Pachter: Doubtful Nintendo NX Will See Much Third-Party Western Support

Famed industry analyst, the one and only Michael Pachter, has discussed the Nintendo NX in his recent Pachter Factor episode on Siftd. Pachter, who is known for his criticism of Nintendo, is convinced that the Nintendo NX won’t get much third-party support outside of Japanese developers, but he does say this could change if the system proves to be a success with consumers. The Nintendo NX launches globally in March 2017.

“When last I looked, which was in the last three months, Nintendo has something like $10 billion in cash. I think that the worst case if the NX is a bust, they will lose half a billion,”

“Every time I have ever criticised that company and its management, including its late president, it wasn’t because they were running the company into the ground and about to go bankrupt. It was because I didn’t think they were generating enough profit on the phenomenal assets that they have. I’m not critical of these guys in the way that you should be worried.”

“As long as they keep producing great content – and they have never wavered – they’ll be fine. I just don’t think they are going to maximise their profits without having a good hardware strategy and a good software strategy.

“And, I frankly think that handhelds are challenged because mobile has become the way that most people play games, and console is challenged because they have been underpowered the last couple of generations and they are trying to be cute with these different kind of hybrid devices. Like, a GamePad instead of a controller, and nobody really liked it so the Wii U didn’t work. Their failure in hardware has cost them third-party support, because third-parties can’t afford to make a game for a 10 million install base Wii U that could be discontinued at any time.

“[With] the NX, I think you are going to see very low third-party support outside of Japan unless the thing is a hit. And so, I mean my criticism of them is just that they have squandered a big lead that they had in hardware and gone from first-to-worst, quickly, on the console side.”

  1. So he is making another guess and doesn’t even know what NX is and what it does. Thay’s stupid. It could actually be quite the opposite. Then what would be his cowardly excuse?

  2. Eh, there’s no 3rd-party western developer I care much for anyway.

I just want Nintendo to get 3rd parties like Atlus, Square Enix, Namco, and others on board.

    1. i think they are trying to say that the third party support might be a little more then that if we find out but they should expand there profits on getting more third party series in the console. yeah i think the NX will get a little more of third party series because one of the developers, might be planning something to stay in business so they won’t risk anything in there company. i swear if the 9thj generation hardware won’t get a third party support then the NX will fail completely once it launch in there markets. besides if the third party is not supported on the NX then i’m not gonna get it at all. i hope sonic make it in the NX.

  3. I know it’s funny to make Jokes about Pachter, but I’m sure he knows who does and who does not have NX devkits, and what are and how many are the games in the pipeline of Western thirdies. So… He may have a point.

      1. Agree on getting paid to randomly guess the future. But I do believe he has his sources. He’s been around for a while already, so I’m pretty confident he has connections. In fact, he stated it several times in the past.

            1. How does it feels that your manchild bitch pokemonnerd2000 got destroyed at smogon?
              Moron, lol!

                1. First of all, this b*tch was challenging somebody known as the lulzy artist, but that person was busy or something, then he challenged that pokedestroyer, it’s hilarious when pokemonnerd uses celebi and mega charizard x because he thought he would win the battle (and failed misearably), then he tried to damage control saying that he’s not a competitive player, can you see the irony? a “non competitive” player challenging people on youtube using a platform for competitive pokemon players.
Oh and i remember that sasori used to call the nintendo fans on this website as “manchilds” even when the pokemonnerd2000 (one of his followers) is 23 years old plays with plushies on youtube, anyway here’s the video and i’m not responsible for any damage to your circuits.

                    1. Btw, i hope you realize that we know the identity of some of the people here, not only the identity of jonathan hickson (a.k.a hollowgrapej) and we are not joking, we know who is the valveadmiralglados, heyit’sguy, lamatsucube, kallum, “shuhei yoshida” (now “the orange”) among others you can ask hollowgrapej if it’s true or not the info that i gave to you, obviously he is going to lie, but the most important think is that it’s true, we are not going to dox anybody…doxing is for losers, we might tease other like we do with that hollowgrapeloser.
Oh, i’m sure that you know this:

Valveadmiralglados= estoczero, “gabe newell”= Mike Lendukway

One last thing, last month i just “broke the ice”
Yeah, one of us work to NSD and we hope you know what this means, we’ll only say that the idiot used double meanings in his jokes that some of the coworkers didn’t understand, but i did, so…

                        1. If i were a stalker i’d be doxing you, do yourself a favor aand stop being a moron, i am not responsible for your stupidity johnny.

