Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima has revealed during the investors meeting (which has now been translated into English) that the company expects the Nintendo NX “to be a platform that consumers can enjoy for a long time.” Kimishima also doesn’t expect that the platform will be sold to consumers at a loss which falls in line with other consoles.

I’ll see it when I believe it. Actions speak louder than words after all.
Exactly. Besides, I’ve heard enough words from Nintendo this gen.
Time to put up or shut up.
If it’s as long term as the Wii U, then no thanks.
I have a sneaky feeling it will be oldschool upgradable, that it will later physically attach to a supplementary device when game developers demands increase. That device could contain extra ram and could be specifically designed to drag processing power from other NX’s. I don’t think Nintendo would do a wireless external like Sony.
If they do that, they’ll risk splitting up their user base. Why buy NX when I can get NX 2.0? People are already not happy with PS4.5.
Now, I’m expecting this:
1st tweet form a “famous Nintendo insider”: “Had a conversation today with people involved in the NX development”
2nd tweet form a “famous Nintendo insider”: “NX will have upgradable hardware to increase its lifespan”
3rd tweet form a “famous Nintendo insider”: “I’ve been correct several times, I’m correct on this one too”
And some blind followers will insist s(he) is right.
Like that Emily guy, right? >.<
;)
Eh. This doesn’t really tell us anything about the hardware other than it’s affordable. I’m doing armchair economy here, but I’m guessing it’d have to be considerably more powerful than a PS4 (maybe even Neo) to be sold at a loss.
Or it could just be expensive right? Like having people pay a premium for premium hardware. I really cannot speculate on a price point without seeing this thing though. People buy tablets for over 500 and if that is the “new” competition, not just other consoles (or not other consoles at all) which is supported by the portable hybrid rumors, than maybe it will just be very expensive, at the 4-500 range
Well, yeah, but I don’t see Nintendo going for a +400 console after the Wii U. I’m not even considering that price range, I’m expecting it to release something in the 300-400 price range. That’s the current selling price for PS4-tier tech anyway (which is several years old at this point, I might add), and I don’t expect them to go that far above that. I could see a hybrid upping up the cost, but that’s the main reason why I don’t think it’s a hybrid.
Besides that, tablets and phones are a different market than consoles, they’re not made to last as long. Consoles are more comparable to appliances when talking about public perception, really.
True on the appliance route and longer life, and while that is the hopeful goal of the console, I still think that the market shift has anything involved with what the public considers “gaming” as in direct competition on some level. Nintendo, and by in large the whole video game industry, is trying to make a statement that their device is what you should buy for your kids to play games on. And actually as I type, I find myself ready to make an argument as to why this console will be cheaper than what I originally stated… The Wii took off because of a lower price and most parents don’t want to pay that premium for device that they don’t see as any different than what they have (hence why the Wii U shit the bed and why parents with some Kindle Fire or other crappy tablet see their kids happy with that and figure, “That’s good enough”. While I know that many of us are adult gamers and there is a strong contingent in this generation of parents buying for themselves first, which might also lead to a more dedicated home console geared for them, if there is a portable piece to the NX, that might be what is different…
I will leave it at this and then I have to work… If you buy an NX, a stand alone home console, with a more traditional controller and crazy specs for home, with no tablet and necessary, dedicated “gamepad-like” controller (something many people didn’t like being forced on them) then you can have a $300 or so home console that is more powerful than PS4, has 3rd party support and is geared for the more hardcore, or adult gaming community. Then you can have a separate, but not necessary tablet type controller that can be bought separately (which the gamepad could not be) and that will also be the HD portable that creates the hybrid and this could be your $199-250 portable device. All in all you have a 500-600 console, but it could be one or the other (if you don’t need the home console to have the portable). I mean, I am not saying this is right by any rationale, just a possibility based on all the rumors.
To conclude, I concede that you could very easily be right, in that it could be cheaper. I just wonder what “not selling at a loss” actually means. Cheaper hardware, low price, or more expensive hardware and keeping the price high to compensate. The latter makes it hard to move millions of consoles unless this thing is from another world and everyone (besides me) NEEDS THIS DAMN THING IN MY HOUSE NOW or however it is when we first see it
Yeah, not much is clear at the moment. I think the NX will have some sort of portable functionality, but I’m expecting it to be a much minor thing than what people are making it out to be. Nevertheless, that’s just my take on the concept, I have as much of an argument as anyone else. How that will reflect on the price is anyone’s guess.
Good group of us with some intelligent thoughts on a system we haven’t seen. Kind of interesting actually
E3s skipped aside, the NX has been a pretty wild ride so far. People have talked about hardware design, potential software lineup, the current state of Nintendo, the competitors’ plans, the current direction of the market, cloud processing, hybrid consoles, cartridges making a comback…
It’s an all-encompassing conversation, and while I see the dangers of not even hinting at what it is, there’s no denying that as a publicity stunt is nothing short of spectacular.
True… fingers crossed for cartridges. haha
You have a point. I noticed how Kimishima never used the word ” affordable ” in reference to the NX and you would think at a investors meeting that would be the main feature of the NX that he would try to point out to the investors. I could be wrong but I’m starting to think that the NX will be the world’s first upgradable home console or hybrid platform. It may be significantly pricey ($450-$500) but it will be worth it in the long run because of it’s ability to upgrade it’s processing power via the cloud and through the portable device version (if it is one as rumors are suggesting). If what I said is true it will certainly be a risky gutsy move on Nintendo’s part but if Nintendo has that ” Mario 64 ” type of game that can break new ground and bring in a new gaming audience then it would definitely be a risk worth taking
If what you say is what happens, the upgradeable console I think a lot of have been craving for almost 20 years, especially when we use to look at the ports on the gamecube and Wii thinking, (oh, there is going to be an attachment of somekind, more storage, more ram, more SOMETHING) then a high price point would be very worth it. And cloud processing enhancement, that is something I had not really considered. As long as the playing experience is smooth and engaging and not riddled with some sort of lag or technical difficulties, then innovation will be very welcome
So it would be like blending the “PC master race” with a home console in a Nintendo like solution. lol
Seriously though, I could actually see this happening as it seems like a trend lately, with Windows 10 for example being the final Windows iteration as it will only receive updates going forward. Same with Street Fighter 5, instead of having super, arcade edition, ultra, etc it will also only be getting updates. It kind of feels like the DLC concept is evolving towards hardware…
i think they are trying to say that the third party support might be a little more then that if we find out but they should expand there profits on getting more third party series in the console. yeah i think the NX will get a little more of third party series because one of the developers, might be planning something to stay in business so they won’t risk anything in there company. i swear if the 9thj generation hardware won’t get a third party support then the NX will fail completely once it launch in there markets. besides if the third party is not supported on the NX then i’m not gonna get it at all. i hope sonic make it in the NX.
In time, guys: remember is living.

