire Emblem lives on in the states.

I remember how I first found it, my mom’s ex gave me a copy of Scared Stones because it looked “anime-y” and he thought I might like it (plus, i bet it was in a clearance bin or something).

    2. Earthbound isn’t a major IP for them; there are only three games for it (as far as I’m aware at least) and the creator said he’s not making any more after Mother 3.

I understand WHY you added it to the list, though (the fact that Ness is a regular in Smash; Lucas is getting a little more attention; Earthbound Beginnings appeared; a couple of other things that I can’t remember happened).

  3. It’s considered a major IP now? That explains why Nintendo is being stupid with it. Sorry, sorry. I’ve been on a bad roll of insulting Nintendo for their shitty business practices as of late.

    1. Smh really? Fire Emblem has done nothing but rise with sales. Nothing stupid has happened. Bro. Really?

        1. Not really, the game series before Awakening was kinda bland. Awakening added some personality but it did have some bad aspects. Fates is the Jack of all Trades. Don’t knock until you try it. Fates has some pretty enjoyable aspects, enough aspects that it’s good enough to be played again because of different routes and such. The game was successful enough to get DLC wave 2. Nintendo really hit the nail with the FE series this time around.

          1. I can see what you mean by bland, but the gameplay took a very hard hit with Awakening. It was pretty much perfect in Heroes of Light and Shadow, then Awakening erased that progress.

Although, to be fair, FE’s quality is so dependent on map design that you can have both very good and very bad games even using the same formula/mechanics. Nevertheless, Awakening’s “easy mode” mechanics like the pair-ups and grindable maps made it way too easy, the difficulty curve is all over the place.

I have tried Fates, extensively (both Birthright and Conquest). I liked Conquest more, obviously, but I still don’t consider it as fine-tuned as FE12 or even FE9.

            1. Well tbh they couldn’t make it just super hardcore that required you to use your brain really hard because some people are just enjoying this for fun. Plus what about the highest difficulty?

              1. I have nothing against having an easy mode for new player (in fact, I’m all for it), but make it separate from “classic mode”. They kinda did that with Fates, but making them separate games is not the ideal solution. What I’d like to see is a new game, with just one version, an easy mode with the new gameplay for those who started with Awakening and a regular mode (no pair-up, no map) for those seeking the old FE vibe.

About hard mode, I can only speak about Awakening’s harder modes. Hard is good difficulty, it reminded me of FE6’s default (which is considered a hard FE game). Lunatic, I had not much of a problem with, but Lunatic+ is just a design clusterfuck. No reasoning behind enemy placement, VERY overpowered enemies due to their skills and the RNG goes wild in each and every turn. I’d rather see it gone so they can polish other difficulty levels more.

                1. Well to be fair I said it was never perfect but it was a giant step forward, can’t expect everything to be perfect.

                  1. To me, it was a step backwards. Production values were up, and the cutscenes were pretty, but if the gameplay, writing, difficulty curve and difficulty options are are worse than its predecessors, then the game is worse in my eyes. The only things I can see as clear improvements are its great soundtrack and making the series more accessible. And as I said, Fates was a step in the right direction. I’m sure the next one will be even better, assuming they don’t go all-out with the weeaboo pandering.

                    1. Nowhere near a step backward. Some weeaboo content was removed, Didn’t Awakening take itself very seriously? At least Fates had some jokes, meme material and etc to have a fun time with. Look at the 3rd path and the DLC like “Hidden Truths” it’s pretty deep. The only reason why you’re saying it is because you’re taking it way too seriously. Just because they didn’t make the difficulty curve greater doesn’t mean it’s bad. What if people just want to stroll on by this game without forcing to grind for hours. Fates is the best of both worlds. That’s why it was successful fam.

                      1. I said better, not greater. It doesn’t have to be balls-to-the-wall hard, but there has to be SOME curve. Awakening’s difficulty was flat as hell. And as I said, if people want to play a glorified cutscene, they can pick easy mode. No need for the rest of the game (and older fans) to suffer.

Other than that, you’re equating quality with success, which is a terrible idea when speaking about games.

                        1. Wasting your time with that last sentence on him. He thinks success=quality. For example, he thinks the Wii was great quality because of it’s success in sales. Such a black & white way of looking at things. It’s pathetic, really.

                            1. I know that I too should stop talking to him but I like seeing what the little fanboy comes up with next. Oh look! He replied to my comment already! lol

                                1. The fact that Wii was just a unique system that got advertisement which captured the attention of a lot of people. Never said it was the best console. But it sure is the best Nintendo system wise. Wii was filled with good games too so it really wasn’t a “shitty console with shitty games”. He’s just finding another excuse to shit on Nintendo. Playstation and Xbox systems are better? Sure whatever but he can’t start saying the Wii is a mistake when it hit a homerun.