            2. Hopefully nintendo wont do something stupid to hurt its third party support like its been doing since N64 (Cartridges, 1.4GB Mini DVDs, underpowered hardware that doesnt come with a proper controller, underpowered hardware again). Then again if the game is gonna come to PC i’m not getting it for a console anyways unless the NX proves to be more powerful than my 700$ (Canadian) computer.

                1. @sonicjms1 wasn’t saying the n64 was underpowered. he was stating, in order, the problems with the consoles since the n64.
                  N64 – cartridge
                  GCN – 1.4GB Mini DVDs
Wii – Underpowered Hardware and no proper controller
Wii U – Underpowered hardware again

            3. Patcher is NOT a reliable analyst (or guesser for investors), fame aside. He’s often derided on industry sites for his foggy forecasting and I can’t for the life of me find any of his predictions that were 100% correct. Take what he says with a HUGE grain of salt, is all I’m saying.

            4. SICKR, FOR THE LAST TIME:

THIS PACHTER DUDE ONLY SAYS THIS CRAP BECAUSE CONTROVERSY = RECOGNITION, AND RECOGNITION = $$$$

STOP posting this crap! I feel the only reason you post it is because it’s controversial, which, in your case, would also earn you $$$ from ad revenue because people are like “OMG LOOK AT WHAT THIS IDIOT SAID, READ THIS ARTICLE”

STOOOOOOP. He deserves none of your attention, and these posts only serve to get attention. It benefits no one but yourself and Pachter. Clickbait. Not everyone with a computer is an “analyst”! That, along with fabricating and “leaking” information is what people do when they can’t get jobs.

MyRumourNews. MyPactherNews. MyLiamRoberstonNews. My EmilyWhatsHerFaceNews. If I see this trash in my feed one more time, I’ll jump ship and find another site. Quality ALWAYS needs to be your #1 priority, not this trash.

            5. Mirror mirror on the wall who’s the biggest retard of them all. He is. “Nobody liked the gamepad” Phtwo! It was the name, marketing and lack of horsepower and EVEYBODY and their dog knows that.

              1. A lot of what you said is true, but the part about the gamepad… A lot of people didn’t like it. Just like the Wii Mote it had fans and detractors. Many people just want a regular controller. People who saw the gamepad reveal probably equated the Wii U to just a continuation of the Wii. And many gamers despised the Wii, so therefore they tuned out the Wii U.

                1. What people fail to realize was that there Was an alternative. There had ALWAYS been that alternative (even one or two made by third-parties) And don’t give me any of that “I gotta pay another fifty bucks fo-” HEY! It’s either put up or shut up & be happy with the Gamepad.

                  1. Great mentality. Let’s see. Wii U bombed. Yep. Great mentality there. Gamepad was the only option in some games. Like Wonderful 101 and Star Fox Zero (co-op doesn’t count). Face it. The nontraditional controllers helped in driving away a large portion of gamers. These controllers should be the secondary option, not the first option or only option. Aside from games like Wii Sports of course. Put up or shut up about the gamepad ended up a disaster for Nintendo.

                    1. Well no shit the Wii U bombed, lol! I’ve long accepted that my 300$ Zelda Edition Wii U purchase was probably a big-time waste. What I’m tired of people forgetting is that there WERE controller options out there, whether official from Nintendo or third-party like Hori or PDP. Yes, they SHOULD be first priority but guess what? Nintendo thought outside the box for once when no one else did. ‘Hey, it worked for Wii. Why not continue with a gimmick on Wii U?’ Terrible, terrible name, by the way. Thought that since the day a customer came up to me asking the difference between the two.

And I wouldn’t say the “nontraditional controllers” drove away gamers; just the Gamepad & lack of third-party [software] support. Wii was a huge success…as I heard, haha.

                      1. The Wii was a huge success financially. But after a while, many gamers got tired of the Wiimote. But all the casuals it attracted brought in major sales. And they are not loyal at all. That, combined with the gamers that were turned off already off by the Wiimote and shovelware, were major factors for the Wii U failing. The gamepad was a contributing factor for multiple reasons. It showed gamers that motion control kind of gameplay would be a priority again, and it made it harder for third party companies to develop for the Wii U. Yes there were other options. But it’s on Nintendo to attract gamers not the other way around. Forcing gamers to buy traditional controllers caused many to not buy at all. You can’t blame gamers who didn’t want to buy additional controllers. That’s totally on Nintendo. They need to know their market. They haven’t since the Wii. They think their market is casuals. They forgot that their market is gamers.