I hope that it Will Be stronger als the ps4k…. If not, than sorry but there Will Be no games within a year.
Devs are not going to develop games exclusively for the PS4N. That would be terrible business.
… At least we hope so.
Dear God, I hope. The console market is in a pretty bad shape already, it doesn’t need Sony and other studios making retarded decision on top of it.
Yeah. Whatever you say.
Sounds like they’re tooting their own horn…
It’s all good about having a strong 1st party line up but if like the Wii U it has to rely on 1st party then it will fail again, we always look to the X1/PS4 for the “hardcore” titles, the NX can not be without them with games such as BF4 or BF5 now, GTA V, whatever the new COD is etc. Without these games that should get a equal share of the lime light along side 1st party then we’ll suffer the fate of the Wii U again.
That was the Wii U’s downfall (aside from it being underpowered to 360/PS3 standards from the start), also SONY made a real hard push for indie devs to be comfortable on PS4 this time around and Nintendo should do the same to sustain itself with casual sales.

“… can enjoy for a long time.” – Kimishima
Modular feature is the closest thing that could fit on that description.
Will the NX be modular?
He’s only going to answer the question that was asked? Isn’t that normal? To go off on tangents is to avoid the question, leaving people to assume the worst.
LOL, good point!
“long term” and “not sold at a loss” means 1 of 2 things, either it’ll be really weak or expensive
They expected the Wii U to do well too, and we all know that never happened.

I would like something that would play monster hunter in HD (4K even?) with the option of playing it on the go. And I only want to buy one game.
In my mind, they contradict each ohter. Unless they’re thinking horizontally, I don’t see how an underpowered console is going to last long.
If that’s true, Nintendo, you can’t fuck up on it. It better have a disc drive for physical games.
If it doesn’t have a disk drive for physical games, it will be dead before it releases.