                                  1. Once again with that black & white mentality and only focusing on the sales. I guess you missed the hundreds upon hundreds of shovelware? Or were you so desperate for something to play on Wii that you bought every cheap game you came across & thought each one was the shit? Wait. You aren’t worth my time with long, drawn out comments. Even if I didn’t resort to attacking you personally, you’d still suck Nintendo’s balls, huh? Here’s a Scooby Snack & a picture, instead! Good doggy!

                                    http://blog.fnac.ch/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/WWE_Stone_Cold_Steve_Austin_What-10505301062006.jpg

                                    1. I’m not focusing on just the sales stupid. I’m also looking at the games and the uniqueness factor. Stop fucking calling everyone who has some faith in Nintendo an “dicksucker”. Sucking Nintendo’s balls is saying that their systems are better than Sony and Microsoft’s and the Wii U is the best console ever even though there’s Ps4 right there. Inconsiderate asshole.

                                        1. You’re pissing me off because you’re calling me a ballsucker just because I believe the Wii is the best selling Nintendo console. That’s very pathetic.

                                              1. I gave up on arguing with Peridot Fanboy a long time ago. Now I’m just trolling him with Stone Cold’s oldest meme which is still used by the WWE Audience today. But even doing that is starting to bore me. In fact, I ignored his last two comments using that time to stop picture. Now he’ll try to lure me back at some point by saying he “won” or repeating his last defense for Nintendo with different words. Or he’ll respond to this comment right here with some fanboy logic.

                                              2. King Kalas is just some blind fucker who assumes everybody who supports Nintendo is an hardcore fanboy. He has some pretty shit logic.

                                                  1. Conquest is only better in terms of gameplay/maps and characters (debatable), however it’s much more difficult compare to birthright. While Birthright is only better in terms of story (IMO the third route has a better story) and it easier to play.

                                                  2. Because it follows the old FE formula, basically. To be honest, it’s almost a matter of preference. If IS learned how to take advantage of the pair-up system when designing the maps, I wouldn’t be that hard on the new style. By all means, finish Birthright first before jumping into Conquest, but don’t be surprised when you find it to be a pretty different game.

                                          1. I’m referring to censoring perfectly harmless things & making them look worse. Like the Awakening DLC with Tharja in a bikini. There was nothing wrong with the original version as she was doing what all real life girls & women do when wearing bikini bottoms: adjusting them to cover more of their butt. The censored version looks like Chrom’s cape, making it seem like he’s doing something to her. *waits for whatever bogus defense you have for that*

                                            1. Oh that’s fantastic another censorship whiner. Look. Things have been censored and always will be censored. It’s just how it is. Without censorship 13 year olds would be able to get married. Elise in FE Fates in Japan for example. Plus there has been good changes. Like Selena’s and Laslow’s B Support. It’s much more funny and enjoyable than it was in the Japanese version. So really your argument is as bogus as pointless.

                                              1. Wow. My points always fly right over your little Nintendo fanboy head, don’t they? It’s cute you are so fanatically loyal to your Master Nintendo, though. *pats the little doggy on the head* Do you want a Scooby Snack?

                                                1. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CXnDzNFWAAA70wX.jpg
You’re just trying to change the subject saying it “Went over my head” when I’m exactly addressing your points. There has ALWAYS been censorship. It’s no use complaining I’ve already accepted it. But of course knowing your stupid ass you’re just gonna keep saying “Oh my points went completely over your head” like an arrogant shithead. GET A CLUE. I EXACTLY MENTIONED YOUR FUCKING POINTS.

                                      1. Congrats! Now you will have to wait 3 or more years for a new game with multiple delays now that the series is one of the big boys!

                                        1. Nah homie. I can understand some time it would be for the next game, but it won’t end up like Star Fox’s case XD

                                      2. Ehh, I’ve never been a fan of the series. I wish they’d use the Donkey Kong, F-Zero, Metroid, and Luigi’s mansion IPs more though. Fire Emblem is too japan-influenced for my tastes.

                                          1. Yeah, with all of the animes out there, the series’s art direction seems sort generic. I like my games to have a bit more flare, something like the Metroid or Halo series. Or if we’re going beyond games, I’d include the Star Wars movies.