                  1. That doesn’t help Nintendo though. People left Nintendo in droves. The Wii was a fad, interesting at first, but a lot of people got over it real quick and went back to traditional controllers. Nintendo doubled down on their funky brand of controllers, and many gamers wanted no part of it. If the nontraditional controllers were a secondary option and not the focus of the console, they would gain back a lot of people. Besides the gamers, there is also the third party developers who were turned off that they had to try to incorporate the gamepad into their games. Nintendo themselves barely found any use for the thing.

            6. So his ‘analysis’ is basically: if it sucks, it won’t get support but if it’s great it will. Wow. It’s like he’s a super mutant gypsy fortune reader!

            7. i think they are trying to say that the third party support might be a little more then that if we find out but they should expand there profits on getting more third party series in the console. yeah i think the NX will get a little more of third party series because one of the developers, might be planning something to stay in business so they won’t risk anything in there company. i swear if the 9thj generation hardware won’t get a third party support then the NX will fail completely once it launch in there markets. besides if the third party is not supported on the NX then i’m not gonna get it at all. i hope sonic make it in the NX.

              1. Also, the ign peeps are raving over the “NX not selling at a loss” news. Love reading the comments, people make some good points, people say some random ass karp. It’s great fun.

Honestly though, I can’t wait for a good clear specs reveal and then see how people blow up, it’s gonna be magical. MAGICAL!

            8. There is nothing in this quote that I disagree with. I never really see any well thought out arguments against this guy. Every comment against him I see is “Pachter again?! This guy iz dumb. hur hur hurrrr”

Remember that article Sickr posted a while ago about Pachter saying the NX will come out in 2017? All the comments in that article said the same thing. “This man is so stupid!” “He doesn’t know what he’s talking about!” “Stop posting about this guy!”

And look what happened. NX is coming out in 2017. Don’t hate this guy because he may tell you what you don’t wanna hear. Hate the source…aka Nintendo’s management. Personally, I think he does his job pretty well.

-||It takes what others said before him and turns it into its so called “analyzed” theories, that Xbot was created only to spread corruption because of its charlatans||-

            9. You all need to stop treating this guy’s word as gospel. Early indications seem to be that the NX will at least have significantly improved 3rd party support compared to the Wii U. His analysis is completely off the cuff and not rooted in any sort of thorough research or deep thought. Please stop writing articles about every little thing that Pachter says about Nintendo. It’s hardly relevant.

            10. This is one of the few times i ever agree with this guy, only because he’s stating the obvious. Of course if it does well 3rd parties will jump on board, and jump off if it does bad. That’s how its always been and always will be (unfortunately.) Hey, can i be a weather analysis and get paid to say that the sky will probably be blue tomorrow, or that the sun should rise? Because that’s what this guy does with video games. (Either that or just spells doom and gloom for Nintendo for the stupidest reasons.)

-||Every time I have ever criticised that creature and its arguments, including its late reasoning, it wasn’t because it was running its intelligence into the ground and about to go crazy. It was because I didn’t think it was generating enough neurons in the phenomenal brain that it has. I’m not critical of this creature in the way that you should be happy||-

            12. If if’s and but’s were candy and nuts, we’d all have a merry Christmas.
Any one can make “if” predictions.

If we had not staked Jesus, he and Dracula would still be having orgies backstage’s of death metal concerts.

            13. If anyone actually reads this…as much as I hate to admit it since he is a huge fool, He’s actually a bit right but not 100%. He does have a point, once the wii u started to fall thanks to the drought and the poor ass excuses the so called great third parties, they did abandon the wii u because of poor marketing and sales. If the NX does well which I bet that’s why nintendo is still keeping it under wraps for now is to get those third parties to develop for them as it gets ready. I’m starting to understand now.

              1. You only want the NX to get third party support just to prove Patcher wrong? lol Do you even understand what you just said? You should want the NX to succeed so Nintendo doesn’t go out of the console race permanently, not because of what Patcher’s opinion is.

            17. What would any of us do if we didn’t have Sherlock Holmes here to tell us these things, guys? Oh that’s right! We’d figure them out ourselves because what he says is mostly so god damn obvious!

            18. Nintendo needs Bethesda, rockstar, Activision and EA if the NX has a chance to succeed against ps4.5 and xbox one point five. It will be a very hard road without them.