                                            1. Don’t knock until you try it. I can understand the older FE games even Awakening but Fates is the Jack of all Trades. Don’t think of me as just blindly defending this I genuinely enjoyed Fates. DK? Ehhhhhhhh- I’m pretty sure at this point Nintendo forgot about F-Zero and the only thing they remember anything close to that is Captain Falcon, Metroid’s new title currently to expand upon the universe is “Federation Force” if they’re able to successfully expand upon the Metroid universe we would get much more titles. Look at Kirby, Star Fox and Fire Emblem. You can clearly see that some of the stuff they expanded off is based off Smash 4 and the support. The support is sorta there but not completely. Y’know what I’m saying?

                                        1. Metroid isn’t really cared about all that much in Japan tho. And tbh Metroid is and would be very hard to expand upon. They tried with Other M and failed, they tried to give Samus more personality but she turned into….. That.

                                      6. HAH HAH HAH!!!! In you fuckers faces! Don’t like the fact that an well deserving IP got it’s attention in Smash? Too bad! It’s an major IP now and it’s here to stay. :^)

                                      7. Good, now where the hell is the Fire Emblem anime? Can’t be giving Miyamoto’s babies too much press any longer.

                                      8. Welp, looks like Intelligent Systems (the company subsidiary for Nintendo that’s making the game series) is going to be busy.

Those of you who really liked Advanced Wars should already guess that this announcement means that they put the final nail to the coffin today. :/

                                          1. True, but just in case there were still some people who thought that this game would get revived somehow (because I see lot of people at NintendoLife even now hoping for another game in the series),…

.. this should be enough to show that there’s no hope for it anymore.

                                            1. I don’t know about that. It’s kind of similar to Fire Emblem, after all. A rising tide lifts all boards, as they say, especially when the tide likes and asks for more boats.

What I mean to say with that terrible metaphor/proverb is that since FE is popular now, maybe AW, due to its similarities actually has more of a chance now that during the DS generation.

                                          2. Ugh! You just gave me a good phrase to describe Chibi-Robo Zip Lash. Shame it’s fate depended on a spin off that wasn’t even a true representation of the original Chibi-Robo on GCN. If they try to pull this shit with Federation Force, there will be hell to pay.

                                              1. Let’s hope that is Nintendo’s thinking & not them just trying to change our opinion about shitForce.

                                        1. If Sakurai is now the go to guy for Kid Icarus, we’ll get that game when HE gets ready to give it to us. :/ I’ve said it once & I’ll say it again: he only ever does stuff for himself. But I guess people think he kept Ganondorf a clone of Capt Falcon because fans of that moveset liked it. Wrong. He kept it cuz that’s his favorite character & moveset to use so he kept it that way because HE wanted it. I wish I was just being paranoid but every other decision in Smash says I’m right.

                                          1. Nah you’re just being paranoid. Ganondorf has always been added last into every Smash game. Plus he’s STILL a walking menace. Your bias pokes through a lot of your arguments. Was it kinda unfair to give him a cloned moveset? Yes. Is it a bad thing to keep the moveset but expand upon it to where it’s more like Ganon? Not really.

                                                      1. Says the guy who’s hating over Ganon being manly af. Ganondorf is way too awesome of a character to hide behind an sword. And Smash proves that further.

                                                          1. Yep you’re only replying with a picture because you’re trying to deny the facts. Ganondorf has the triforce of power, he shouldn’t be another Marth clone and hide behind a sword. Trying to give Ganondorf even more would be trying too hard in a game where a monkey is the best character.

                                                            1. http://blog.fnac.ch/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/WWE_Stone_Cold_Steve_Austin_What-10505301062006.jpg

I’m only replying with a picture because there is no point debating with a hardcore fanboy like you. But by all means. Keep thinking your little biased opinions are facts. It’s fun to see how far you go to blow Sakurai’s balls. Anyway, I’m done trolling you. Now go enjoy your false victory because you think you won because I’m finally gonna walk away. G’day.

                                            1. that’s good to hear. too bad awakening left some bad taste in my mouth. I’d rather just play the older games.

                                            2. Fire Emblem Fates Birthright was good, but I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as I did Awakening.

I’m currently playing through Conquest, but I have a feeling that it’ll be more of the same, but harder.

                                            3. I really hope this means they’ll continue making high-quality games in the franchise, and not “we now know people love it, so we’ll turn it into a mobile game and see how much we can squeeze out of the dedicated fans on name alone”. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Pokemon Sun and Moon has a premium currency…

                                            4. Well, that’s fine, but please please PLEASE don’t throw other franchises to the wayside because of it. I don’t want this outshining everything else Nintendo has like Mario and Zelda do (nothing against those series, they’ve just been overdone the past two gens).

                                            5. Too bad it isn’t big enough for Wii U probably…………………………….. And they better prove their statement with a FE NX tittle. Fire Emblem is good on handheld – ten times better on home consoles.
